    When I was young, I was never really impressed by ''The Omen'', but when I got older, and saw it again, including the two sequels, nowadays I think ''The Omen'', ''Damien:The Omen II'' and ''The Omen:Final Conflict'' is one of the best Horror trilogies ever made. The third one is not as great, as the sequel, but it has some striking images, and Sam Neill is perfect as the older Damien.

    • @scyphe
      @scyphe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree that Sam Neill is perfect as Damien in the last Omen movie in the trilogy. I do like the third one more than the previous two for some reason. I guess it's the actors and their characters (esp. Sam Neill as Damien) in the Final Conflict that made me feel that way since I felt that the boy playing Damien didn't have that much to say or do except stare at his perceived enemies, telling his story through events and the rest of the cast while he was a bit stiff. But this one's got a really good atmosphere for a 1975 horror movie.

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yeah, my thoughts were similar, i was not bowled over at first, but over time, i came to think the first one was brilliant, second was very good, and the third was somewhat less.
      i agree that sam neil is fantastic in the role....but i always felt that three could have been a lot better.
      Generally i believe the Omen trilogy is really really great, intelligent horror.

    I've always loved that scene where he just knows all the dates -- basically an indication of who and what he is. Damien has a lot more dimension in this movie, rather than being out and out evil from the get go. He's kind of a reluctant antichrist at first, and that's dramatically interesting.

    Damian has jackal's blood because he was birthed by a jackal (and then swapped out with another baby at the hospital in Rome in the first movie).
    The reason Joan says "I don't...know" suddenly is because she realizes she hasn't confirmed Damien is the child on Yigael's wall, because the face of the anti-christ on the wall changes as the anti-christ ages, so she needed to see Damien in the flesh to be sure.

    Notice this in the first scene with Damien. He's walking through a structure that is kind of like a hallway. You hear Mark blow his trumpet and he shouts "Damien!" Then you see Damien come toward the camera, shrouded in the fire that the gardener created to burn leaves. I've always thought that these elements show Damien as a ruler type with music and an element of nature. The imagery provokes ideas of greatness and power.

      This was one of many shots from the original director Mike Hodges. Producer Harvey Bernhard really grew frustrated with Mike's directorial style as he took a very long time to set up his shots under a very tight schedule from Fox. The two reportedly got on so badly that Hodges allegedly was threatened with a gun by Bernhard over creative differences and left the project after 2 weeks in production. Had Hodges stayed on and with more creative control, I felt he would have given us many distinctive scenes of imagery with much depth.

    My favorite moment came right at the outset: Tom increased his score for "The Omen"! Some notes: The reason Joan Hart suddenly says "I'm not sure" after her "you're all in danger" rant is because she's only seen Yigal's Wall, she hasn't actually ever seen Damien in person, which is why she goes to football game, and why she freaks out when he removes his helmet. Ann's favorite art piece is The Whore Of Babylon, whom The Beast "consumes with fire" as she herself is at the climax. Don Taylor replaced Mike Hodges on the film. I met Elizabeth Shepard a couple years ago, and she said that Hodges wanted to build the suspense more. Her death scene was a little more expansive originally, where there was a farmhouse in the distance that she was trying to get to before being attacked by the Raven. It had a longer build up. Apparently the producer did not like what he was doing and wanted them to "get to the kills" more quickly. The producer also hated her red coat. and you'll notice that she and Atherton, the man who dies in the ice, are both wearing red before they die. Aunt Marion's reading a red bible and the elevator doctor has a red tie. Not much remains of Hodges work on the film, but Damien's entrance seen through fire was his. It may have been a very different film, it's pace more like the original had Hodges not been replaced. But it's a slick, fun little ride. Goldsmith score, especially the opening, is bouncy and more energetic like an adolescent, and in "The Final Conflict" is more adult and majestic. It's a terrific trilogy, and it's nice to see your reactions and that it still works, if not to the horrific level it did in the 70's. The books are great as well, and after "The Final Conflict" there were two additional books, "Armegeddon 2000" and "The Abomination", the first of which had a script set to be filmed, but the waning interest in devil movies in the '80s, and the rise in popularity of the slasher film, put a kabosh on the plans. You Brits had a fantastic quad poster after the final film that advertised "the deaths so far..." and had little pictures of everyone that died in the films. Looking forward to your review of "The Final Conflict". Sorry this was so long

    So... you finally got around to seeing my favourite Omen movie. About bloody time. Ever since reaction videos became a thing I've been waiting for someone to do Damien: Omen II. I prefer the story of Damien coming to terms with his destiny. I mean he goes so far as killing his cousin who may as well be his brother (as blatantly suggested in the dialogue). It's kind of Biblical that part I think, or is that just the music making two boys standing in the woods epic? Whatever. Just love it.

    I love this sequel almost as much as the original, though the deaths were practically telegraphed ahead of time (just like you predicted the lake death with the cake, etc). The story of Damien is very compelling, though, especially how much he loved and wanted to have Mark by his side and was anguished to have to kill him, leading to him to fully accept his role as antichrist. Yes, any lake with rivers that leads into and out of the lakes will create a current. Even in the small lake where I am from, you can see the differences inflowing near the shallow part. Some canoe rowers will use these currents to help them start and move faster in the water.

Even the composer of the two Hellraiser films you were choiring the titles to the other day adored Goldsmith's work on Final Conflict.

    Just a little nugget of information for Shaun regarding one of his quibbles: many recreational lakes in the US are created by damming streams; there is a slow flow regulated by the dam, not enough to prevent freezing over if the weather is cold enough, but enough to make it dangerous if you fall through and can't find your way back to the hole. In winter in the northern US and Canada ice fishing--through a hole created in the frozen surface--is a popular sport, but people do sometimes drown if they miscalculate the thickness and strength of the ice.

    Composer Jerry Goldsmith (who won an Academy Award for best original score for the first Omen movie) in some ways exceeded the first. Primarily, I think, because Goldsmith was very progressive in embracing traditional orchestral music and combining it with very unusual instruments, synthesizer and odd mixed meters. He was constantly experimenting. He was a cut above the rest.

    The first one, directed by the great Richard Donner, did the film in a way that it could either be a really bad day for Damien's father, or he truly is the son of the Devil. The dichotomy of the film makes it a great movie. But since we now know he's the son of the Devil, you can't do that same dichotomy again. Damien IS the son of the Devil, and it's a fun movie (definitely up'd the gore factor), but I think the original is still superior.
