  • Come along for a hike with my weird but wonderful Sputnik Stereo camera, a soviet film camera that takes two pictures at the same time to give a 3D view! Due to the way the stereoscopic process works the effect of these pictures is quite hard to share, so in this video I will show you two ways of sharing these pictures: As red blue anaglyphs that require 3D glasses and as 3D images that can be shared on Facebook.

    Great Video, and one of the few about the Sputnik camera. I was lucky enogh to get a broken one over ebay for around 50€. Repaired the shutter, aligned the lenses, syncronized the sharpness and aperture. I found a good/cheap way to adjust the camera is to use photographic paper directly in the camera as sheet film negative(shot at ISO 4-6). The contact prints from this paper negatives (or from the 120-Film Negatives) can be viewed directly with the stereo viewer that your have presented in your video.

    That Sputnik is a wonderful camera - takes a lot of getting used to, though. It is the combination of depth perception with directional modelling of light that makes a great stereo picture. The ultimate is a stereo picture that tells a story. I reckon you’re on your way. 👍

    Nice video! We also have been in self isolation for year and a half and, yes, it is super hard experience.
    I love my soviet Zorkiy (grandpa's), Fed, Moskva, they are super nostalgic, but cameras quality varies from one piece to another. At the same time, it is an opportunity to try some amazing (and cheap) soviet lenses like Jupiter, Orion, Industar and so on.
    Thank you a lot for the links as well!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you enjoyed it Vera! Self isolation is tough for sure! Did you at least get to go out to take pictures where you are? It varies a lot depending on how crowded the surroundings are. Some of my friends manage plenty of photo walks, others are restricted like me with too overpopulated surroundings!
      The quality of the lenses is definitely a bit hit and miss with the Soviet cameras. My Jupiter-12 is sharp and nice, but my Jupiter-8 is misaligned and wonky. I definitely enjoy the lenses more than the cameras! I keep breaking my fingernails on the stiff forwarding dials, this Sputnik is super stiff as well! The rewind fell off my Horizon which seems to be a common problem. They do work for the most part though and I love some of the pictures I’m getting with them! Very nostalgic for me as well! I wish I could have repaired my mum’s old Lubitel!

    Hi Lily, really good to see you again, ‘hello’ ! I remember when I was very young my parents used to bring those cardboard glasses home for me to play with after going to the cinema. They were issued to the audiences to watch certain films.

      @LillySchwartz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hei Roy, good to hear from you too! Ah yes, 3D movies that used red blue glasses used to be quite the rage! I find them far more fatiguing than the current 3D movie technology though, I remember getting a massive headache from them. Much better just for looking at single images! I do alright with the current 3D movie glasses, but we don‘t have a cinema here that shows 3D movies. It was something I used to do regularly when I lived in Berlin! You stay safe too, Roy! How are things going in your area?

      Thank you for replying Lily. I live in the South East of England. Things appear to be getting back to normal although we are constantly reminded about the risk of COVID. I like to do my street photography in Canterbury Kent. The place is crowded with visitors of all nationalities. Cafes and shops are well attended. We now are having a third COVID jab; Mamiya Super 23’s, so far, are excluded!!! God alone knows, if it will ever go back, entirely, to what it was; not in all cases a bad thing! Mind you it is better!
      Carry on Lily we all missed you!

      Ah yes, I follow how things are going in the UK because I used to live down in Brighton. For the moment it seems like Brexit and shortages seem to be causing loads of trouble beyond all the covid stuff, it’s weird to watch from the outside! Here we still see plenty of masking which is good and it kinda seems doubtful that it’s going to go back to how it was. The crazy tourists perhaps, but not the locals? I barely just got my first 2 jabs last month so it’s not yet time for my booster!
      I’ll try to keep the videos coming more frequently now that tourist season is over. Should be less crowded in the woods so I might be able to film there! Fingers crossed 😀

      Yeah, Brighton was fun for a while, but of course silly expensive too. I miss it quite a bit at times. But then I remember the iffy housing situation where you pay a small fortune for a room in a mould infested shared house with shoddy heating and then I shake my head about nostalgia 😅 it’s a great place for music though, that’s for sure!
      I’m fairly certain I can keep the videos coming now, and if it’s by keeping a dynamic mic in the shot! I’ve got plenty of stuff prefilmed, so it’s really just the talking head bits that are giving me trouble with all the construction noise!

    Sputnik is a great camera. When the interior is flocked, lenses cleaned, light seals installed and used with hoods it can deliver very nice photos. Sharpness is acceptable at small apertures and the pictures look very pleasant with nice soft colors and almost artistic touch. I shoot medium format stereo with Mamiya TLR set up with professional grade lenses and Sputnik and I prefer Sputnik.

Doing the usual connect the dots as I have a lot of them already, but with my tree it's like a gigantic ball of twine and I have connections going all over the place!! I prefer not to investigate 😜 my husband has traced his family to Italy for passport reasons. He looked up the village where his - I think - great grandparents were from and the phone book is funny: half great grandma’s last name and the other half great grandpa’s last name 😂 Oops 😅 Untangling that mess would be quite the job I think 🤔

    I got my first russian camera a couple months ago, a Zorki 4k. I agree they can be frustrating, as mine ripped the film right off the reel on my first shoot.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My first Russian camera was a Zorki too, a Zorki 3C! I struggled with the forwarding dial a while then decided to go with a 4K too and they all shred film, my Horizon as well! What I’ve learned: Shoot film with thicker base! HP5+ or Tri-X works well, but Kentmere, RPX or APX not so much. Also difficult: Delta 3200! Shot 2 rolls, 2 shredded, so not trying that again 😂 It also happens more on humid days or when it’s really cold outside because then the base gets brittle. It happens because Soviet film canisters had a slightly different size. It used to annoy me a lot because Kentmere used to be all I could afford when I shot my Zorkis! They do take nice pictures when they don’t shred the film though 😅

    • @cakeytea
      @cakeytea 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LillySchwartz I was quite lucky with the roll it shredded. I felt it go weird and immediately thought "I've ripped this". I unloaded it in the dark and the lab were able to process it, only a big scratch over 2 or 3 frames. I've shot tri-x in there fine, haven't tried any more yet. I've got a roll of Rollei Super Pan I'm thinking of shooting it with.
      I originally wanted a 3c, I like the look of the front dial. I may still end up buying a body and using the later Jupiter lens that came with the 4k.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Jupiter that came with my 3C was misaligned sadly, so I keep shooting the Jupiter-12 I got with the 4K too or an Industar a friend gave me. Keep in mind that more of the frame will end up on the sprockets with the 3C. Some of the 4Ks were meant for export, so they work a bit better with our canisters, usually the ones without the Cyrillic. They still tear the film, but at least most of the frame is where it’s supposed to be? I haven’t shot anything but RPX from the Rollei lineup in it, so can’t predict whether it’ll break or not. Carefully forwarding helps a bit too, although not always?

      @@LillySchwartz my 4k is in Latin, so definitely an export model. The fames seem to be fine on the reel so far. That's a shame about the 50. My range finder was out when I got it, but it was reasonably easy to fix.
      I'm hoping to get some other Jupiter lenses, but I think I'll also need a finder for the top. All in good time though, I'm in no rush. Looking forward to shooting it again some time.

      Well done on managing to fix it. I think mine is still a touch out, but never really bothered to get it accurate. I might just have a go at restoring the thing properly at some point. I haven’t really shot it much ever since I got my Leica though. It takes the lenses and is just so much smoother in general.

    Anyone can see the stereo pictures by the crossing eyes technique.
    I take stereo pictures using a plate camera Jules Verascope from 1913 :)

    Eww, who steals masks? :D Love the video, esp the bit of history at the beginning. Where are these trails, looks like a great spot.

      Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah, those masks were stolen before use obviously and this was right at the beginning of the pandemic when there were none. My parents sent us a package and someone stole the masks and gloves right out of it. So much for humanity 🤷‍♀️ anyway, a dear friend made us some masks and sent them in a letter and they luckily got through! Meant a lot!
      The trails are in the Basque Country on the Spanish side! The countryside around here is very pretty! Tough to hike because of the mountains, but the vistas are very much worth it!

    When i was a kid in Soviet Russia i had parts of this camera scattered around the house! Still have no idea why it was disassemled

      Now that’s mysterious! Maybe it didn’t work correctly and someone took it apart to repair the shutter? On mine one of the shutters sometimes sticks.

      Did he have a darkroom too? My mum was the one who was into photography when she was younger and my grandma enlarged the pictures for her in the kitchen.

      Seems like a fairly accurate description 😂 to be fair they did a fairly good job of herding us in the right direction and leaving us little space to avoid the needles 🙃 it was quite well organised! The name in the press was genius too: “vacunódromo” 😉

      I first was wondering what is Russian witch house music, thought it is some old folk Baba Yaga music, then had to listen to it ;)

      Wild, I had no idea Russian witch house existed! I definitely need to listen to more, what I just heard sounded as if Burial and early 2K goth had a baby, fascinating 😅
      Glad you enjoyed the little excursion into stereo photography. I love oddball cameras like that!

      @@LillySchwartzOf course it exist! It is called a hut on chicken legs and it is standing in the deep dark wood! Baba Yaga is living there. If you come to this house and say: Hey, hut, turn to me with the front and to the forest with the back - it will do as you said! If you are a good hero and have a reasonable request and good communication skills the , Witch, Baba Yaga may help you!

    If you had a VR headset, or used one of those ones that use your phone, then you can view these as 3d photos that way. There's a certain apps that will put one photo in each eye to achieve the 3D affect.

      Sadly all the VR stuff gives me motion sickness. It works really well with the viewer thingy that was included with it, just means I need to make contact prints.
