It could definitely use wireless Apple/Android CarPlay as well… They did it for the CX-50. ^ I wish that back up sensors were not only on the top trim, too. Outside of the esthetics- the 360 camera and front parking sensors would have been good enough for the price difference of Signature, imo.
This is my favorite car in the segment, hands down ! As an automotive enthusiast, you can't get better than this in terms of value, looks, and the whole package. Yes, you're sacrificing MPG for driving dynamics, let me tell you this car is one of the best drivers car for the money. Especially for a SUV. I drove a stelvio ti sport 2020 and it was the best handling , driving SUV I've ever driven. I went back to my CX5 and i was blown away, this car costs half of what that car costs and it delivers 80% of the feel. The handling is spot on, I'd kill myself if I have to drive a rav4. Mazda is so underrated. The fit and finish is better than the CRV too, great video. Thanks for punching it unlike other reviewers ! TBH this car drives better than the rdx , it feels heavier and not as nimble. Steering is also numb and brakes are even spongier ! I drove a RDX advanced 2021 model , also adaptive steering too.. but the CX5 has tighter steering for sure, heavier most people don't like it. I do !
I'm a car guy and was very against moving to a crossover/SUV bc they didn't seem as fun to drive or have much power unless you were going luxury. I was cross shopping the cx5 with a used Acura RDX and the value was just too good on the cx5. Fun to drive, fast for it's segment, beautiful inside and out and all the goodies on the top trim for a good price, the cx5 was a no-brainer
We had a 2021 Kona and were able to trade it in and get an amazing deal on the CX-30 turbo and have to say that set up is so fun to drive! Awesome to see them do this to the cx-5 i can't imagine how fun it is to drive now. Love the vid!
In February 2022 I bought the 2022 Mazda CX-5 turbo, exact model(color & trim) you just reviewed. Traded in my red 2019 Mazda CX-5 touring preferred package after 3 years of enjoying it for this turbo'd 2022 refreshed CX-5 & I love it.
Just bought a Carbon edition cx5 2022. Non turbo but AWD. It drives like a car my wife loves it. It has all the power the versatility the performance and elegance of the interior with red leather seats just blow competition out of the water.
I share your enthusiasm about the CX-5. We found a used ‘19 GT with a ridiculously low 9K miles on the clock. The car still smells new. We are absolutely in love with it. The shocker is the fuel economy. We are getting the rated 25-26 mpg, city, but our highway mileage is averaging 40-41mpg, which is much higher than the factory rating of 31 mpg. The color is Eternal Blue Mica, which is the most beautiful shade of blue we’ve ever seen.
Great review! We have two CX-5s ('16 Touring AWD & '19 GT Premium AWD). I 100% agree with you... you give up a little space/comfort but get a SUV that is engaging and actually fun to drive! I absolutely love the new Turbo trim! It's unique and really stands out in the crowd whereas the previous Grand Touring Reserve didn't. Fyi, the red accent in the grill is specific to the Turbo trim. Also, starting in '22 all Mazda SUVs have AWD. FWD is no longer available.
Congrats! AWD makes sense in your climate. We don't see the snow much here hence I drove 800 miles to pick up my 2021 Carbon Turbo fwd one year only production cx-5. Fantastic Ride.
I just got CX-5 S Premium not a month ago! Love the look from the outside and especially inside, so old school and classy... I don't need Turbo but I sorely missed the 360 camera view that only comes with Turbo Signature. they should have 360 camera option on the highest non-turbo trim.
Yes, agreed. One of the best looking if not the best looking SUV! But it’s the driving experience! It never fails to put a smile on my face, especially on a windy twisty road! 🙂
I used to drive honda & toyota until cx5 came out. Cx5 soul red is my 1st mazda & bought it last year which I found the best looking in its class inside out & fun to drive.
Keep up the good work. The reviews on the channel accurate and have elegance and class. My purchase of 2020 CX-5 Turbo was inspired by one of your reviews. I love CX-5 ride, handling and Turbo Power❤️
So do you prefer the naturally aspirated engine or the turbo having driven both since you own two naturally aspirated? You mentioned that the regular 2.5L engine felt more responsive, lighter. What would you choose if you were buying another CX-5 today? And do you like the Turbo trim or do you think it's worth it to get the Signature to get the bright alloy wheels, nappa leather, wood inlays and LED lights in the cabin? I really like the looks of both of the upper trims especially in the red or machine grey. Both have AWD, Bose stereo, leather ventilated seats, memory drivers seat. Tough decision. Can you give any insight on the two? Like are the seats or leather more durable or soft in the Signature trim?
This review is soooo spot on. My daughter has a CX5 and loves it. The next daughter with get a CX30 or Mazda3 hatch. I can't wait til the Mazda6 or CX70 comes out
No one talks about the maximum payload capacity of the CX5 (1300 lbs) vs CRV which has more space (but not safe to load) because it can not carry more than 850 lbs maximum, and that includes the driver and any content. See tag on door jamb.
From what I've been seeing about the CX-50, it answers most if not all of the drawbacks of the CX-5 with it's longer/wider platform. And yes, I want a PHEV or full-on BEV version! Oh yeah. There's the pano sunroof, too.
Unfortunately what I’ve been reading about the upcoming CX50 is yes, a longer and wider wheelbase and track, although for whatever reason Mazda dedicated the majority of the extra room to the cargo area. Which will be a nice welcome,,,only millimeters of extra legroom in rear compared AND slightly less rear headroom to the gem reviewed here.
@@rick8125 The back seat of a CUV is not for full grown people. They're for average size teens and children. Most Americans do not get these for road trips with adults. It's a family (two adults+kids, maybe a pet) size vehicle. If you are taking road trips with adults, get the correct vehicle. That's just my opinion based on what I see on the road here in the US. And MOST of the time it's one person per vehicle.
@@rick8125 untrue. Trust me. I have the full dealer spec sheet (14 pages) on the CX-50. I was waiting for the release for months (my wife has a CX-5 GT) hoping it would have more cargo and rear seat area. It does but only barely. We are talking about a half inch here and there and a grand total of 0.5 extra CF in the cargo area. I don't think anyone will be able to tell the difference without a tape measure. I needed more room so I bought a CX-9 GT instead. The other thing is that the CX-50 is pretty expensive if you buy one of the Turbo trims. Talking 40k (US $) and up with destination. Here is hoping the CX-70 is big enough and doesn't cost 50k.
Yep, I'd like a pano roof, but there's tradeoffs- what's a reality is the CX-5 has a multi-link independent rear suspension, whereas Mazda put a cheaper torsion beam suspension (ala the CX-30) on the CX-50. There IS a difference. And sorry, I don't want to stray from the tried and true quality formula of "Mazda =Made in Japan" in favor of "Made in Alabama". Just my .02
I moved from a 2006 Mazdaspeed 3, I bought the NA version GT SP here in Australia. It’s perfect for our family. Yes you work the engine a bit harder to get it moving fast but it has sufficient power for accelerating into traffic, keeping up with other cars and even overtaking, will quickly accelerate from 90-100kph to 140kph to get around large trucks and other slow vehicles. I would have got the turbo if I was single.
We just bought a 2018 Touring, in pristine condition with 41,000 miles on it, for our son. In this crazy car buying market, Mazda was the clear choice. Actually paid less than Edmunds or KBB cost ranges. We were getting so tired of seeing $25k used Civics and Corollas.
This is facts, I had a 1st gen 2014 GT and it was the best vehicle I've ever owned. Can't wait to get back into a turbo! Just subbed because I see you also have great taste! 👌🏼
So glad this review popped up on my feed. My current lease is up in a matter of days now and I'm having a hard time deciding between the CX-5 and the Kia Sorento. I test drove the 2025 CX-5 in Machine Gray Metallic, Signature trim and loved it. Very elegant in that color I think. I would definitely spring for the Signature trim. I want all the goodies. The Sorento in X-Line AWD Prestige trim is going to cost me a bit. I keep coming back to the CX-5 though. Must be a reason for that. Receiving a gentle nudge perhaps. Thanks for your thoughts.
Just purchased a '22 CX-5 Turbo trim, delivery in mid-July. Local dealers are "pre-selling", hard to find inventory in stock/on lot. I would have loved to have gotten the Soul Red Crystal Metallic, but have read numerous horror stories, blogs, and Mazda forums re: owners with the red finding excessive chipping, peeling, etc- evidently only with the Soul Red Crystal color. (One needs only Google the topic, tons of posts.) Dunno, it was enough to move me to the Deep Crystal Blue Mica (which also is outstanding) . I almost hung my hat on a '22 Hyundai Hybrid Turbo, but I have an addiction to Mazdas 15 years running :-)
This is a great car for a couple reasons. It is elegant in its design and interior, for sure much better looking than Toyota, Honda, Hyundai. It is reliable as a Toyota/Honda. It gives you the chance to have a decent turbo engine that provides the right amount of HP you need (having 400 HP in a SUV is just to feel cool about it but 99% of the time it is useless). In addition it let you run a turbo engine with non-premium gasoline that is a very uncommon and budget friendly options. Finally it has great technology and safety feature and the space is well optimize: you have the right space for passenger and cargo but the car is not excessively big. I totally recommend it with a turbo engine, the base engine is ok for most of people but I feel that is needed to have more than 200HP in a SUV in case you need to speed up all of a sudden to avoid a dangerous situation.
I have a CX-5 N/A I only would upgrade to the Turbo model as I like the black paint on the trim and side mirrors! Would be nice if it had parking sensors and 360 camera for the price but can live with it!
I know the rear seats are a bit smaller and the trunk storage is small in class. but for two people with little kids it is great. And the smaller size means parking in the parking spaces is great. Parking spaces in parking lots seem to be getting smaller and smaller. I would like to see these car reviews do segments on getting in and out of the vehicle in full parking lots.
Nice review. I am getting my 2022 CX5 Signature tomorrow. Did you ever try any aftermarket wireless carplay adapters? Trying to see if I can get one to make it wireless in the CX5. I believe Mazda provides the Wirelss carplay in Mazda 6 and MX5 miata but not on CX5. That's strange.
This is the car that I loved so much and longing to drive it, the turbo charge CX-5 with blacked out trim and Soul red crystal, but the new CX-50/60 is even more desirable ones😂😂😂.😘😘😘🏎🏎🏎
Great video, but remember the "under $40k for Turbo Signature" you mentioned is probably not for Soul Red, and probably does not include destination fees in MSRP. So it's easy to go over $40k for Turbo Signature.
2 main gripes: The seats are crazy uncomfortable and short. I am not super tall 6'1" and most of my leg dangles off. I've heard plenty of others complain about that as well. . The door sills are way too high makes it feel so much tighter and smaller.
@@daniellanzotti2391 no need to get your panties in a bundle. I think it makes sense to confirm you’re talking about the new seats as Mazda literally redesigned the seats in ‘22 to make them more comfortable…especially since other reviewers have said the new seats are better than before.
What cracks me up about these guys is they never say how the turbo runs out of steam at higher speeds I have a carbon 6 and while it gives you a boost to get up to highway speeds quickly, Thats where it ends. Its over hyped, its disappointing, its not worth the premium The NA is a more rewarding experience all around. You never once want for more. It gets up to 75-80 just fine. So for those that want a great overall engine that is more than enough 99% of time, get the NA For those that need to feel a hard on for a split second because of immaturity, spend away and get the turbo.
i heard no mention of the transmission being refined for '22, with better shift points, etc. that other reviewers are saying it is that much better than ever !...
I definitely would take it over the RAV4 and CRV. I have owned both the of these and now I am driving the 2022 CX 5 carbon edition and I love it. I really liked my 2019 RAV4 but the loud engine wasn’t my favorite. The CX 5 is a lot quieter and shifts smoother along with a nicer interior with red leather seats. On top of that the dealership I bought my Mazda from was the best. Holiday Mazda in Fond Du Lac is unbelievable. Absolutely no pressure tactics and the best sales assistant I have ever dealt with, glad I drove 40 miles south to buy my vehicle. After having owned one Honda and four Toyotas I am enjoying my new Mazda even more.
i liked my 2007 Rav4 Limited - 6 cyl and 269 hp, with lots of intelligent space and features inside. The downside was the swing gate that opened to block the curbside ( thinking that the Japanese designers meant it for the other side of the road use in their home country). I have the 2021 1/2 CX-5 GT now, and love everything about it - except for the small sunroof. I think I would go for this over the Rav4 these days as the new Rav4 ( and the CRV) has a very blocky tank-like design with very wide plastic trim around the wheels. It just not for my stage of life.
I drove a friend’s Rav 4 and it was noisy and the cockpit felt crowded to the point of claustrophobic. It was also very noisy around town. Great car for snow and undoubtedly durable, but no fun to drive for me. I plan to buy a CX-5 turbo this summer.
I know this is a year oldish video. Just was curious. I heard with Turbo Engines, you have to sit idle for a few minutes after driving them so that they don't overheat. Is this something you do on a daily basis? I am considering the CX-5 Turbo Edition but I am hesitant because I have never had a car with a turbo engine in it.
I own a '24 Cx5 Turbo, and the dealer said there's no need to warm the turbo at all aside from driving gently through the gears for 30 seconds or so is enough.
Does anyone know if the turbo engine is beefed up to handle the higher pressures of the turbo? Do the turbo versions have heavier suspension or brakes? Thank you.
Looking at buying a 22 CX-5 carbon edition it would be my first Mazda as a fellow midwesterner in Minnesota I’ve read online Mazda has thin paint that chips and rusts easily is this something you have encountered with the winters and the salt on the road?
Our ‘19 GT had some minor rock chips on the hood, when we bought it used. You could see the black base primer, which never rusted, even after two years of not being touched up by the previous owner.
One color culprit only --> Soul Red Crystal. Just Google the subject, it's not a myth. evidently an issue with the red color only- thin, not bonded correctly, etc, but again, there are blogs, Mazda forums and the such just on this subject. I just ordered a '22 CX-5 Turbo and this actually prompted me to choose Deep Blue Crystal Mica. FWIW, I own two Mazdas now (2015 Mazda3 (gray) and my wife has a 2018 Mazda 6, (white)...paint durability for both is no different than usual is my experience)
I think that was only an issue with the 2015 and 2016 models, then they resolved it. My 2016.5 CX-5 windshield literally cracked on the evening after day I drove it home from the lot. They replaced it and I haven't had an issue with anything since.
Thanks for the review! That newer CX-5 seems to have a lift kit. Or is that the effect of the rims? I have a 2017 CX-5 GT and I'm quite often on service roads shuttling mountain bikers (including me). The clearance is good but I'm wondering whether I can get some extra inches. I'm at the moment itching for the CX-50 which I'll probably switch to but even then I would love to find someone who could lift it another inch. It doesn't seem a very popular thing to do for the CX-5. Cheers!
Why would you buy one of these over a Mazda 3 turbo? Only reason I can think of is space for kids and such. Otherwise the 3 turbo is going to be next level fun to drive. How do I know? I have a 2021 turbo hatch😊 Oh, and I've test driven a CX-5 (non-turbo) and while it felt good for what it is and fairly luxurious, not the same as the much smaller 3.
Check the car crash test! Cx5 did awsome job 👏 Today I test drove bmw x5 and benz Glc but.. I didn't feel that great about those vehicles. I have Cx5 2018 and Cx3 2018. I love Mazda. And I think that I will wait for the Cx70 plug in hybrid 😆😆
Hard to say definitively since I haven’t driven the cx50 yet, but in talking with other journalists it sounds like a good next step. The thing I’m most interested in would be a cx50 with a hybrid or PHEV
if mazda adds a panoramic sunroof to the cx5, it would hands down be the best car in its segment!
A lot of people dont want a pano roof, this is perfect

If it optioned a carbon insert (like Porsche) instead of the sunroof it would take 100 lbs off the roof and the car would handle noticeably better.
I don't miss it. Saves weight, increases rigidity keeps cabin temps down.

I don't understand why only the top Signature model is the only one with parking sensors, that should be standard on all models!!

Yeah if see that color splash in the grill your packing a torbo new for 2022. I like it
Love my 2018 black cx5 with 19 inches
Does the turbo have double pane windows for the driver? Or is that only for the signature?
2 main gripes:
The seats are crazy uncomfortable and short. I am not super tall 6'1" and most of my leg dangles off. I've heard plenty of others complain about that as well.
.
The door sills are way too high makes it feel so much tighter and smaller.
You talking about the ‘22 model year? If not Mazda made the seats more comfortable for ‘22… not sure if they fixed your complaint or not.
@@Atothen1234 oh my bad I was referring to the 1977 Mazda CX5 😷.
Of course I'm talking about this car you pumpkin head.
@@daniellanzotti2391 no need to get your panties in a bundle.
I think it makes sense to confirm you’re talking about the new seats as Mazda literally redesigned the seats in ‘22 to make them more comfortable…especially since other reviewers have said the new seats are better than before.
@@Atothen1234 No worries. I forgive you for your ignorance.
@@daniellanzotti2391 you sure are a weirdo.
What cracks me up about these guys is they never say how the turbo runs out of steam at higher speeds
I have a carbon 6 and while it gives you a boost to get up to highway speeds quickly, Thats where it ends. Its over hyped, its disappointing, its not worth the premium
The NA is a more rewarding experience all around. You never once want for more. It gets up to 75-80 just fine. So for those that want a great overall engine that is more than enough 99% of time, get the NA
For those that need to feel a hard on for a split second because of immaturity, spend away and get the turbo.
I have to agree with your assessment. The NA 2.5 is a solid performer and needs nothing. The better fuel economy numbers are an added bonus.
turbo looks sooooooo much better than the signature, its like a 500 year old dude designs the signature and his grandchildren design the rest
i heard no mention of the transmission being refined for '22, with better shift points, etc. that other reviewers are saying it is that much better than ever !...
I love my 2022 CX5!
FWD isn’t available on the 2022. AWD is standard across the 2022 CX-5 range.
Where in WI? Green Bay viewer here 👋🏽
That Mazda looks great!
Milwaukee! My friend was at Gaelic Storm last night in GB!
I’m a fan of this car but I saw the Cox 59 which looks great too. Can’t decide
Special thanks to our Patrons for their support of the channel! Would you take this CX5 over a CRV or Rav4?
I’m seriously thinking about getting a 2022 CX 5 preferred… It would be about another $8000 for turbo. Is it that bad of an idea to pass on the turbo?
That’s it, cx5 is on my shopping list
😎💪
Looking at the new Dodge Hornet and this had a little less hp but more torque, and better 0-60 time???
The face-lift versions are usually the better one as all the kinks have been worked out.
Good review thanks. Just a quick comment, the AWD is not a Haldex system nor does it work remotely like one.
You’re correct, this was a miss thanks for catching!
I’m looking at buying to top trip what colour would u go for can’t decide on the red or eternal blue
Polymetal Grey is offered in some markets, definitely the best colour imo
How’s gas and reliability on turbo
Does paint chip? Many owner of soul red saying paint chips really easy. Want to get cx5 soul red but really worried about the paint chip issue.
Nice, but you were a bit fast... The new CX-60 (70 in US) hybrid is its new bigger better brother... Even nicer!
Isn't yours fwd? If so, the awd will feel heavier. :)
Why does California have snow? What city are you in?
Have the 2021 cx5 grand Turing reserve turbo love it
I know this is a year oldish video.
Great video...
Thanks 🙏
How about a review on the Mazda CX-50?
Does anyone know if the turbo engine is beefed up to handle the higher pressures of the turbo? Do the turbo versions have heavier suspension or brakes? Thank you.
I would take the CX 5 over the CX 50.
Do you think it is good for a 6"3' person?
The front seats would be fine
Fortunately, most of us are not that tall, so the rear seats are fine.
4Runner vs CX50? 🤔
Have you noticed any issues with carbon build-up on the valves yet, or is it too soon to even look for that potential issue?
Use premium gas and change the oil when scheduled and you will have no problems.
I’ve taken mine across country. Zoom zoom.😀
Love your reviews keep it up but If I have to criticize would be the theme in the background might be lil bit loud!
Good note, thanks for watching 😎👌
Sorry if I missed it but what was the price as tested?
$38,670 including destination
Any carbon build up on the intake valves for these engines since they’re using direct injection?
No, we did not experience any . My nephew has over 310,000 km, wife had 246, 000 km
Finna cop me a mazda 6.
Any windshield cracks??
I think that was only an issue with the 2015 and 2016 models, then they resolved it. My 2016.5 CX-5 windshield literally cracked on the evening after day I drove it home from the lot. They replaced it and I haven't had an issue with anything since.
@@well-well-well-whathavewehere that’s good to hear.
Cheers!
When is the cx50 review coming?
Hoping to shoot on Wednesday 😏
Make it a vs battle against the cx5 still debating which one we want.
@@miltongonzalez8726 😎👌
Laughed out loud at 3:30
Lol 🦍
No space, but hey it has red stitching lol
Why would you buy one of these over a Mazda 3 turbo? Only reason I can think of is space for kids and such. Otherwise the 3 turbo is going to be next level fun to drive. How do I know? I have a 2021 turbo hatch😊 Oh, and I've test driven a CX-5 (non-turbo) and while it felt good for what it is and fairly luxurious, not the same as the much smaller 3.
តំលៃប៉ុន្មាន?
I need to check one of these out based on your recommendation. Would like to compare it to an RDX
Ohhhh…..rdx>
Check the car crash test! Cx5 did awsome job 👏 Today I test drove bmw x5 and benz Glc but.. I didn't feel that great about those vehicles. I have Cx5 2018 and Cx3 2018. I love Mazda. And I think that I will wait for the Cx70 plug in hybrid 😆😆
Nice, but lack of space in back seat it’s a dealbreaker for me
“Beauty is pain…”. Lol
2022 that is
Would you get the cx50 over a cx5?
Hard to say definitively since I haven’t driven the cx50 yet, but in talking with other journalists it sounds like a good next step. The thing I’m most interested in would be a cx50 with a hybrid or PHEV
You cannot get any cx5 without awd
Mazda is fantastic 👏
👍
Sold!
Can you review the new mazda CX50 please 🙂
I’m on it 😎👌
Bro looks like jack Wilshere
