One important point: Unlike other players who can see videos of other legends, Pele had no opportunity to see the game play and style of any legend. So he was a real genius.

You realise all this does is prove that pele isn't the best ever? The level of football played keeps continual getting better, like you said pele didn't have anyone to look to for half of these things, they are new things he brought to to the game, this just tells you that the game was still developing back then, Messi and Ronaldo now adays have learnt from all the legends before them and put all of there game into the way they play where as pele just had what was to work with back then.

Wow, this is really an eye-opener. Not only he was 40 years ahead of his time, but he paved a way for all legends that were yet to come. Pele was like a Zidane, Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo, Cruyff, Iniesta and many others embodied in one human being. I honestly had no idea he was on this level, just wow.

Had the pleasure to know Pele during the 1970's when he played for the Cosmos and when he visited Jersey City to play with Santos against Italian teams. Traveled with the Cosmos and Pele when I was a sports writer for two daily newspapers in New Jersey. I never saw him refuse an autograph or a handshake. He was incredible both on and off the field. And when I met him again in Athens, Greece 10 years ago, he remembered my name. Pele, my friend, RIP.

Stop 😂 Players learn tricks from each other. It’s very much a collective effort. Garincha was a better dribbler than Pele by most accounts. Football has long been a religion in Brazil and the players feed each other new ideas. That’s not taking away anything from Pele because I’m sure he has his own inventiveness, but you’re probably giving him a little bit more credit than he deserves.

He played with a heavier ball in fields that looked more like potato plantations; he played before yellow and red cards were invented; he played against butchers and, even though there were not medical advances as today, he overpowered his opponents who could have caused really hard physical injuries··· a complete athlete, made goals with both foot and head. A freaking master! What a shame we do not have more videos. Living in days where everyone records everything and soccer is a huge mass industry, Pelé could have been an everyday viral videos maker

    Things you should know:
    1) Pele early debut, before his first World Cup is not recorded as film is not mainstream yet. So all the crazy thing he does, only the fan in the stadium will ever see.
    2) substitution is not allowed back then. If you injured also you need to complete 90 minutes. And defender was crazy as no rule to protect attacker.
    3) Pele once played for 4 teams at once since he need to serve military at age 18. So he played for Santos, national team, barrack team in military league, and inter-region military league. So 3 match in 24 hours is NORMAL. remember, NO SUBSTITUTION ALLOWED.
    4. Back then, exhibition match pay very little, even with Pele in the team. It was said Santos only earn 5k usd per match. So they put their schedule as hell. They can fly everyday to another country for a match across the world.
Now REMEMBER, DESPITE ALL THIS, PELE WON THREE WORLD CUP. Three. And he become league top scorer EVERY SEASON. if that is not a legend I don't know what is.

I had always thought George Best was the best player in the world. After I had the fortune to witness Pepe’s greatness during a friendly game played by Santos against Newcastle on June 4, 1972 in Hong Kong. Newcastle led 2-1 in the first half but Pele scored 3 fantastic goals in the second half to win the game. One of the goals was the est goal I have ever seen. Pele received the ball in the midfield from a overhead pass,he ran toward Newcastle’s goal touching the ball 7 times by his head, chest, thigh and feet while he ran passed 3 players and the ball never touched the ground and scored with a volley. He was like a magician performing acrobatics in full speed. The was a movie that came out and replayed that play7 times. I kept going back to the theater to watch that play. I wish somebody had that movie or video to show Pele’s skills. He truly is the king and the best.

Apis Malik and he did it on a shitty pitch everytime. Did u see how messi was bitching and said they couldn’t play well sometimes because of the pitch conditions in copa america? and they were not even that bad lol imagine him playing in pele’s era, with a much heavier ball, heavier boots, no yellow or red cards, he would break his feet in a day 😂
God, nowadays they complain that they can’t play well even if the grass doesn’t get wet before the match... that’s one of the reasons Pele is the best of all time, he did 50 years ago what people are doing now, but on way more difficult conditions

Modern pitches are so immaculate. They even have built in sprinklers to spray water, so that the ball would roll on slick when played on the ground. Modern match balls are perfectly round, retains air pressure and doesn't absorb water. The pace of innovation of modern boots when it comes to stud pattern and materials. Are fully customizable. Those factors contribute to better ball control and player movement in the modern game.

To G Tuss, you're such an ignorant for making a comment like that because it was not Pele's fault that the rest of the competition were slow and "brainless". The same was with Wilt Chamberlain when he was able to score 100 points in one single game of basketball because he was 7'2 and the rest of players were only 6'1. Same as Babe Ruth in baseball when he hit 60 homeruns in a season while the rest of the players on the American League hit only (together) 58. Those athletes were special on the time they played, same as Messi or CR7 today. Don't compare just enjoy and recognize true talent and if you were not capable of doing so, just tacē and go back to sleep.

Brasil was an up and coming powerhouse in those days and Pelé had plenty to learn from with players like Garrincha, Vava and Zagalo and a few others in the the 58 World Cup. He certainly did many plays that were spectacular and he definitely was the first to transcend the sport into a world class star. He was the Michael Jordan of his era in the sport and his record of 1,286 goals still stands today, as a testament to his greatness. He made the number 10 mythical, and what qualifies the best player in the world to wear, as a representation of his greatness in his shadow. Oh Rey Pelé, all hail the king.

This is why I cannot, I REPEAT CANNOT!!! give any other footballer precedence over Pele as the greatest ever, for apart from scoring the most goals ever he also seemed ambidextrous in the way he uses his two feet,, a magnificent header of the ball,, but most poignantly he ''invented'' adding a lot of new moves to the modern game.
