My dad's your age, my grandad was in ww2 for the whole duration, their generation venerated those old boys because good or bad, right or wrong they did lead them as best they could in a war that involved millions of people for half a generation and finally won with everyone knowing someone lost in the conflict, you boomers & us X-generation never knew real hardship like they did, my grandad was my hero, he won the legione of honour award from the French people for his services to the French at pegasus bridge against a crack ss battalion and a box full of various other medals he never looked at or talked about, we kids played with them in the 70's as they were under granny's sink lol, great generation of people, real pleased to have known these folk

Churchill proposed the Gallipoli campaign as a means, by the use of sea power, of knocking the Ottoman Empire out of the war, thus weakening the Central Powers, and perhaps avoiding, or at least minimising, the unfolding carnage on the Western Front. He did not plan it, a number of Army and Navy senior officers did, and nor did he authorise it. The Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith, did. Do you think that Lincoln personally planned the campaigns and battles of the American Civil War, or FDR personally planned D-Day or the Hurtgen Forest?

I have to admit that when he says "we shall go on to the end" it brings a tear to my eye. Because what he is basically saying is that he knows it's going to be hell on earth, but it had to be done to stand on principle. It’s an epic line, simultaneously recognising our long and noble and grand history while acknowledging that, with dignity, we were reaching the end of our hegemony and that it’s was time to pass the torch of the defender of civilisation to a stronger, more numerous nation.
It was an appeal to the United States, certainly, but we shouldn't forget that it also was speaking of Canada, Australia, and even India. Churchill's own notes on that make it clear. He viewed all of them as the children of Britain, a new world created by the old. For India the comparison might be a little odd, but remember that nearly 3.35 million Indians volunteered to fight in WW2, receiving a vast horde of honors in the process. A step-child perhaps, but at the time a faithful one. And the United States plays the role of first-born, having rebelled and left a controlling parent, but in time realizing how little difference remains. Though for the United States it should have been quite simple, France was our step-mother, after all, and it was equally imperiled.

British history contains elements that are shameful and we have to accept that. However, Germany had Nazism and the United States had the genocide of the Native American. So many countries have periods of history for which they cannot be proud. All any of us can do is learn from the mistakes of the past and work to ensure they are not repeated in the future.

I'm American through and through but this man has always inspired me. I listen to this speech every so often to remind myself to never give up and always keep fighting. What a great man. My father, Don Green, was at Dunkirk. He said that they kept back in the sand dunes for cover. He said that normally the English Channel is either as calm with clear skies or rough weather with dark skies. This time my father said that the sky was dark with thick clouds and the sea was as calm as a mill pond. He said that because the clouds were so thick Jerry couldn't easily see them. He saw a couple of Jerry aircraft breaking through the cloud, but two or three of our aircraft quickly appeared and chased after them, and saw them off. Then the last spitfire of the group tilted its wings to say goodbye, as it left for England. Soon, a very large flotilla of assorted small and large boats came from all around England and Wales to Dunkirk to aid their escape.

Yeah my grandad was there too, I'd love to have gotten a chance to ask him about it but he died when I was a kid, straight after Dunkirk he joined the RAF and spent the later part of the war as a bomb aimer on Lancaster bombers. I'm very proud of my grandad, wish I got to know him better though.

His speeches have helped me through some dark times as well. And then I learned that he also suffered with debilitating depression, and what we today know as ptsd, caused by the failed amphibious landings at gallipoli, where my great great uncle died. After learning this, his speeches suddenly became so much more personal for me. Like Winston, I am half British, like him I served in the British army, albeit for a short time. And like him I have suffered due to the "black dog of depression". Stay strong brother. Never surrender, and do what makes you happy. Also, don't be concerned about what other people think. There's a motto in the British army, known as the order of the garter. Honi soi qui mal y pense. It means "death to those who the evil upon it".

It's amazing that we can sit here over 75yrs later and listen to this. Just a few years later my Grandfather went ashore at Omaha. I remember only a few stories of his walk across France and Europe as he didn't talk about it much. History is that close to our pampered children protesting over something or other as to how hard their lives are when a generation, right now, are the last to hear what WW2 was like from people that fought in it.
I as a Canadian have so admired him. The way he spoke of defending their island. Never surrendering brings chills no matter how many times I have heard this.🇨🇦🇬🇧

@Joe Menguy Churchill fought in India, the Boer War and the Sudan campaign as a young man. After Gallipoli and disgrace, he served in the trenches as CO of a battalion of the Royal Highland Fusiliers. Could you imagine a modern politician doing any such thing?
@Joe Menguy The Beveridge Report, which led to the foundation of the NHS, was commissioned after Churchill became PM of a Conservative-led Coalition government and itwas published in 1942. Beveridge was a Liberal and later a Liberal MP. Churchill did not, apparently, approve of the NHS as eventually proposed - neither did Beveridge, who did not want so much central control - but he had conceded the need for massive social change before the 1945 Labour landslide.

It was a good idea - but the Allies did not have the experience, equipment or sufficient intelligence on the region to carry it off. Lessons learned there, however, were later used by the Allies in the Normandy landings in the west, particularly the insistence on the need for the innovative Mulberry harbours, and informed US Navy and Marine Corps doctrine in the East. The Dardanelles campaign was certainly part of the curriculum at Dartmouth a few years back. Probably still is.

I too watched that brilliant film and have now watched the film Churchill which is about D Day, again an excellent film which again shows so many others against him, but he stood his ground.

Unfortunately many people today think to judge a man born in 1874 by modern standards, they don't understand how different things were even at the time that this speech was made and if you listen carefully you might hear his lisp caused by poorly fitting dentures which made it uncomfortable to eat and sometimes even speak, perhaps part of the reason he drank heavily and he was possibly suffering with Arthritis, although he used to keep fit by Marching up and down the great hall at Checkers, the PM'S official residence to Military Band music, he of course was an Army Officer as a young man and again during WW1 and as a Veteran I remember how hard it is to March through a Town or City to a Military Band, the Echo is very off putting to say the least. Also there's been a problem with Russian "Bots" or Trolls spreading Disinformation throughout social media trying to divide the US and the UK and Europe, Puin's Propaganda machine has been working out of St Petersburg in a very effective way, Brexit was caused by them and they've been trying to get both California and Texas to leave the Union without success, because we know that they are there now.

Like Washington, Lincoln, FDR, and others, Winston Churchill was the right leader at just the right time. Not sure he would have become as renowned in any other era, but he sure was an exraordinary choice for mankind's darkest hour.
As a child I remember hearing of Churchill's defeats, election defeats, after the war. And even as a child I thought, "Well, that's the democracy he saved." A tribute to him. Yeah, I'm old.
FDR was certainly not the "right leader" for WW2. Though a great speaker, the man was a serious racist who allowed and oversaw the construction of internment camps for the Japanese on the West Coast (in partnership with Canada) after the attack on Pearl Harbor. His economic plans were also, to say the least, pretty...bad.

Also more recent studies show that the new deal may have actually extended the Great Depression, and even then we all know that wwii was the thing that saved the us economy. @@romanwagner8709 Bring information about the New Deal's effect. Each state implemented it differently and typically conservative states tended to reduce it as much as possible. The data shows that progressive states recovered faster as they embraced the New Deal. Proper analysis of the whole portrait is important. Also, no one can say that FDR, or any political man of that time, was perfect. They had their flaws, they were also men of their time, with some of the limitations. To judge them by today's standards is pointless. There are things he did in times of war which are very questionable and blamable, and they should be told. However, it shouldn't alone destroy all the good things he did for the world and his country. In many respects, FDR served his countrymen in a way that few politicians did, and did so with great success for America. I agree with @Weary Guardsman. If all politicians were half as committed to their coutrymen as FDR, this world would be much, much better.
The greatest leader this country has ever seen. Every time I listen to one of Sir Winston Churchill's speeches it lifts my heart and makes me proud to be British. I strongly believe that if it wasn't for this great man we would of lost the war. We could do with a leader like him TODAY.

@@roderick2105 Britain defended liberty and prevented the Nazis from taking the rest of Europe. Without them America could not have staged D-day, or pulled it off. Without the British fighting with all their might, the Red Airforce would not have defeated the Luftwaffe and would not have won against Germany. Without Britain, North Africa would stay under the control of Italy and Germany, and the Axis never would have had the extremely hindering fuel problem they had late war. Without the British navy, the Kreigsmarine would have posed a great enough threat to stop any attempted landings into Europe by America, as the American navy was tied up in the Pacific. Without Britain fighting to the last man, Europe would be ruled by the fascists. Defending freedom was more important to the British people than keeping their Empire, keeping their resources and even keeping their great men.
The rescue of some 330,000 men from Dunkirk in 1940 was a feat of the utmost bravery, and as Sir Winston mentioned, totally unexpected! His famous speech a few days later will never be forgotten either! The greatest Englishman ever, speaking from his heart.

I am almost 68 years old. I was born after the war (1953). I knew of this speech and heard parts of it in school. It wasn’t till recently I was able to watch the film adaptation of the speech to Parliament. And when Mr. Churchill got to the line about “the New World with all its power and might stepping forward to rescue the old,” I swelled with pride; not just as an American, but for my family! My parents didn’t marry till after the war. They lived in Southeastern Kentucky - Appalachia. My father, even though he was blind in one eye and listed as non-combat, volunteered as a truck driver (landing on Omaha Beach on D Day pus 3) and was also invited lived in the battle of the Bulge. Although he was non-combat, he had a Thompson sub machine gun in a holster on the door of his Duce and a Half truck. And he has a 9 mil. pistol. My grandparents and my mother and her sister went up to Detroit to work in the munitions factories. They made bomb fuses. My family pitched in and helped save the Old World!

Hitler soon after declared war against us on December 11, 1941. @@scottb4579 In theory Japan was not an Axis power, nor did the Tripartite Pact have to be honored in theory-Hitler did not in fact have to declare war. He however did. Had he not it was very likely we would eventually get involved in Germany but more men would have died for the sake of the war. Thank God we came when we did. God bless Great Britain indeed-everyone glorifies American might and how it “won the war” but there’s no doubt the war was won by the steady nerve of Britain under fire and the British will to stay in the fight even at personal cost. Churchill was also fighting his own political battles since Nazi Germany offered an armistice, and some in parliment wanted to agree with it since the costs of maintaining the war was so great. This is partly the reason hitler went on to invade Russia seeing that he would eventually gain a ceasefire between England and could focus on his eastern campaign. Pearl Harbor changed everything, it meant that the US was going to join, reinforcement of troops gave Churchill the political leverage to silence those that would sign an armistice with Germany.

People forget how bad the situation was in Europe through 1939-1940. Poland was attacked by the two most powerful countries in the world, and destroyed in no time. The third strongest power on the mainland (France) fell faster than Poland, and the fourth most powerful power (Italy) helped Germany do it. Britain was alone, they lost all their equipment at Dunkirk (almost lost the entire army!), And they had a weak air force compared the the Germans. They knew that dark times were ahead, but they simply said "no". They knew that the Germans couldn't land because of the powerful Royal Navy, and that was enough to stick with it.

So, they would use a BBC broadcaster, who sounded somewhat similar to Churchill, I think (could be wrong) to do the speeches, Winston had done in the House of Commons. Non native English speakers really miss something, but I’m not sure what it is, my guess is the emotional timbre....the ancient connotations at deep strata of the words and phrases mixed with tone and context. The same with all languages, I’m sure. I think having fluent English as a second language cannot account for the depth of the unconscious affect of this speech. This was not recorded in the House of Commons. That was not allowed in those days. Churchill agreed to record some of his early war speeches later in the war. From memory, this one was recorded in 1943. And thank God he did. Hearing him speak the words is special, an actor cannot replicate that voice or raw emotion.

I have to admit that when he says "we shall go on to the end" it brings a tear to my eye. Because what he is basically saying is that he knows it's going to be hell on earth, but it had to be done to stand on principle. Only a speech. The war was an own goal and the source of the current catastrophic minimisation of British people. Grooming gangs, knifings, Manchester Arena. Churchill caused these by his war mongering. Left a mess in Ireland and the destabilization he caused in the Middle East causes suffering to this day.
It was a long, arduous speech until the last two minutes. He described how Great Britain got to this point and simply said, we shall keep fighting. Until we deliver victory or until someone helps rescue us. The fight will never end, one way or another!

It’s odd that one of the most patriotic feelings I ever got as an American was hearing a British Prime Minister say, “until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and deliveration of the Old.”
It’s an epic line, simultaneously recognising our long and noble and grand history while acknowledging that, with dignity, we were reaching the end of our hegemony and that it’s was time to pass the torch of the defender of civilisation to a stronger, more numerous nation.
It was an appeal to the United States, certainly, but we shouldn't forget that it also was speaking of Canada, Australia, and even India. Churchill's own notes on that make it clear. He viewed all of them as the children of Britain, a new world created by the old. For India the comparison might be a little odd, but remember that nearly 3.35 million Indians volunteered to fight in WW2, receiving a vast horde of honors in the process. A step-child perhaps, but at the time a faithful one. And the United States plays the role of first-born, having rebelled and left a controlling parent, but in time realizing how little difference remains.
Though for the United States it should have been quite simple, France was our step-mother, after all, and it was equally imperiled.

I admire Sir Winston Churchill. I always read his speech when feel weak. I gain strength from him.He is a great man.
My father, Don Green, was at Dunkirk. He said that they kept back in the sand dunes for cover. He said that normally the English Channel is either as calm with clear skies or rough weather with dark skies. This time my father said that the sky was dark with thick clouds and the sea was as calm as a mill pond. He said that because the clouds were so thick Jerry couldn't easily see them. He saw a couple of Jerry aircraft breaking through the cloud, but two or three of our aircraft quickly appeared and chased after them, and saw them off. Then the last spitfire of the group tilted its wings to say goodbye, as it left for England. Soon, a very large flotilla of assorted small and large boats came from all around England and Wales to Dunkirk to aid their escape.

Yeah my grandad was there too, I'd love to have gotten a chance to ask him about it but he died when I was a kid, straight after Dunkirk he joined the RAF and spent the later part of the war as a bomb aimer on Lancaster bombers. I'm very proud of my grandad, wish I got to know him better though.
Cassette tapes of his speeches got me through my darkest hour and saved my life. I went to his grave in Bladon churchyard to thank him for it.
Unbelievable that his strength and courage which saved the free world in those times is still saving lives today.

His speeches have helped me through some dark times as well. And then I learned that he also suffered with debilitating depression, and what we today know as ptsd, caused by the failed amphibious landings at gallipoli, where my great great uncle died. After learning this, his speeches suddenly became so much more personal for me. Like Winston, I am half British, like him I served in the British army, albeit for a short time. And like him I have suffered due to the "black dog of depression".
Stay strong brother. Never surrender, and do what makes you happy. Also, don't be concerned about what other people think. There's a motto in the British army, known as the order of the garter. Honi soi qui mal y pense. It means "death to those who the evil upon it".

It's amazing that we can sit here over 75yrs later and listen to this. Just a few years later my Grandfather went ashore at Omaha. I remember only a few stories of his walk across France and Europe as he didn't talk about it much. History is that close to our pampered children protesting over something or other as to how hard their lives are when a generation, right now, are the last to hear what WW2 was like from people that fought in it.
I as a Canadian have so admired him. The way he spoke of defending their island. Never surrendering brings chills no matter how many times I have heard this.🇨🇦🇬🇧

@Joe Menguy Churchill fought in India, the Boer War and the Sudan campaign as a young man. After Gallipoli and disgrace, he served in the trenches as CO of a battalion of the Royal Highland Fusiliers. Could you imagine a modern politician doing any such thing?

Unfortunately many people today think to judge a man born in 1874 by modern standards, they don't understand how different things were even at the time that this speech was made and if you listen carefully you might hear his lisp caused by poorly fitting dentures which made it uncomfortable to eat and sometimes even speak, perhaps part of the reason he drank heavily and he was possibly suffering with Arthritis, although he used to keep fit by Marching up and down the great hall at Checkers, the PM'S official residence to Military Band music, he of course was an Army Officer as a young man and again during WW1 and as a Veteran I remember how hard it is to March through a Town or City to a Military Band, the Echo is very off putting to say the least. Also there's been a problem with Russian "Bots" or Trolls spreading Disinformation throughout social media trying to divide the US and the UK and Europe, Puin's Propaganda machine has been working out of St Petersburg in a very effective way, Brexit was caused by them and they've been trying to get both California and Texas to leave the Union without success, because we know that they are there now.

FDR was certainly not the "right leader" for WW2. Though a great speaker, the man was a serious racist who allowed and oversaw the construction of internment camps for the Japanese on the West Coast (in partnership with Canada) after the attack on Pearl Harbor. His economic plans were also, to say the least, pretty...bad.

Also more recent studies show that the new deal may have actually extended the Great Depression, and even then we all know that wwii was the thing that saved the us economy. The data shows that progressive states recovered faster as they embraced the New Deal. Proper analysis of the whole portrait is important.
Also, no one can say that FDR, or any political man of that time, was perfect. They had their flaws, they were also men of their time, with some of the limitations. To judge them by today's standards is pointless. There are things he did in times of war which are very questionable and blamable, and they should be told. However, it shouldn't alone destroy all the good things he did for the world and his country.
In many respects, FDR served his countrymen in a way that few politicians did, and did so with great success for America. I agree with @Weary Guardsman.
If all politicians were half as committed to their coutrymen as FDR, this world would be much, much better.

@@roderick2105 Britain defended liberty and prevented the Nazis from taking the rest of Europe. Without them America could not have staged D-day, or pulled it off. Without the British fighting with all their might, the Red Airforce would not have defeated the Luftwaffe and would not have won against Germany. Without Britain, North Africa would stay under the control of Italy and Germany, and the Axis never would have had the extremely hindering fuel problem they had late war. Without the British navy, the Kreigsmarine would have posed a great enough threat to stop any attempted landings into Europe by America, as the American navy was tied up in the Pacific. Without Britain fighting to the last man, Europe would be ruled by the fascists. Defending freedom was more important to the British people than keeping their Empire, keeping their resources and even keeping their great men.

I am almost 68 years old. I was born after the war (1953). I knew of this speech and heard parts of it in school. It wasn’t till recently I was able to watch the film adaptation of the speech to Parliament. And when Mr. Churchill got to the line about “the New World with all its power and might stepping forward to rescue the old,” I swelled with pride; not just as an American, but for my family! My parents didn’t marry till after the war. They lived in Southeastern Kentucky - Appalachia. My father, even though he was blind in one eye and listed as non-combat, volunteered as a truck driver (landing on Omaha Beach on D Day pus 3) and was also invited lived in the battle of the Bulge. Although he was non-combat, he had a Thompson sub machine gun in a holster on the door of his Duce and a Half truck. And he has a 9 mil. pistol. My grandparents and my mother and her sister went up to Detroit to work in the munitions factories. They made bomb fuses. My family pitched in and helped save the Old World!

There was no way operation sealion could ever have been successful. Germany could never have conquered the UK it was a fantastical nonsense that even senior German officers knew could never succeed. To invade the UK in 1940 you needed naval superiority, the Germans never came close to that.

Best I remember, Churchill planned to retreat to Canada if all else failed. German would not get the Royal Navy, so Canada was safe. By then, American opinion was turning, more and more, against the neutralists and America Firsters. Note his comment that the New World, with its immense power, would eventually come to the aide of the Old. He knew what FDR was thinking.
@@redskindan78 Problem wasnt FDR, it was congress. FDR couldnt go to war without the permission of congress. FDR wanted to but couldnt. Churchill was also fighting his own political battles since Nazi Germany offered an armistice, and some in parliment wanted to agree with it since the costs of maintaining the war was so great. This is partly the reason hitler went on to invade Russia seeing that he would eventually gain a ceasefire between England and could focus on his eastern campaign. Pearl Harbor changed everything, it meant that the US was going to join, reinforcement of troops gave Churchill the political leverage to silence those that would sign an armistice with Germany.

People forget how bad the situation was in Europe through 1939-1940. Poland was attacked by the two most powerful countries in the world, and destroyed in no time. The third strongest power on the mainland (France) fell faster than Poland, and the fourth most powerful power (Italy) helped Germany do it. Britain was alone, they lost all their equipment at Dunkirk (almost lost the entire army!), And they had a weak air force compared the the Germans. They knew that dark times were ahead, but they simply said "no". They knew that the Germans couldn't land because of the powerful Royal Navy, and that was enough to stick with it.

I think, but someone better informed may correct me, that this is Churchill recorded sometime after the War. The original Commons speech was not recorded. Parts of the speech may have been heard at the time but read by a BBC radio announcer?

So, they would use a BBC broadcaster, who sounded somewhat similar to Churchill, I think (could be wrong) to do the speeches, Winston had done in the House of Commons. We know Churchill did do this speech again, either just after he’d just done it in the House of Commons as Churchills secretary would write every single word Churchill spoke, so then he’s done it on radio just after, his or after the war as you say. I’m quite sure this is Winston speaking but it’s either, just after the commons then done on radio or after the war, it’s complicated with Churchill speeches, as you had him doing them and a BBC Broadcaster doing them.

He was 66 years old when he took office as a wartime leader, the age when many people retire from work. He didn't have a great speaking voice, but the words and his delivery were supreme. His fighting spirit knew no bounds.
What a marvellous orator this man was. This speech that he gave should be written down, translated into as many languages that are capable of accommodating it, and then read out to all that all may understand what British resolve really is. Truly exceptional.

It’s amazing hearing this, and to think how scared the British were. Alone now.. for an entire year they would be alone , facing the German army.. yet they never ever gave up or thought about surrender. There are bitter weeds in England..

When I was a kid in the 60s his speeches were still played at times on radio and tv. He was the greatest statesman and personage to walk this earth in many centuries. He stood alone against fascism even when many others had abandoned him and their country and their honour.

@@jeannesandner1918 There was no leader comparable to Churchill on any continent or in any country at that time. IMO. He singlehandedly opposed Hitler until such time as the world woke up to what was happening. There has never been another like him.
Churchill is one of the people who makes me glad I was born an English speaking person. Only those who speak English as a first language know how great his eloquence is. wow.
It's not a matter of being a native speaker. I'm not one, and I'm always captivated by his speech.
Not only... English is , sadly, not my first language nor my nation's language but my love of English and forever gratefulness to the saviors in those dark hours ,to say the least, also come from Churchill's speeches and strength. We so need a Churchill today...

Not really, English is my fourth language and I can easily feel his eloquence. Not so keen on his lack of vocalisation though, he reminds me of Patrick Moore on his later years.
I think you’re right. Non native English speakers really miss something, but I’m not sure what it is, my guess is the emotional timbre....the ancient connotations at deep strata of the words and phrases mixed with tone and context. The same with all languages, I’m sure. I think having fluent English as a second language cannot account for the depth of the unconscious affect of this speech. I’m convinced he,wasn’t aware of that either.
No one is perfect but what a great!!! Statesman and Leader. Pity there is no one like him today. All The Great leaders are gone. Thank goodness he and all the people of England and allies fought for freedom and came through. I feel that all this is slowly been pushed into the back ground.
This was not recorded in the House of Commons. That was not allowed in those days. Churchill agreed to record some of his early war speeches later in the war. From memory, this one was recorded in 1943. And thank God he did. Hearing him speak the words is special, an actor cannot replicate that voice or raw emotion.

He inspired the British people facing total annihilation from the most technologically advanced Army & the largest Army world had ever seen to fight back, if necessary alone & we were alone from 1938-1940 then Aussies, Canadians& polish & India came to help, he inspired the world for this is the mother land, Britain is the parent of so many new nations
