Brakes WEAR DOWN over time .. which means you will start seeing signs that they need to be replaced. I just had a similar problem in my 2009 lincoln mkz. You can hear the brakes sequeling and grinding well before they would just go out. The longer you drive on it the more you risk eating into the rotor. Once you do that you go from 100$ brake fix to a 200$ brake and rotor fix. I never paid 300$ for the parts though. Maybe because his car is really old🤷🏾♀️but idk.
I actually drove a Honda civic w brake pads that were so worn there was no pad left and yep Def had to fix the rotors too but it didn't just go out all of a sudden
