As someone who didn't pay much attention to Bioshock 2 at all, let alone the DLC, I am happy to have found out what it seems to have been all about. Seems like Minerva's Den could almost be a predecessor to the stories told in Soma, both in terms of setting and themes. Perhaps not as messed up as Soma's AI beings turned out to be, but I can deffo see a potential lineage there!
The idea of using art to reflect on yourself really resonates with me. Art helps me understand people, including myself. Sometimes the hardest part of understanding yourself is grappling with the fact that you have to work to do it. Analyzing something else can help you (well, can help me) get started down that path. Great video man, I appreciate the content you put out.

@Chicken Fingers I concur. Such a shame that it was heavily underappreciated by the people. I think one of the very intriguing things about Bio 2 is that side-plot about that guy (I forgot his name) who went into rapture at almost the same time as Delta's 'resurrection' to search for his daughter. You could even see him reunited with her as a rumbler in the end

I didn't forget. in fact, when I say "Bioshock Trilogy" I mean Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2, and Minerva's Den. Counting just those games (and maybe the ARG and some of the pre-Infinite tie-ins?) as part of the continuity is the only way that the term "Bioshock Trilogy" makes any sense. Infinite, by it's own admission, several times, is a spin-off that's not part of the same story as Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den.

I can 100% relate to working on a creative project and realising that you're actually using it to work through / describe your own personal experiences. I feel this has always led me to a deeper understanding of my own work and a better overall result. It's interesting to hear someone else's ideas on this topic.
I feel that feeling of confronting the depressive choices we made. Having to reflect and choosing what to do about it. Choosing the stability and, though you may not have said it, realizing you can still have an exciting time amd grow with it. (Your channel) I discovored you recently and I really enjoy your work that I've seen. I don't know who you were but it seems to me that you've grown quite well. Keep on growing my dude.
Holy shonks! This is some really personal and powerful stuff you’re sharing. Thank you for a profound glimpse into the struggles of your life. It is, one one level, very touching on it’s own, but, on another level, it also brings such a different - human - angle to your video essay which really gives it an absolute x-factor of value to me. This essay of yours is not just some rational analysis of mechanics or whatever and whatnot - which I truly am interested in as a note -, but something which will always leave the analysis completely completely pale in comparison to it: It is an honest rapport of your relation to a piece of art, how it has impacted you, and what it has revealed to you. That is in and of itself very artistic, to me, as it can be your viewers’/listeners’ gateway to doing the very same. On a completely different note, I also want to comment on your use of a phase theory of grief. To my knowledge, I am doing my Master’s in Psychology, the phase models of psychology have fallen heavily out of vogue from the 90’s till now, as they prescribe far too clearly distinct stages for the human experience: They have to be progressed through in a pretty linear fashion from start till end and boom - freed from sorrow. These days, it seems that the two-track model of oscillation between reconstruction of one’s life and dwelling with sorrow is liked more. It paints the picture of a truly uncharted journey in experiencing grief and sorrow, which at one point in time can shackle you to your home wallowing in despair, while you at another point in time may muster the will and energy to focus on what actually is in the here and now outside your mind and continue building a future for yourself. Even though it can be critisised as a quite individualised model of people in grief, not itself taking into account any concrete thing or person around and with the griever, it does seem to me to paint a more realistic picture of a person who does not just progress linearly, but rather wavers from despair to courage and back again several times before if ever “getting anywhere”. If you’re interested in reading more I have a link for the article: dspace.library.uu.nl/bitstream/handle/1874/384090/DUAL.pdf?sequence=1 Finally, I will say that I will wait in eager patience for you to finish your essay on Amused to Death, as that is an album I quite enjoy. Additionally, an association has sprung up in my mind. I can’t quite trace my association at the moment, but I thought of a very short but sweet song that I would lile to share with you: open.spotify.com/track/6K2LoDB7Fo2Uylg3yGHjSy?si=fDsEhq8rR_-SGGpvsx_LZQ Thank you for a great essay, and I’m looking forward to more!
Nice to see Bioshock content on TH-cam in 2020. Of course, the best thing in Minerva's Den is the awesome Ion Laser and the Gravity Well. Awesome video Mann.
Minerva's Den is easily my favorite single player experience of all time. The scene where the Personality replicator mimics Pearl makes me cry every time, even the part in this video brought tears to my eyes.
Watching this I noticed I forgot to play Minervas den and hearing that twist makes me regret not playing it AND regret watching this before going back to play it 😅
I always find your content really relatable, and it's so refreshing to hear someone take a realistic view on the world but not turn it into narcissism or misery. Maximum respect ✌
Ever since you made that coffee video I drink some coffee when I watch your videos because it left such a big impression on me it's like a little rich, love you!!!!
Currently im going through bargaining or depression, im not sure anymore; I will finish an animation that I have been working on for months in 2 weeks and honestly, I see no light at the end of the tunnel. I'm going to try my best to keep going, but I can't even imagine myself going any further without her it hurts so much, the only hope I have is that I will be able to take my life after posting the animation, because any other option results in unbearable pain or just restarting the cycle
@Sasha Lemay I think I will try to open up about this whole situation to my therapist this or next week, maybe there's something she can do to help, thank you
@@fumofromflorida Well, I guess it can be kind of an elaborate suicide note But it's true that if I will be able to go on that I will be able to create more and maybe even experience what love actually feels like
Minerva's Den is the best piece of DLC I've ever played. It may not have been the longest or the most expansive, but it added so much to the Bioshock world.
That last line hit home for me. I've been in your shoes before man, I know the horrible feeling of doing wrong to the one you love. It haunts me to this day. Nevertheless, great video, love your work
It's always such a pleasure to watch your content. There's just so much personality in it, it's unlike any other content creators that I've seen. You never give off the feeling of pseudo-intellectualism, you always sound so genuine, it's an absolutely incredible amount of passion that I wish I could have. Keep up the great work Leadhead.
The plot is amazing, really caught me, and it’s so fucking good to know more about the aspects of the Alfa series, it’s amazing know they aren’t totally accomplished to the suit like Bouncers and Rosies, still have an complete human being inside it, who likes we sees on 2, they still love, care, feels... that make us think how Delta would be, inside all that armor, that DLC give even more humanity to them, the Porter history is incredible and so well written that certainly put him as one of the best characters of bioshock even his games only having 8 hours of gameplay
You won me in an instant with the finishing methapor of this essay❗ It was brilliant ❗ I am proud to be your subscriber and I want you to know that your eloquence and intelligent interpretations made me question my self and my ways, so much so that it got me to a point where I managed to change for the better! For this, Leadhead sir, you have my undying loyalty ❤️
I don't have any words to say about this video. I'm not sure if I can even come up with any words about the DLC other than "I've never thought of it that way". I've been trying to contextualizing my grief into someone else's work as well. In my case, its the anime FLCL. I don't exactly know why, but I feel like the show just... gets me, ya know? This show has been helping me a lot over the past 8 months and the aftermath of a long and strong relationship I've had that recently ended badly and painfully for me. To be honest, Ive been trying to find anything to either give me insight on what happened or express how I feel, whether it be games, movies, tv shows, or even video essays here on TH-cam. Then I found your videos, most specifically one of your vids on Planescape: Torment. As much as I want to say that I'm finally over it now, that I don't care anymore about what happened, about him... I can't really shake the grief I still feel about it. Its still there, regardless of how I feel about it all. For all I know, it might never go away. I don't know what else to say other than retelling the same story I've been saying all over TH-cam about what happened between us, but what would be the point? It's not going to change what happened; things are over between us, he hates my guts and I'm most likely never going to speak to him ever again. But i just can't.... let go. Not yet, anyway. I just wish things didn't end this way. I wish things didn't end at all.
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. I really love this DLC. It's simple, short, had cool new weapons, and in my opinion, awesome plot twist. Great stuffs. I actually liked it better than Infinite, and that's saying a lot, because I quite liked infinite too
Okay man I need to say I can relate to you on the cheating on a loved one and feeling terrible about it. since it happened years ago I've started watching my actions and ensuring (to the extent I can) not to do something so hurtful again and it's made me (in my opinion at least) a more thoughtful person. idk, as bad of a thing it is to do, it's nice to hear that someone else has done something like that and has had a similar reaction to the realisation that they did something like it and want to better thamselves. shameful for both us, but it's helped us grow I think. (not comparing myself to you... or, I kind of am, but not in some "omg we're bros" kind of way)
if it's not obvious I agree with a lot of the other commenters who say your personal introspection in this video is what's drawn me to enjoy it more. melding video games and the human mind and emotional turmoil into a channel's subject matter is great and I look forward to watching more of your videos as I have been.
12:15 - This isn't true anymore, the crashes were fixed years ago. I recently replayed (and got 100% achievements) 1& 2 Remastered and Infinite, and I think I only crashed like three (?) times b/w 1 and 2. That said, it makes me incredibly sad that Spears in BS2R are messed up and don't work like they did in the original.
I appreciate the personal touch in your videos so much. When you started talking about your own negativity and it's relationship with the game, I couldn't stop thinking about a mistake that I made a long time ago and how I carry it with me every day still regardless of where I am and what I'm doing. When I realized that you also made the same mistake, I started to believe that one day I would be able to move past the shame and take ownership of what I've done, for better or worse. I never write comments like this, but you truly inspired me today.
Played all games again not long ago first bioshock then infinite, bioshock 2 , burial at sea and saved this dlc for last and oh boy I gotta admit this dlc fits so well to end everything it really does
I’m currently playing through the BioShock trilogy for the first time, and I’m about midway through BioShock Infinite. I must say, Minerva’s Den is the best BioShock experience besides the original.
Your videos are art, sad that there is such a little percentage of people that do the same kind of videos you do on this platform. I'm from Greece and, despite the fact most people on my age would find this boring or wouldn't even understand this, I understand and appreciate how beautiful your videos are.
I have no idea why but Bioshock 2 gave me memories I have never had, I'm not a father but it was the first time I've ever felt like one. For some reason the game felt deeply personal and emotional to me, more than the first or 3rd one or than any other game I've ever played in my entire life. Probably because I always felt sympathy for the big daddies and wondered what things were like for them. I still think that the first and 3rd bioshock are some of if not the best games ever made due to their immensely rich and completely unique environments, Rapture and Columbia as magical and dystopian they may be feel so real simply because of the detail and very believable struggles going on within them. Nothing has ever expressed all 4 political quadrants at their extremes in a more interesting way than the Bioshock series and it's proof that games should absolutely be allowed to be political in a way that is realistic. Sofia lamb showing the corruption and severe limitations on freedom "for the greater good" that easily takes place in an extremist authoritarian left society. Zachary hale Comstock showing how in an extremist authoritarian right wing society ruled by fascism tensions from decades of horrendous discrimination, slave wages etc will eventually boil over leading to a revolution. Daisy Fitzroy showing that extremist libertarian-left wing revolutionaries can often devolve into violence in the name of freedom and revenge for a cause that was good and of course Andrew Ryan, who shows us that in an extremist libertarian-right society human life is worth as much as it can be sold for and the selfish and truly evil, who don't feel sympathy for others (criminals/billionaries) will absolutely thrive and destroy everything below them leaving others to fight for the scraps (adam).
The plot twist at the end of Minerva's Den actually caught me off guard.
i remember playing for the first time all those years ago and my jaw dropped, my first game plot-twist
in my opinion, it rivals the first game

I discovored you recently and I really enjoy your work that I've seen.

Finally, I will say that I will wait in eager patience for you to finish your essay on Amused to Death, as that is an album I quite enjoy. Additionally, an association has sprung up in my mind. I can’t quite trace my association at the moment, but I thought of a very short but sweet song that I would lile to share with you: open.spotify.com/track/6K2LoDB7Fo2Uylg3yGHjSy?si=fDsEhq8rR_-SGGpvsx_LZQ
Thank you for a great essay, and I’m looking forward to more!
Nice to see Bioshock content on TH-cam in 2020.
Of course, the best thing in Minerva's Den is the awesome Ion Laser and the Gravity Well.
Awesome video Mann.
Minerva's Den is easily my favorite single player experience of all time. The scene where the Personality replicator mimics Pearl makes me cry every time, even the part in this video brought tears to my eyes.
the countdown at the beginning of your videos... ELITE TIER THANK YOU SO MUCH IT SHOULD BE AN INDUSTRY STANDARD
Watching this I noticed I forgot to play Minervas den and hearing that twist makes me regret not playing it AND regret watching this before going back to play it 😅
Lead's A fellow Civvie watcher chad.
That voice log of him testing the personality duplication function just....damn
LeadHead: *Uploads Video*
My Real Estate Studies: "Go ahead bro, I can wait."
that thumbnail looks really nice
really love how in depth these videos are
I always find your content really relatable, and it's so refreshing to hear someone take a realistic view on the world but not turn it into narcissism or misery. Maximum respect ✌
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THIS AMAZING DLC
Ever since you made that coffee video I drink some coffee when I watch your videos because it left such a big impression on me it's like a little rich, love you!!!!
Currently im going through bargaining or depression, im not sure anymore; I will finish an animation that I have been working on for months in 2 weeks and honestly, I see no light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm going to try my best to keep going, but I can't even imagine myself going any further without her
it hurts so much, the only hope I have is that I will be able to take my life after posting the animation, because any other option results in unbearable pain or just restarting the cycle
hey, don't give up, once you give up all the work you did will go to waste
@Sasha Lemay I think I will try to open up about this whole situation to my therapist this or next week, maybe there's something she can do to help, thank you
@@fumofromflorida Well, I guess it can be kind of an elaborate suicide note
But it's true that if I will be able to go on that I will be able to create more and maybe even experience what love actually feels like
Minerva's Den is the best piece of DLC I've ever played. It may not have been the longest or the most expansive, but it added so much to the Bioshock world.
Great video Lead, I’ll be waiting for the next surprise
14 year old me was blown away by this DLC, the ending and the twist hit like a car
That last line hit home for me. I've been in your shoes before man, I know the horrible feeling of doing wrong to the one you love. It haunts me to this day. Nevertheless, great video, love your work
Thanks for putting the timer in the beginning. You seem to be aware that some people don't care about fanservice.
You won me in an instant with the finishing methapor of this essay❗
It was brilliant ❗
I am proud to be your subscriber and I want you to know that your eloquence and intelligent interpretations made me question my self and my ways, so much so that it got me to a point where I managed to change for the better!
Nice video man, subbed
Your content is awesome, I hope you can continue exploring your passions
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. I really love this DLC. It's simple, short, had cool new weapons, and in my opinion, awesome plot twist. Great stuffs. I actually liked it better than Infinite, and that's saying a lot, because I quite liked infinite too
Fantastic video. Such a underrated channel.
Great work
I think this is one of my favourite videos from you even though h I am still quite new to your channel
Amazing video man and a great dlc I didn’t even know existed
Minervas den is probably the most consistently perfect bioshock experience there is honestly
i actually think Bioshock 2 is the best in the series. Best gameplay and best writing
The best Bioshock game yet
Keep up the great work dude
Mate, all your videos have such high quality and are just fucking sick. I really hope you get a whoooolee lot of views, you deserve them
Thank you. for sharing this with us.
Also, love the 2001 break down. Its 100% accurate.
You make me want to go back and play dishonored dlc and bioshocks dlc too.
In a world where too many things fall apart around me, I need this. That's all.
I wanted to say thank you for the videos they really are helping
Stuff like this takes courage to make
Played all games again not long ago first bioshock then infinite, bioshock 2 , burial at sea and saved this dlc for last and oh boy I gotta admit this dlc fits so well to end everything it really does
I really appreciate the patreon timer.
and the video, obviously.
I’m currently playing through the BioShock trilogy for the first time, and I’m about midway through BioShock Infinite. I must say, Minerva’s Den is the best BioShock experience besides the original.
Bioshock - Intellectual
Bioshock 2 - Emotional
Bioshock Infinite - Something in between
Your videos are art, sad that there is such a little percentage of people that do the same kind of videos you do on this platform.
Oh yeah drugs and alcohol. Same. Still smoke pot but that just makes the world alot less grey
Just found this channel and I’m in love.
It's so....odd. We examined Minerva's Den, and in turn, led to a reflection on your life and this channel. It's...intriguing. I love it :)
You should play and make a video on Spec Ops: The Line, id love to hear your thoughts on it
Keep it up dude! make the decitions that are good for u
love your videos
could u talk about “Everywhere At The End Of Time” by The Caretaker? It seems like a nice theme for an essay
Just found your channel and I really like what you've got to say. Thanks and best of luck to you :)
