Ever walk into a small computer shop and think “who is buying all these old products?” Well we did, and that weighed on us. Sleepless nights turned into exhausting days of wondering “just what is in that small computer shop?” It became such a problem that we found ourselves with no other option than to walk in, close the door behind us, and tell the owner “we’ll take everything you’ve got”. That’s what we did. We were forced to, if you really think about it. Just what are we going to get? Will there be RTX 4090s, or old Voodoos? 13th gen i9s or Socket 1 486s? Thunderbolt 4 cables or serial port connectors?

Most of those shops are barely scraping by though.

I was just curious, how is the business doing? What services do they main do? I was thinking a service shop might bring in the lion share of revenue to a small mom and pop computer shop but my guess with online shopping is that most people buy their computer hardware online most of the time instead of visiting small shops like this unless they are looking to get used old hardware that is hard to find.
@@tamwilfred it depends, if a local computer store has a cable or something small i almost always buy it local (convenience) . I only buy super expensive parts online to avoid instore markup.
@@soren00024 But you are probably the few that pop in and do something like that. The general trend is that most people would probably buy it online. The other thing is most people just did and bought small things like that, I would imagine the profit margins on things like that are very high. Even stores like BestBuy expanded their revenue by offering services like their Geeksquad.
This was awesome. I watched every second till the end. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS EPISODE!
I have literally had to clean out multiple shops, finding new inbox ancient tech, and various “rare” items. And although I knew most was obsolete and crap, it was still oddly emotional seeing so much unused tech that STILL HAS value to that one person in need. I’m currently going through a nuclear plant closure that’s been in existence since the 50’s, and seeing the history reminds me to: Always remember your roots, the products that got you to where you are today, and the diehards who continue to keep these old systems alive.
Thanks Linus and Team.

it was a handout.... its just funny, he makes the money back throught the youtube monetization.

Have to say, it may have felt seriously painful on the bank balance, but the banter with the LTT crew and store owner was priceless. What a really lovely man! I hope his truck gets fixed soon and he gets some really nice new stock to help out the local gaming populace! Big love to everyone involved in this vid.
@@PBMS123Exactly, 30k CAD is probably nothing for a single video. At the very worst, it breaks even with sponsor money and maybe a week of AdSense or YT Premium money.
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE. Spporting small business is one thing, but doing something like this is beyond generous.
It's really been a pleasure watching this channel. Of all the chaos in the world, this is a bright spot
I get that we can't have these everyday, or even every year, but this made me yell and cheer more than any TH-cam content I think I've ever watched. Gonna need a store update soon.
I don’t know, I honestly think if any channel were able to do this type of content somewhat regularly in the tech space, LTT would be that channel. Just think of the sheer amount of insane content that can come from this purchase, simply because they have access to the lab, and a team of people who can come up with all kinds of insane ways to use these items in entertaining ways. I guarantee we’re going to see quite a few of these items featured in upcoming videos, in turn making up the cost of production, as well as turning a very healthy profit on the fairly near term.
You cheer... For a video...?
@@AnUprightAnimal I have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be part of the next scrapyard wars.
@@jokka6388 Ohh, that would be pretty cool, and fix the issue with them being known in the tech space (thus getting better deals due to it). Would track with what he said on the last WAN show as well.
@Sarackosmo I nearly lost my voice from how hard I yelled at the top of my lungs when Linus leaked scrapyard wars. I yelled for a solid 10 seconds xD
This is hands down my favorite LTT video since Scrapyard Wars started. Incredibly wholesome and heartfelt what you guys did for that store. The way Linus and he went back and fourth the entire time made me feel like they've known each other for years. I really hope we see similar content in the future, both with that store owner and going to Mom & Pop shops.
Agreed!!
I was thinking the same. You said it better
I 100% agree

Going to need big sponsors. But definitely aworth the content possible. Ltt delivered a top video today
This is one of Linus's best segments in awhile. Good stuff!
DUDE!! Awesome video!! Thank u for helping this man! I'm sure for him it was humbling....exciting....emotional and FUN! Great job Linus tech tips.......I am proud of you all!!
You just saved this man’s business. It’s probably not your money because sponsors pay. But man I got emotional thinking about how happy this man is and his livelihood has been given a second chance. God bless you!
i mean it is his money because he could've just took the AD moolah and did nothing
Yeah, it's both. None of the three parties involved in this would have made the video if they weren't profiting from it, not Linus, not the store, not the sponsor. That may sound cynical but you're completely right about the impact it's making on this business owner and his life, so it's a great way to use that sort of benefit and bring someone else in on the pot of money
Whatever. I think there is a bigger picture here. This is chump change to LTT. I have been drifting away from LTT over the last couple years to the point I barely watched. The GN video got me hip to the big scandal.
This is the LTT content I used to love! Good job guys for listening to your staff and viewers!
Having your sponsors as products not related to your industry is a good move to regain trust. Also, Linus just being himself like this takes me back. I loved it when he humbly did the Louis Rossman video and also the Madison episode where she kept roasting and trolling Linus. Sorry, I know that last one is weird right now. I don't want to believe that she was some kind of serious victim but also don't want to believe she is making things up. Hopefully it is somewhere in the middle where ot was a few minor things and she might be exaggerated. Her and Linus's interaction was epic on that video and I wish she had been in more content.
Keep it Old School, quality over quantity. It might not maximize profits in short term but will mos def bring back and create more dedicated viewers!
its alright the sheep will continue eating the grass, of course its sponsor money what else would he use.

The owner seems like a really great guy. I was happy to see this video from Linus giving his business a good boost if not a life saver even.
You can tell he’s a used products salesman. Those prices were crazy lol
the laptop prices he gave were crazy
Some of the tower prices were actually pretty good for what they were, most of the stuff was wild though
this wouldve never worked on a regular person, but i can see linus tryna ride it so he can help as much as possible.
cant believe he wanted 10 grand for that 3 cases lmao thos barely worth 1G

This is, unequiviqally hands down the BEST LTT video. Not only was the shop owner an awesome guest, charasmatic and downright hilarious, but the support is unreal. It's not just the money, its also clearing out dead inventory and freeing up space for things that will actually sell. You're helping him twice over. Awesome job, LMG team!
Linus is unashamedly copying the current Mr Beast meta. Of course this video is going to do well. Not saying it’s a bad thing.
@@CJ-ur3fxI actually think that's not the case. Sure, he is trying to make this vid go viral but it is very diff from a MrBeast video. It appeals only to regular viewers/people who enjoy old tech. While Jimmy just goes around emptying stores, Linus was in just one store and negotiating the whole time. Many people who might click on the vid will close it after a minute or two.
Nevertheless I myself enjoyed it a lot and sincerely hope that I am wrong so that the video gets a lot of views which can revive the channel after the hiatus.
Great video, made me legitimately happy. A big thank you to linus and the team for coming up with this and such a funny video 💚
The chemistry between Linus and the store owner was amazing. Just the best.
That was an OUTSTANDING video. Huge props to LTT and The Ridge for this, you just made this guys year. I know it's not a feasible or financially sane thing to continue to do, but I would watch and share the ever loving shit out of this if it was turned into an annual series.
Schön hier aber haben sie schon ein Lockard Wallet?
That didn't make his year, that saved his life's work from going under. He has to pay upwards of $1000 Month just for the store front to house basically garbage or lose it all. Most would have cut and run years ago after Internet stole the market.
@@alpfalaitzkin83 der kam unerwartet
Sounds actually financially sane to do somewhat. If sponsors pay Linus enough than he can easily do these without cost.
That was honestly wonderful. Go back when he fills up the front of the store again for a before/after comparison.
Also, I nominate Keith get a 5000$ tech upgrade.
Definitely go back!
Needs a minimum of 20 USB-C to Lightning adapters, at least 5 4070ti, a dozen steam deck docks...
I’d watch an episode of pimp my tech store for sure
yesss followup vid would be very meaningful!
I'd advise against carrying so many items in the first place because it's very likely history will just repeat. Being featured on this channel will give him a boost, but that's temporary. There is just too much competition for a single shop with no price felixibility to move stock. The repair side is presumably how he's keeping the lights on. I'd carry limited amounts of essentials - essentials being the categories that have actually been selling in the store. We used to have tonnes of indie computer shops in my area. Most are long gone and the surviving mainly focus on selling refurb PCs that they also promote on Kijiji, Facebook, etc.
heart-warming, thank you for doing this, LLT.
This is very wholesome, I hope these items finds deserving owners
it's amazing he's stayed in business this long with the changing landscape, this opportunity probably means he will get to stay in the game for years to come. best of luck to him.
Yeah, when he opened this store there were dozens of different standards and trends that came and went that he either had to just keep whatever didn't sell on display and hope someone wanted it or thrown it away.
30 grand is probably his monthly rental costs.. the amount he paid for all thaty stuff new was pronanly 100 grand so yeah hes still not in a goodspot
@@thefacelessone74dude he would have never sold half of it so it’s really not that bad
It's kind of paradoxical. How did he stay in business this long only offering junk for sale? He's selling something though since he bought all this junk that never sells and somehow could afford it.
@@norezenable What people want changes all the time and ofc he sold products but when a product becomes outdated or people just stop buying then you will have some ''junk''
I used to frequent a mom and dad pc gaming cafe near my high school (late 90s). I became good friends with them and he'd invite some of us to stay after he closed shop for some free late night gaming sessions. When his wife was hospitalized, I offered to keep the shop open so they didn't miss out on some revenue (it was the summer break as well). I didn't ask to get paid or anything (obviously), but he insisted that I could grab anything from the kitchen since I would be running the place by myself and couldn't leave the place unattended. I ran the shop for a little over a week and didn't mind the 45-minute commute (per way). I was glad to have helped them in some way. The shop is still there but they're no longer hands-on with the day-to-day.
that is so wholesome i got teary-eyed

Sorry about that. The mom and pop thing is also unfamiliar to me and isn't really a term used in my country. I should have just said "family-run"

This is the stuff ai wanted to do when I was little. Just walk in the family owned shops and make someone’s day! Great video Linus, LTT crew, and Ridge!
I got teary eyed too. I had a computer store like that, with my twin brother for about 23 years (1993-2016), we started when we were 20 yo. We closed it and moved on but I still think about all those years. Thanks Linus for showing me all those stuff I grew up with.
Family friend of ours owned a PC shop, and I spent every day after school in it while my mom worked there. It's what got me into computers. First time I ever played Doom, Duke 3D, opened up a PC and changed a stick of RAM was in that shop. I miss that environment, that "this is where people go for a PC" feel. The guys that worked there and the boss (my mom's friend) were such great people. My first PC came from there.
So hey, shout out to you and your brother for possibly providing that same "we're for the little guy" experience to someone else.
You should do more of these. I felt this was a huge relief for this guy and I would love to see more people like this feel some relief, with a chance to start over using fresh inventory.

Huge respect for Linus and LTT for doing this. These kinds of stores are barely scraping by while still greeting our mom and pop with a smile and showing them endless patience as they do their best to guide them through the world of tech.
I used to want to open a local shop due to most shops anywhere around being similar to this. Then they all went out of business Except Basicslly the one really decent one. Basically I never even tried to follow that dream because it became really obvious especially once Amazon started 2 day shipping thay it would be very reasonable to try to be competitive or relevant. The markup required to maintain a store front in a regional setting just isnt really feasible. Some of these places have survived throughout the years but honestly I rarely see customers there and I've rarely found the parts I needed when I really couldn't wait on shipping or the prices were insane or they have random generic power supplies and cases... or 15 year old models. It's sad but they aren't going to throw away there old inventory that they paid for and most people who know tech aren't go I ng tk buy tech once a newer model os released in a year. If I go to a shop and they say they have to order a part i will just order it myself and they really can't stock everything someone may need because it'll wind up sitting on a shelf becoming outdated and worth less than they paid so its a hard line to walk.
@@toby3701 Omg you must be fun at parties mate.
@@toby3701 Clearly you've no idea how running a private business works... The companies that MAKE products don't use mom and pop shops as consignment.. The owner has to actually purchase those items and sell them at enough of a markup to make a profit. Big chains have (obviously) much larger purchasing / agreement power than mom and pop shops. Sometimes you hold on to stock because it's a literal loss if you toss it or mark it down too much.. They're hoping someone comes in with a need for an outdated product and will buy it. It's not incompetence, it's that the industry changes so quickly that small shops usually can't keep up.
Bro I think this shop is struggling for a good reason
I was holding my tears of joy at the end! I remember going into shops like this in my childhood, and we didn't notice hundreds of businesses like this one going out due to amazon and large electronic stores. Cheers to the grandpa in the video to hold on bravely all these years! ❤
This is why I don't shop at amazon. local stores, mom and pop shops, local restaurants - everyone is so obsessed with FAANG
Amazon and large electronic stores do not close down stores like this, consumers do.
@@kearneytaaffe7059Which is great until they charge exorbitant prices. The eczema cream I used to use was $7 on Amazon and $18 at the local pharmacy. I couldn't justify paying that even if it was supporting local business. It was way too much.
@@wolfspiderzx you gotta throw in the price of the shipping too, ik some items are shipping free but most of the time you can get better price in local stores
The problem is most shops llike this have stupidly high pricing = totally out of touch with what's available on Ebay =P If U R not going 2 stay 'modern' with your offerings U R much better off dumping the rest & focusing on 'retro gaming' like 'The Retro Gaming $hop' =) With complete $ystems 2 run MAME & the rest, or native 'Windows '98, XP, etc.' I have literally a dozen fancy Dell Precision T5810 'workstation' type 'graphics PCs' & still my main thing is a 'junk' HP (Asus board) PC running XP I got off the street. It could run other things but XP is better so that's what I use =) It's also very 'slow' by modern standards but fast enough 2 play 4K & whatever so who cares. If I want 2 C a 'game' (which is rarely the case, because movie effects look so much better) I can download it or stream it from JooToob LOL
