  • After almost 2 years of fixing up and thrashing Cate's 1991 Suzuki Sierra, the time has come to sell it and move on to bigger projects.
    But before we let go of it we decided to take it out and put it to the test against its newer futuristic version; The 2020 Suzuki Jimny.
    In this video we discuss which might be best for you and why as well as some real life examples of how they perform out on the tracks.

      But when you passed the age of 60 then the Jimny would be a better choice for both Asphalt road and offroad as the Sierra will tire you out quicker then any other offroad vehicle...

    I own a 91 Suzuki Samurai and love every minute of it. I haven't had to deal with a lot of rust nor had to replace anything yet.

      The 90's really were the golden age of Japanese true 4WDs. I have a 93 Hilux Surf and same thing with that. It's 30 years old this year and everything still works, no rust issues. And now, the only two left in production are Suzuki and Toyota with one model each (Jimny/70 Series)... pretty much the trucks you and I are still driving today.

    I bought my 95 Sierra new & still have it, had no drama with the fuel gauge ever but it does drink the fuel (it's not aerodynamic at all & I give it a hard time) and it does have factory air that still works in original condition with a rag top. The secret to keep rust out of it is KEEP IT AWAY FROM BEACHES & still rust proof it. After putting a stage 2 towing cam (recurve the dizzy to suit the cam), shave the head to bring the compression up 10:1 & a webber carby on it, it can sit on 100 kms all day long & will outpower the 1.6 conversions. Doing the right things to wake it up makes a world of difference, and these vehicles are cheap to fix if something goes wrong which is rare.

      Sounds like an epic build bro! You'll have to post a video of it showing it off! Keeping them away from the beaches is definitely the way to go but it's also where they seem the most happy aswell yanno 🤣 I saw a 1975 model a few weeks ago in the Alps of Switzerland and it didn't have a speck of rust on it because it had always been kept inland was an absolute spectacle!

    Love my 97 Vitara.. even though it broke down 5 days after I swapped for it and I've been off the road for a few weeks waiting for parts... That are finally arriving today!

    I 100% agree with you, if you want a project car, there is no better choice than a Samurai/Jimny/Sierra. Im doing a series on my channel about restoring an '87 Samurai but theyre all pretty similar. They are so simple and so much fun to work on. I get why people love them so much.

      Yo my dude thanks so much. Really means alot ay we certainly had to learn the hard way but it's such a perfect car to learn all this stuff on. I only wish we had the funds to keep it. Many more to come bro! Got a hj60, first gen 4runner and 1987 turbo Toyota bus coming out soon hahaha

    Nice video guys! My partner and I have a gen 3 Jimny (1998 Jimny Wide). She definitely has the classic hard af Zuk suspension and also struggles to get to 100km on motorway (especially with larger than stock tyres). We love it so much though, lots of character and it's fun feeling so connected to the terrain you're driving on. The best thing for us is that we can still easily park it in the city, being the size of a car, but still take it where we need to off road too! We hope to get a newer Jimny like yours sometime, but it's hard not to love the older models as well 😍

      Short wheel bases you can certainly feel it all hey! We loved the Zook but those old ones get rusty quick aswell hahaha. Looking forward to sharing our future projects with you all! Keen to see more shots of you out in the sticks in 4x4 mode hehe

      @@Nathanaelslife Had a lwb SJ 413 with a glassfibre full length hard top, had front and rear ARB lockers, 6.5 to 1 low range, power steering and a 2" lift, there was almost no rust on the body and none on the chassis as it was rust proofed from new, extra interior soundproofing made it a reasonably civilised vehicle and 70mph on the motorway was okay. The new Jimny seems to be very flimsy and I don't thinl it would last long offroading.

    The Sierra was a SJ-413 or Samurai in other Countries. Other names like Jimny (original) and Katana. Rust was always a problem, but with a little TLC they lasted. Also because not much technology was built in and like no electronics. I doubt that new SUV's including the new Jimny will last 30 years. I have had an original LJ-80 and other models.

      I believe they're called sierras in Australia at least that's what this one was called. Everything seems to have different names even between NZ and aus. Tarago = estima, 4runner = Surf, Sierra = samurai etc etc

    Love the Comparison. Unfortunately here in the US the Jimny was not brought over, we did get the Samurai, X-90, Vitara, Grand Vitara, Tracker. I own a 2002 2wd 3 door Tracker and absolutely love it. I would completely upgrade to the newer Jimny if I had that option. I have seen them personally down in Mexico and they are nice for what they are.

      Suzuki left the American market in 2012 unfortunately.

    The soft top was a security concern for me. Mine also came with an aftermarket fibreglass canopy, which was more secure. I swapped them as and when I felt like it. The canopy was a awkward to store, so I usually left it on, plus it reduced the shaking and stiffened up the car a bit. When I had the soft top on, items went missing one night. But on the plus side it was an affordable convertible, most other convertibles were European, and cost a lot more. Freeway speeds were terrifying. I could cope with an hour, but a long road trip wouldn't have been fun.

      You can get a fiberglass canopy for them still, in fact I'm looking at getting one myself for the security reason because I really like the vehicle & had it since new

    Thanks for the video. Just a small correction, the samurai / sierra has a 40L tank, not 50L. There are simple ways to tackle the rust. Besides using a rust buster, spray Lanolin oil on the under carriage and inside the body where you can, it will prevent rust. Enjoy your new jimny.

      Strange we managed to get 50L of fuel into our one maybe someone before us swapped it out.

      @@Nathanaelslife yes, must be an aftermarket tank fitted in yours. I’m in South Africa, and I’m confident in saying all Samurais, Sierra’s, Gypsies and SJ413’s were all fitted out of factory with 40L tanks world wide. Bonus for you.

    I had a 1989 suzuki sierra for 20 years 380000km on the clock same motor they need a 6 speed gearbox or overdrive on the transfer case good car easy to work on but they dont need to rev so high on the open road

      We just found them on ebay, needed a special connector to get them to work and then needed to replace the alternator just to power them so unless youre up for changing all of it id stick to the OG ones hahaha

    in terms for 4WD capability they would seem the same but they aren't, the purely mechanical 4WD system in the sierra is better than the jimny in all practical purposes when in the bush and your vacuum hub decides to leak air and unlock you are in a lot of problems, also the transfer case of the sierra is gear driven while the gen 3 jimny and up had a gear chain which does stretch overtime

      In Australia they are called Sierra. Same as 4runners in Aus are called surfs in New Zealand. Dunno why

    Are you sure about the fuel consumption on the sierra? 450km to 50L is 11.1L/100km. Way higher than I thought it would be

      From what we have experienced recently it actually seems to be closer to 12Litres now which is crazy considering my HJ61 Landcruiser gets better fuel consumption than that and its probably double the size and weight!

      My Suzuki Samurai (SJ413, Hitachi Carb) from 1989 needs about 9 Liters/100 km.

      We have actually decided to sell the new Suzuki, as it's average fuel consumption is now 14.5L /per 100km. We put 32" tyres and a roof cage on it and it's just too costly to drive now so we're getting rid of it. We have taken it to Suzuki and they said that's at the higher end of fuel consumption but it's not out of the norm for these cars which blew my mind haha

      @@Nathanaelslife wow that would have been costing a fortune! My old 2.7L petrol hilux gets about 12.5L with the same tyres but no roof cage. That's what I ended up with instead of a zook. Loving it so far
