My favorite Leatherman is my Skeletool CX. I also have a Super Tool. Next on my list is the Crunch. You may not care, but I did like your review. Very informative, and you have an easy to listen to style.
Thankyou I really appreciate that. I also bought that skeletool cx for my father, it's definitely handy, and so lightweight. Keep an eye out on ebay, sometimes you can get the crunch for $50-$60 as new. Have a good one!
well, I love it. I have another the leatherman (charge), which I never use anymore, I'm going to try and swap over the flat edge blade and the can opener. but each to his own.
yeah i got the super tool and i live in one of the harshest climates in north America in the Appalachian mountains using it hard for 15 years field dressing animals and cleaning fish beat it up doing all kinds of camping and outdoors stuff i do love the shredded edge for or cuttings up deer back straps into steaks and cutting sinew off the back legs for cordage and the standard knife for skinning buck and cleaning fish the Leatherman to me has the best knife's on it then any multi tool i have ever used but i will say this the can opener isn't as good as my swiss knife i like the all reamer in case my gun sling brakes or my belt rip's iv used it many times fixing my belts and a gun sling a few time over the years i think the saw and file on mine is on pare with m swiss knife tho these are another one of my fav multi tools ill never leave home with out it
Enjoyed the year in, review. Good job. I've had mine for just 2 weeks and knowing how much you've liked using yours, after using it for a year, was good to know.
Thankyou! I'm literally in central Africa right now with it, and it's on my hip, same as always. Been nearly five years now I think. Still as solid now as it was then. I'm really glad Leatherman kept making them. There was a long time. They were becoming very expensive to buy. Good luck! Hope it's as good for you as it has been for me.
Already came in big handy. Guy on my crew shot a nail into his finger and while everyone was still scrambling I was already pulling out the Crunch. Got that thing pulled out a LOT faster amd smoother than it would have been otherwise.
Holy shit. Handy indeed. That's a badass story. Best I've done is rebuilt a clutch hydraulic system in a piece of shit land rover in central Africa. Not really much blood or screaming on that one I'm guessing those weren't ringshank nails in your mates finger. But that's a badass story!
Regarding 3:41, if you need an EDC can opener, then get a P-51 can opener which is about the size of a SD Card, thin, lightweight, folds flat and can fit into your Leatherman Crunch tool pouch or onto a keychain. The P-51 can opener has been used by GIs for many decades.
I have several of them from when I was in the army. They're good little things for sure. And good point about fitting it in the pouch. I still wish they had it on the leatherman though ha ha ha But that's a good easy solution.
Absolutely mate. 100% would recommend for a tradesman over the wave. The 1" locking grip on the crunch absolutely puts it at the bigger advantage for you.
hey, thanks, and you're very welcome. i've used it to fix my cars when in remote areas a lot, so i definitely hope its as helpful for you, as it is for me. best of luck!
You have to be careful with this leatherman, it's really specific with how much room it has for tools. The knife is the longest thing in there...... And it ain't very long.
Will be getting another crunch soon. Lost the last one and really miss it. Without too much detail, it was a gift from someone who told me it was an official CIA tool.
that's badass! but if you keep your eyes posted on youtube. i picked up a second one about two months ago, just because i love it so much, i want a spare one. and got it for $55 like new in box. and it really was like new. so there are still bargain ones out there, and in my opinion, its well worth it.
I love how much you love this thing, brother. I have a few Leatherman’s & both Swisstools, but you’re right, the Crunch is a special tool. I’ll toyed w/ pocket clips on it, & would like a plain edge, but aside from that it’s near perfect. (Ok, ball bearing retention for the pliers head would be cool.) Anyway, I appreciate the review from another guy in the trades w/ eclectic interests
Thanks man! Really appreciate that! Each to his own on the pocket clip, I really like having the pouch as that package I made. 4 years later I'm still using this all the time. But you and I definitely have the same feeling about this tool! Have a good one, and thanks again!
Looking inside there seems to be a rollerball, or a leaf spring (for lack of a better term) I’m guessing that helps hold it in snug. Doesn’t feel magnetic, but feels like it’s made just right for it, if that makes sense.
@supernotfunnyman ok thank you. No I bought mine off of ebay and it seems as if that piece is missing. I was trying to see what it looks like so that I can make mock up or something thatbwill work.
@@roads543 oh damn, that's frustrating, I'm sorry to hear that. it looks like two tiny leaf springs, side by side that drops down inside the bit hole, about a quarter inch down. it's on the outside, pretty much in line with the 9 cm marking on the back of the crunch. there is actually a bolt head that is covering the 8cm mark, I bet if you undo that, you could take the nut/bolt housing that holds the locking pliers bolt out of the crunch, and that would (In my best guess) show you where the little leaf springs are either meant to be, or maybe they got bent up inside of it? that's my best guess. and I hope that helps!
Hey buddy, you got a bottle opener on that one, check the bottom of the tiny flat screwdriver (I wonder if it may be used as a can opener too!). Let me know if you find it ;)
I forgot to add that I was wearing a casio protrek watch. I've since upgraded to the titanium version, which is just a beautiful tough watch. I destroy my watches and the resin cased version didn't last long enough. So far so good with the titanium, and it's super light as well
You know that's a good question. I just used a bit kit I had at work. That I used with my bit extender in the impact driver kit. Maybe that's the answer?
@@supernotfunnyman Thst makes sense! I was trying to put together an EDC kit, I think I’ll try to get the leatherman bit sleeve that fits over the Philips and see how that does as well. Love the video, I am a material handling maintenance worker and wish this multitool wasn’t so hard to find. Your video made me want to get myself one!
@@MysticMountainNebula I can't believe they stopped making these. Last time I checked, Grainger was the best price, about $110 I think. Really glad you liked the video! Looks like you and I are in the same kinds of positions. So hopefully it's helpful.
Two things are amazing to me: 1. How almost every significant innovation in multitools has been made by Leatherman, with this "Crunch" being no exception. And, 2. The amount of criticism Leatherman gets from whiners. Good review, thanks
Thanks for the comment. And I absolutely agree. I personally think that the crunch is an amazingly designed multi tool. Being able to have it fold up the way it does, but still have vice grips. Genuinely impressive. And this specific crunch has saved my ass many times. Thanks again.
Knobs, handles, boards, pipes, regular multi tool pliers don't do the job. Been looking for one with channel locks, but this is the closest thing. Phillips head, file or flathead & lanyard ring can get replaced.
you sort of can, it really comes down to how close you can get the tool you want to replace it with, and if you have the skill to then replicate the shape of the tool you want, with the one that is in there. for instance, the flat blade screwdrivers and the phillips head screw driver bits, are specifically shaped, so they will all close flat. if you switch the flat blade screw drivers around, then you won't be able to close the crunch any more, so they have to match the shape of what you're replacing. luckily, the blade on this is actually easier to replicate, and make it fit what you're after. but in all honesty, if you can't have the blade "lock" then you can essentially take out the "lip" on the blade, that the lock drops down into. that way the blade will no longer be "locking" and can be open and closed without using the release button on the back. to do this, take the crunch apart, pull the knife blade out, and remove the sharp lip on the blade, that allows the lock to hold the blade. ( it's really obvious when you look at the crunch from the side) remember though, one of these "lips" stops the blade from opening too far, and the other is what holds the lock in place. if you simply grind this lip down, to a more gentle slope (for lack of a better term)then the lock won't be able to hold onto the blade anymore, and your problem should be solved. if you haven't done something like this before, then just make sure you take it slow with the grinding, if you heat the metal up to much, you will get a blue burn mark in the steel, and this will instantly destroy the blades temper in that area, and make it far more prone to breaking/cracking/snapping/ ruining your day. so you can absolutely make it so the blade on the crunch no longer "locks". if a copper ever pulls you up, then you can let them try it, and they will see that even though it has a release mechanism, it isn't needed for the knife blade, and it will close. I hope this helps. also, if you're pulling the tools out of the leatherman, take good care of the spacers between the tools, and there position etc. i didn't, and it was a bastard to try and get back together in the correct sequence.
jack inabox Wow, thanks for finding the time to give all that detailed advice. You're absolutely right, if I can disable the lock and if necessary trim the blade down to 3" then I'm all good and maintain functionality. I Gonna get one of these and give it a try. BTW, couldn't help thinking that there are far better micro flashlights about these days than that mini-maglite you have. Fenix stuff are good value and very reasonable quality for a mass produced thing. Thanks again, A
Aaron Carr I'll definitely look that up. I check when I'm at the stores, and no mini flashlight seems too beat the maglight, but I wish it was better. Also, the crunch blade is already under 3 inches. So just take that lip off, and you'll be all set. And no problems with the reply. Happy to help.
My fenix e05 fell off my keychain into traffic and was run over by cars and trucks for about 1 hour. I went back and found it. It still works! Tremendous little AAA light at 85 lumens. Priced less then 20 USD.
Leatherman doesnt listen to their customers. No on likes the suraded edge and no one needs more than 1 flat head. A can opener n a plain edge blade, easy fix. There are people that work on mechanics etc. that use the heat from the engines to warm up a can of food. Would be a mint fix.
Much more affordable? Are they much more affordable because they don't make or sell them anymore? They practically don't exist as a multi tool. You can even find them on their website.

The Crunch has been hated on just like the Signal. But I love them both.
Ask tradesman and they will tell you it's great. Opinions from others not mean much.
Get a Verano vape cartridge tube..... it's fits loads of bit and fits perfectly in the larger side of the newer holster.

I had a question about the retention part of the 1/4 hex. How does it retain the bits through a magnet or a clasp of some kind? Thank you.
