Great video but: Can’t believe the $75 difference between Koio and Greats is only given by the type of leather. You normally buy 1 meter of top quality leather (Common Project’s one) from Marche for around 75€ (obvs Common Projects pays it much less because they may own the factory or they do quantities). With that you can make around 3/3.5 shoes, which means around 25€ per shoe. Now, even if Greats was using the best calfskin in the world and Koio the worst one, the maximum difference will be around 25€ ($25 just to stay large). It wouldn’t even get close to $75.
Over the last year I've bought two pairs of greats, the new republic Kurt and the Beckett Simonon reids. The greats are definitely extremely comfortable, though the silhouette is a tad bulky. I got the Kurt's for $45 which is an amazing value, they look really good but don't expect them to last long. The Beckett Simonon Reids look rather nice, and yes the laces are excellent. They have started to crease a bit more than I would like The m gemi Buffalo leather ones I've tried looked amazing, but returned them due to the price
Yes! You liked the M.Gemi's! My favorite. Regarding Beckett Simonon. You commented on the soles being rigid. I have found the entire shoe is a little rigid and tight. It's more narrow than the Gemi, so I think you really need narrow feet for the Beckett Reids. I do hope they break in, but so far...still rigid. And I've mentioned my aesthetic issue with the Beckett's...the soles outside is thicker and there is less leather over top than others. Seems like the cheaped out on the quantity of leather to rubber ratio. I won't buy another Beckett, but I'm sure eventually I'll get a third M.Gemi.
OMG, your comment on the B.S. soles is so true! I found in unwearable without some customization. I had to get some Dr. Scholl's insoles, and the laces were too short that I couldn't tie them and had to order a longer custom pair. On the bright side, the B.S. customer service covered to cost for the new laces.
Just to add my personal experience between the Greats and the Koio's, Koio not offering half-sizes is what lead me to the Greats. I really wanted a pair of the Koio triple whites, but size 10 was way too snug, 11 was too big... the Greats 10.5's fit like a glove. Not sure if the other brands have half-sizes or not, but just something for people to be aware of! If i'm paying what these sneakers run for $$$, it's gotta fit right! Love all your videos Kavalier, I come to you before any new purchase now!

I’ve had my white koios for 2 years. I literally wash the laces and clean the shoe with shoe cleaner and they’re pretty much new all over again. Best investment for me.
Greats has recently switched from margom soles to their own rubber. Having tried both the margom and new rubber, I’ve gotta say, their new soles are thicker, heavier, and less comfortable than the old margom soles. Have you seen this? What are your thoughts?
I just got my pair of Royales today thinking that they were Margom. I'm not happy at all about this. I'm glad I found your comment as confirmation. Not sure if I should keep them now.
I usually respect Ashley Western's opinion but her latest white sneaker comparison was an absolute joke. She rarely ever makes sponsored videos yet they endorsed Koio that one time. Such a shame
Notorious544d Well me personally I don’t mind her endorsing Koio because the shoes are a great value and very much worth the price but it’s that she belittled the competition (GREATS) to the point where she says they’re an overpriced Stan Smith when they’re clearly far superior that did it for me.
That's the first review I've seen from her when I was researching Koio and Greats for my next shoe. Her review wasn't even close to the information we get from this channel. Also her snarky responses to some of the comments on her video were off putting. I won't be coming back to that channel.
I have a pair of svenssons and I bought them in Europe for about 180 euros, with quick shipping. I’ve owned them for about 8 months now, so far. The shoes Look amazing, the Feel amazing. The M. Gemi ones are on sale right now in some colorways. Seems like a great buy at 195 if you like the color. I think it looks beautiful, especially if you already have white sneakers.

@@jayd8547 Haha, I know! Ecco definitely seems to be the sleeper shoe brand out there on these fashion channels as nobody seems to have heard of them. I think I'm up to six pairs including some dress shoes - it's by far my go-to shoe brand for consistently comfortable shoes. They may not be handcrafted from the finest leather in an Italian village, but they're sooooo comfortable. I've tried the Crown North Hampton, the Greats and the Koio and passed them all up.
3:40, you're comparing Koio's leather material (calfskin) to Great's leather cut (full grain). This is an incorrect comparison, since a calfskin leather can ALSO be full grain, it just depends on the cut. Just a heads up.
This is really sweet, as a tall guy (even in Holland) it is a pain to find slim fitting shirts. I would definitely try this, you instantly feel much better when your shirt is fitting well. I only found out I liked shirts when the slim fit fashion popped up. I now only wear slim fitted dress shirts with extra sleeve length but maybe I'll go and buy that sewing machine so I can even tackle casual shirts with size XL and slim them down (as large sizes often give extra length).
You need to check out Buttero Tanino Low! The design is slightly different compared to all these other minimalist sneakers. 😊 Made in Italy, a beatiful design and quality materials.
Svensson are Full Grain Leather and costs 140-190 EUR in E.U. Free shipping inside EU for orders above 200 EUR. You should also check CARLOS SANTOS from Portugal. Full Grain Leather and prices around 230 EUR. Great quality and patina. Yes! Patina.
Thanks for mentioning the Crown Northampton Shoes from England which I have. But Greats still a good investment if you’re looking for a reliable leather sneakers.
I went to Nordstrom, looked at a pair of Common Projects the first thing I noticed when I held them was the weight it felt heavy, compared to the other all white sneakers in the store that felt lightweight. Just the weight alone felt like you were getting something of great value. Mind you, there where no Greats, Koio, Svensson & Kent Wang in Nordstrom to compare to Common Projects. The Kavalier do Koio has around the same weight as Common Projects?
By this point, I don't even know how I found your channel, but all hail to you. Great reviews with that comprehensive "journalist" approach that I love (I am a journalist myself). Unfortunately I only spent some weeks/months in the states every few year, but I definitely do my shopping tour based on your videos.
Hey Jon, I saw your white sneaker video and how you covered the New Republic sneakers. I've had a pair for about 7 months now and they still look really good with regular use. I've even had to run in them a few times. The laces cover the creasing at the toe area so it has the appearance of being new.
Thank you for the unbiased, honest and helpful review. Some TH-cam reviewers seem to have yielded to the mighty dollar and turned to advertising disguised as reviews.
One brand you had in the original roundup that didn't make it into this one is one I have been strongly considering. That is Oliver Cabell. Does that mean that several of the ones you featured here you would personally recommend ahead of OC?
Alpha M cemented the feeling among many of us that sponsorship = bad (sell out) when he actually argued that MVMT watches were better than Rolex. Yes, I saw his mea culpa follow up where he said he was joking, but I study body language and communication, and I'm telling you, he was dead serious, and later attempted to cover for himself once he realized what a sell out he had become. I do respect you, however, and appreciate all your videos. You've led me to some great male fashion products, including Crown Northampton. Without your 20 sneaker video, I never would have known about them. Thank you
Hey Jon! Thank you for all that you do. Your channel has been an awesome discovery. I'm super excited to start building a better wardrobe. I've got a question for you, which I actually asked The Style O.G. on his page as well. What are your thoughts on the second luxury sneaker an individual should purchase, assuming they want a different color? I've been thinking brown or burgundy because of the versatility (chinos and jeans of many colors), but can also see a case being made for a casual dress shoe (oxford wingtip). I'm a sneaker guy, so I know I won't wear dress shoes with jeans all of the time, and thus owning at least one or two additional luxury sneakers would be wise. Anyway, let me know what you think! I also have heard that a boot could be a great second pair, but am still wondering what color, whichever one might choose (sneaker, boot, casual dress). I'm also a fan of the black sneaker with white sole, but recognize it's lack of versatility when compared to brown or burgundy shoes and thus am avoiding that one for now. Thanks again!
That's a great question! Really comes down to your normal color selection though. For me, outside of white, my next choice is brown. I have a pair of the Paul Evans sneakers and they're great, depending on your style also consider a gumsole, maybe black or white upper with a gumsole for a cool look. I have a couple in navy but rarely wear those. Brown, burgundy, or Grey would be my top picks.
Great video. I've had my eye on a Minimalist sneaker. I have looked at a few reviews and your review is the best one I have seen. I think I will go with the Greats. Thanks man!
Why would you recommend Beckett and Acemarks? Acemarks is mostly marketing and Beckett Siminon has questionable stitching and is not so good quality. Koios, Greats, Svensson and Crown NH are fantastic quality for the money!
I have a pair of koio that I can only Wear for a short amount of time, I don’t know if it’s my feet specifically but they are the most uncomfortable shoe I own, They look 10/10 though. I would like to try greats as an alternative because I can’t wear koio for the life of my feet
I would like to see a follow up on the Ace Marks. I have the Koio’s in black and white and was considering an all black pair. However, if Ace Marks are better than I’ll invest there.
I have a dark grey suede Koio (capri Roccia) that im pleased with. They have an off white called Nuvola (cloud) that I'll probably get eventually. The avalanche nude (koio) is a good looking shoe and its a different silhouette.
Ah disappointed there was no Erik Schedin in this lineup finally, it was the "original" all white minimalist sneaker and a popular Common Projects alternative when Achilles Low became popular. What I will say is what's understated in all these Common Project comparisons is that the overall shape of the sneaker should be noted more. There's a lot of low top white sneakers well constructed with great materials but the shapes are often where they drop the ball. Particularly the ankle, eyelets, tongue height and toebox. There is a minimalism I appreciate beyond the lack of branding here. The patches of suede on the Koio or the ankle panel design on the Svensson, the panel stitching on the Greats etc take away from the minimalism of the shoe. I'm not knocking them for it, just that they're bad alternatives aesthetically. I find that width of the shoes from the front vary wildly along with the laces (like you said) that really make the Achilles look so nice. This might seem like minor nitpicks but when you wear the shoes side by side day by day or know the shapes it's really noticeable. I'll use the Svenssons as an example (a shape I do not like) in an effort to not to drone on forever. I mentioned the backtab design which is very adidas-like but the Svensson's ankle is also really deep cut and the padding bulges out quite a bit. Another thing is the toe cap seems longer, rounder and wider. I don't want to write forever but basically, if I had to rank the shoes this would take points off the Svenssons. Now of course, someone could always just prefer the Svenssons but then we wouldn't be talking about Common Projects then :). Alright I'm done.
I always trust your opinions, you’re very honest and I usually buy products that you recommend that I didn’t know were out there etc. Are you going to the menfluential conference this year?
Just got M. Gemi all white sneaker for 178$ with 50$ off Honey code. Free Shipping and no taxes. I thought it was great deal. Im really clueless when come sneakers, only ever own one navy stan smith bought at marshals for 25$. Im more knowledgeable when it comes to running shoes cause thats what i do. But as you grow up high 20s, cant be wearing running shoes everywhere. I like a classic - one time buy high quality shoe ( cant afford have multiple colors and materials like this guy hehe ). Looking for good navy suede driver and chukka boot next. Any recommendations on chukka boots blood or brown color. Your videos are very helpful.
Awesome review. May I ask what’s your size with the Greats Royals and the Beckett Simonon Reid? I’m reluctant to order online because there’s no way to try them on for size first. I’m a size 9.5 with the Royale
With a blindfold I'd have a hard time distinguishing which one is which (leather quality, weight, sizing) so you can't go wrong with either one. Oliver Cabell's have the name on the back, if that's something you care about then go with Svensson.
So i hate the look of mixing suede and leather on sneakers so koio are a no. What would be the best other than the Koio? Also not keen on the perforated toebox on the Greats as they seem less put together and juvenile because of it but I'd have to try hands on. So what would be the best option?
Can you do a side-by-side silhouette comparison of your favorite from the other channel, the Crown Northamptons in white vs. the Common Projects? It looks like the Crown Northampton is less 'white' and wider than the CPs, but it's hard to tell from the stock pictures.
Do the ace marks have like a raised heal kinda like the koio? How long did it take for your koio to break in? Did you find if they stretched at all? Some times the width gets a little tight for me. I could probably size up but then afraid the shoe might be too big. I have the all black koio and trying to figure out brand to get in all white. If I go koio I’ll try sizing up one, but was leaning towards ace mark
Great video. Was originally looking to get the Greats but then I found out they don'tship to EU. Thanks to this video I found a good alternative, and ordered the svensson ones, thanks man! :D
Are the ace marks bulkier or is it just me? I have the greats. I want a sleeker silhouette but I need half sizes. Most premium sneakers don't come in half sizes. Why? Because I'm 12 true to size and when shoes run big size 12 looks huge. Size 11 is too small. Great video btw.
Hi thx for the reviews as always! I was wondering which brand among those you presented is the most suitable for a wide foot? I think that my feet’ width is EEE...
Hey John, Do you have any experience with the company Shoeology? They claim to make their shoes handmade from full grain leather in Portugal, positioning at $139 and cutting to $89. Is Shoeology legit?

Also, have you tried Velasca or SevenFeetApart? Thanks in advance, keep it up!
would you go for the common project Achilles low all white for 380$ or get the one with the back florescent heel also all white for 200$ on sale for farfetch?would the yellow heel restrict the usability of the shoes?
Jon, I want a pair of light weight waterproof hiking boots as a beater whenever I travel. I have seen those ones from cole haan look very good, or should I buy from brands like Thursday? I think hiking boots are trending and everyone needs one pair, really want to hear your opinion on them. Thanks.
I love leather shoes, i love suede shoes, but when theres suede on leather I’m not a fan personally. Something about it doesnt sit right with my style so i wont be buyin koio. I respect the idea of koio and the crasftsman ship but theres just something about those 10 gold digits that just drive me wild theres nothin like cps for me and gettin lightly used or even new ones on ebay or grailed for 120-340 its perfect. I still like my greats i just wear em in shit weather or to parties whenever cps could get ruined. Anyways great vid Jon you the best around❤️
dni33 they still have that separate piece of leather on the heel in the same shape that the suede would be in if it were there and i dont personally like that. I want a smooth single piece of leather on the lateral and medial side of the shoe that meet at a single back seam cuz to me that is ultimately simplicity ya know
saw so many good videos about beckett simonon, almost going to get a pair myself. after watching this video, I would probably not gna get them because they takes so long to make and the cushion does not sound as promising as other video explained.
That is a proper shoe review. Way to go. I so want to get the Royales, but being from Toronto, by the time I pay shipping and duties I'd cross the 200 mark.
@@The_KavalierI went to their site and had a chat with one of their associates. They told me they don't ship internationally and my option is Nordstrom. From Nordstrom Royale will cost me 350 CAD with exchange rate, shipping and duties. I am now looking at options on eBay.

Svensson are Full Grain Leather and costs 140-190 EUR in E.U. Free shipping inside EU for orders above 200 EUR. You should also check CARLOS SANTOS from Portugal. Full Grain Leather and prices around 230 EUR. Great quality and patina. Yes! Patina.
thanks for covering svensson, i have a pair and bought it on a whim without seeing reviews on them. i knew they were comparable to CPs tho.
Thanks for mentioning the Crown Northampton Shoes from England which I have. But Greats still a good investment if you’re looking for a reliable leather sneakers.
Nice vid. Koi is my fav 👌🏾
What about Thursday boots low top sneakers and Oliver cabell?
Which shoes are the most comfortable to wear all day? Comfort is everything to me.
Unfortunately I only spent some weeks/months in the states every few year, but I definitely do my shopping tour based on your videos.
what about thursday sneakers?
No need to defend your opinions. Keep doing what you do, and doing it well.
The video that I've been waiting for! It really helped me made my decision to pick up Koio!
🙂
Great video. I've had my eye on a Minimalist sneaker. I have looked at a few reviews and your review is the best one I have seen. I think I will go with the Greats. Thanks man!
Why would you recommend Beckett and Acemarks? Acemarks is mostly marketing and Beckett Siminon has questionable stitching and is not so good quality.
Koios, Greats, Svensson and Crown NH are fantastic quality for the money!
I have a pair of koio that I can only
Wear for a short amount of time, I don’t know if it’s my feet specifically but they are the most uncomfortable shoe I own, They look 10/10 though. I would like to try greats as an alternative because I can’t wear koio for the life of my feet
I would like to see a follow up on the Ace Marks. I have the Koio’s in black and white and was considering an all black pair. However, if Ace Marks are better than I’ll invest there.
Straight up, would you prefer Koio or Svensson?
I have 3 pairs of Greats and a pair of triple white Koio along with one New Republic.
Great video. Thanks. Is there an update to this for 2021? Are Koio's quality the same? I'm leaning towards them.
have you tried goral? from uk like crown, cheaper price
Goral around £240 and Crown £210, see Crown still cheaper than Goral.
any thoughts on jak shoes (specifically the atom)?
I have the Greats in black and Ace Marks in white and I love them. Maybe getting Koio in brown it grey soon
Hey man. Congrats on the baby of course. Watching many of my favorite videos of yours again. Did you ever review the Oliver Cabell’s....?
I have a dark grey suede Koio (capri Roccia) that im pleased with. They have an off white called Nuvola (cloud) that I'll probably get eventually. The avalanche nude (koio) is a good looking shoe and its a different silhouette.
You have some of the best reviews on here. Thank you!
Kenneth cole kam, grenson sneaker 1 and artisan lab
What do you think about D.A.T.E Sneakers?
Hi, do you I think that I can use a size 46 on Svensson when I use a size 12,5/13 in Adidas.
Fantastic review! You just solidified my purchase of some new Koio’s. Thanks!
Are the Koio and Svensson sizing the same?
I always trust your opinions, you’re very honest and I usually buy products that you recommend that I didn’t know were out there etc. Are you going to the menfluential conference this year?
See you there!
Jon are those calf leather Koio a light gray color or white?
Hi can you help me decide whether I should buy Oliver Cabell or Svensson? Thank you.
With a blindfold I'd have a hard time distinguishing which one is which (leather quality, weight, sizing) so you can't go wrong with either one. Oliver Cabell's have the name on the back, if that's something you care about then go with Svensson.
@@The_Kavalier thank youuu 💕💕
Many thanks to your sharing. Greats is on my list but I found New Republic's Kurt Sneakers also have the minimalist look. Have you tried it before?
So i hate the look of mixing suede and leather on sneakers so koio are a no. What would be the best other than the Koio? Also not keen on the perforated toebox on the Greats as they seem less put together and juvenile because of it but I'd have to try hands on.
So what would be the best option?
Yooo I just ordered some Greats Woosters and Royale highs from their clearance sale, can't wait till I get them!
How’d they work out??
Great video man !
What watch are you wearing in this video ?
😎👊🏻👊🏻
Definately needed more time given to the ace Mark's cause I'm looking to buy a couple pairs priced at 169 but I do like the greats and koios...thx
If you had to chose between the Greats and M.Gemi at the same price, which would you chose and why?
I guess it’s late now, but it’d been nice to see your opinion of Buttero and Velasca, both great Italian brands.
Love the grey suede koios just saw they sell in Venice beach and Nordstrom and jcrew
Perfect video! I'm thinking about purchasing some Svenssons to upgrade my white Beckett Simonons.
Hey John, Do you have any experience with the company Shoeology? They claim to make their shoes handmade from full grain leather in Portugal, positioning at $139 and cutting to $89. Is Shoeology legit?
Thanks for video, very useful. Which one will be widest one?
Hey man, love the content you produce, great taste and very objective! I wanted to ask you about those Onism Official white sneakers you mentioned in one of your videos, you didn't give much information then but I would like to know your opinion on those after a few days of use? Also, have you tried Velasca or SevenFeetApart? Thanks in advance, keep it up!
would you go for the common project Achilles low all white for 380$ or get the one with the back florescent heel also all white for 200$ on sale for farfetch?would the yellow heel restrict the usability of the shoes?
Great video. What do you think of Goodman Brand shoes?
Thank you Parker!
Koio makes an all leather white shoe too though, and all suede shoes.
dni33 they still have that separate piece of leather on the heel in the same shape that the suede would be in if it were there and i dont personally like that. I want a smooth single piece of leather on the lateral and medial side of the shoe that meet at a single back seam cuz to me that is ultimately simplicity ya know
Great video! I have a budget of 100$ which sneakers or casual shoe would you recommend?
Keeping under $100 go with the New Republic Kurt
@@The_Kavalier Thanks! Also, have you tried Quvel shoes, and if you did, what are your thoughts?
saw so many good videos about beckett simonon, almost going to get a pair myself. after watching this video, I would probably not gna get them because they takes so long to make and the cushion does not sound as promising as other video explained.
That is a proper shoe review. Way to go. I so want to get the Royales, but being from Toronto, by the time I pay shipping and duties I'd cross the 200 mark.
Damn!
@@The_KavalierI went to their site and had a chat with one of their associates. They told me they don't ship internationally and my option is Nordstrom. From Nordstrom Royale will cost me 350 CAD with exchange rate, shipping and duties. I am now looking at options on eBay.
Finally I pulled the trigger on a pair on eBay for 70 USD, ended up as 140 CAD (including shipping and duties). No creases and no sign of wear inside or outside.
Have you ever worn Uniform Standard sneakers? I’ve been curious about that brand as well & would love to see a review on their quality
