@@Nickjustdabs These days it has a lot less weapons that the other aircraft it competes with. That puts it at a disadvantage. So not having to give up a hardpoint for a countermeasure pod is a very nice mod. For the counter missile roll that they are flying at the moment, more hardpoints would really help. It has the least of F15/18 and SU27/35 or any European fighter.

I guess the active countermeasure system that is installed on the Danish C-130 and I suspect also EH-101 (I noticed we have 82 systems, but fleet of F-16 + C-130 + EH-101 is less than 82) cna be tested but all the Danish F-16s have a recipient - either Ukraine, or Argentine. We are not keeping any once the F-35s are delivered, so testing F-16 exclusive components make little sense for RDAF.

The F-16 was always meant to be a multi-role all-weather fighter. It quickly morphed into a multi-role fighter - bomber, simply because it could. It has plenty of hard points. I am by no means an expert, but I was a USAF F-16 Crew Chief way back in 1980. The single engine made it comparatively inexpensive, the first fly by wire ... made it handle like a dream. The thing to remember is multi-role doesn't mean multi role on each sortie. It means it is capable of being set up for different roles according to each mission. It was never meant to be the best at any of them, but it did so good at so many of them, that everyone snaps them up, right up to today. It's a great airframe. Pound for pound the best jet, maybe ever. You used to get a 9 G pin when you flew in one and hit 9 G's, I have one. It may not win the war... but used right, it will put on a pretty good show, wait and see. And remember, if we are seeing it, it's because Russia and everyone else already knows about it.

Great technobable update on the pods. Clever development integrating weapons pylons with active electronics. Black box space is at a premium in military aircraft. I was a USMC avionics tech supporting A4E/F Skyhawks in the 1960s. Finding space to add ECM and missile warning systems was difficult. Back then avionics was not nearly as sophisticated but this was the tail end of vacuum tube (valves on the other side of the pond) era so gear was pretty bulky and power hungry.

We know Ukraine has IRIS-T Missiles for it's SAM systems and the F-16 MLU is capable of carrying those because the Norwegians used them.
It's the exact same missiles they just need a software update going from one to the other which is done in minutes.
SAAB makes chaff/flare dispensers that are built into the launch rails of air to air missiles. so with each Amraam or Sidewinder the jet carries you can also carry 120 flares.

    • @stephanvelines7006
      @stephanvelines7006 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

IRIS-T are very limited in availability currently, so there would be a conflict between SLS ground-based and air-launched versions.
Also even though an excellent missile, it has no data link (on the SLS and air-launched version at least) and has a small rocket motor. Therefore their range is limited, even compared to older AIM-120 AMRAAMs (think A/B and early C variants).
Given those limitations, AIM-9(X) would be the better option (specially for downing drones and cruise missiles in the rear of the country).

The TERMA Pod is a missile warning system designed for the F-16 fighter aircraft. It provides passive infrared detection and tracking of incoming missiles, giving the pilot advanced warning of potential threats.
The TERMA Pod's key features include:
    1. Passive infrared detection: No radiation is emitted, making it difficult for enemies to detect.
    2. 360-degree coverage: The pod provides complete spherical coverage around the aircraft.
    3. Advanced algorithms: Sophisticated software analyzes sensor data to detect and track missiles.
    4. High-speed processing: Rapid detection and tracking enable timely warnings.
    5. Integration with aircraft systems: The pod interfaces with the F-16's avionics and countermeasures systems.
The TERMA Pod enhances the F-16's survivability by:
    1. Providing early warning of missile threats
    2. Enabling timely deployment of countermeasures
    3. Increasing pilot situational awareness
This advanced missile warning system significantly improves the F-16's self-defense capabilities.

Way back in the mid 90s, I was doing some instructional work for the USAF and it became clear to me that the F16 that was in our inventory was VERY different than the EXPORT model sold to other countries. The version sold to Japan, for example, was different than ours and had some capabilities that exceeded ours. But that makes sense because each importing country has its own geographical and political situation to consider. After all, high-end engineering is a process of balancing numerous tradeoffs to render an optimal design.

At the same time we have ALOT of unpublicly donated sci-fi-ish pre-serial prototype modules some countries developed as and upgrade to their fleet but they did not go to mass production because of switch to F-35.

    Hi M7!
Yes ,Ukr. AF F-16AM got German-made AN/AAR-60 as UV not IR band MAWS , part of that PIDS+ pods. Very interestingly 'cause UV detectors have some advantages over IR detectors. One of the main advantages is that the UV detector has a longer detection/tracking range of incoming AAM/SAM which fly in the passive/inertion (after acceleration or rocket engine burn ) stage. From the tactical/technical point of view, it is very innovative for one 4 gen fighter. For comparison ,only RuA&SF operational fighter which has UV band MAWS is the Su-57 with that 101KS-U ( Ultraviolet) detectors ,two besides the cockpit for lateral angles and two blocks ,one under the fuselage ( below the cockpit) for lower front and rear hemisphere and another one on the upper side of the tail boom for upper front and rear hemisphere. What we can see at 5:30 are IRST/combat self-defence laser blocks known as 101KS-O ( Oborona or defence).
Both of them have MWIR band IRST sensor with generator of monopulse laser beam for blinding not only IR guided head of AAM ( during WVR aerial combat/dogfight) but for blinding laser proximity fuses of incoming AAM/SAM and for blinding all optics on enemy fighter during WVR combat ( IRST/LR block, HMD/JHMCS set etc). Another combat aircraft with UV-band MAWS in RuA&SF inventory is assault aircraft Su-25SM3 and Su-35S from the new series which got UV-band MAWS called 'Zakhvat' from the Su-25SM3! If we talk about real possibilities of that UV MAWS on PIDS+ pods against Russian AAM, it is very questionable because Russians have one very innovative solution against them with very simple 'color' detail on their new AAM like R-37M , R-77-1 and R-74(L, M and ML). Another detail about that ECIPS+ pods /AN/ALQ-162(V)6/ is that new Russian AAM ( R-37M and R-77-1 ) have dual-band radar seekers where Ku-band ( 12-18GHz) ARH mode and X-band( 8-12GHz) SARH mode can work either simultaneously or separately.
It is very hard ,practically impossible to jam a radar seeker when it works in dual-band mode at the same time. For me another technical detail is also very interesting ,it is the passive ( radio-goniometry ) antenna which we can see at 0:05 on the wing leading edge ( wing slat) . It is very similar to the passive radio-pelengation antenna of the RWR/ESM system SPO-32 Pastel ( L150-35) on the Su-35S . I suppose that it is capable of detecting/registering and processing radar signals sent from AESA radars like N036 Byelka on Su-57 which have very big frequency agility.

One reason why you don’t see many around, besides it being a Danish product for Danish f-16’s, it’s probably that they become significantly more expensive. And since pylons are still subject to ejection, it’d be an existing pylon to eject.
As for amraam B’s, that might be an export restriction. Not all weapons make it to all countries. Whereas many airframes may be exported to friendly nations, some of their ammunition may not.

So.. Blinding it (and I guess all other missile warning systems, since UV is the only spectrum they seem to be able to operate in?) would take a rangefinder, a UV laser with a lens allowing for targeting and another used to spread the beam according to target distance. And if you upgrade the laser to have a dot blacked out and accelerate the dots' movement across the beam diameter as it's simulating the missile coming closer, you might even manage to trigger the warning system. And if that is accurate, release flares or trigger other countermeasures it may be hooked up to.
