  • The Omen is one of the few horror series where the main character grows as the movies go along. It's an all-time classic, and Damien: Omen 2 is a popular and worthy follow-up, but why is The Final Conflict so rarely discussed? The film's cast, story, and flow fit in perfectly even when the film itself is kinda forgotten to time. Join us as we take a look at what is actually the perfect way to end a solid and underrated trilogy of horror films.

    I love the small detail that, when he comes back after the foxhound, Damien smears the face of Peter with his glove that he filled with the blood of the martyred priest. He literally anointed his future servant with a blood sacrifice from a holy man.

    Even though Damien was played by three different actors, we have to agree that each of them were PERFECTLY cast and not once was the audience turned off by the recasting. It was a natural progression.

      It's like the role of Tommy Jarvis from the Friday the 13th series. A trio of films (Parts 4-6) there had the role played by three different actors and that seemed to be a natural progression in age and mentality each played off wonderfully in their own right. Another example would be John Connor from the Terminator series. Actual movie qualities aside, no one really gives flack on the four main actors who played John (or five including the Terminator TV series), though Nick Stahl (John #2 in T3) has been criticized a bit, I didn't mind him for the most part.

    No mention of the score? It's absolutely spectacular. Jerry Goldsmith might have won an Oscar for the first Omen (his only Academy Award, which is kind of a travesty) but it feels like this is the one he REALLY threw himself into.

      The actings was amazing, the scenery was stunning, the details the decor was beautiful. All the costumes pressed to perfection without one wrinkle in them. The camera work was perfection again yet these films don't really get talked about much. The three of these films frightend the life out of me as a young teenager. Just watched the final conflict today and I still see it as a stunning film in every department.

    The Omen III is a masterpiece just like the first and second films and the cinematography is simply stunning. All the costumes were perfectly ironed lol, I kid you not, this director was obsessed with how his actors looked on set and the costumes were pressed to perfect without one spot or wrinkle in any of the actors clothes. Scenery was simply stunning, the actings was perfection and the story was never boring for one second. Why can't they make films like this anymore. The Exorcist had the very same atributes as The Omen but you just won't get that in films now days. These are some of the best films every made in my book and I'd like to see that style of film made again. The houses, mansions were spotless inside and outside and the film fly's by at a fast pace, it's never boring even though it is and hour and 40 plus minutes. I think the ending was the perfect way to end the franchise which saw three very clever well made films in a row. This franchise is the best I've ever seen as every film was perfection in my view.

    There was in the sequence of novels an Omen IV & V that followed on from the plot of the films (but totally unrelated to the film the 90's made for TV version). It was a long time ago since I read them but I remember enjoying them. It used the mentioned plot point that using just one Dagger would just kill his body, all of them had to be used to destroy the soul and he's subsequently reborn. His mortal conception followed on from how Damien & Kate were "intimate" in Omen III. (I must have been a bit naïve when I first saw Omen III, as his reason for flipping her over didn't click till it was pointed out in the novelisation),.

      The scene is a twisted parallel to the last temptation of Jesus Christ: what if had let himself fall in carnal love with Mary Magdalene? The whole subplot of Damien with Kate and Peter is reminiscent of Damien trying to explore what it'd be to be a family man, a husband, a lover, and a father. Damien is at first making love to Kate, like an ordinary man would, but when he gets that he cannot go on that path, he turns violent on her and rapes her anally.

    The Omen franchise is underrated. As far as Omen IV, I remember it being released as part of a box set with all 4 films, but you couldn’t buy it separately until many years down the road. Thoughts on The Omen remake with Julia Styles?

      The remake is pointless...waste of time although not as bad as the little known (for good reason) remake of Rosemary's Baby with Zoe Saldana as Rosemary.

    Thank you for giving this movie a VERY POSITIVE review.
    The Omen trilogy is the strongest horror, with each film giving its own contribution and worthy. All 3 actors have nailed the role as Damien.
    This is how I first saw 'Sam Neil' playing 'Damien Thorn'. Then 'Riley ace of Spies.''
    'In the Mouth of Madness' and 'Event Horizon' are great movies. Sam Neil is a superb actor.
    Have the soundtrack. I adore horror scores.

    Always felt this one was a let-down. I like Sam Neil but always felt he wasn't sure just how to play an adult Damien and went for over-acting on some scenes, which took away my enjoyment. In the first film Damien was just a child, so the evil had to come from around him which kept the character mysterious and foreboding for the future. In the second film he was coming into his own, with adolescence and coming of age in realizing his destiny. That was a decent journey. However, with the third film the mystery and foreboding are pretty much over as he's an adult and now has to ring in the apocalypse. That's difficult to pull off no matter who wrote the script without looking like a moustache-twirling evil villain, who can become quite one-dimensional. I always felt Sam didn't quite pull it off and so the movie always left me unfulfilled.

    FANTASTIC score by Jerry Goldsmith. He really outdid himself with the last entry. Of course the scores to "The Omen" and "Damien: Omen II" are awesome(I tend to favor the score to the 2nd entry the most). The orchstrations by Arthur Morton, the conducting by Lionel Newman and the performance by The National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus on all 3 films are beyond excellent.

    Nice review. Agree it's an underrated movie but let's not get carried away. The first half is well on par with the first two movies but in the last 30 mins, it really loses its momentum and fissles out to an unsatisfactory ending. Sam Neill is brilliant though. Peter and Susan are the weak points.

    • @devontehuntley6274
      @devontehuntley6274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It doesn't tie up the trilogy nicely. Damien never really rises to power and fulfills a thing in Revelation. He's suppose to be the Antichrist and yet he never rises to power and claim the title. There needed to be another movie or two afterwards showing this and then we have the second coming of Christ. This movie just rushes through everything and leave so much of his intended arc out.

    • @Foebane72
      @Foebane72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devontehuntley6274 Good point, but I think Hollywood would never permit the Antichrist to come fully into power, but be thwarted by another divine event, that of the second coming of Christ. The first two movies had no indication of a second coming of Christ whatsoever, but to be honest, I don't know what behind-the-scenes events were going on to suddenly force this upon the series. It's like the filmmakers simply didn't want to piss off religious people.

    • @devontehuntley6274
      @devontehuntley6274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Foebane72 The second coming of Christ is something very heavily taught in the Bible though and the first two movies SHOULD have mentioned it, but it would of course be brought up here in the third because Damien is an adult and closer to his reign. Things like the daggers made no sense because Damien is meant to rule. We see his face plastered on walls like he's the IT antichrist, yet he's defeated and doesn't accomplish anything as "Damien", but able to take another form like Alexander York in Part 4 and probably able to accomplish things in that lifetime, which doesn't add up. I also don't get the whole Christ reborn thing because that storyline was left hanging. Was he truly reborn as a baby or no because all the babies born Damien suspected was such all get killed by the end so where is this Christ child? Also, the Bible never teaches he'd come back as a baby again. The makers kind of did piss off religious people because they didn't really follow exactly what the book of Revelations teaches about the end times and the antichrist's rule and cut things out and short tremendously.

    It would have been interesting to see what Damien would have done in his “Lad” years, so in between Omen 2 and Omen 3, as this is the most unpredictable time in a young man’s life in terms of behaviour, hormones etc.

    I saw all these on their cinema releases, and remember thinking the ending was kind of a let down.
    This because in the first movie it's established that the 7 daggers need to be all used; the first one to the heart, followed by the others, shaping a cross.
    Then...only one could do the job. Also, I thought it was kind-a corny showing Jesus like that.
    Nevertheless, I enjoyed it; a legendary antichrist trilogy.

  • @justicierodelaliga

    I do like this movie. And I find it interesting how they focused on a different stage in Damien´s life. If anything, the way he dies does not make sense by the rules they established.
    I don´t understand how the sequels (and this one in particular) weren´t better received.
    PS
    I did some search and 2 books were written that continue the story. So, it seems, that the reason why the sex was so rough with the reporter is because he... did not do it the "proper" way with a woman. And, still, she got pregnant; and...believe it or not, it can happen in EXTREME rare ocassions in real life. So that´s the story of the fourth book. The fifth deals with Damien´s daughter. And no, it isn´t the story of the direct to TV movie. The books were written either after that was done or prior. Don´t remember. A shame they did not get to finish the proper story. Because it makes sense since to properly kill Damien the 7 daggers were needed.
    I also seem to recall that the first 3 books are based on the movies.

    This movie was sort of lackluster. I don't mind seeing Damien as an adult and liked they aged him even if it did mess up the timeline a bit. The sequel already did that pushing the first movie back to the 1960s and this one pushes them both back to the 1950s! Plot points aren't clear or just sloppy: Jesus Christ is apparently reborn but that isn't quite clear since the last remaining baby that's supposedly the chosen one, that of Damien's assistant Harvey and his wife Barbara, ends up dead when Barbara burns him with an iron, and then the end scene where Damien is killed with one dagger and the whole world is suddenly at peace given all the Bible scripture display telling us so? Um, Damien didn't fulfill a damn thing in Revelation for that to even happen so that didn't make much sense nor was all seven daggers used on him. The continuity between this and the others was pretty lacking. I get this is twenty years later so the events of those movies aren't gonna be brought up like that but this was pretty stand-alone. Nothing is said about the aftermath of the second movie other than the daggers being found at the Thorn Museum, but who took care of Damien after his aunt and uncle died? That's not addressed. I would have loved to have seen Carl Bugenhagen pop up. The character appeared in the first two, so it's only fitting he appeared here too besides just being mentioned. Yes, he died in the sequel, but they could have shown him in a flashback to maybe before the events of the first movie where we see him and younger Father De Carlo together talking about the coming Antichrist. De Carlo knew Bugenhagen and we would have saw them together at one point and this further develops De Carlo's arc as he was apparently around the whole time watching Damien's rise to power since the events of the first movie, yet he's not brought up until this movie. So yeah, this sequel needed some more fine tuning and better development with characters, story-points, continuity, and action sequences. Even with the touch ups, I don't think it should have been the end since we're just now seeing him as an adult and getting closure to his destiny. We had two movies as him as a kid, to it's only fair we had at most two of him as an adult. Omen III should have set up Damien taking over the world and then Omen IV is about him fulfilling Revelation and we could find out more of his life between Parts 2 and 3. Then we end where Christ comes back and there's the battle of Armageddon and whatever else the end times teaches will happen. The version we have is far from being a crispy and clear conclusion you point out at 1:12. We see Damien die, but the execution of it was poor and not even conclusive as he was only killed by one dagger, so his spirit would live on to reincarnate as Omen IV showed us hence that movie's existence.

    I have to wonder... If in this movie, they have Damien the President or President elect, the most popular ever, and made him psychologically break down by tragedy - Could he have narratively broken down and abandoned God, started wars out of spite and bitterness, and hurt the masses intentionally and fulfilled the prophecy without the stereotypical bad-guy role? I feel like that would've been a much more compelling character arc. Unfortunately I don't think many writers thought like that back in the day this was made.

    The Omen The Final Conflict. IMHO it's a waste of a great cast it should've been made into two films where we do get to see Damiens power over the world and the monks struggle with their task to assassinate the Antichrist. The Damien series also missed this opportunity.
