It was a blast showing you around Huaqiangbei, Linus! Thanks for taking time out of your insanely busy schedule. Turns out my editor already has a decent editing rig, so I'll be giving this PC away to a lucky fan in an upcoming video. If you're interested in winning this PC (and some cool and rare Strange Parts swag) definitely keep an eye out for that video.

@@abhy6269 I never who? Who?
Chinese fan here! So I'm gonna try and explain things a little bit here.
First about component price, Comparing China and the US, the things u can get cheaper in China are:
CPUs: In this video Linus bought a OFFICIAL CPU with stock cooler, however, a local Chinese who know his ways would be choosing something different for CPU. Shop in China actually sell CPUs that we call“散片”, which are CPUs that got produced in China but DIDN'T pass the quality test and therefore should have been thrown away, but we the "tricky" Chinese would pick from those imperfections and sell those still in fine but not great shape. Those "散片" CPU would end up 0.1 or 0.2 GHz lower in performance and have less stable overclocking abilities, but still it would fit for daily use. Typical thing with these "散片" are that they don't come with a box and stock cooler, but they are usually 100 Yuan(20 USD) cheaper.
Also it is also a performance-per-dollar choice to purchase SERVER CPU and motherboard combo like intel xeon E3 or G4560(of course it is not entirely legal for individuals to purchase these, so isn't "散片" deals, but that is the "grey" area for the current law.)
Cases: Unlike other components, computer cases do not require any high-tech to build, so here you can see many small brands selling all kind of bizarre cases, that are cheaper and, probably, use cheaper and lower-quality materials.
About the mall, 华强北 in Shenzhen:
Even though I live in Beijing, the great name of 华强北 is still famous to anyone interested in computer DIY. I think it's fair to say that it is the largest of its kind in all of China. And as you can see in the video, people there have things beyond imaginations in stock, and I'm pretty sure there are even more wired and less or more illegal products hidden in the back of their store. You can dig up pretty much anything in your wildest dreams, literally.
As one last reminder, I suggest STRONGLY that Strange Parts find a more stable power supply by a bigger brand. Because the best expert on computer DIY in China can save money in every way for better preformance, but NONE of us ever dare to save money on power supply. Because those cheap products from tiny brands don't have very strict quality test and you don't know what key components they've replaced. In short the cheap power supply is VERY LIKELY to go KABOOM(I mean it) in the future. Let's try not to risk that, like seriously.
Chengcheng Ding very interesting. For gpu how much you can save by going with a Chinese brand instead of international regconized brand ? Lets say for 1060, 1070, 1080 and rx 580 cards ?
Isn't Great Wall a good PSU OEM?
Really. Linus buys WESTERN branded components and expects a discount. Linus is a culturally deprived asshat.
这个合作可能谈的太急了。如果安排的好的话,各种oem的件搞起来,再diy个液晶屏,其实会挺有意思。去华强北这种地方最怕的就是没计划
Christopher Tan De Heng Hence the stupidity of a Westerner walking in expecting to buy western sourced products rather than buying locally sourced/labelled components assembled, verified and supported for a fraction of the price by a local vendor. Linus is an ignorant asshat.

Love Scotty from Strange Parts. Really disappointed in Linus though. I get that he may have been under a bit of stress being in a different country and all, but talk about half assing a collab. You are right, I should have said: That was cheap.
He planned this collab on the airplane on his way to China, he shared that on his podcast. So yeah, it wasn't a planned collab, it was a push from fans for Scotty and Linus to meet, and it just happened that both had time in their schedules to do it. Enjoy it for the weird mish-mash it was.

As a Linus fan from China, I want to say that:
1. It is EXTREMELY important to have a good translator in this case.
2. You can save at least 30% cost with more accurate communications and more clear objectives.
3. Please inform us before the next time you come to China!!!!
I see some of the people arguing your attitude to the strangers, but I can somehow to understand people's feeling when they first time go to this kind of marketplace. Even as a native Chinese, it is easy to be tricked out at the place like Hua Qiangbei without a clear objective. The retailers is actually prepared to bargain with you, but you just accepted that ridiculous price...
There's like 2k comments under this video in the Chinese video websites that are suggesting better purchase plans and calculating how much extra money he spent in his tour.
he could use just Google Translate app to communicate. simple as that :D
I'm wondering how a Chinese access to TH-cam, I thought they ban it in China
Smug Nanachi It is not hard for people with some network knowledge to break the censorship, and there are also tons of tools help people doing thisz such as VPN and Tor.
There are also users that translate and reupload vids from TH-cam to Youku(chinese ver of youtube). It's not like all of them access here, just someone reupload this vid to there.
Strictly speaking, the current law only forbids the construction of profitable commercial VPN service without necessary permission, and it is still fine to set up your own VPN server for personal usage, or people can also pay for the licensed VPN service providers.
I chose to build my own server because the government requires all licensed service providers to keep and share their records with authorities when necessary.

How dare he build it and not turn it on to see if it works!! :O
Lewys Cousins well they sell stuff to locals, it's extremely unlikely to have any foreigner to come here to buy anything so they won't be selling defective hardware then having angry customers who were probably living just next door
Cuz he couldn't test the water loop for leaks, duhh :)
For a first trip to China, Linus did right by getting someone who helped. Would have been better to bring a bilingual native with him and have them help, not another foreigner - unless that foreigner can say (for example) laptop in Chinese. My recommendation [that worked very well with me] is to learn Chinese (including how to say SSD or memory stick, etc. in Chinese), and then develop a good relationship with one (back-of-the-mall) vendor. Foreigners earn more money than locals in China, and helping the local economy is actually a good thing. I would negotiate a 50rmb price down to 20rmb but still pay the vendor 50rmb anyway - and tell her or him to pocket the extra. I would also bring other mono-lingual Americans to the same vendor for their computing needs, and that went a long way to develop a trust relationship. After a year, my vendor would go out of their way for me to do right: Telling me things like, that is fake or that is too expensive or that is a good price. If my vendor didn't have it, they would find it from others that did, and not disappear for a half hour, but actually bring me along. That relationship with one vendor was key, and that is what Linus or his friend didn't have.
Linus: **Worries about his money**
Also Linus: Spends $32,000 on a PC
Edit: this is the most likes i have ever gotten thx so much

A SLAVE COUNTRY
"From a distance it looked like plastic garbage. But it's actually aluminium garbage" - Linus 2018
I fxxking died laughing when the screen said 'Tranaction is cancelled for "some reason"' :'D
If you look, it actually says "some reasons"
Still better then Windows 10 errors
That is what I used to write in my first year as a professional
I love Strange Parts' Iphone videos, I use android but it is interesting as all hell
This video just popped on my recommendation, and I decided to watch it without realising it was 6 years ago hahahah
This Strange Parts guy is amazing... He is so humble.
especially compare to Linus bitching all day
he is jesus compared to linus
The sarcasm is real.
His channel is also really dope check it out.
Yeah, the guy is cool.
Been following both channels for a while now and its awesome to see you guys collab!
same
agreed!
THE COLLAB IVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!! MORE PLEASE! MORE!
If I remember right, on a previous WAN show, Linus said something about working with Strange Parts more frequently from now on. Maybe something about him joining Floatplane? It was on in the background so I dont really remember.
Yesss
It's really overwhelming and Linus just looks lost. while scoty is like it's normal lol
thats because he has lived there for almost a year
Yes but it's so hilarious to watch, This computer nerd just get swamped with familiar but really unfamiliar parts
It is normal, the hardware street there is hugeeeeee... i am so impressed while i was there as well.
PotziScheme that will be interesting, to see how Dennis actually works in a native language environment. Maybe he will have a different side.
Junhao Kuang yes that should be a fun video
Watching in 2024 and realizing that his video in Tawan he looks the same like 6 years ago
Shopping with you seems like a nightmare.
Here in Colombia , We have 2 Shopping centers , I walked it for over 10 hours to get PC parts , When you know , you know about PC parts dont simply buy everything at first.
damn he sold me that oem card, that rat bastard
yuri ruiz why not ride?
Most people probably wouldn't act that much different in the stores - the time is quickly running out, nobody understands what you're saying, merchandise is mostly unknown, prices are fluid and you have to know how much it's worth so you can haggle, in foreign currency no less and with no words to express yourself.
In China if you don't haggle, then they won't show respect for you, it's just the way it is in China, also its not just the foreigners in China who get either scammed or taken for a ride it's everyone lol. It's like they have a very short span if money making can be done today then they'll do so, they work on very short term basis, have heard of stories of when someone was being taken to this sleazy bar or place where they went to get tea, they got charged huge rates, told the police they looked as though they'd closed down the place, but then weeks later was up back up again and running, they'll always side with the locals when it comes to that, it's just the way it is in China lol.
Heard of some getting insane low prices for something that should have costed a lot more, firstly by being their first customer of a particular day and then because they haggled it down to an insane amount pmsl, they never really say no to their first customer it's again just the way it is there from what I have heard lol.
linus is the kind of person i would not want to hang out with under any circumstance
Arsenal 101 yeah I hate Linux aswell, it's all about windows 10
woosh
If I was Linus. I would have been severely depressed you wouldn't want to hang out with me. My life would have been worthless. Pheww, thank god I'm not Linus.
You're right, he's impatient and prejudiced
Exactly!!!!!!, He would make you want to slap him
I love that they're building a PC in the middle of the street and no one cares.
I have been binging Linus Tech Tips for weeks now, and he seems like a nice guy, but I get the impression that a bad temper tantrum short fuse is simmering under the surface with him at all times.
If he didn't have his own channel, he was probably hopping around next to Greta at some climate protest. With a long beard, and still a virgin

And their editor in Mexico says...

The United States is of America not itself America.

I lived in that city for 14 years before coming to the states. Had been to this mega-supermarket for electronics more than 100 times.
Some tips:
1. It's impossible to buy stuff with a cheaper price in China due to the high taxes (only getting higher with the tariffs) UNLESS: You buy a-billion-hand used hardware from a Bitcoin mine or some server rigs. Some lowest end products with weird naming that are supposedly for internet cafes or pre-built machines. Stuff that is already broken but can't be told from light inspections. DSLRs with fake shutter counts.........saw a shelf of D4s with wears from the Syrian War and shutter counts of 10,000s.....
2. Don't use the "foreigner" badge........ Price goes up anywhere from 1.5x to 10x the moment you say "I am an American". Try to find your Chinese friend that ACTUALLY KNOWS THE PLACE to go with you and let him do all the talking. DO NOT trust your friends' friends. I had a friend that got scammed by his own BROTHER IN LAW FFS.
3. If you think you are scammed horribly, contact the police......The police treat foreigners much better than they do for locals..........
4. This market can be a good place for weird customized stuff and some second-hand goods. You don't really want to buy new products for anything major here. The customer service is non-existent as many shops move from place to place due to the rent.
5. Don't ever buy any accessories such as SD cards, cables or anything cheap. They are 99% fake and you can never tell the difference with some high-end fakes. I saw a fake Magic Mouse once with half the price and the EXACT look and feel. The only difference is the weight.
6. This place is going through a downfall. There were way too many scams. Now people simply buy stuff online, where the price is sometimes even lower. The major incomes currently are OEM factories that use the place as a source market, a small number of geeks like me, old people and women who know nothing about the place.
I wanna go there now. It seems cool. I do have a sense of what to buy whether its fake or not, cus i went to thailand aswell
level 3 gay OMG that's my country ...be careful out there cuz I have a feeling that Thai people are not the same as they were in the past (well it is my country though)
Its true but you can find anything
Totally agree, especially the 2nd point.
This place also reminds me of a few IT malls in my country too. People don’t buy new from them anymore. I only go there for cheap second-hand goods (The monitor I got for about $30 still serves me well after 4 years) and D.I.Y. arduino/electronic stuff.
Was about to comment it till I saw this one, pretty much accurate. Meanwhile there is a counterpart called "ZhongGuanCun" in Beijing, it's as scammy as this one and it was already bankrupted.
If anyone is wondering where they went, they went to Huaqiang Bei in Shenzhen, China.
Kyle Li I'll pay you if you do my maths
Thanks, I tried to find it earlier on my lunch break but failed.
ya boi. Yeah, I had to search it myself but some people might not know how to phonetically spell it. Dont live in China, only know some Chinese lol
