  • This time I show you what photography was like for me here in Spain during the lockdown and share some attempts at making self-portraits. For this I use my Rolleicord with instax film and my Speed Graphic with 4x5 film. Challenging but very cool! The result was published in the Quarantine Zine, a lovely community project over on Twitter! I hope you enjoy it!
    Here some time-stamps in case you are as easily distracted as I am 😉

    I had the same problem with the bulb shutter release not fitting my crown graphic, but I actually got it to work with a little finessing! Took off the lens board and attached it to the lens, then reattached to camera being careful not to force it too much, but still have it well attached. And it worked great! No leaks or issues on the final image. Not ideal, but in a pinch might work. Great video and great self portrait!

      Thank you for the tip Tony, I had no idea it would fit like that and still work! Didn’t look like it would work, so I didn’t even try until just now. With the bulb release attached the lock doesn’t even need as much force as some of my 3D printed lens boards. Great solution! I’ll pin your comment in case anyone else runs into the same problem! Thanks again!

      My pleasure! Crazy that they wouldn’t make a smaller profile attachment for a more universal fit, but then I guess maybe not all large format shooters are attempting self shooting?

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonysebastianukpo8824 I also thought it was an odd design choice, but all the bulb releases have that thick end, which makes me wonder whether it’s got to be this big to make it work over such a long distance? The mechanism definitely has its downsides. It isn’t strong enough to release my Mamiya C220 either. And yes, self-portraits on large format are definitely a bit of a niche use case 😂

    Yes, you definitely took the picture! It's about the brain behind the picture, so surely it's your work! Great picture from the 4x5 and that 3D-printed instax film folder was such a brilliant idea! Hope that things could return to normal soon and everyone could all be outdoors taking amazing photos. Stay safe :)

      Also, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to go outdoors during this strange time. Health is always our no.1 priority and if everyone could follow the lockdown rules like you do we could win this battle sooner. :)

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Tianjiao! That’s also how I see it! I think the 4x5 shot turned out really lovely! I’m always amazed by how smooth things stay even when I push the film a lot! I also hope that things can get back to a certain level of normality so that we creative people can get back to work properly. I really feel for my musician friends too, who can’t perform and have lost the entire festival season now. And agreed, I still find it quite uncomfortable out there. It has become better though, not because I have gotten more used to it, but because we now have a general mask mandate in all public spaces, even where distances can be maintained. That makes it so much safer for me already to be outdoors and it reminds people that things are still far from normal. Before the mask mandate they could just feel as if things were back to normal and that they could take unnecessary risks. It freaked me out that everyone just behaved as if this was over. I wish it was, but our second outbreak shows that it’s not, sadly. We’ll me it through this together though, taking care and protecting each other! Thanks for watching and your kind words! ✨Stay safe!

      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad! That’s always my aim, make it so that everyone can enjoy it, not just the tech and gear obsessed people among us! This video was definitely a bit of a change of pace, since most of my pictures can’t be as elaborate to set up, since I mostly work with what I find outside. It seems people enjoy watching me work though, my point of view photography videos always do well too!
      And yeah, cabin fever, tell me about it! Although lockdown wasn’t too bad for me. The time after, a lot worse since our building administration decided to redo the exterior of the building with some government stimulus money. It’s been more than a month of drilling and hammering 😱 I’m glad you’re staying safe!

    Hey Lilly! Another great video, amazing detail you shared on the indoor project!
    It's of course your photograph! You you did all the set-up, but I must you have an excellent assistant, seems like he took your direction very well judging by the outcome. :-) Self Portrait? I think so, same reasons.
    I too have a speed graphic, mine doesn't get the use it deserves, you've inspired me to get it out and mabe shoot some photographs with it!
    I'm glad to hear things are getting more normal there and that you and your husband are doing well!
    Thanks again for sharing, I look forward to the next video!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hei Dean! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video! And yes, I agree with you, it’s my picture and a self-portrait 😀 I really don’t understand the nitpicking with Cindy Sherman’s work where she’s considered the author but they aren’t self-portraits? Very odd.
      The Speed Graphic is such a cool camera, I really like it a lot! I tend to use it outdoors normally, but it’s heavy, so for the project I’m working on in the mountains I’m first scouting with different lighter cameras and then I bring the Speed Graphic to get the picture I want, since carrying 7kg up a mountain when I don’t even know whether I’m going to find anything seems a bit too much 😂 it really gets heavy, because I use projection lenses too! I guess, that’s the limitation. I do love the format and the look though!
      Thanks again for watching, and stay safe! ✨

    Here from the US we are going on our fifth month of weak lockdown and numbers are getting much worse again because so many people aren't taking the recommendations seriously at all. Glad things got better in Spain. Your life is definitely worth saving!
    I've had the same question about the "self-portrait" distinction; the strict rules seem ridiculous. Great photo! I might go for the same kind of project. Thanks for the video.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words Quinn!
      Yes, it’s so weird that they make such a strange distinction! If Cindy Sherman is the author it’s of course also a self-portrait if it’s a picture of herself? Otherwise she wouldn’t be the author either? Very odd and bordering on French philosophy 🙃
      And well, one week later things already look quite bad again here. 10% of the population in Spain is already in lockdown again, there are travel warnings from other countries and so on. Where we are they now have a strict masks everywhere rule because there are several big outbreaks in the region. Masks even at the beach and fines if people don’t wear any. They are still trying to prevent a second lockdown here, but it seems like things are getting out of hand again anyway. I’m expecting to be in lockdown again in 2 weeks, so I’m taking the cameras into the woods as often as I can risk it! Maybe I’ll have to make a second lockdown self-portrait in the end? And I definitely recommend a project like this if you’re struggling to take pictures in lockdown. Challenging enough to keep busy for a while!

    Lordy! Makes me appreciate the freedoms of Florida. My job takes me into homes all all day making sure they stay operational so I was able to continue working and take photos on the road when we had a light version of martial law that ended in May. I probably would have ended up in jail, no way I could have stayed sane and stuck in a home that long without getting out and doing photography or just anything!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get that, there are people who don’t handle being stuck at home /confined well. Quite a lot of people were fined here and every day there were news of people ending up in jail for breaking the rules 5 times or more. A lot of the life here happens on the street so people were struggling a lot with the strict rules. Personally with my health history it’s not the first time I couldn’t go out for a longer period of time, although this was probably the worst and the strictest time.
      I have lots of stuff I can do inside though! I was mainly just practicing the bass, playing music and that helped a lot. By the end I was very much at the edge though. Surprisingly I actually missed trees far more than people. The first times outside we couldn’t yet go to the forest since it was too far away. I only started to feel less on edge after that restriction ended too!
      I’m glad you managed to get some photography done throughout it all! It would have been far easier if we had had the German or British style lockdown where one could still go for walks and hikes. I’m ok with how it went though, it really brought the number of cases down much quicker and meant that I was safer throughout the worst of it.

    Good job with the Quarantine Zine thing!
    Being told that the life you had is no more because of a virus is a very hard thing on our mental status, good to see you in what looks like a good mental shape!
    I decided to simplify things, whenever I go to the recycling place to throw away the plastics, paper, and metals I bring my camera and document my surroundings, these are in no way the best pictures I taken, instead, they are my reality and that is what is important during these times!
    Don't let people get to you with their negative thoughts, every country does things differently and I not want to compare "country x vs country y" and accuse you of things!
    I am also not in the risk group so I have an advantage there but I am still careful to not be that person that ruins the progress of my countries battle with the virus!
    Keep up the good work!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Sina! Yeah, I'm doing a bit better now that lockdown is over! We're now in the middle of a second outbreak though, so we now have a mask mandate everywhere, which makes me feel a bit safer, but at the same time not as safe because of the new outbreak. It's always one step forward two steps back, very unsettling. And yes, every country handles it differently, some worse, some better, but it's difficult for all of us everywhere, even for those who are not so much at risk!
      My new routine is to go into the forest every now and then, which makes me feel better. I avoid the streets at the moment even though ironically there are now more people with masks on the street than in the forest. There is no winning. I'm slightly more optimistic though!

    • @SinaFarhat
      @SinaFarhat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LillySchwartz Good to hear that you have the forest for your feel good place!
      Also regarding the "right vs wrong" methods of dealing with the virus, nobody has the "correct" answers and we will probably only know in about two years when the reports are collected and looked at in a objective way!
      Until the day we can get to go back to work, we have to take care of each other!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s definitely true! Places that are now almost without cases or with a low number of deaths might just have a big outbreak later because people feel too safe there. I think we’ll only know in a couple years what proved effective and what didn’t. It might just average out in the end, who knows. It makes me so sad that for example Argentina is doing so badly now when it was doing so well for a while. I had high hopes. But well, people get tired of the measures and then outbreaks happen anyway, even when the country had strict policies to begin with. We just have to keep each other safe now and try to do our best to take care of each other!

      Businesses handling things like that is a bit mad. Here they closed the clubs and the clubs sued the government. The judge declared they could open again. And on that same weekend there was a big outbreak in two clubs. The government actually had to declare a state of emergency just to overturn the court ruling. one other tip, if you have the "single sheet holder" for the rollei, use the Ilford contact printing papar, there is some special printing paper you can not only develop in contact printing, but use in a camera to, just like the wet plate glass positives, but also with alternate processes (Kalitype, and others ) on normal print paper stock, you coat the paper, develop, then print.OR this is a great moment to try glass plates, as these are a direct fit into these holders ( single glass fits, but to do paper, you need a "septum"- akin to those metal holders inside the Grafmatic holder, this adapts the smaller negative size to the plate size).

    Great work! These are definitely your photographs. On a conceptual level, they are 100 percent yours, and they wouldn't exist on any level even if your husband had just pushed a shutter at some point. Gregory Crewdson has entire bodies of work where he only tells someone to push a shutter by radio while he is directing elsewhere.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, Jamie! I think it can get even more confusing if you add one more layer. If I built a robot to press the shutter, would it be the robot’s picture? Only if it was conscious? Or not even then, like you suggest? I find it strange that with Cindy Sherman they are considered her pictures, but not self-portraits. If it’s hers conceptually why not a self-portrait? It kinda shows how weird things get when more than one person is involved. My brother recently had trouble crediting a movie, because normally the director is credited, but in that particular movie the producer did the main conceptual work. I think it’s quite interesting as a problem. In a way I think all photographs are a collaboration and I happily credit my husband’s help with this particular picture! 😀

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, what a fascinating problem your brother encountered! And I think collaboration is great, and that reminds me of a favorite photographer "Guzman," who is actually a husband and wife team who started going by the name so they wouldn't have to explain the collaboration or how they really didn't pay attention to who actually pressed the shutter. Also, people sure like dissecting Cindy Sherman's work for her ... I consider them self-portraits, though I am not completely sure they are all portraits. Self-conceptualization? ha.

    I have to be careful too when I go out, since I'm diabetic and have some other underlying health problems. Too risky not to protect yourself and I always wear a mask. Anyway, that was a creative way of keeping the instax steady for the 4x5. Might be a good project to think about to come up with an instax/polaroid back that you can 3D print and have it work like a normal instax/polaroid camera!! Like the backs for some cameras such as the Mamiya Press camera and RB/RZ series cameras.

      I’m glad you’re staying safe out there! It’s rough out there for us risk group folks.
      I have been thinking about a conversion like the one you speak of, but other people have tried to make backs like that and they usually failed to match the film plane and had to recalibrate the camera which is something I’d want to avoid. Most of these projects also involve donor instax electronics because just rollers don’t seem to allow for even development. Donor electronics are definitely an option but it automatically leads to the film plane problems, because of the size of that mechanism. I’m still thinking about it, but so far using it like regular sheet film seemed like the best option. Not super convenient or instant, but a nice workaround!

      One of the ways I get around things like shopping is to have mine delivered. I just go online and order through the local supermarket via their online store. They then deliver it at the time I choose. If you have anything like that at home, it might be something to try out.
      On one of the photography YT channels I subscribe to, the person that has the channel (Jess Hobbs) used a kit provided by a website (can't remember the name, offhand) to hack an Impossible Instant Lab and rigged it to take piccies and print them using her RB67 S-Pro camera. I don't think they make the kit anymore, but it'd be interesting to find out (or figure out) how they did it.

      @@carltanner9065 my husband actually does the shopping, because they don’t really do the home delivery online. They have you go to the shop and then deliver it to your door. A bit pointless.
      There used to be a few such backs and products by lomography that used instax film. At some point they took them out of production and then they became impossible to find. There used to be an instax back for the Lomo Belair and that one even had crank development. Never managed to get my hands on one though! If I had a broken instax camera I’d certainly try to cobble something together but I don’t believe in ripping perfectly good cameras apart for parts. I found a really cheap one in Japan once, but this was at the beginning of the pandemic and they just stopped all postal services to Spain then. Yeah, I've seen similar backs and attachments online as well. Some, now, are as rare as hen's teeth. Though, what I find is if I troll around the online stores like eBay and such, I sometimes come across all sorts of goodies that seem to just turn up when I'm not particularly looking for something in mind. It's like if you don't deliberately look for them, they just turn up for you. if you do go looking for them, they're like the two dollar coin you try to grab and they just dig their way deeper down into your bag/wallet etc. Like they try to run away from you :P You have to be quick with them, sometimes, because it seems everyone else wants the same thing as you do!!!

    lilly, the 4x5" was a good choice for this picture; of oneself, as you designed it, so it is yours!; and I say good choice, as mostly people on youtube say that when it comes to metering, you can PULL the highlights back, but not the shadows, so this would give more latitude to this dark shot, also remember these cameras' apature blades go down as far as f45/f64, so you could stop down if the projector is too bright, keeping the shadow image of yourself, and if you metered for yourself, then the meters' tendency of 18% grey would work in your favor!!- bringing up the exposure, and you can under-develop to recover the highlights in the projected image in the darkroom later on.

    While you needed assistance to check focus and press the shutter it is 100% your picture as it is your vision. To a greater and lesser extent artists from Warhol to Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha etc figured out that art is not necessarily embedded in the physical production of the picture. I definitely agree with you! Nevertheless in Kubric's film the camera operator is still credited. There just aren't really such distinctions made in photography. I'd say the rule of "it's only a self-portrait if you youself press the shutter" is absolute bollocks and should be abolished. :D No-one ever considers photographer's assistant to be the real author, so why should that be the case with the self-portraits? The little action of pressing the shutter isn't what really matters in photography, so I say that your photo is definitely a self-portrait.

    If he had no input other than pushing the shutter it’s yours. If he moved it to his taste it’s his. I would consider him as the timed shutter that arrived late. Haha Omar, that’s quite the analogy! Seems about right though! And no, he didn’t move it. • @AdrianBacon
    @AdrianBacon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m not much one for rules either. You originated the picture in your head and the picture wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t do the work to set it up, so it’s your picture, and since it’s your picture taken of you, it’s a self portrait. The whole who pushed the shutter button thing is baloney in my opinion. Assistants would get way more credit and fame for awesome photos because they’re often tripping the shutter while the photographer is holding something in frame or doing some execution and doesn’t have enough hands to trip the shutter themselves. It’s just people trying to make things way more complicated than it needs to be in my opinion.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! I think it’s all done a bit more fairly in the movie industry, where everyone gets their credit for what they actually did. In some forms of staged photography whoever pressed the shutter release is really irrelevant since the author remains the person who originated the picture, but assistants don’t get credited even when a picture had a movie set crew behind it. That’s not really right either.
      I think it becomes even more complicated when we bring in candid photography. I mean, what if Henri Cartier-Bresson didn’t actually push the shutter button in the decisive moment? That would thoroughly discredit his genius wouldn’t it? Not in the case of a staged photograph like this though. I think it’s a really interesting question! Somehow it also reminds me of the photographer who sued for copyright of a selfie that a monkey took with that photographer’s camera! Considering how much AI is now involved in cameras we’re headed for some very strange copyright lawsuits 🤣

    • @AdrianBacon
      @AdrianBacon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LillySchwartz For sure. In Cartier-Bresson's case, I think it comes down to who decided when to trip the shutter. If he said "now!" and an assistant tripped it, it's still his photo, but if the assistant just tripped it without his input, then that would be a much tougher sell.
      More assistant discussion: In my studio, I use assistants extensively. I generally try to be the one to trip the shutter or at least have the shutter tripped at my direction, but, in the moments I don't, it's my camera and lighting equipment, and it's my name and signature on the contract, and I'm the named party responsible for delivering the agreed upon image, so assistants tend to be the silent hands so to speak in those scenarios. Is it fair? Not really, but that's the price you pay for not having any real risk outside of me deciding you're a terrible assistant and firing you. If you want your name associated with a photograph, then be the one who is responsible for delivering the image.
      This same thing can be applied to many photographers that we know and love from history. The vast majority of them didn't develop their own film or print their own work. Somebody else did. We would never see their work the way we see it today if it wasn't for their printer. Does the printer get credit for that image? Not really. In fact, it's often not even known that they used a printer instead of printing it themselves. It's not until you dig into it and do some research that you find that they took photos, but used a printer to make the prints. This is why I think a lot of the "rules" are hogwash and are just people trying to make things more complicated than they need to be.

And even if they didn’t, it’s majority rule in democracy and since I’ve heard over and over that “only” people like me die, why make such a fuss, etc. I don’t think the majority would be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to prevent this virus from killing millions. The governments pretend as if it was unavoidable, that they didn’t know, but that’s a lie now. I don’t know, multiple times each day? So, what do you do, when your government has decided that you’re an acceptable loss and the majority of people thinks that it’s ok? What can you do? Nothing.
