  • Even though it is Sunday night, it would have still been thriving in downtown Garapan.

    Lived on Saipan from 1985-2001, lived there during the boom days, I never wanted to leave. Totally changed now. Would love to go back and visit friends one day soon.

    Sad to see. I lived out there a few decades ago. It was always fun to go to Garapan. At that time the place was full of Japanese tourists. They spent money like drunken sailors and the girls loved them. There were a ton of places to eat. Not all of them were dirt cheap but they were all interesting. As I recall, they even had a Subway.

      It is starting to gather momentum again. Two Subways now, had three, lost one.

      I'm currently working on a ship at the moment and will be back on Saipan around September. I'll hit you up in a message when I get there. There is another channel Mark's Awesome Adventures he is really cool. I sit and have a beer with him when I am there.

    Hi great video. Whats your opinion on living Saipan $1000 a month budget ?

    • @insaneseafarer
      @insaneseafarer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Things are very expensive on Saipan now. Gas in $7 a gallon, rent has tripled since I did this video and food is outrageous. A friend of mine moved there and is a healthy man just living on social security. But he works full time there too for xtra cash and he seems to be doing ok. But it is a struggle. For me, it is a very peaceful and happy place to live so I don't mind the extra expense for a quieter lifestyle.

    Why is the town so dark? Not safe!

  • @worldmikel
    @worldmikel ปีที่แล้ว

    Surprising that everyplace to stay there is very expensive! I was looking on Booking and the hostel places are around $50 a night. Hotel nights seem more like you're purchasing the place rather than just staying there. No wonder there are no tourists. Plane trips there and out are expensive. Kind of a self-inflicted wound for them.

    • @insaneseafarer
      @insaneseafarer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, and not to mention many hotels have shut down. It caters to Korean and Japanese tourists. Americans that live on Saipan use it as a tax haven. The tax rate and penalties are much less than the mainland U.S.

    • @insaneseafarer
      @insaneseafarer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I file taxes on Saipan and the taxes are separated from what I earn on ships in the States, or deep sea which is neutral in international waters.

    • @worldmikel
      @worldmikel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@insaneseafarer I understand. Despite the closures, the Japanese and Koreans keep the place afloat. Your wages are not like a typical American, too. Flights roundtrip from Chicago are $2500. I think I flew roundtrip to Singapore for $1200 before.

    • @insaneseafarer
      @insaneseafarer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@worldmikel The airlines locked this up. To survive, you need to own a business. My wife and I own a carwash and Thai spa there. I work on ships a few months a year and I am able to use many tax advantages to offset the expense. I have a friend that moved to Saipan with excitement only to be surprised with how expensive it was. It used to be so affordable but wealthy foreigners have bought up many of the structures and raised the leases to a level of craziness. My wife refuses to leave Saipan so there I stay.

    • @worldmikel
      @worldmikel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@insaneseafarer Good tip about the Japanese and Koreans. Just did a Skyscanner for one ways to and from Saipan and Seoul in October. A roundtrip could cost less than $300. So that's the way to go for mainlanders. Fly to Asia, eventually Seoul and then to and from Saipan.

    What brought about this down fall ? The pandemic? Was it a slow decline or a sudden collapse? Do you think the island will come back to it’s former glory ?

    • @insaneseafarer
      @insaneseafarer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it was a chain of events starting with Typhoon Yutu in 2018. The damage was very severe that many of the well known establishments here are still closed due to structural damages. Followed by the pandemic when, what business were still running, were forced to shut down. Add immigration law constantly changing and add a dollop of corruption with wealthy investors and governments here and we got ourselves a ghost town.
