Evading multiple missiles in a sortie isn’t a terribly unusual occurrence. Look for the HUD video of the F-16 that dodged several Iraqi SAMs during the Gulf War. What the controller is doing reminds me of what civilian air traffic controllers are also trained to do during in-flight emergencies:
Provide helpful and relevant information, making sure not to hog the crew's attention. Don't demand feedback, whenever a question isn't answered, ask it again in a few moments time. Always think from the current moment, don't create action-chains where something is dependent on an earlier action that may have been missed or is no longer relevant.

80km engagement demonstrated the limits of this aircraft to approach air defenses. Semi stealthy aircraft can approach within 60km with external stores. Fully stealthy aircraft with internal stores can approach within 40km. Reducing those engagement ranges can potentially allow a safe flight path between air defense sites or getting closer to air defenses before releasing weapons load, increasing the penetration of such weapons into adversary controlled areas. Su-34 can approach closer than old aircraft such as Su-24, or Mig-31 that have been used in the conflict in Ukraine for ground strikes with long range missiles. But only by a modest additional distance.

In 1999. Serbian Air Defenses shoot down F117 and hit one more, they also shoot down one F16 and hit one more. Crews of S125 Neva that made those hits were asked about experience, they sad F16 was easier to find on radar but way harder to shoot down because pilots knew how to outmaneuver AA missiles, they also had anti-radar missiles witch made things even worse because crews of Neva had to turn of radars in 30 second window or get return fire, it takes 23 seconds for Neva missile to get to max distance, and there is to little time for second shoot and with old tech they had they could only guide one missile at the time on target. F117 were flying bricks, once it gets in missile range it is game over, they have no way to outmaneuver incoming missile. Anyway that is one of the things that Russia learned out of this war, prioritize maneuverability over stealth.

    • @Marcellogo
      @Marcellogo หลายเดือนก่อน +22

No, at such a distance the Active inboard radar is NOT for sure still activated and the missile is directed biy intermediate guidance correction sent by the main search antenna.
Original Patriots used a TVM guidance, a clever system not requiring a prior illumination with the CW of the target to launch so that it was the controller to forewarn the Su-34 of launch.
I didn't think it was a PAC-3 however as they were the small missiles (a pack of tour instead than the original single one) that are used for anti ballistic.-cruise missile interception

Yes. Especially at those ranges. Missile was detected at 40nm, which means it was fired well beyond that, at the limits of Patriot's range. Initially the aircraft was headed in the direction of the battery, which was optimal for the battery, despite the range, but the Su34 began maneuvering massively reducing the effectiveness of the missile, and eventually headed away from the battery making interception impossible. This is a good demonstration of how ineffective missiles can become when the target goes evasive or turns cold.

L band radar can detect stealth, basically it will get a return back but won't be able to give a precise position and calculate speed and direction easily. Yet this still can be resolved by launching a missile like the patriot does where it manouvers towards the target by using data link and inertial guidance going to the rough area where the L band radar sends and once it's close enough it switches to the onboard radar to track. Stealth aircraft are still visible from close distances.

Edit: What I mean is, the pilot performed general evasion techniques to beat the patriot missile(s). This applies to all kinds of SAM systems, not just patriot, and is incredibly unlikely to work 100% of the time. So while this video doesn’t necessarily diminish the very real threat that the patriot system poses for Russian aircraft, it does show a bit how difficult it is to avoid SAMs in general, specifically when you’re in a fighter bomber like the Su-34

the radar operator in the USSR or Russia guides the pilot to the area where the target is, then everything is up to the pilot. On the ground radar, the target and own aircraft are already so close to each other that the operator cannot distinguish the exact mutual position. The accuracy of surveillance radars in the distance is 1 degree in azimuth and approx. 200-400m in distance, it depends on the type of radar, frequency and other aspects. Therefore, the aircraft is not hindered by the ground operator in the area and already operates alone in the target area, the ground operator maximally provides it with information about distant targets, for example that other aircraft are approaching it or in this case Patriot missiles.

Patriot failed probably because the missile knew where it was instead of knowing where it was not, so not knowing where it was not means it knew where it was, and where it was minus where it was means it didn't know where it was because everywhere is where it was not.

Imo the person who’s life is on the line has the final say in with what happens. If the controller says go right, and it’s my life on the line and left looks like I can get more cover, I’m going left. I’ll let it be known to the controller, but it’s my life I’ll fight my way out of it the best I see. Props to the controller for just relaying useful info and making suggestions instead of micromanaging.

Pilots and commanders obtain information on weapon systems and how they work by various means. Knowing that patriot systems are operated by Ukraine of course Russia will search all over for info about the system and then work a plan to counter. In a video about the Falklands war a British sailor said the Argentine pilots knew how to approach and attack the ships avoiding the radar and missiles, another evidence that high command of any military can get their hands on good details about a weapon

@@du5707 The battery alone costs about $1bn and every missile about $4m.
Then there are some other costs to keep it operational.
So it's not just the cost of one missile alone. It's a expensive weapons platform.
It's not really cost effective. It wasn't designed to be cost effective in the first place.
One SU-34 costs about $36m. Then there are some other costs. So let's say $40m.
      So theoretically 10 missiles for 1 SU-34.
But most missiles are not shot at airplanes. In practice the are mostly used against missiles and drones.
Who cost much less. So looking purely at the cost of the system it's very expensive to buy and use compared to airplanes.
That doesn't mean it doesn't have a place on the battlefield.
The fear of the patriot missile system alone has value.
It makes the enemy more reluctant to use airplanes in the first place.
      So that's a win.

They created SU34 as side by side dual seat plane from SU27. It would be nice if they stretched it to have seating for four and sell it for VIP and commercial use! They could also dispense with thick titanium shell that protects pilots. Main downside is that engines were designed for military use and fuel consumption would be excessive.

The range was pretty long, the probability of a hit against an aware target would be low. However the launch did force the pilots to dump bombs and break off the attack. Which probably meant and aborted ground assault of an ammo dump or command position living to fight another day.
