      Can you share a link to the vendor you purchased this scope from. This is exactly what I’m looking for. I really don’t like the double boom on the AmScope, but that appeared to be the only option…this looks great. Do you still like it today, or do you have buyer’s remorse? Thanks in advance!!

    Brilliant video. As a complete frustrated newbe to microscopy, this has been a massive help. I just received this kit today, but was deflated to find that the instruction manual is really quite inadequate, though I just about got there in the end. I never quite understand why companies skimp on creating decent manuals after the cost of developing and manufacturing. It's like stopping in a race just before the finish line. They even included a micro cd (as in your video), which I'm unable to use. Does a regular cd cost too much in plastic do you think? Great as this product ultimately is, engineers are almost always lousy communicators, who assume everyone else is an equal expert. No manual for the video camera that was shipped with it either :-[

    Thank you so much for this video and for your contribution to the electronic repair community.
    I only have one question that I have not found the answer to.
    How is it for a person using glasses to work through the eye pieces on this microscope?

    • @sdgelectronics
      @sdgelectronics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It works fine with my glasses on. You can adjust the diopter on each eyepiece so that you have full vision with your glasses 5mm from the eyepieces

    • @rblomarda
      @rblomarda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sdgelectronics I have worked with TMX, Phils (makers of Timex watches in the Philippines ('79 -'83) As a QC (Quality Control) Analyst I used most of the similar microscopes (American Optical) like this during my failure analysis work for the electronic and mechanical components of those watches and I was certain that you don't need to wear corrective glasses while using the scope. The procedure was is to focus the left eye with the fine adjust of the microscope head, then for the right eye, the RIGHT EYEPIECE can be adjusted or turned to match the focus on your RIGHT EYE. Now my question is, can the right eyepiece of the Eakin be adjusted for focusing Thanks for the answer.

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on your vision/correction. If you're only near/far sighted, then with adjustable diopters you might not even need to wear the glasses. But if you have astigmatism then you'll likely still need them; the diopter lenses can't correct for that. Do get a set of straight or shallow-angle rubber cups for the diopters though. Working without any is uncomfortable and will easily scuff up your glasses. The larger angled ones work well for blocking ambient light from the sides, but they conform to the outer edge of your eye socket and cheek, they don't work with glasses.

    I have a older am scope that I bought from an engineering firm that was closing up shop. It came on an articulating arm. This type of stand seems ideal for ergonomic reasons, great for not taking up so much bench space but I do see a downside, it seems to be picking-up every little movement and that can be disturbing when you're zoomed in. But I guess it's something you have to trade in for the ergonomics.

    • @sdgelectronics

      There's a bit more wobble visible on the camera, but for whatever reason you don't see it down the eye pieces. You're right though, at high zoom the effect is compounded.

    • @sdgelectronics

    I have used the AM scope with dual boom stand before and it was OK, but as you say it needs a good amount of desk space. • @sdgelectronics

      400mm is too ambitious for full zoom. It's about 250mm maximum. You'd need to change the barlow lens on the objective and sacrifice some of the zoom for working distance.

I've found a nice Eakins trinocular scope head, which shows the camera port as being 23mm diameter, but all of the camera adapters are bigger than that. Is 23mm accurate? As you adjust the continuously variable zoom, do you have to keep changing the height of the microscope head? (Working distance is inversely proportional to overall magnification?)

    • @sdgelectronics

      Just a minor adjustment to the focus is required. It doesn't require resetting the overall height - there is a focus rack which allows the fine adjustment

    Hi @
    SDG Electronics Great review. But I'm confused between the White Eakins Trinocular Head (as you show), and the Black Trinocular Head, which is available as an option in the 3rd link you provided. The White / Black heads appear physically quite different (ie. not just the color), and I note the Black one comes with a smaller 0.5x Mount Adapter, instead of the White versions SZMCTV 1/2 Lens Adapter for the camera (which you demonstrated). Are you able to comment on the difference between these White / Black Heads / why the different Adapters? Unfortunately this is not explained in the listing description, so I'm not sure which I should choose? Thanks.

      I've not found any difference in use with regards to the optics, but the black Eakins one has a better mount for the camera. Apparently the black version also has slightly different design which stops the smoke from soldering getting inside, though I can't verify that.

    Hello and thanks for these videos! Are you able to confirm the maximum table thickness this can clamp to? The listings on Aliexpress indicate 50mm but my concern is they may have measured between the gap in the black part of the clamp an not taken into account the thickness of the heads of the screws that clamp against the underside of the table when the screws are tightened. I need to know for sure because the lip of my desk is 50mm exactly.

      No it should work normally whether you wear glasses or no. Are you keeping your glasses on? Your eyes should normally be about 15mm from the lenses on the eyepieces. Regardless of your eyesight, adjusting the microscope height should always be able to bring it into any focus.

    I have a fixed 8x microscope and franky find 8x too much. (22mm field of view frustrates navigating solder + iron). But the 2.25x of my illuminated desk magnifier isn't quite enough. If you set the zoom to say 5x, are the eye pieces low enough to comfortably use or do you need a "high chair / low desk"?! (You'll have a large working distance - good - but also a lot of distance to the eye pieces - bad?)

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sdgelectronics I like the idea, but IMO the execution is terrible. If you actually wanna use it for moving it around fully and for swinging the microscope out of the way when not in use - then that tiny clearance underneath the bottom boom basically eats up all the bench space of its movement radius. You can't place anything there - anything taller than a table mat or a cable within it's radius, will be knocked over and swept off the bench.
      As you point out yourself in the video; bench space is prime, scarce real estate. And that bottom boom eats up almost as much bench real estate as the double boom stand does. It's arguably even worse than the double boom in this aspect, as except for the base of the double boom, at least there's good clearance _underneath_ the boom, and most of the space it eats up is towards the rear. This boom-arm eats up a lot more space more towards the front of the desk, space much more actively used.
