Cobray Terminator at the Range: The Worst Shotgun Ever

Most of the guns made by Cobray are pretty awful, but one can at least understand the market they were made for. The Terminator is different, because it really is rather incomprehensible who would have actually thought that a single shot, open bolt 12 gauge shotgun with a terrible stock would be a good thing to spend money on. Really the only explanation I can come up with is that it looks industrial and mean, and I suppose some people would have bought it just for that.
Having taken one to the range now, my suspicions of its terribleness have been fully confirmed. It actually is painful to shoot, and the open bolt slamfire mechanism does a greta job of magnifying the inevitable flinch it will give you. It's clunky and annoying to reload, and also to unload after firing. I never did figure out why it was failing to fire so much for me, unless it was simply a short firing pin with deep-set primers. To be honest, I don't really care. I'm just happy to be able to send it back to the generous (if perhaps sadistic) viewer who loaned it to me.
Remember, switching to your Zip 22 is always faster than reloading
And then it jams
I honestly don't know what is worse, the Zip or the Cobray Terminator :/
That's not necessarily a true statement... Well, provided that you intend to continue firing.
‘Remember, switching to your Zip 22 is always faster than clearing the jam’

Ben Watkinson hi points are ugly and uncomfortable, but they’re reasonably reliable, especially for the price. With the terminator shot gun and .22 zip gun you’d be lucky to get them to fire even once.

I didn't think it fired at all. Looked like 9 or 10 misfires (I lost count). Although there was some smoke?
It fired a few times, you can tell when there was smoke and recoil. The microphone peaked and didn't pickup the sound of the gunshot properly though.
When in doubt, call it misfire.
@@77gravity you know it fired when ian says something lol, also I think the last 4 shots in the video fired
@Sm3xyM3xican has it right - when Ian pauses for a second before looking annoyed, it misfired.
When Ian flinches before muttering, "Gah!" or, "Jeez!" and rubs his shoulder, it fired.
They say the loudest sound in the world is hearing a click when you expected a bang...
Using this gun must be absolutely deafening.

No one likes the sound of door closing.
This is accurately named the ‘Terminator’ given how many Terminator movies there have been where the cybernetic robot from the future, programmed to kill a particular person, fails utterly at killing its target.
SSky06 isn’t cybernetic robot a bit of a redundancy?
There were some termies in the comics that did, but aside from T3's John Connor by the T-850 in the future, no hostile film T has ever accomplished its objective
With the very possible exception of Dark Fate, but Imma not spoil a movie people like/hate so let's put it there
Well they couldn't even kill Sara Connor before she became a real badass or John Connor when he was still a juvenille delinquent, hehe.

But if we forget it, how will we learn never to do it again?
This one deserves a visit to an electric-arc furnace. Industrial version of the electric chair.
This gun is hilarious. It's almost like it's designed to have as much recoil as possible. The stock has no give whatsoever, it's a shotgun, so it kicks fairly heavy to begin with, and on top of all that the whole mass of the mechanism, which is most of the gun, is already moving backwards, so you have to absorb that momentum too. Wow.
on top of that when it fails to fire it puts a tiny dimple in the shell so you have to put your fingers right next to the hot shotgun shell to move the barrel chamber forward & unload the bloody thing
The fact that misfires have recoil really says something
@@adamwilson7811 This reminds me of the Boy Scout camp where I first learned to shoot. Because Boy Scout safety rules they load each round for you. The guy loading the rounds kept a spent shell with the front cut off so it is the same size as a loaded round in his pocket, so if you had a bad habit of flinching and yanking the shot he would load the dummy and you would jerk backwards despite the gun not going off. It looks a lot like this, only here the shooter is not the problem, it's the gun.
The mechanism moving backwards should pull the rest of the gun forwards though?
@@HALLish-jl5mo The Newton's third law pairing prior to the round actually firing is between the shooter's front hand and the front half of the gun, not the front and back parts of the gun. That chain of force actually makes the shooter move forward slightly, which would marginally increase the felt recoil if anything.

Who the hell thought this was a good idea?! A single shot (???) shotgun made in the 80s constructed to look like more of an older SMG with a flimsy folding stock and an unnecessarily uncomfortable loading system. Ian has shown a lot of guns that were not that great but that one is just horrible.
I think the only thing it would be good for is a movie prop.
I can only see one potential use case for it. It's so dirt simple, it should be possible to mass produce and sell new for 30 bucks. If it was also somewhat reliable, I could see some people buying it and a couple boxes of ammo just to throw in the trunk or pack in a go bag for survival situations.
Of course, this thing cost more and isn't reliable so yeah it's useless. I'm just talking about the concept.
Plus from what I understand it's pretty heavy for a single shot shotgun.
Ian speculated that this was an attempt by Cobray to show the government was targeting their products unfairly. So they made a mean looking but ineffective piece of junk. Thus if even a single shot slam fire got targeted it would prove they were right.

I suppose you could make a Sten with a longer stroke to handle .410 cartridges if you want a Sten-based shotgun.
At least the Sten gun could be counted on to work most of the time.
Only at the end of the video did I realize it had actually been firing all along; without the firing noise, I thought all that was happening were malfunctions....
Me too. I think most of the shots did not fire but a few actually worked. If this is the case then we found its one positive, it's damn quiet.
When he looks at his shoulder in pain you know that it just fired
Apparently, only 3:20 , 4:26 , 4:44 and 4:50 were actual shots, and had about 5 malfunctions lmao

I have 100% spent more time watching and enjoying Ian with garbage at the range than actually exhibiting exceptional guns. The way he stays professional in the way he talks about it even when you know that juuust under the surface he wants to smash it on a rock is an art form that cannot be taught.
So am I right in saying that it's actually better to use it as a bat rather than a gun?
Mihály Törley If nothing else, it will most likely have a higher success rate of working as a bat
.... from all my sesion whit tabletop role play I can tell you that my track record whit melee stuff working in melee is not great maybe slightly better then Ians Fire record whit that thing but still.
3:47 the anger in that moustache is tremendous
It looks cool, but for something that looks simple in design, I am amazed how the designers managed to make it so unreliable. What's more, surely you'd stick a magazine on it and make it semi-auto.
AmateurHetman naw.. you would have to retool the whole thing. That would raise the cost and you would never make your money back..
@Roger Dodger No, pushing the barrel forward would just add to the overall momentum of the rest of the gun slamming back into your shoulder. It would be basically a blow-forward design in shotgun form. Ian has a good explanation of that shortcoming of blow-forward guns in his Schwarzlose 1908 pistol video: th-cam.com/video/kHQep9KW0ys/w-d-xo.html
Well one big spring in the right spot should make it semi
The only gun that still has recoil even when you haven’t shot.
This whole time I thought it wasn't hitting the primer hard enough and wasn't firing, but it was just an audio thing.
I thought it wasn’t firing?
Yep, the lack of smoke when it fired also fooled me, should've cranked the volume up
Cobray's entire design philosophy was "imagine the look on the perp's face when you pull THIS out!".
"Those perps will bust so many ribs laughing, you no longer NEED a firearm!"
"That's right! This thing's so god damned ugly that upon looking at it, your adversary will turn to stone!"
it looks like a failed sten gun
James white
Looks, and works, like a failed shed project.
At last, the sten gun has something to look down on.
James white so it looks like a normal Sten gun
a tube gun style shotgun could work and would be really cool but id make it fire from an open bolt like a smg...
Happy John, The cobray is already open bolt though :)
3:35 the way you tilt your head with frustration combined with the jumpcut just makes me cackle every damn time lmao
Also I love that a failure to fire with this gun gives as much of a jarring buck as a well-designed shotgun does when it fires
That design literally adds recoil with the barrel slamming backward... and it doesn’t even work
Plus manual loading of the cartridge AND impressively unintuitive design
It's like a worse version of those improvised pipe shotguns that people make sometimes.
@@davidthompson7723 Seriously, you could make a better gun out of some pipes and scrap metal. This is such a bad design, who thought it will be a good idea to try to sell it?
@@dawid12301d There were a couple of companies in that era that tried to build their brand off of the free advertising they'd get by producing "controversial" guns at a time when there was a lot of cultural anxiety around gun violence. The fact that we know about this thing despite the fact that they only sold like 1000 of them is proof both that the free advertising angle worked and that it wasn't a substitute for making a quality product.

It’s basically a useless one shot 12 gauge American Sten gun.
@Alec Hinshaw If I remember right, the first Sten guns were crap, but that eventually got fixed.
Thank you for doing this to yourself just for us!
Buy some pipes, rods, and an old AR pistol grip (an airsoft one will do too).
Cobble them together so it looks like a Cobray Terminator.
Now you have a Cobray Terminator that's just as useful as the real thing.
Actually, probably more useful since there's a bigger chance it will actually fire
Pzgraf someone with a pointy stick would've killed him all ready.
“Ian roasts a shotgun for 6 minutes”
I don't think you're supposed to fire it unless absolutely necessary.
I think you're just supposed to wave it around menacingly while you're robbing a bodega.

Strohmann I’d buy that for a dollar
Was that Robocop ?
At this point in my gun collecting career, I've discovered the joys of the oddball Cobray/Leinad firearms, of which I have a total of 4. The 6-shot, manually rotating .22LR derringer that looks like an unpainted 12 gauge boating flare pistol is fun, especially when the crimped rounds push the pepperbox style cylinder forward and prevent it from firing more than 3 shots. The double barrel .410 bore shotgun is literally a two-shot .410 derringer with a super long barrel stuck onto it, and a flimsy, plastic folding shoulder stock to make it legal. It's hilarious. The best out of them all, in actual practicality, is the CM-11/9 rifle, which I bought at 18 because it looked mean and evil. It also hurts to fire, or to load, or to chamber a round, since the edges are so sharp that I always slice a finger trying to pull that heavy bolt back. I haven't even dared to shoot the single-shot .45 Long Colt derringer, but it's a neat conversation piece.
I've got most of all the cobray junk....I shoot the 45lc single shot all the time, I have the double barrel, and both long versions, the under and over, and the rifle, I also have them in black powder too..not much kick at all....in fact they are easy to shoot
My dad's had the single-shot .45 derringer (Cobray model D) since before I was born, and carried it for quite a few years.
I've fired maybe a dozen shots through it, of both .45LC and .410, birdshot and high-brass 000 buck!.
Definitely only worth using it for the birdshot, as everything else is hilariously inaccurate. It's barely minute-of-milk-jug at 20 feet, and that's only when lining the bottom of the front sight post with the top of the rear sights (else it's almost a foot low at that distance)
IRRC it was about 40 bucks at some gun-show, and he pocket-carried it with birdshot while fly-fishing in the event he ran into a snake. If he fell in the water and it got lost in the river, no big loss there.

Well, kinda. Liberators generally fire at least once, reliable, before the spot welds start giving up.

Kerry Blanchard ok, Kerry, that’s funny!
Some one probably saw an Sten Gun and an Owens gun from his grandfathers collection and thought that terrible apocalyptic design would make for a "good shotgun". And thus we have a single chamber no under barreled horrible ass monstrosity. This gun makes his ancestors double barrel look like a futuristic weapon because of how bad this one really is.
That viewer is going "No take backsies" right now
This made cry so hard lol
"what? My FFL didn't give you his data when he shipped it?"
"Pity."
I was laughing at that design throughout the video as you displayed it's inadequacy. From the action slamming rearward to the obvious failure to fire this arm accomplishes the feat of making a single shot shotgun (classic break action) appear supremely desirable.
Actually this IS a single shot shotgun.
Thomas Mobley I think what he meant was that it makes the traditional cheap, nasty single shot break-actions look much better. I would have gone with something like 'makes an H&R look like an H&H'.
Well to be fair to me he edited that to include (classic break action) after I'd made my comment. I understood what he meant, I was just pointing out that what he meant was not what he wrote.
Whoops, didn't realize that he'd edited after you commented.
@Thomas Mobley It is a none shot shotgun, as demonstrated.
That's one way to work on your flinch
