My kids were just complaining about how "there's nothing to watch on TH-cam" and I kindly offered my roster of furniture restoration/ diorama building / château renovation channels to them. Weirdly, they didn't jump at the opportunity. I wish they would though, when I buy my castle someday I will need them to know about oxalic acid, sandpaper grit and the like...

What a beautiful piece! The gold leaf was a nice added touch. As much as you try to restore it to the original condition sometimes you just cannot and must enjoy and appreciate the "flaws" that it now has. The gold leaf just helps one to know this piece has had a life and is ready for a second one. Outstanding job once again.

I needed hinges for my built in medicine cabinet. They were less than ten years old and falling apart. The local ACE, Home Depot, Lowes, no goodsky. Searching online, I discovered San Diego Hardware. From jewelry box to barn door hinges, they had them all, and the medicine cabinet hinge I needed. And these aren't falling apart. That's amazing dude. I don't think you give yourself enough credit. I learn something new with every video. They're all simple tricks like steaming cracks but they work miracles and even though they're not 100%, off the shelf perfect, they're considerably better than what you had and probably a lot better than anyone else could do! I'd love to see you finish this one even if you have to give it modern hinges. I don't know what you see in these pieces but I'm glad you save them because you do a phenomenal job! I love the longer format too. Gives me more to watch. I think you should try making shorter videos of tips and tricks for helping others like a whole video on steaming out dents with footage from different projects and maybe some experiments with sacrificial pieces of wood just to research what would work best in whatever situation without risking an entire project. You have a wealth of knowledge and I think you make amazing videos!

How you handled the deep jagged damage on the top using the gold leaf was the way to go. It reminded me of the way the Japanese fix a break in a porcelain piece. I picked up an antique buffet at the side of the road. It had 4 doors with what I believe are the same hinges - knife hinges. Most were with the piece but I did not have the foresight to keep the hinges on the doors until I knew what I was going to do with them and then mark which hinges went in each spot. So of course some were quite bent, but as I was only keeping 2 of the doors I could pick from the “best” ones. These seemed to be handmade as the 3 holes in there was not identically placed from one hinge to the next. So, figuring out which hinge could fit where, and exactly where they should be placed as the areas they sit in were partially worn down, and combine this with the fact that was only my 2nd flip so my skill/knowledge level was super low, let me to also question “why did I pick up a piece that was destined for the garbage?” Anyway with a lot of research, some help from my only slightly more knowledgeable-in-this-area husband, and my natural unwillingness to quit even when he did, I got them in to a place where the two glass doors would open and close properly. I did consider replacing them with more modern hinges and that’s when I learned you can buy these knife hinges. They are a unique option and I think with modern, properly working ones I can see where they could be a nice option vs more typical ones. You did a fabulous job. I learned a lot from this video. Love the gold leaf. I was thinking maybe resin would work to highlight it but maybe the area was to narrow? Anyway the gold looks fabulous. Have a great day.

I liked the gilding idea, that gash reminded me of a little lightning bolt.
One thing I've tried with success is discount kinutsugi - fill a void to almost level with regular old grey JB weld, paint on a thin coat of cheap Japanese urushi lacquer paint, and then dust it with gold mica powder, repeating once or twice until it's flush and nice and gold. I've never tried it with wood (it works amazingly on ceramic cracks and chips, a coat of mod podge after all that and it'll be microwave/dishwasher safe forever) but I can't imagine it not working. It'd be interesting to see tried on chips in edge veneer, where you want it flush.
I like JB weld because they are the only brand that certify their epoxy as food safe, microwave and dishwasher safe, I've checked with about a half dozen brands and only JB weld have tested/verified their steel stick and classic formulas as safe/stable under heat and water.
Its also nice and cheap, JB weld is always on hand, and a little tube of urushi is about 4 or 5 bucks and gold mica powder is a dollar or so, and both will last for a very long time.
I'd be down to see more gilding/inlays like that when veneer is really dinged up. Match it to the hardware with some brass, bronze, gold, and silver mica!

Your work speaks for itself, Dash, and this video is no exception. I was very interested to what you would do with that big scratch. A few years ago, our dog jumped up on our dining room table because someone had left a couple of french fries and under the napkin and he went for it! Well, he got the fries and the table got the scratches! 😆Funny thing is that I've been putting my teapot right over them when I drink tea and they have diminished a little, but I see now I have to take off the finish first. Thanks again for a great lesson. Take care!

The gold leaf was a fantastic idea. I’d love to see that used for a really heavily damaged piece - very smart.

I really like the gold fill. That was my first thought as well. Sometimes leaving character on an old piece is what's best. I think saving the piece is the important thing and restoring function and beauty to what would have been trash.

It's cool to see you not only get better at every basic technique, but put effort into developing new ones. Celebrating imperfections is the way.

someone may have already suggested it. you could use a router to cut out that big scratch and have a matching place at the other end and inlay some other kind of wood. just a thought. it's easy for me to say that sitting here on my sofa when you have to do the work. keep up the good work I really enjoy watching your Channel

Amazing to see the piece in the ‘reveal’ from where it started! It looks beautiful, particularly the grain on the top. This kind of restoration may be frustrating for you, but it’s very instructive for us - I’m hoping to refinish a few mid-century pieces that were my parents, and am watching your channel for ‘how to’ advice. I was hoping to do the work this year but, like you, I would work outside, and in central Canada 🇨🇦 too, winter gets in the way.

I really like it!! I wonder if the door handles could have been gold leafed. I love the gold leafing on the top!! Nice job!

Dash, great content! The top is night and day. The hinges look like knife hinges, and can be obtained from most woodworking suppliers. Maybe do the hinges as an add- on, or a short.
