It may seem sometimes that I've never met a gun I didn't like...but I can assure you that isn't the case. The Streetsweeper, for example, is a pretty terrible gun.
Originally designed in 1983 by a Rhodesian man named Hilton Walker, the Striker shotgun was refined and manufactured in South Africa before making its way over to the US. Its claim to fame was a 12-round capacity in a fixed drum magazine, which was significantly larger than magazine capacities available in other shotguns at the time. Today, of course, there are several magazine-fed shotguns that can give the same capacity without all the negative features of the Striker/Streetsweeper (primarily the Saiga-12).
The more refined South African Striker guns used the vertical front grip to load and wind the drum and featured automatic ejection of spent shell cases, but the version built in the US and marketed as the Streetsweeper (could they really have picked a worse name?) was a simpler and cheaper design. The Streetsweeper has a winding key on the front of the drum, and shells must be manually ejected with a rod much like a Colt Peacemaker revolver. It also "features" a nice cylinder gap, and sprays gas and particulates for out the front of the drum onto the shooter's forearm and out the back into the shooter's face. The trigger is a double-action type similar to a revolver's, except that the first stage releases a catch and allows the drum to rotate one position under spring tension, where a revolver rotates with pressure supplied from the trigger mechanism. The second stage of the Streetsweeper (I feel dirty just typing that name) trigger releases the hammer to fire a round.
In 1994, the Treasury Department issued a finding that the Striker-12 and Streetsweeper shotguns did not have a sporting purpose. Since they have bore diameters over .50 inch (as do all 12ga and 20ga shotguns), this redefined them as Destructive Devices under the NFA. As such, existing ones had to be registered with the ATF, and sale of one today requires a $200 tax stamp and the standard NFA transfer process. The side effect, however, is that barrel length of destructive devices is unregulated, and to the guns can be cut down to 12" (the shortest convenient length, given the handguard) barrels without any other paperwork or legal issues.
I got my hands on an example of the Streetsweeper with its original 18" barrel, and took it out to the range for a spin:

@Big Tone, Rounds, not shells. Shotgun shells are usually larger than bullets, so a shotgun holding 100 shells in a drum mag would be, in all seriousness, stupid.

@@vonsvinpals It's looks cool but I think it would work much better if it was mechanically more similar to the M32 grenade launcher. That way you could eject all the spent shells at once and not feel like you need a third arm to load it.

Sometimes, guns are forgotten because they were ahead of their time, trying to accomplish more than the technology of the time allowed. Sometimes, gun are forgotten because they were great designs but unable to compete in the market due to one reason or another.

Lightest Void Expense mostly. Innovative designs need to pass on the cost to create those innovations onto the customers. In the 17th century, for example, the Dutch had repeating airrifles that could fire a ton of shots before they needed to be reloaded, were smokeless, and virtually silent. However, with the processes they had at the time, the cost of making one of the airrifles could've gone into making dozens of muskets.
Colt wasn't the first guy to make a revolving pistol, he is just the first one made one good and reliable enough to actually worth buying over a cheaper single shot flintlock.

The design is just begging for a negligent discharge. You can't remove a magazine to make sure is is unloaded and you can't be 100% sure at a glance that the drum is clear.

Its basically revolver shotgun that has an extraction mechanism of a M1873 Peacemaker.
I would take the design, make Its magazine removable and thats It.

And no, it was definitely NOT a Saiga for $400 in 2021. It was probably a JTS-12 or one of the other Chinese Saiga clones.

I actually fired that thing in a range 1991 in Texas as I visited the US as I made my first personal experience with real firearms. After some shots with a 38 revolver and a 45 pistol I had a chance with the streetsweeper as the range owner talked with the owner who came in and he was quite delighted to show off his baby. Interesting experience with all three guns.

You know, I always tried to use this weapon, and my luck was always just ASS with it. You would think a semi auto shotgun with 12 rounds (though insane reloads) would be awesome, but I swear almost every time I'd try to use it, I'd fire at someone twice at close range and do zero damage and get knifed. I love the shotgun and wanted so badly to use it, but after a while I specifically avoided it out of superstition, because I just died over and over the second I equipped it.
Meanwhile AA-12 with foregrip (with Scavenger), or akimbo Rangers: fucking god tier.

@@bruv3039 no. There is like 4 variations of the streetsweeper and all have different changes. Striker has a thumb rotation place below the loading chamber as 1 difference. There is others, but I haven’t done a whole lot of research (only about 2 hours).

Some models has an auto eject feature. Tapped gas blew out a fired hull every time it is fired leaving the last one.

Thanks for the memories. Several friends and I joined a trap and skeet club. Several other members would show up with Pirazzi shotguns and look down on us shooting Winchester and Remington pumps. We always talked about buying a street sweeper and showing up at the club and shoot trap with it. Just to thumb our noses at the snobs! 😅

No sights, sharp stock, terribly slow reload/unload, this might be the worst shotgun I've ever seen. I'd rather have a break-action single-shot than this thing.

I remember the hub-bub about this back in the day, never bought one, never wanted one, knew it wasnt worth buying, even though i never even handled one.
