Later in the 2000s I went on to work with Ford Service next to the then new Roush Research and Development facility. I grew up in Dearborn in the 80's & half my friends parents were Ford engineers or designers & we were all motor heads, & had mustangs of nearly every conceivable year & if Ford said it was ridiculous... Think in terms of 450-480HP ... not the mid 300's... I owned a 1990 GT with 225hp and with that GT's weight, it would take another 200+ hp for that car to ever feel "ridiculous"... Jack was most likely knocking on the door of HP that wouldnt be seen for a decade or more & it messed up Fords marketing plan?

I was a Chef at a rest here in metro Detroit area. Had a poster of the SA-10 Saleen in my office.
I was converting my GT to that car.
Server comes in kitchen and says "Steve Saleen wants to meet you."
Server told him of my poster.
I go out there, he is with another fella.
Chat a bit about the SA-10. Then Im asked what do you think of the 93 Cobra.
I was like bah, thumbs down 10 horse?, rims and a wing.
Then Steve with a smirk said, "well meet the designer of that car John Coletti ".

We took a tour of the Museum back in '05 and someone that worked there told us some info on the car. Can not confirm if the information is true or not, so believe what you want. We were told it was developed as a prototype for a '93 Cobra. The 351 NA didn't make enough to suit Ford to carry the Cobra name. Twin Turbos were added and now it made close to 700hp (crank) and Ford said it made too much. Roush de-tuned it to just under 500hp, but by that time Ford decided to go a different route of track oriented instead of straight line performance. We were later told that the guy giving the tour was Jack's Son-in-Law. But 1 of the rarest cars he showed us was a '67 Mercury Couger Eliminator w/a Boss 429.

Evan, I am SO STOKED that you did a video on this car, and that it's still alive and well in the Roush Collection!! It is definitely not an '89, I can promise you that. I was living/working in Michigan in 1987, between May and December. Every morning I'd make my daily commute from Royal Oak to Livonia, where our NPD location was literally right down the road, deeper within the industrial area, from Roush's facility (across the street from the Ford transmission plant). On more than one occassion (3 or 4 actually), Roush developers, or hell it might have been Jack himself, were out on Amrhein Road absolutely TEARING it up.. And that car was the fastest thing I'd ever seen on the street. Came around me one morning when I wasn't paying attention, full-throttle 2-lane pass. Anyhow, that was in mid-1987. And yep, the car was just "too wild" (and probably too expensive to build) for production. Rick Schmidt, NPD

This car was awesome no doubt about it, but it did not have to be a twin turbo 351. It could have been a completely stock 5.0L HO with an intercooled single turbo. That combination would have been a little easier to package, and more importantly, a little more palatable to Ford. Even back then 350HP would have been attainable with a single turbo. Even at 300HP the torque a stock engine would have made with a single turbo would have made it a monster for that era. It would have packaged well with a T-5 and 3.08 gears and nothing else. What killed this project was the nightmares for Engineers had about dealership service departments pilled to the ceiling with obliterated clutches and T-5 graveyards for as far as the eye could see. What I would have given to rolled up along side a Grand National in a black GT with a factory installed, turbocharged 5.0L and let him go a little ways, then walk him down without speed shifting.

    • @chadbornholdt9257
      @chadbornholdt9257 3 ปีที่แล้ว

EXACTLY! Ford would not spend that kind of money. They threw a turbo on the 2.3 & people bought it & it now has a cult following. They should have just done the same exact thing with the existing 5.0 (probably even the same exact turbo), nothing but a turbo! (And let the money roll in.)

Ford always seemed to miss the boat on some of these offerings. Just like now, they push the price points up by squeezing the Bullet in between the GT and the GT500. Why not offer a twin turbo (turbos off of the ecoboost lineup) in a stripped down fully forged coyote), and call it a LX, that could go against the 392 Hemi Challengers ? Sell it for $40k with a T56/magnum or 10 spd. Keep the marketing people out of it and allow true ala cart options without being stuck in a $7000 upgrade just to get the better braking, and a 19" wheel.
Also has Jack put a twin turbo on a a current Gen Coyote ? Just curious as to the power. Thanks

It has vert/ttop style mirrors on it that is really cool. The lower grill was much wider I assume to feed more air to the intercooler man this thing was waaayyy ahead of its time. This thing would have been a torque monster and a modders dream. You could throw a cowl hood on it with a taller better flowing intake (I imagine there may have been aftermarket versions of this dual intake setup had it seen production) and up the boost or do turbo swap and you could have ungodly power. Even the stock power would have been mind blowing at that time. Way way ahead of its time much like the Calloway vettes but they weren't really production vehicles per se. They were modified after the fact like saleen mustangs etc. I guess this roush would have been similar in that regaurd. these are very cool. The black cheese graders made the tails look tinted which gives them a modern style and it does look like the 93 cobra got alot of styling from this car. The black cheese graders were kind of like the black saleen tails in the sn95 era but this was well before that. Super cool innovative car and it's a shame it never seen production shame on you ford.

Twin chargers on a bone stock 351 is deep into 550bhp at 7 psi. I believe you are way way off on what kinda number that package was capable of, even not intercooled. I mean the Buick Gn was what 285 on a super small single and about 125 less cubic inches an 2 less jugs

From what I can gather, there's a multitude of reasons it never made it
One was Ford crying too powerful (wussies!)
Two was the T5 would just shatter (They planned to use a T56 but they weren't available yet when they built this car)
Three was apparently even with all of SVO's tricks, the chassis couldn't handle it. I'm not so sure about that- the car doesn't have subframe connectors, no strut braces, nothing that I could see when I looked it over today.
The last two points were stated by Mark Kovalsky in an article for Mustang Source.
I'm kinda wondering why they didn't just use a single turbo and meet Ford in the middle.

Sweet secret concept. Hey Evan you should get a feature on Racin Jason's ragtop before it goes missing. I'd love to see that again, last time must have been mid 90's J&P Performance shootout. It would be a great history video for any younger folks

Pretty sure I saw & heard that car in Yucca, Az at proving grounds headed for the track. Does it have straight exhaust no mufflers?
They would not let me look underhood and all they would say was twin turbo & it was fast.
If this car was never in Yucca then there was a twin. They gave us a ride in a 15 passenger van that pulled like freight train with 15 people on it 110+ mph. Again wouldn’t let me see engine but hints were a v-10 with turbos or supercharger. Got the full tour that day!

I bet that’s a wild ride.. 351w twin turbo fox with a few mods I’m sure 500hp is there.. I would bet it’s high 11-low 12 second factory car in 1989.. I guess ford didn’t want to be showed up by roush back then.. but that would of been the fastest American made vehicle until the 04 terminator

I think Jack missed the point in his build. If he wanted the Ford engineers on the hook, the tune brief should have been "car to leave hard off the line, minimal wheelspin, extreme mid range, great fuel economy, smoke the competition" Ford puts it into production and when we get it, the brief goes out the window. Pretty much what Ford Australia did with the barra turbo platform.

this shit would’ve and should’ve actually changed the car world forever. this thing was near the ferrari f40 power wise, aka the most powerful factory car from the 80s. im genuinely pissed as a foxbody fan that ford and roush didn’t release this to the public.
edit: forgot to mention that 400 hp from factory in the 80s in a non supercar did not exist at all. and also remember it wasn’t til 2003 that ford introduced a forced induction car from factory, so if they would’ve released a forced induction mustang in the 80s. man what couldve been….

Did he say a truck 351 with twin turbos is only pushing around 400 hp? Maybe with a single turbo with low boost but not twin turbo. Probly closer to 500-600.
