This is the best Ultramarines tutorial and this is how I want to paint my marines after getting back into the hobby. I do have a question for you bit of a strange one but your Macragge Blue seems a lot lighter than mine. I've tried different base coats i.e. lighter and darker and it's still coming out the same, have you added anything to your paint to lighten it? Or is it anything to do with the lighting you use to film please help because it's driving me mad :)
Hi Lee - thanks for your kind words! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! To answer your question- the blue comes straight out of the pot - so it could be the lights that are making it look lighter
So which black and which white for this undercoating? I think this step matters because when I base coated my ultra marine with Abaddon black then added the Mccrage blue, the minature ends up being very dark! Plz correct me if I am wrong. Thank you! Great video!
Thank you for this vidéo ! You have make a good job on this figurine of Space Marine ! And excuse me ! Could you give me a type of brushes do you use on this vidéo ? Please thank you very Much !
Hi, great vid again. Quick question-would it be useful to put a gloss wash over the macragge blue before the Laviadon shadowing to aid flow? Or is that technique best left to oils? Cheers.
@@ThePaintingCoach Awesome thank you. I do not want to paint in sub assembly and I plan on following your videos when I paint for the first time! Great videos :)
I tried drakenhof for recess shading, doesn't work with macragge blue in my opinion, the contrast is not stark enough, the base color is relatively dark already
@@ThePaintingCoach I'm a novice and I only have the macragge blue base paint and I don't know if I have to paint the entire miniature including weapons and belt or just paint the armor and sorry i used the translator to can do the question XD my English is sow bad
Is there anyway to paint ultramarines with far less paint - but still achieve a decent standard? (New to hobby and dont want to spend loads initially on a massive paintset)
I know this video is somewhat old but I have a question for you. Instead of Macragge Blue, do you think using Kantor blue which is darker I believe would work as well?
Kantor blue is a fair bit darker and will give you a much darker result - by way of comparison, check my Crimson Fist video which uses Kantor Blue as the base coat 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment Luke - off the top of my head, paints like macragge blue, mephiston red, leadbelcher, abaddon black and screamer pink are - generally the first paint I put down tends to be the base paint
That’s great thank you! Looking forward to trying out your shading method as I’ve always found that the trickiest to get right. One other quick question: do you always tend to paint your models assembled? And if so, any tricks for getting into the difficult areas
No problem! If you can get hold of some Macragge Blue spray, that will probably help speed things up! I try to leave weapons off if they cover the chest, and leave bare heads off as I tend to prime them a different colour. I build as muxh as the model as I can, until I feel it will be difficult to reach some parts - I hope that helps!
I’m going to try to paint my first Space Marine figure, and I was wondering where most of the paints you used were from. I know that some of them are from the Citadel Essentials set, but I can’t find where you got the other paints from. Also, like the other comments, this is one of the best painting tutorials for the Ultramarines I’ve seen if not the best.
Hi Matthew - thank you for your support and the kind words! All the paints I use are citadel, apart from the chrome, which is from the Vallejo model air range - I hope that helps!
The Painting Coach - Thank you! In hindsight, I probably could have looked up the names of the paints that weren’t in the essentials set, but that’s on me. That leads me to my next two questions: Is there a way to buy the paints in bulk, or do you have to buy each paint individually outside of the essentials set? Is there a set of paint brushes that you recommend (asking since you may have changed your mind since making this video)?
That's no problem! I'm not aware of a way to buy in bulk - sometimes GW does collections - where they pull all the paint for an ultramarine into a pack and around christmas time they do the mega paintset which has every colour in it! You may also be able to find something on amazon As for brushes, I use Winsor & Newton series 7 - size 00, 0 and 1. They are great brushes and I highly recommend them - when looking there are 2 versions - avoid the version called 'miniature' they aren't bad at all but hold a lot less paint and so are less efficient
The Painting Coach - Thank you so much for all the help! You’ve really made the process of getting into the tabletop aspect of Warhammer so much easier.
The Painting Coach - Sorry for not asking this sooner (I’ve been busy cleaning up the pieces of my Primaris Lieutenant), but what primer do you use. I know I’m being a bit of a stickler, but I just want to recreate your results as best as I can. And once again, I can’t thank you enough for the great videos and help you’ve given me down here in the comments.
Thanks for the comment Jacob! In general all Sergeants have red helmets with a skull icon on them (this is modelled on) Some may also have a white stripe down the middle - these are veteran sergeants. These are known as 'codex compliant' chapters - if you can get hold of the space marines codex as this explains it in more depth (although there will be a new one coming out after July)
im new to painting . when your doing your highlights how do you keep your brush tip wet all the time . im finding i have to much paint on the brush or it goes the other way and i get a dry tip . im using the same brush as you
Welcome to the hobby! Try tapping your brush on a paper towel/kitchen roll between taking paint off the palette and putting it on the mini. Also a good tip is the twist and pull your brush towards you when you load it with paint to get a nice sharp tip - hope that helps
Do you know of any non-GW paints that can closely resemble the GW paints that you used in this video, either mixed with another paint or on its own? I want to get into 40k, and I don't have enough money right now to afford GW's expensive paint.
Hi David - thanks for the comment! Here's a link to a colour conversion chart www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart I think vallejo are a bit cheaper than GW
Just primed and hit my 5 starter set marines with a blue and a blue armor wash. Then did a light drybrush on edges. Nervous about moving on as they look ok so far 😂
The Painting Coach yes I did and the macragge blue is just normal out of the pot of course I thinned it down and such but I still get that dark rich blue like you get from the spray
That's strange - sounds like I did exactly the same - I don't know the answer I'm afraid - I would say check using another pot but don't want to encourage spending extra!
as a new player seeing this... 25 paints, $5,00 each, I know this is an expensive hobby, but a $125,00 investment just for paints, just for marines, not counting brushes, kits, books... yikes, it really seems steep

How do you do your zenithal priming? Do you use Citadel sprays or a airbrush? Is it possible with spray cans?
Thanks for leaving a comment! I do both - the key to using spray cans is to use short sharp bursts until you get the effect you want
So which black and which white for this undercoating? I think this step matters because when I base coated my ultra marine with Abaddon black then added the Mccrage blue, the minature ends up being very dark! Plz correct me if I am wrong. Thank you! Great video!
Thanks Adam - this is chaos black with corax white sprayed from above 👍🏻
Thank you for this vidéo ! You have make a good job on this figurine of Space Marine ! And excuse me ! Could you give me a type of brushes do you use on this vidéo ? Please thank you very Much !
Thank you for the comment! I use Winsor and Newton Series 7 size 1, 0 and 00
You can get them here amzn.to/30iL1G7
Merci Thank you so Much for the Quick answer
No problem!
Hi, great vid again. Quick question-would it be useful to put a gloss wash over the macragge blue before the Laviadon shadowing to aid flow? Or is that technique best left to oils? Cheers.
Cheers David - you can - although the Leviadon Blue doesn't have the same capillary action as the oil paint would
I just don’t know ho to get that metal on the helmet while it’s on the model. It’s skipped in the video. Any tips?
All I can say is to be careful when you apply it - and I would paint the metal first, then paint over any areas you spill
@@ThePaintingCoach Awesome thank you. I do not want to paint in sub assembly and I plan on following your videos when I paint for the first time! Great videos :)
@@ThePaintingCoach Did you paint them all after fully building them?
Good luck!
I tried drakenhof for recess shading, doesn't work with macragge blue in my opinion, the contrast is not stark enough, the base color is relatively dark already
If it's not dark enough for you, you could try nuln oil or some thinned Black Templar :)
@@ThePaintingCoach yeah I usually use nuln oil because of that, gotta try the black templar, I got a pot but never tried using it for recess shading
Thin it a little and make sure you have a brush with a good point on the tip
Mad lad used a bottle of Citadel Colour to hold the model
can it be painted with primer and leaving only the weapons and belt unpainted?
How do you mean
@@ThePaintingCoach I have painted the miniature of a marine and I have painted only the armor with the base paint of the issue
I'm sorry I still don't understand 🤔 do you mean you want to leave the weapon and belt the same as the primer?
@@ThePaintingCoach I'm a novice and I only have the macragge blue base paint and I don't know if I have to paint the entire miniature including weapons and belt or just paint the armor and sorry i used the translator to can do the question XD my English is sow bad
No problem - now I understand - just the armour 👍🏻
Is there anyway to paint ultramarines with far less paint - but still achieve a decent standard? (New to hobby and dont want to spend loads initially on a massive paintset)
Check my latest tutorial where I speed paint them - I use a lot less
@@ThePaintingCoach Will do - thanks for the fast reply
For airbrush users, would airbrushing the mcrage blue on all of the mode be bad? I don’t personally think so but I figured I’d ask
That would work fine 👍🏻
32:16 what does 2:1 mix ratio mean? Sorry, I’m new to the hobby lol
Welcome to the hobby - it just means 2 brushfulls of a paint and 1 brushfull of another - hope that helps!
The Painting Coach ohh so you dip your brush into paint 2 times and 1 time into another to mix it?
Yep spot on!
The Painting Coach thanks mate :)
No problem :)
Hi, thanks for the video. Are all the paints listed layer paints or are any of them base like the blue and black?
You may also be able to find something on amazon
As for brushes, I use Winsor & Newton series 7 - size 00, 0 and 1.
Can't seem to find some of these colors .
Which ones are you missing? They are all citadel (apart from chrome) so should be avaliable from GW if nowhere else
I am completely new to Warhammer. Why are some painted with red helmets and such and some aren't? Do all "Sergeants" have red helmets?
Thanks for the comment Jacob! In general all Sergeants have red helmets with a skull icon on them (this is modelled on)
Some may also have a white stripe down the middle - these are veteran sergeants.
@@ThePaintingCoach ok thank you for your help il give this a try tomorrow . great videos btw
No problem 👍🏻
Do you know of any non-GW paints that can closely resemble the GW paints that you used in this video, either mixed with another paint or on its own? I want to get into 40k, and I don't have enough money right now to afford GW's expensive paint.
Hi David - thanks for the comment! Here's a link to a colour conversion chart
www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart
I think vallejo are a bit cheaper than GW
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you!
No problem :)
Echt Nice 👍👍👍
Glad you liked it!
Just primed and hit my 5 starter set marines with a blue and a blue armor wash. Then did a light drybrush on edges. Nervous about moving on as they look ok so far 😂
Sounds like a solid start - just take your time and enjoy it!
Wasnt best results on 1st one. Hopefully a few washes will hide my mistakes. Also finding paint dries really fast even on wet pallete
Keep at it - make sure ypur sponge is really saturated and you have some excess water in the tray too
@@ThePaintingCoach i am almost finished with one and after a bit of tidy up i am happy for a first try in 23 years. Will sub. Thanks for Replys
Thanks - welcome back to the hobby!
Dude, do Black Templars
Hey thanks for the comment - you could try the Iron Hands video for black armour 😉 while I'm working my way round the chapters :)
My macragge blue seems to be much darker than yours?
Hmm - did you put it over a zenithal prime? There may also be some variation between batches 🤔
The Painting Coach it might just be your lights and I probably put it on too thickly
Could be the lights - i use a daylight lamp
I know gold means his a veteran what's Red helmet meas
Red is for a Sergeant - red with a white stripe is veteran sergeant
Veterans tend to wear white helmets ans honour guard have the gold
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks I'm more familiar with the Black Templars I don't know anything about the ultramarines
No problem 👍🏻
I swear these figures are getting bigger...
I think they are gradually!
tidy
Cheers
as a new player seeing this... 25 paints, $5,00 each, I know this is an expensive hobby, but a $125,00 investment just for paints, just for marines, not counting brushes, kits, books... yikes, it really seems steep
Try the 40K starter paint set - it will have all the basic colours you need to get started, and then you can gradually add more later :)
Too broke to even buy the codex, nice
Cracking video mate! Can you put the link to those brushes? So neat!
Also what do you use to prime them? I went straight into Mac Blue but the white makes it look super clean
Cheers! Here you go for brushes
I prime Chaos Black and then Corax White over the top - but Macragge blue is fine!
@@ThePaintingCoach couldn't see the link for the brush dude, sorry!
Nice, its top notch stuff man. Really helping out
No worries at all!
Glad it helps!
