Toyota is really built to last. My tundra is 20 years now, my fj is 12years, now i had a 2023 4runner of road premium. These are all for keeps. Loved the videos, thanks guys. Awesome adventures.
I have mixed feeling here... Is it really how you 'off road' or is it just beating the crap out of your truck? I feel like you should avoid scraping, bounching and slapping chassis. But either way, that's some cool terrain, trails and lines!
I know these 4runners are solid, but these videos definitely convinced me to order a new runner vs a 'slightly' used ones. Lol. Besides, with the crazy used car market, a new one without dealer markup are cheaper than used ones with 50k miles. Have a 22 ORP w KDSS on order now. Hopefully will get delivered by late Jan/early Feb.
You rock Jim! No pun intended. Wish I could get out on the trail more. These T4R off roads are capable beyond most people's capacity to drive them. Awesome year!
I have really enjoyed your videos. A few months ago, I bought a very clean, low mileage 2018 4Runner TRD OFF ROAD PREMIUM. I've owned a couple of other Toyota 4X4s in the past. I found them both (1968 FJ40 & 1986 pick up) to be very tough, capable off roaders. So far, I've found the 4Runner as capable, if not more so, as the other Toyotas I've owned. I really like it. I've been off roading for 50+ years and have owned most any 4X4 you can think of. This 4Runner I rate as the 'overall' best one. Some others have been marginally better in one respect or another. But, the 4Runner does everything very well. From daily driver to highway travel to mild and hard 4X4 trails, it's great. I put an Eibach three inch leveling lift on it for better ground clearance and that's made a big difference. I have several more projects in mind for it. I believe the first one will be some good rock sliders. Anyway, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content.

How has the alignment and steering rack pinion held up? I prefer older/dumber solid front axles and steering boxes over IFS and rack&pinion. However it looks like Toyota might built a front end half decent and tough enough to make me consider a 4Runner. I grew up in the coal mines of Virginia and my family beat the font ends off IFS trucks all the time. Later in life I traveled a little bit and got to see what Afghanistan "roads" did to most IFS vehicles. Best part was listening to my coworker complaining about having to constantly to alignments on his Ford Raptor everytime he hit a pothole while back stateside. However if you've been sending that 4Runner down the trails like this for about 110,000 miles over 4 years then you probably found where the weak spots if any. The 5th gen 4Runner is at the top of my list for purchase here in the next few months.
I’m at 136k now probably 3-4 alignments. Seam to hold pretty good even though the alignment retaining tabs are broken off. Goes straight as an arrow and tires wear pretty flat. Weak spot is control arm bushings. They don’t completely fail just get soft and have too much play. They start clunking, I’m on my third set. The rest of the front end is original. You are right my 17 ram dually has solid front axle. Grated it doesn’t go off road much but it has 200k all original front end even the shocks! I have really beat the 4Runner. Pretty much every repair was because of how I use it. Lots of seals fail from mud and sand. With normal use I think it’s one of the most reliable vehicles you can buy. I’m also super impressed by my Ram/Cummins. It hauls heavy 100% of the time for my business and doesn’t quit. If your looking for a good rig I’d recommend either one.

Thanks so much. To be honest I don’t use the gadgets that much anymore. Mostly 4 low and turn on Atrac and the rear lockers on rock climbs. I played with them when I first got the truck and didn’t notice much difference. The MTS is basically controlling the amounts of wheel spin. Less on rock and more in mud. They all kick off around 7mph.
