    Studios have never known what to do with Clive Barker. They’re okay with the violence but are terrified of the overt sexuality and eroticism. But it’s the combo that makes his stuff so freaky and twisted.

    My favorite scene, but also the funniest, is when Pinhead stops the cenobites form getting Tiffany. The greatest line of the series, for me, is when he says "It is not hands that summon us. It is desire." But this scene also cracks me up because when he says "No" before this line, it sounds like a Schwarzenegger impression and now that's all I hear when Pinhead speaks.

  • @HirXeBomb
    @HirXeBomb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Pinhead even hinted Kirsty that her dad is in a different hell. That was also a hint to the audience to know that it wasn't her dad that wrote in blood.
    Also a fun fact:
    When Clive Barker adapted the novella into the 1987 film Hellraiser, he referred to the character in early drafts as "the Priest" but the final film gave no name. The production and make-up crew nicknamed the character "Pinhead" derived from his bald head studded with nails and fans accepted the sobriquet. Thus in Hellbound: Hellraiser II and future movies, the cenobite "the Priest" was credited as Pinhead.

  • @Clueless_Morgan

    I love the first Hellraiser. But Hellraiser 2 is almost a masterpiece... only thing negative is how easily Charnard defeats Pinhead & Co. The rest is just beautiful twisted sexual gore... love it.

    • @nikfabbi87
      @nikfabbi87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It was not just Dr. Channard defeating them as a regular cenobite. It was Leviathan through him who did it, and he was the powerful Lord of Hell; it decided to do it from the moment Pinhead and co. remembered their humanity and allowed the girls to flee... They could just buy time, but no more than that.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The first half is great, apart from the overlong flashback. I like all the nasty business at Channard's house. In the second half, I love seeing the hell dimension, but the plotting feels messy, and I don't like how the original cenobites are weak and easily killed.

    I met Nicholas Vince, along with Grace Kirby - female Cenobite - at several conventions, and the guy is an absolute gentleman, taking the time answer any questions, even when he's clearly answered them a hundred times already. I love seeing encouragement like this toward TH-camrs and fans. Grace Kirby actually recommended several TH-cam channels that I should watch for reactions, and not just to Hellraiser. Even 30 + years later, these guys still understand and appreciate the impact that film had and continues to have.
    In mid-2019, I finally met Doug Bradley himself, and for the first time - to my extreme embarrassment - learned that he played both the character in the music video and provided the narration for Cradle of Filth's Her Ghost in the Fog: to be fair, I hadn't seen the video for several years, but have always loved the song, especially the lyrics, and knew Bradley had performed the vocal narration on the album. I just didn't recognize him in the video! Of course I tried to pretend that I'd known all along, but... it didn't fool him. He was really sweet about it, though.

    One thing they changed in the sequel that no one seems to notice, is the first film is set in London -- they even say Julia is back on her home turf and we get a glimpse of Battersea Power Station. But for some reason they change the location to down-town New York(?) at the start of the sequel. I think they used the more dark and gothic aspects of the London aesthetic in the first film to a great effect. Though setting the sequel in the hospital managed to maintain some of that. I love the first two films, but can't get on board with any of the others.

    Love your guys' measured reactions. You joke a bit during the film but just enough to make it entertaining but not distracting. You don't talk for 20 seconds about things tangentially related to what's happening on screen. Most importantly you are willing to look at what a movie is trying to do and crediting it for that. Judging a film not on your expectations, but on its own merits, is the best thing any movie-watcher can do.

    The best of the series based on how you learn more of how the Cenobites came to being, notably Pinhead, originally Elliot, a former WW1 soldier. I snuck in to watch it in a video lounge during a residential away week with school on the Isle of Wight and was totally traumatized at the time by the scene where Channard (the excellent Kenneth Cranham) is transformed into a Cenobite by Julia even though the then VHS version had footage of the barbed wire slicing into his head, cut. Only the melting Nazis scene on Raiders of the Lost Ark could level with it at the time. A few years ago and finally watching both again I loved it. ....and to think I hesitated (lol)
