Hi Matthew, What is a sensible cruising speed in Matilda on a generally flat motorway? You have larger diameter wheels right so that should have dropped the revs.
Amazing landscapes and very good documentary, also music is very cool. The temperature I saw is a very big problem, in primis for the truck. Wasn't there no possible to heat the fuel in the tank with a resistance or similar system? Anyway you are very lucky to be in those places!! The problem with the fuel tank is it’s steel and contains 330 litres of fuel at -30°. It requires a significant amount of energy to heat this up. I stuck a Jerry can on my gas burner inside the truck. After 15 minutes I gave up trying to heat the Jerry can. Thanks for watching. Still editing Russia but that’s the bit before Mongolia . The bit after Mongolia is on my channel, Siberia to Kazakhstan.

Kris K. If, as you say, -30C is not that cold, then you should really experience it under the same conditions these guys did. Lying on the road under the truck, trying to effect repairs, with frozen tools, is a far different scenario from going for a pleasant hike in it. These guys were in a severe survival situation. Always compare apples with apples !!. Cheers.
Hello Arnold. You can buy vehicle like this in the UK and Germany. There are many Germans with these vehicles. The truck is a Leyland Daf T244. If you need help getting one I can help. You can email me through my website. Www.MatthewPayneAdventurer.co.uk
We had decided not to do any cold weather prep as we had planned to cross Mongolia in October. Due to delays that ended up being November, December. If I was knowingly going into that kind of environment with a vehicle then ideally take a petrol vehicle. Not always possible so I would fit a heated fuel filter. Also engine pre heat which I do have using my Webasto pro 90 controlled by a valve to heat either inside, the engine or both. Next I would make one of the heaters petrol. Definitely have 2 heaters, one petrol. It will be more reliable in the cold and burns cleaner meaning less maintenance on it. A log burner is nice to have, I installed one a few weeks after this video in Siberia. Cannot get easier than a solid fuel heater. But it would mean carrying a lot of fuel with you. We improved radiator blinds using a foam mat we carried as a work mat, to lay on when under the truck. And we purchased a wool blanket to go over the engine in Mongolia. Not saying you should do this as there is obviously a fire risk. We also had to change all the oil in the drive train while in Mongolia as it was just too thick. You can get oils that are good for warm and cold weather climates. My domestic battery’s sit on the floor. I would insulate the batteries from the wall and floor. Also ensure water pipes down run along the floors. And ideally have a heated wire inside your waste water pipe.
Really enjoyed the video and the incredible Mongolian scenery, thanks. What do you think caused the prop shaft failure? You guys are running very large tyres, could this be a factor? And what are your thoughts on Webasto heater failures? Seems they didnt work in extreme cold even when you supplied pre-heated fuel to them...
Prop shaft. The seals on that shaft were probably original so 28 years old. Maybe due to the cold and old seal it leaked a little allowing oil to lubricate the nut. Maybe the nut was not tight enough, maybe the cold also made the nut a little loose. All those combined maybe. I don’t see the wheels / tyres playing a part. Diesel heaters. The webastos say they will work at -40°. We found -30°c to be the limit with our setup. That is pulling diesel from the main fuel tank. So the pump was pulling diesel up out of the tank. I later changed my setup and put a Jerry can in the garage. (boot / trunk) and gravity fed the diesel to the pumps. Also having the diesel in the garage it was much warmer above 0°c. However the pump was still mounted outside. This worked fine at -45° which was the lowest Temperature experienced on the trip. I have 2!heaters. One is a webasto air top, the other thermal pro 90 water heater which heats coolant, circulates it around the radiator inside the truck, plus the heat exchanger for blown air heating and the hot water tank. At -40°c the air top started to leak fumes inside the truck. I can only imagine the gaskets struggles to cope with the temperature differential. This maybe why Webasto say they work to -40°c. Having to open all the windows and vent at -40°c wasn’t fun having just got the truck to a nice cosy temperature. But I still had the other more powerful heater so no problem. Good to have redundancy.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 ya I saw that in the video, which I loved! I think I will put my hydronic heater inside to keep it from getting too cold if I ever spend time in the cold lol. We plan to cruise around the Baja with ours so no real concern about the cold. My biggest issue will be converting my truck to 4x4. Having a hard time finding axles with air brakes and a transfer case
@@1966cambo the problem was the diesel being so cold. Later on I rigged a Jerry can up so that the fuel was gravity fed to the heater. This worked in -45°.
Hi Matthew, I have followed your adventures for a while now. We depart for Mongolia in March! Can I ask why you decided to travel through this part of the world in winter? If you were to do it again would you do it differently?
James Amos . We actually planned to cross Mongolia much earlier. But there were some delays, injection pump needed replacing in Kazakhstan causing a 3 weeks delay, we extended our time in Siberia, and then needed to wait another 3 weeks for a clutch slave and master just before entering Mongolia on the 6th November. And Mongolia is too amazing to rush so we extended our visa for another 4 weeks. Total 2 months. Would I do it again. Yes. I will go back to Mongolia but this time in the summer. As it will be a different experience. If wanting to interact with locals then the summer will offer a lot more opportunities. And I imagine a lot more wildlife. I am very excited for you to be heading off on a trip. Exciting times ahead. 😁
If you are still planning and want to experience bit of everything Mongolia has to offer go west from Ulaanbaatar to Zavkhan. You will get high peak mountains, sand dunes, large lakes, forest and best of all very accessible by car such as Land Cruiser.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902Thanks for your reply Matthew. It certainly looked awesome! As you can imagine coronavirus has stalled our plans entirely but we are still planning on leaving for travel as soon as things open up again (currently in Spain waiting things out).
@@125022 cool. Hopefully by than things will be a lot better. Mongolia just recently had its first internal Covid infection and the country is in a lockdown for a month. Also reading through the news it looks like the country won’t be opening its borders in 2021 if vaccine is not successfully so 2022 probably more realistic.
How weird that I knocked the nut off the drive pinion. Didn't have a coupling? And to tighten it with a screwdriver and a hammer you can do the adjustment work
Do something about the climate? Drive around ? It is quite natural for the climate to change. More CO2 makes the Earth greener. Since industrialization, the Earth has become 4% greener. Because of Co2, plants can grow where it was otherwise too dry. But it's good to believe what's wrong and then do the wrong thing. Otherwise, I love to do as you do and enjoy seeing the landscapes.
Blimey.....7 days you will always remember......but for all the wrong reasons because something went wrong every day!! Not sure which was worse...heater pump failing or prop shaft parting company! With those sort of temps both were bad!
I mean, you definitely tried to put together a documentary.. but there was no narrative, no direction... every other selfie camera angle was just "bout minus 20 degrees last night" and "lakes are frozen, trying to find water" I mean, I'm 15 minutes into it and I don't think i've gotten much else than those sentences and a 2 minute long drone shot at the beginning....
Ryan Douglas, . . . and where are your video/documentaries to look at where the rest of the viewing audience can critique ?? . . . . filmed under the same conditions of course !!!.
Good effort, Ryan. Quite badly written critique; feels rather vague and subjective, admitting you haven't even finished watching the full video, without any clear constructive comments [i.e. 'praise sandwich']. Your comment is fairly redundant in insight, only stating what you didn't find, didn't like. I would recommend trying to push yourself beyond the surface level, and at least give a clear conclusion, instead of appearing to give up. The "I means" are unnecessarily repetitive, for what is presumably intended to be either one or two sentences, or perhaps three. You could also work on grammar and punctuation. However, you tried to articulate yourself to a degree about what you experienced watching only 15 minutes and contribute to the algorithm, so thanks.
hello Matthew, Great videos, fascinating pictures and impressive landscapes that you present there. But ... as a non-Englishman with normal English skills it is not possible to understand you. And unfortunately that's not just me. It is a pity and we would have loved to understand your explanations. Especially about your problems because of the cold and the subject of heating ... Best regards and stay healthy Chris
Did you ever did any research about the winters in the Gobi Desert. You look total unprepared, you line are freezing, then you should, if you have been preparing this journey since 9. Stop complaining and get on with it.
We did do research and the time we planned to be there was not as cold. A number of delays meant we were in Mongolia 2 months later than planned. Had we known we would be there in November/ December more preparation would have been made. To say total unprepared is unfair. My truck is full of tools, equipment and clothing to be working on those temperatures. I spent 4 hours working out in -30° and didn’t get cold. None of what said was a complaint. Just telling it how it was. I was having the time of my life.

(I apologize with all who read, but my English is not so good at the moment, I'm going to fix this..) 😅😉👍📹👊💪🌍🌏🌎🚚🌌
The problem with the fuel tank is it’s steel and contains 330 litres of fuel at -30°.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 I see man. The important thing it keep going with your journey, also the problem you meet is part of this. So have a good travel to you and your crew! 😉👍👋📹
-30C is not that cold. I use to go hiking at -27. If you keep moving its fine when you stop that's when it gets cold :).
Cheers.
Hallo Matthew
Hello Arnold. You can buy vehicle like this in the UK and Germany. There are many Germans with these vehicles. The truck is a Leyland Daf T244.
If you need help getting one I can help.
You can email me through my website. Www.MatthewPayneAdventurer.co.uk
Matthew, what would you do differently in terms of equipment and prep. if you were going into -35 degrees C again?
And ideally have a heated wire inside your waste water pipe.
wondering why you turned those diesels off they hate the cold
😍😍👍🏻👍🏻
Well cant expect to see much big game wild life because they can hear your deisel engine snap crackle and pop from about a couple hundred kilometers
Hahahahahahaha! That is so funny you should be a comedian snap crackle pop that’s a good one maybe we should call him rice crispy!
Howdy Mattew, Are you there right now (Dec.8. 2020)? Awesome footage. thanks. safe travels and Merry Christmas.
And a Merry Christmas to you
No not there now . Back in the UK.
Very cool video!
I was wondering why you didn’t install your diesel heater inside instead of in that box under the body?
I have a air heater installed inside. And the coolant heater outside.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 oh, I thought in the video you warmed the diesel up but then decided it wasn’t the diesel being too cold?
@@1966cambo I did warm up the dosing pump. But that didn’t help. It was all down to cold diesel.
What is your truck?
Donald Goldney it’s a Leyland Daf T244
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 cheers for that, made in England i guess its a 4x4 too love the videos must get out there one day
Hi Matthew, I have followed your adventures for a while now.
@@brownnutter thanks! We will add this route to the list. We are still planning on going perhaps 2022 with 2021 exploring eastern europe
Maybe next time you should go Mongolian men they they will help you
How weird that I knocked the nut off the drive pinion.
There are far less animals in the world now, as well as habitats. Thats sad. We caused that. We are supposed to make the world a better place.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 there aren't less animals there are more, the trouble is they are humans!
Really enjoy thanks.
Blimey.....7 days you will always remember......but for all the wrong reasons because something went wrong every day!! Not sure which was worse...heater pump failing or prop shaft parting company! With those sort of temps both were bad!
Bulletguy07 some adversity make the adventure. Next big trip won’t be so cold.
great edit but the music is a bit much

I mean, you definitely tried to put together a documentary.. but there was no narrative, no direction... every other selfie camera angle was just "bout minus 20 degrees last night" and "lakes are frozen, trying to find water" I mean, I'm 15 minutes into it and I don't think i've gotten much else than those sentences and a 2 minute long drone shot at the beginning....
Thanks Ryan. Fair criticism. Must do better.
However, you tried to articulate yourself to a degree about what you experienced watching only 15 minutes and contribute to the algorithm, so thanks.
hello Matthew,
Great videos, fascinating pictures and impressive landscapes that you present there.
But ... as a non-Englishman with normal English skills it is not possible to understand you. And unfortunately that's not just me.
It is a pity and we would have loved to understand your explanations. Especially about your problems because of the cold and the subject of heating ...
Best regards and stay healthy
Chris
Hi Chris. I do apologise. Its something i need to work on.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 I live in Canada I know how more difficult is to work under those conditions. Minus 20 is very common here in Alberta, but is not easy. All the best
