I'm Chamorro, born and raised on Guam, and then I moved to Hawaii for college. I came back after 14 years, in 2019. I was on the island during typhoon Mawar. I have to say, this is the most honest review of Guam I've encountered. I have to agree with pretty much everything said. Thank you for the honest review.
I lived on Guam for 12 years and really loved my time there. If I didn't look at the date you made this video - I would have thought it was filmed in the 1980's. The things you talked about, are the same problems the Island has had for many years and they don't fix it.
That seems to be the reoccurring situation which sucks. Everyone wishes and expects more, but gets the same thing every time. The good thing is you can live here and just focus on the beauty of nature and the culture, rather than what's happening behind closed doors
I lived on Guam for 3 and a half years and loved it! Very humid. Expensive. The water is beautiful. 70 degrees at 2 am. The roads are bad because they are built with coral which makes it like driving on ice when it rains. The locals we found to be wonderful to the military. Everything is shipped in which make things expensive. But they have such wonderful food! I still make chicken Kelluguen and Finedene!
You are right. Both those foods are amazing. We only hope that the roads improve over time! But, I think it's very difficult for many people to live here long-term if they are not form here
My sons father in law (Chamorro) makes chicken kelluguen…. BEST EVER!!!! Finadene a little hot, but I’ll make it a bit toned down! His red rice amazing too!!!
Probably never visited Saipan, Tinian, Rota, or the northern islands. Sad. Guam is okay. The reason koreans and japanese come to Guam is because they can get a taste of the US without traveling all the way to the mainland. Guam gov is lucky, but they won’t do the right thing for everyone. They only think of themselves and their mafia bosses that like the red color.
I'm born and raised in Guam and can appreciate and understand the video with an open mind. Don't mind the other closed minded people who think everything is negative/hate towards Guam.
as for the stray dog situation, there are too many stray dogs, and not enough legal authority to capture the dogs. The pound up at GAIN in Yigo is at full capacity and cannot take all the dogs at one time if that makes sense. Everyone can report a stray dog to get captured but where would that dog be stored and kept?
Thanks for your comment. I have heard that GAIN is always full. Unfortunately, sounds like the government and local mayors don't have any plan to actually tackle such a problem.
@@KuxWolf When my dad passed he left over half of his estate to the animal shelter in his area (Dededo). We knew he would do this as he was very active in fostering and providing food to the local shelters. I was always very proud of him for that.
Matt, man you are spot on! I lived on Guam for two years and experienced many of the things you spoke about. First of all, I have to say the local people are indeed very nice and made me feel special being on their island. The abandoned cars, bad roads, pollution, and poverty is ubiquitous. I think the Island can be so much more beautiful if they got rid of all the trash and stray dogs. I learned that one of the reasons why there are so many stray dogs (Boonie Dogs) is the cost to ship them; it is extremely expensive to ship pets from Guam and often times when people leave, they simply leave their pets behind, especially their dogs. The cost of living for the local folks is out of hand, Payless and KMart are the main stores and both of them are far too expensive as well as the cost of gas. Construction is everywhere and as you mentioned is ridiculous. Ypao road has been under construction for two years and it does not seem it is going to be completed anytime soon. Guam will soon be like Hawaii where it will be too expensive for local people to live on their own land. I was paying $2,300 for basically an Efficiency, well over priced. Because of the influx of military personnel coming to the Island, the cost of housing has gotten well out of hand! I did enjoy my time on Guam, but dude this is a Great video!
Absolutely!! I've heard costs to ship pets is just astronomical!! it's so sad. Sucks that locally family-owned businesses like Payless don't have lower prices for the local people here. Like a loaf of bread can be $6 which is nuts! Things sure are getting more out of control. The future here will be very challenging. One thing is that hopefully the military forces all militants to house on base once all on-base housing is completed, this could help out a bit but as we know, they are far from completion of all bases still. Thanks for the watch and support! Take care!
@@glennwatkins1954 unfortunately we are seeing the rent market sky rocket all over the US and probably world. The COVID shake down set us behind 50years
I lived on Guam for two years and loved every thing about it. Locals weren't real friendly towards military, but this was in the late 80's. The rain was normally very small squalls. I once avoided a rain shower by crossing to the other side of the street.
What about the inside corruption of the family governments? Are they straight and clean? Even if US had no role on the island, the place wouldn't be much better either way. Look at any small Pacific Island that isn't fully run by tourism
Hit the nail right on the head! I'm local and still on island I appreciate the honesty definitely a military and tourist destination and locals get the shit end of the stick.
The reason the tourists areas look like they do is because the tourist areas cater to people from mainly Japan. It is the closest part of the US to Japan and people from Japan, Korea, China who want to experience the US go to Guam and CNMI to get the feel of the US without having to travel a day to get there. It is a short plane ride as compared as flying to Hawaii or mainland US, cheaper too. So they want the vibe of the mainland US in the tourist areas, while still catering to things like Japanese tastes when it comes to the quality of things. They expect it to be nice and perfect. Things on Guam and CNMI offer things to foreign citizens like renting muscle cars or shooting ranges. Things that they will not find in their home country. Like the food offered, like big American “hamburgers” still cater to Japanese and Chinese tastes, and are not what would be found on mainland, but they can still say they had an American Hamburger, even though it’s a fusion. But that’s the reason why the tourists areas seem perfect it because they cater to one type of tourist from one certain part of the world, not as a major tourist destination for the entire world. Not like mainland US where it caters to tourists from every inch of the world at any given time.
Ah yes absolutely. I agree with you there. Makes perfect sense. And you definitely see mostly those types of tourists doing those types of things. The only time I see other tourists is when they are visiting family stationed here or have been living here for a while. Very few western tourists come out of curiousity.
This is a great post. Yes, the asian tourists want a taste of the US 🇺🇸 without having to travel all the way there. Understandable. I am happy tourists want to come here.
Can I ask what burgers you had in Guam that “still cater to Chinese and Japanese tastes, are not what would be found on the mainland”? I’ve eaten all over Guam and have found the American food to be authentic. Also, the top tourist sources are South Korea and Japan. China is not really a common tourism market for Guam.
Also the price difference for the military is due to the fact that the military imports their own items. They are not relying on using shipping companies and paying import and export taxes to get things from Korea, Vietnam etc. They use their own ships and planes to bring supplies so it’s much cheaper and they can sell things on base for much cheaper. Military personnel and contractors are also getting set pay based on their rank. Unlike civilians, which historically can get paid anything, higher or lower wages. Depending on what their employers want to pay them. Military personnel don’t have the luxury to apply to different jobs, to make more money or up and move to a different place. They are stuck there, making what they make until they can advance in rank. So prices on a military base need to be pretty standard because it has to be affordable when there is no other option and they HAVE to remain on the island, and HAVE to remain at their pay scale.
Since the military has set up shop on these people’s island and it has caused so much strife maybe they should have some kind of employment for the natives of the island. While it may not be intentional, the presence of the military is having a negative effect for the natives.
Glad I could share some current thoughts about Guam. It's a beautiful place with many ups and downs. No matter what, it's a place all should experience and remember because there is a lot to offer :)
#5. Not California or Florida, but Hawaii. Even back in the 80's the main tourist locations looked the same and was marketed as a less expensive "Hawaii like honeymoon destination" mainly geared towards the Japanese and Koreans. Besides the military, tourism is the main source of income. #6. As my Chamorro father like to say "everyone is on Guam time" I never understood what that meant until I lived there. They are NOT in any hurry. #11 Guam is open 24 hrs a day. Though construction would make more sense being done at night I think it has to do with the lifestyle of Guam. #14 &15 There is horrible dumping and stray dogs in every part of the US. It's an issue no matter where you live. #16 you'd be surprised how many locals have access to military perks. #17 Cost of living...no argument there, but families do take care of their families better than in the mainland. Please note if it weren't for the US military, Guam would be under Japanese rule. One thing you never mentioned even when you were at Asan Point, was the monument of native Chamorros who were imprisoned by the Japanese who were liberated by the military. Please note Guam does not get any funds from the US. They are a truly resilient and loving people.
Thanks for your insight on Guam. i have been wanting to visit there for a long time. it's on my list. I'm actually surprised at have much trash there is and the lack of island support.
Unfortunately, some people just don't have common sense when it comes to cleaning up after themselves. The trash issue sucks but hopefully it'll keep improving year after year. Hopefully you can visit soon! :)
I'm glad you touched on the Stray Dogs .... ! It is what prevents me from moving there... It's not as bad as American Samoa - where the wild dogs are mean and attack at times- but it's bad enough that you notice... One local told me there are 60,000 stray dogs on the island of Guam. Not sure WHY they don't do anything about it.
Wow, really? it's bad that island too? Didn't hear anything on it. Interesting. I wonder why too. I don't think there's many NGOs to help and shelters are probably already full here.
@@microcolonelfrom what I have heard the strays in Guam are docile and mostly puppies... but there are estimated at 65000 of them.. ! But I KNOW on American Samoa the roaming wild dogs are a TERROR ! they roam and attack sometimes in packs of around 5 - you cannot go out as a pedestrian at night or you WILL be attacked. You carry rocks around with you or when approached by one , bend over and act like you are picking up a rock to get them to leave you alone.... I have NO IDEA why the authorities in American Samoa do not stop this.... it keeps me from EVER going back
@microcolonel most strys are docile and chill its fairly rare to get attacked by dogs but also yes. If they are aggressive, they do get put down. The dogs that are most aggressive would be owned dogs. As a local
Sounds like they need some Veterinarians to move there and spay and neuter a large number of strays? That seems like that would help, if it could be done
Ty for sharing your video and your opinions. You spoke the TRUTH my friend. People needed to hear it. The government is #1 in making laws but horrible at enforcing. Our island IS beautiful but we truly need a STRONG community and a very FIRM government to demand a great change for our island. Ty for sharing this hopefully it will get across many. 😊👍🏽🙏🇬🇺
I'm native chamorro. The situation with Guam unemployment is due to high immigration and not enough businesses. The government isn't spending the money sufficiently as always. I do agree with a few of your truths. When it comes to pollution... it's basically common sense...the government allows it to happen, some locals don't care, and those coming from third world type countries starting to treat the island like how they did to their country. Pretty much disgusted with political corruption influencing the destruction of our home.
Yes I see. You are right. Sufficient spending in the right places is always a problem everywhere. It's terrible to see so many job hiring signs and ads everywhere, yet the minimum wage doesn't seem to move. $9.25 an hour for the cost of living is non-sense, can't blame people for moving away.
The military isn’t making the price of things go up, it’s the shipping … most 95% of import is shipped from the United States , it’s a maritime law basically… they won’t allow china to ship things there … so , inflation etc
@Reviewsnooz, while you are correct that shipping increases the cost of common goods, because of the military presence, the supply and demand has increased. Capitalism is at work; when there is less supply and more demand, the cost of good goes up. The military is paid a cost of living allowance and a quarters allowance, many of the landlords know the amount for both COLA and quarters and charge accordingly, I know because my rent was nearly the exact amount of what the military quarters allowance is.
Wrong. The military is DIRECTLY making the cost of living horrible. The average 2bd 2ba apartment rents for 2240. Pretty specific number huh? Just happens to be the standard BHA that is given to EACH sailor in the Navy for living off base. That means that all but a few places are affordable for locals.
My wife and Iive in Japan. We went last week for three days. It was nice to basically be in America and eat American food and go shopping at American stores with just a 3 1/2 hour flight. It's nice, but yeah wouldn't want to live there permanently. Yes the beaches and water is beautiful but no matter where you live the novelty where's out after a while. The tourist area is nice but how much time you going to spend there then what? Not much to do once the novelty of the beaches where's out. As they say "nice place to visit but don't want to live there".
That's the best part about being so close to Asia. You can get a taste of the American destination without traveling too far. I think you have a good point. As a tourist, once you spend maybe a week on Guam, visiting all the tourist sites and doing all the tourist things, you will become a little bored. Being so close to Asia, 3-5 days is the happy amount I think, especially if one wants to come back in the future. For many locals here, they don't visit a lot of places as they don't always have time and again, doing the same thing a lot will just make something become boring like you said. Anyways, thanks for your input. I love Japan and can't wait to go back. :)
You did not go to America. I have not even been to Guam yet but you want the "real" America then fly to America. This is from a New Yorker who has traveled to South East Asia many times before so I speak from that experience and Guam from the videos I have seen seem more like The Philippines than the actual U.S
@@calvinsparrow9829Guam doesn’t look like the Philippines. Philippines is evidently impoverished. Guam is not. Guam is basically quite similar in look to Hawaii.
I lived on Guam for few years and had a business there my experience is they are very jealous and have sticky fingers. Another thing I noticed is they smile in your face but stab you in the back as soon as they get a chance. This is my god honest opinion
I just got a really good job that’s fully remote and can move anywhere. Since I’m living in Florida I’ve always wanted to live in Guam for 2 years or so, but I’m nervous because I’m a single 32 year old guy and feel like maybe the dating scene won’t be good out there and I will be isolated and alone… what do you all think???
I don't know a whole lot about the dating scene here. To be honest, I feel like you might be right and chances are better in Florida. There are many single military men here shooting their shot nightly. Check some Reddit forums where there is more detail about it. But it's a nice place to live for a bit and forget about the mainland.
As a resident of Guam since birth for 30+ years, there's too many mayors and senators who get paid as much as their us counterparts really don't do enough for their seats. Divide Guam into 3 sections, north, central, south one mayor for each, less mayors office. More centralized department for public relations. 3-4 senators, we have so much doing absolutely nothing through out their term.
Just trying to spread some truth and hoping that Guam has a better future, especially for the people who were there first and can't afford as much. Thanks for watchin!
I fly through Guam via Anderson AFB on my way to my home in Thailand. I've spent a lot of time there. The climate has always been so unpleasant every time I'm there. It's so uncomfortable because it's so hot and muggy. It's the Guammiest place on earth! Also, it's so expensive there, especially if you don't have a rental car. I usually prefer to be in Hawaii or Thailand and have always cut my stay there shorter than I plan to stay.
So you must be military if you're flying into the AFB. It is really hot and muggy on Guam, but there are similar climate feels in Thailand. The expensive part is the same for Hawaii (maybe more expensive). But Guam isn't for everyone that is for sure. I think it's a great place for people to come for a week vacation
I lived in South Fin in Dededo and went to JFK High School in the early 90s, and I got to experience Typhoon Omar and the earthquake that measured 7.0 to 8.3 🤔 (Hard to remember, been long time) now to take my kids and wife to show her how I grew up.
I was born and raised here on Guam. Then after high school, I went to live with relatives in California in the Los Angeles area in 1997 while attending classes at community colleges but eventually dropped out. I got spoiled by my parents sending me money every month and after seven years of not able to get a permanent job I had to come back to Guam in 2004 because my parents could not afford to send me any more money. I did eventually get a job here working at the bakery department of a grocery store but I can only afford to support myself. I would like to return to California someday but I heard it's now difficult to find a cheap place to live. I would like to live in L.A. again near the theme parks and Hollywood celebrities. Maybe if I become a best selling author or some big TH-camr, maybe I could but that's never gonna happen.
Interesting! I've heard about many people going back and forth. Unfortunately, the living expenses of California are outrageous and many people are moving away from California now. I'd suggest other states as they are cheaper. Hopefully you can go back one day :)
@MattReardonVlogs Thanks Matt! The way things are going now with my financial situation. It makes more economic sense to just stay here since I already have my own house and most of my relatives and friends are here. I have a good stable job with benefits and I don't want to start from scratch by moving to another state. If I could save up to visit California for vacation, then I can do that instead of moving back there to stay. 😊
The ONLY bad thing i have to say about Guam is that its so expensive to get there from the states. I want to go back so bad. Take my kids. Introduce them to a beautiful island with a beautiful culture. Live on island time but its so expensive to get there. If youve ever lived there you will always leave a little piece if your heart on the island. And it will call to you for the rest of your life.
@MattReardonVlogs one way or another i will definitely make it happen. My kids need to see paradise one day! Enjoy your time there man just know when you leave you'll always want to go back to visit. It never leaves you.
Not sure I agree with you that the Military is responsible for higher prices. Yes the prices are lower on base, but those items are shipped in by the military and are subsidized for people serving in the Military. It has very little impact on grocery prices off base. But the military may (probably does) impact cost of housing off base since there are a lot of military people living off base. Also, it needs to be said that the Military provides tens of thousands of civilian jobs for local Guam people. Best I can tell using Google that number is around 66,000 well-paying civilian jobs for the citizens of Guam, but that was 2018 data, so probably more than that now.
I know. That's not what I was saying... Military has a big role in the inclination of housing prices off-base. They rent/buy up a portion of the supply driving the prices up. GRoceries and stuff at Payless, CostUless and so on are shipped from US & other countries, causing higher prices due to time, fees, etc...Many stores are family owned and prices are listed at "what they want to profit". You're right, the military does provide a lot of jobs and higher income for locals in some situations. Also, many local islanders are military-members as well. I wouldn't doubt a significant percentage of residents being employed by US companies/military. One thing for sure is that corruption causes a lot of problems here and forces locals to suffer more than they should
Hahaha true forgot that one. Maybe I should do a wildlife video of Guam. Birds are almost non-existent, because of Brown tree Snake and same with the bats, from snakes and people.
In terms of development, Hawaii takes the trophy. There are many similar beautiful features in terms of natural beauty. But they are different in many ways too.
Hawaii is Americanized so as close to mainland/stateside living as possible. Guam is where you go when you are looking for true culture and island life.
I’d really like to go to the Marianas, both Guam and the CNMI. I’m curious though I wonder what political status do the people want? While I want both Guam and the CNMI to become states in the US, I don’t know what the people who live there want. The residents of the territories are US citizens by birth, but they don’t have the right to vote for the president and don’t have a voting member in Congress, that needs to change. The residents are US citizens and need to have the same rights as their fellow citizens living in the states
I think there is a mix of what they desire, some natives want independence while others want to join as a state. Yeah, I agree. It's so odd how that works. If such territories became states, I believe living quality could improve but also continue to make things more expensive at the same time. Let's see what the future holds.
@@MattReardonVlogs I think becoming a state in the union would be a better decision in my opinion. And ya our fellow Americans are treated as second class citizens just because of where they live and I believe that it needs to change. While ya it’s expensive with the Jones act, maybe a possible exception could be made to create competition and lower prices, and maybe more air cargo to elevate the travel time
Until they change their minds and become a state they don't get that right. Follow the constitution. Sorry that's their government for ya. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Many islands are like Guam and many rural areas of the US have old cars on the side the - Many islands only have power a few hours a night - I live in the deep South US. - Up till 1960 there were no power lines from the grid- Many had battery's that there house ran on like in campers and sailboats - My guess is he is from a cit and looks at things from a city person's point of view - Up till 2000 at times our power was out as often as it was on - I've rode out about 20 hurricanes in my life time - it can be a lights out for a while -
Actually, from an area with a population of 4x less than the island of Guam lol. Yes, many places have similarities and a lot of that stems from readiness of their local governments willing to provide and care
After u said people don't know how to drive ... I just need to say that I must be one of the luckiest people in the world because I lived there for almost 20 years and never had an accident on the road. And yes, I drive and have a driver's license. I've been here in the mainland for more than 5 years due to my husband's job. Yet everyday of that 5 years, i wish I'm back on Guam coz Guam is home. So people who want to know more about the real Guam, I'm open to receiving any questions and messages 😊
@MattReardonVlogs me to ... coz most of those times that I was there driving, either I was in a hurry because I need to get to work on time or I was very tired coming from partying or hiking. Lucky in deed .. or maybe just alert enough 🤣
@MattReardonVlogs hahaha no they'll run me over. Lol better to get a bigger hummer and go around them. Like we did in Dubai. Lol but thanks for the tip.
I grew up there. It's changed alot since it became more tourism-focused. Crime was high. Traffic accidents was hell. Most every locals lived off welfare and unemployment. It is exactly what happens when cities turn Democrat majority. Homeless, drug addiction...etc. Only way to get off the island growing up is to join the military. The military gains so many recruits from this island. One thing is clear .. there is a privileged class and like Hawaii .. its a one party state.
@@MattReardonVlogs I miss what it used to be. I had gone back a couple times and everytime it just seemed to turn to a pay to enjoy like Califonia. Talafofo falls used to be a hike..and free to dive off of, now Korean owned business. Two lovers point used to be a teenage hang out..with mini truck races..now all regulated tourism fees. Everything so expensive. I miss the drive around the island and stop at any fiesta and get invited to eat. Go to Merizo and score some homegrown from someones backyard.. No one cared..everybody was cool. Now my home is a small town of farmers in Oklahoma..about as close to old island style ranchers kind of people looking out for each other that I'm used to. I credit GUAM for teaching me to be humble, respectful, and appreciative.
Like the other commenter said, very expensive. I recommend visiting the site: "Numbeo" and looking at the individual costs of things here. For example: - Regular gas is like $5.20 right now, Premium is $5.60 and Diesel is $5.75 or so. - Average coffee: $6 - Cereal: $7 - Dozen Eggs: $4+ - Basic Unlimited Phone Data Plan: $60+ - 1 Person Average Meal: $13+ - McDonald's Happy Meal: $7 - 6 Pack Craft Beer: $14+ - 2 Bedroom Apartment: $1700 - Utilities: $400+ And so on... Once you pay your rent and utilities, there are some ways to live a bit cheaper (shop at Ross, buy only sale items, don't eat out, etc...) but still gonna cost you some money. You will probably spend $1000-1500 per person a month without rent.
And those who put them in the position should be held responsible, no? Guam's government appoints people for positions, but doesn't follow up with performance to see how well they are suited for the job.
People do not "choose" to be homeless because housing is too expensive. People ARE homeless because the rent is too damn high. It's kinda gross to complain there isn't enough people harassing the unhoused.
Your sentences basically mean the same thing... Some do choose to become homeless...especially because rent is too high. It';s the same situation state-side. Of course, some are also forced to become homeless because they can't cover the expenses. Also, many are homeless because there isn't enough space in "homeless shelters" or enough "support" to lend a helping hand to the struggling community. Bottom line is that there are numerous reasons why people are homeless. You can be stubborn and believe what you want.
You mean homeless. That's what they are Home less means without a home which makes them homeless. Let's get that straight. But there are other choices. You always have a choice. You may not like it but you have one. You don't have to be homeless. That's what trusting in God is for Putting youe tithes first so he takes care of you. That's what falling on your face in front of him on your knees in a deep heart conversation with him giving it all to him to say here take this I can't anymore. I don't know what to do but I trust you God. But people have turned from him so he's taken his protection off of them
I truly appreciate this video production. 🙏Yes, we don’t always follow the rules and have our struggles with nature as well. But we’re cool year round. And yes our local politics goes through its public processes of ills and thrills and vocal campaigns. DRONES (patrols) will eliminate those who don’t follow rules and will surely keep us all safe; especially our drinking water. 🤔 💭 🧐
Thanks a lot for watching and most importantly, adding to the discussion. I agree that there are very cool and chill people here just trying to enjoy life as well.
@@MattReardonVlogs yes that is one thing that irks me as well, like people who post comments like that lived more than a century ago when we are now a fourth of the way into the 21st century
I have heard your complaints from locals, not tourists, so you are quick to observe. With the military build-up, I wish they at least pass supplemental security income for those who are vulnerable and who really cannot help themselves as quickly without financial help. Yes, poor health care. One of my friends, originally from the States, came down ill from something incurable, lost his apartment, and returned. The medical care here is not adequate for something incurable like his, and it makes him depressed...but I heard something similar from someone local who went off the island to the Philippines to St. Luke Hospital for medical treatment. He cannot get here, unavailable, only to die and get buried, and they are both one of a kind.
The economy part is like Florida. The bad roads, trash, and abandoned cars are no problem here in Florida. I have a friend who moved from Florida to Guam and hates living there.
You don't see stray dogs here though and yes that's sad I see alot of dogs roaming around everywhere in the Philippines also, I just feel so bad for them because they look so malnourished.
That is true. Mostly because Animal Control captures and puts them down, or someone rescues them and then they become adopted. It's truly sad. I've seen it the worst in some SEA countries and Latin America
Island life is chill. Unfortunately, the reason for negative in Guam is for sure the government. The people need to open up their eyes and see who the governments priority is....themselves.
You pointed out many things in your video that have existed for many years and are still occurring. I think though before producing this video you should conduct your research to support your comments and then do your edits. Just a few short comments here and the rest you should investigate and do your research like a journalist for your next video. Read about the following to know more and provide a reference, no particular order: 1. Compact Aid to FSM 2. Military rental subsistence best known as OHA or BAH, this is a leading cause of high rental properties that locals are not able to compete with. As such, that’s one of two causes of extended families living together and homeless no longer affording to pay rent as many owner/ landlords want a higher yielding rental income. 3. This is a US nation wide situation, “it’s best to be unemployed or homeless” and it’s because the Government here make it easy for most who are dependent but equally able bodies and want to continue to live off welfare called Section 8, SNAP, WIC, ERA, etcetera. Unemployment is high as a result. 4. Stray dogs and cats are a problem for many, partly because of the cost is so expensive and those clinics that are conducted at the mayors office help but registration and surgeries are full that you have wait again for the next 3-4 months before another is provided. Veterinarian clinics cost more than $200 per pet. 5. Cost of construction here is high because many of the local workers are on contract with the Federal Government to build on the new Marine Base and in former Andy South in Pagat. So we are left with immigrant nationals brought in to construct and their sponsors charge a hefty labor cost due to housing and feeding them. Therefore they build $600k to $700k homes that military and Fed Employees can afford to purchase, most local people can’t afford those prices because of wages. 6. Many of the locals who graduate join the military to get away and provide a better life for them and their families. Study shows Guam has the highest per capita recruitment. Others who go to college to get degrees, most don’t come back because the pay is not in line with their profession and end up permanently residing in the US and abroad. Most of the other “things” you mentioned have substance and references to support why things are they way they are. I live here and see it. I get mixed emotions and feelings and see how absurd most things are. Unfortunately I’m not in a position to help make a change on things I can not control. It takes the people of Guam to make these changes collectively and for the betterment. All that said, do your research and hope your future videos will have more factual content that you can reference and provide better insight. Good luck on your next future videos. “That’s MY opinion.”
This is simply a travel log of where I go and what I see and sometimes with information videos...not a news channel or some big-name corporation outlet with 15+ employees. They are observations after some time of experiencing the island. And doing what you insist on referring to, means the video becomes longer and deeper filled with info that the average person will not fully comprehend. This is a summarization so viewers can easily digest what's being talked about. If you believe the information isn't factual, that's your belief. Others might say the opposite. And the comment section is where more "reference" comes in. Moreover, this allows viewers to get more curious and dive deeper. This video isn't titled: "A Deep Dive on 20 Things You Should Know and Why They Are The Way They Are". Now I understand it didn't suit your expectations, but that's fine because those are just your opinions and I don't have to side with them. Thanks for your comment
Appreciate your honesty! Guam sounds a LOT like St Croix u s v I … Corruption on a MASS level! Discrimination IGNORANCE on a MASS level! SMH but again , Medase’ Thank U 4 Your Honesty!🌞🌙✨🕯️
As a native of the island I will say that we recovered from Mawar faster then any other typhoon of the past. The government does its best for the people with what it has. COVID and the global crisis that it created still affects the island and continue to increase the price of groceries and everyday food required to live. As far as the drivers, we swerve because of all the potholes😂😂😂 35 is way too slow
I don't understand why Guam imports everything when they have the ocean all around. Should have really affordable seafood but it's not. They have small fishing boats but nothing big. Why? You would think the sea food industry would be a major industry there.
I'm sure there is some reason to it but it is true that you really don't see affordable seafood dining here. I mean even frozen fish sticks are $11 or more 😢
I can definitely attest to the bad drivers, I drive around Guam for a living and could create a whole youtube channel from all the bad drivers dashcam footage I have 😂
Welcome to Puerto Rico! Oh, sorry is Guam! Exactly the same problems from that island to the other one in the Caribbean…Are you sure you were not in Puerto Rico??😂😂😂
Hahaha you know what...I was thinking that the problems might be similar as that's what my family with Puerto Rican ties said. Although, supplies and stuff would get to puerto Rico much faster! 😂
It’s not. Philippines is over populated and can barely feed its people. Too many people everywhere in metro Manila. Guam is under populated and density is comfortable and relaxing.
And you didn't even mention the frogs coming out, to warm themselves on the coral based roads. I shall name you, "Squishy" 100 times over and over again. :P
Okay bro I respect your TH-cam channel and everything I give you props. But in Guam the natives here just simply love our island. We will die here, island time is definitely something Americans and pretty much any country has to get used to.
I agree! Island time isn’t for everyone. Guam is a beautiful island and if the Natives want it to be better in any way, they all must keep pushing for an even better tomorrow (not saying they don’t) but we all know Guam needs to fix a few things.
You're on an island. All islands are like what you describe. If you want the American lifestyle and luxuries then you need to go to the States. How well do you think life is in the states? With all the crime, mass killings, millions of homeless, the drug problems, the social problems, the inequalities; you segregate your Native Americans on to reservations and keep their Native blood percentages so you can deny them funding and take their land. I can keep going. America is no better nor is it perfect. Realize where you're at and don't complain. Government of Guam serves the NATIVES first as it should. The US Government only gives Government of Guam just enough like they're dogs waiting for the next scrap to fall off the table. They don't want to pay for all the immigrants they allow on the island along with infrastructure and welfare that comes with them. The U.S. treats the island as an ownership. They can change local laws and they destroy the culture and environment. They only care about the military presence to protect the U.S. mainland. Inflation is though the roof, and always has been, because of the Jones Act. Yet the U.S. wants the Natives to struggle so they will leave the island and they won't have opposition when they want to run their military operations. They build bases on sacred Native land and can care less what the Natives think. They take ownership (steal) of the island water supply and have the nerve to sale that water back to the Natives. FACTS! Chamorros are good people who have been colonized since the 1500's when the first Europeans arrived. It's never been the same since.
Not disagreeing with you nor am I complaining where I’m at. I’ve enjoyed the island life for what it has to offer. I know Island life is tough no matter what. The things I’ve mentioned are to help others know more about the island before visiting. Locals know about it and so do Americans living there. Remember, Americans are mixed people of foreign descent, therefore it’s a worldly problem. But yes, unfortunately todays governments and nations either push indigenous people away, allow outsiders to disrupt their way of living, or protect them completely. It’s a tough world in the end.
@@vegasranger Wrong. Anyone born in a place is a native of that place, regardless of race. To claim otherwise is to simply use the word wrong and is racist. Your tribalistic way of thought only creates resentment among people. This "I was here first" mentality is absurd. People come, people go, blood is shed, life is conceived, property is exchanged, culture changes. The only thing that have absolute claim to the land are the rocks; it's arrogant to think otherwise.
@@MattReardonVlogs I liked your video, having been to Guam I feel it's accurate however, if you have never been in the military, I find it impossible for you to understand the life, struggles and hardship within the military. It's not an ordinary 9 to 5 job. Things that people call entitled are earned. I bet people that say such things have never had to work 16-hour days for weeks/months at a time, be deployed away from their family for 6 -8 months at a time. Then have to be deployed again in just 2 months. I bet they never had their freedoms taken away, but free go where ever they want. And the majority do it a minimum wage. I'm retired military and I earned every damn entitlement given to me.
Sp your saying military are entitled? I think you need to re check yourself considering they work long 12hr shifts sometimes and they get deployed some times at a comments notice and they live in harsh conditions even here on base anywhere in the us with their families covered in mold. Black mold. Lot of them are living on WIC and food stamps. They are out there fighting for your freedom to open your mouth and say stupid rude things about our service members and you have the audacity to call them entitled. You have no clue what military families go thru. Their lives are uphevealed all the time. A lot of military children are diagnosed with adhd and autism because of the lifestyle. The point is ita the least they can do is give military members and their families cheaper groceries. Not the military fault because everything's expensive. I'm so tired of these islands sell themselves short and given into greed and not caring enough about their own island that they allow all this. Hawaii took in homeless people from Cali Oregon and Washington because their government paid the governor David Ige tons of money to take them off their hands. The philipines does the same thing and brings in tons of casinos from the Chinese because they want more money. These islands don't think they can survive don't stand up and fight and give in and give their island up and let it become this way. Don't blame the military blame the islands government. It's the same with Taiwan and Puerto Rico too. Stop blaming others and take responsibility for your weakness. Your government did this. What happened to farming? What did the chimorrians do before the military for food and supplies? It was probably expensive then too. Get up off your butts and do something. Vote , clean up protest do something but stop complaining about the us military.

I agree totally on everything you have mention! You speak the truth and I pray that the government would step up and follow through on fixing it
I'm Chamorro, born and raised on Guam, and then I moved to Hawaii for college. I came back after 14 years, in 2019. I was on the island during typhoon Mawar. I have to say, this is the most honest review of Guam I've encountered. I have to agree with pretty much everything said. Thank you for the honest review.
Hopefully things will improve in the future because as we all know, this island has a ton of beauty
But, I think it's very difficult for many people to live here long-term if they are not form here
Agreed but the water was 82’ at 2AM and at 2PM.
I used to live in Guam back in the late 80s and love it there.
I love the island, the greenery and the beach.
Hahaha and the same still happens on the island
That’s because the US has completely F%#ked the place.
What about the inside corruption of the family governments? Are they straight and clean? Even if US had no role on the island, the place wouldn't be much better either way. Look at any small Pacific Island that isn't fully run by tourism

I think Is very interesting video, i'd like to take a trip to Guam, maybe this year. Thanks a lot. From Colombia, South America.
Hola...bienvenidos a Guam. Deberias visitar algun dia! :)
I love Colombia I'd like to visit Guam to compare the two
Hit the nail right on the head! I'm local and still on island I appreciate the honesty definitely a military and tourist destination and locals get the shit end of the stick.
Unfortunately! It is quite a beautiful tourist destination. Hopefully more people from around the world will visit over the years to come
The reason the tourists areas look like they do is because the tourist areas cater to people from mainly Japan.
Exactly! Tourists should be welcomed as long as they can enjoy it respectfully
Right! I believe you explained it pretty well for anyone who wants to understand better in simple terms. Thanks!
Since the military has set up shop on these people’s island and it has caused so much strife maybe they should have some kind of employment for the natives of the island. While it may not be intentional, the presence of the military is having a negative effect for the natives.
Thanks for sharing your honest observations about Guam. It brought back memories for me and my husband. 😍
Right some valuable information to add.
It's amazing how on point you are despite only staying on Guam a couple months! 🤯🙌👍
Well although I was there just for a few months, I think a lot is evident (maybe more than it was pre-typhoon). Hopefully things change.

Wherever you go, dogs that attack people get put down; if not by an official animal control group, then by the locals. Do Guamanians not do this?
That's the reality of it but at least we can still enjoy it where and when we can! 😊
Yeah I used to live in Guam for 4 years. You have to be careful driving in Guam because the road is very it's very slippery specially when is raining.
Very true...plus lights are very dim or not working in some areas
Thank you very for your honesty
Hope someone can take some points of info from it. Cool place to visit and experience no matter wht
The military isn’t making the price of things go up, it’s the shipping … most 95% of import is shipped from the United States , it’s a maritime law basically… they won’t allow china to ship things there … so , inflation etc
yes Jones Act
@@MattReardonVlogs but when the U.S. government is involved, things are higher.
@@MattReardonVlogs …Yeah we will be back later this year for American food and American stores.

You know what, I think that is a great idea! Good idea! I hope something like this happens one day

I’ve been there many times just because of my family trip. It is one of the most beautiful islands. Later I hope to live there for a few months.
It is very beautiful! All islands usually are in the region. Hopefully you can come back soon

I lived in South Fin in Dededo and went to JFK High School in the early 90s, and I got to experience Typhoon Omar and the earthquake that measured 7.0 to 8.3 🤔
(Hard to remember, been long time) now to take my kids and wife to show her how I grew up.
Wow! I've only felt little shakes from miles away but it can be scary

Yes, do it. For sure! Especially the real beauty here.
Transiting Japan via Narita it is about 1500 round with United from DEN.
$1500 one way ticket from Florida….
Thank you, bro! I live in Guam, and you nailed almost every fact about Guam.
Glad to hear that
Not sure I agree with you that the Military is responsible for higher prices.
One thing for sure is that corruption causes a lot of problems here and forces locals to suffer more than they should
lol when talking about driving you see a red car going through the grass in the background!

fabulous
I was there in1990-1991 you should have seen it then!! Love it there but way to costly to live there.
It really is. How was it back in the early 90s?
I didn’t know anything about Guam until your video. So sad to see and it’s US Territory. Is it as beautiful as Hawaii?
While ya it’s expensive with the Jones act, maybe a possible exception could be made to create competition and lower prices, and maybe more air cargo to elevate the travel time
I agree! We will see what happens over these next few years as things seem to be changing fast worldwide.
Until they change their minds and become a state they don't get that right. Follow the constitution. Sorry that's their government for ya. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Lucky for you. I drove half the island on Monday and there were 3 accidents around 11am. I don't know what people do to drive so bad.
@MattReardonVlogs me to ... coz most of those times that I was there driving, either I was in a hurry because I need to get to work on time or I was very tired coming from partying or hiking. Lucky in deed .. or maybe just alert enough 🤣
Interesting. Here in Puerto Rico we have the same problems. I guess it’s a colony thing.

Yeah that is true for sure. Do you miss it?
Wow sounds like a pretty good upbringing!
Is it expensive in Guam?
@wildcat. Yess! It's very expensive in Guam. Most items and food are exported from another country.
@@MiasGrandma8578 thanks
Like the other commenter said, very expensive. I recommend visiting the site: "Numbeo" and looking at the individual costs of things here. For example:
- Regular gas is like $5.20 right now, Premium is $5.60 and Diesel is $5.75 or so.
- Average coffee: $6
- Cereal: $7
- Dozen Eggs: $4+
- Basic Unlimited Phone Data Plan: $60+
- 1 Person Average Meal: $13+
- McDonald's Happy Meal: $7
- 6 Pack Craft Beer: $14+
- 2 Bedroom Apartment: $1700
- Utilities: $400+
And so on... Once you pay your rent and utilities, there are some ways to live a bit cheaper (shop at Ross, buy only sale items, don't eat out, etc...) but still gonna cost you some money. You will probably spend $1000-1500 per person a month without rent.

It really is beautiful but the trash situation is a sad reality. Some people can't respect the land and dispose of things properly
Same as here in the mainland , I think they are all corrupt!!!
Yes, unfortunately!
This is why Guam is Guam. Unqualified people placed in positions that they can't preform

That's what they are
Home less means without a home which makes them homeless. Let's get that straight. But there are other choices. You always have a choice. You may not like it but you have one. You don't have to be homeless. That's what trusting in God is for
Putting youe tithes first so he takes care of you. That's what falling on your face in front of him on your knees in a deep heart conversation with him giving it all to him to say here take this I can't anymore. DRONES (patrols) will eliminate those who don’t follow rules and will surely keep us all safe; especially our drinking water. 🤔 💭 🧐
Thanks a lot for watching and most importantly, adding to the discussion. I agree that there are very cool and chill people here just trying to enjoy life as well.
and with all that said it’s still better than having the Spaniards and Japanese there
And you're talking about Spaniards & Japanese from more than a century ago.
Not complaints, but more of observations. And that's right, as the title states, most tourists probably don't know...
The economy part is like Florida. The bad roads, trash, and abandoned cars are no problem here in Florida. I have a friend who moved from Florida to Guam and hates living there.
Understandable for sure. I've lived in both too. Florida has more perks.
Can’t compare a literal island to the STATE of Florida let’s be real lol
I’m planning on moving to Guam from Daytona Beach FL. You think it would be a mistake?
If you are asking me,@@Crunchykyle, my answer is only move there if you have a contract with the government or are a serviceman.
Where did you live?

Island life is chill. Unfortunately, the reason for negative in Guam is for sure the government. The people need to open up their eyes and see who the governments priority is....themselves.
Yep you said it
Wait what??? The government never does what they say or promise!??? lol just kidding. Great video man!
Hahaha thanks for watching
You pointed out many things in your video that have existed for many years and are still occurring. I think though before producing this video you should conduct your research to support your comments and then do your edits. Just a few short comments here and the rest you should investigate and do your research like a journalist for your next video.
Read about the following to know more and provide a reference, no particular order:
1. Compact Aid to FSM

Island time is OK for some things but not when it comes to safety that's just another word for LAZY

Yeah maybe many military people wouldn't say so but it's the real honest truth.
