SSD easy heat fix: I just tested a Fujipoly 1.5mm thermal pad (stacked x2 over controller chip, single thickness elsewhere) and it drops the SSD temps 20C! Woohoo! That allows it to use the bottom cover as a heatsink for serious heat dispersion. Now the SSD averages 30C at idle and 49C when running the CrystalDiskMark SSD benchmark.
Would you post a picture showing where exactly you placed the pads? Also, would re-pasting with thermal grizzly kryonaut not make a significant difference? Planning on doing this once I receive mine.
It’s unfortunate they don’t install them when you’re paying this much for a product! Mine arrives Tuesday and I’ve heard it really makes a difference in temps and fan noise
I saw this upload and thought, "ugh, another 20 min review on a top-end laptop way outside my price-range with premium but pricey features that won't trickle down to consumer-grade devices." Well, about 10-min in, this is probably the best laptop review you've made. It's not the most detailed, but it's hit more important points than any other video I can think of. I really appreciate the brief mention and recommendation for ThrottleStop. Lisa clearly knows her audience, and knows that this little mention wouldn't confuse less technical viewers but would inform the kinds of enthusiasts who buy these products of the tinkering potential of this laptop. This is the kind of stuff that gets asked on forums and might get one or two responses a few months later. Nothing is "crispy" or "fresh." The display is "x nits" and the CPU temperature "x degrees," and are then compared to other laptops in the class so we can see if it's stands up to the competition. The video isn't a 8-min pan-and-scan that should have been a gallery, or an hour-long ramble full of circular diction. Lisa's videos are always genuine, well-edited, and above all-else informed/informative. I don't want my neighbor's kid recommending me a laptop. I want that person with a career in tech, a lifelong passion for content creation, and tinkers just enough to give me a sense of the device. I'm not getting a Razer laptop and their vapor chamber implementation is definitely not going to appear on non-gaming laptops, but I definitely have a better appreciation for the device and what it offers to its target market.
Wow, that's detailed high praise- thank you! The latest gen Surface products use vapor chamber cooling as well, so it's not just for gaming laptops- yay.
I've watched about 20 or more videos about this laptop and none of them were even close to as in-depth and detailed as this one. A big thanks for that!
Alex Nickerson they are not as biased or as detailed Lisa give you the finest details from surface tempurature to display calibration and upgradability
Alex Nickerson Linus's reviews are not superior. Lisa's reviews just provide a different set of information. Clearly to you the information Linus provides is more important but for others he may not talk about what they want to know.
I bought this along with a Core v2 (with my current GTX 1080 inside). I do VR development on it all day 5 days a week, and game on it when I'm not working. I use an Oculus Rift. Heat-wise, the Core really helps when using it all day. The laptop doesn't generate nearly as much heat with the Core which is good for all day use. None of the VR sensors or VR headset USBs would work on the Core, but luckily this laptop has 3 usb ports, so between that and a USB hub I could plug them in there. Then connect my other peripherals on the Core. Then I can unplug only 4 cables to bring my lapotp with me on the go! Although it does run pretty hot, but I do run it in gaming mode.
Hi Lisa! Been watching you for many years and love your channel! Thank you for bringing up the issue with the R Shift key. You just breathed new life out of my old 2nd Gen Razer Blade. I travel quite a bit for work and the thin and light form factor is ideal for gaming in a hotel room (like you said), but not so much for MS Office work. My biggest gripe with all Razer laptops is the lack of dedicated Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys. I do a lot of work in Excel and Word, and not having those dedicated keys makes me less productive. I know Razer provides a workaround with the Fn+arrow keys, but the muscle memory on my old, worn-out, fingers just won't cooperate! It never dawned on me to re-purpose the arrow keys with the Synapse software! (I never use the arrow keys, either). Keep up the great product reviews!
I just watched a video from the Hardware Cannucks and this laptop with the 1060 Max-Q and same CPU rendered (Adobe Premiere) 4K video about two times faster than the Lenovo Legion Y740 that actually has a 2070 Max-Q, and it did it about 11% faster than a Aero 15X with same CPU and 2070 Mx-Q. The Lenovo seemed to have some driver issues though according to the reviewer. Name of video is: The Best All-Round Gaming Notebook of 2019? Legion Y740 Review
+Aaron Gallagher New products take time to launch dude. Most smaller gaming laptops only started getting high refresh rates in 2017 (last year). Razer launched their last laptop in April 2017 (7700hq, 1060), they launched the razer phone in November 2017, Now they launched their newer 8th gen laptops in early 2018. Even the Aero 15X and MSI Stealth series just started getting high refresh rates standard in 2018. I'm waiting for their next refresh with Nvidia's newer gpus (8750h + 1160/1170).
i absolutely love it. yes it gets hot during gaming, but the other laptops with this formfactor also gets hot. the only thing i don't like is the keyboard, the keys are not fully RGB lightend. that kinda sucks. but for the rest a great laptop
Don't think you mentioned it but vapor chambers are very expensive and hard to produce which goes to some way explaining the extra cost. In UK the pricing is very similar to competition.
Great review this is the most detailed and complete review of this laptop yet. If you owned the Aero 15x v8 and had the chance to replace it with the Blade would you?
I’m usually an Alienware laptop gamer, but I decided to go with the Razer Blade Pro 4K GTX 1080 because it was the most portable. So far I’m very impressed with Razer. I would get the Blade 2018.
Love your reviews Lisa but I just returned a Blade 15 because of the whiny fans. They did not fix it. The new one has the same whine under load as all my previous Blades did
I was hoping so but when Razer told me it was normal I just asked for a refund and got a GS65 which doesn’t whine at all. Pros and Cons to both. Hate the right side power plug on the MSI
Lisa love your videos! What makes your channel great is how precise you get covering technical info but perhaps you could make a video explaining things like what delta E or what 4vs 2 lane pcie means for consumers. Another thing is I’m waiting to see your coverage of always connected PCs, specifically the Lenovo miix 630 as that’s what I think is most interesting
I just found out about an obscure gaming laptop that seems like it needs more attention (like a review from MobileTechReview). The Tongfang GK5CN5Z is one of those "generic" laptops that gets customized and resold under different names. American sellers include CyberPowerPC, Eluktronics, and MainGear. The great thing is that it's a light, thin-bezel 15.6" laptop with a mechanical keyboard, including a numeric keypad. Previously it seemed impossible to get more than two of (compact, powerful specs, good keyboard). It might be the best option right now for some of us who hate chiclet keyboards and/or want extra keys to remap. The biggest flaw, from my perspective, is that it has no Thunderbolt port. The only GPU options are 1050Ti and 1060, and the lack of Thunderbolt 3 means you can't add an eGPU. Also, small battery, and it's not the thinnest chassis around. Lots of discussion and links to European/Asian sellers here: forum.notebookreview.com/threads/tongfang-gk5cn5z.815943/
Lisa - awesome review and I should say awesome reviews! You rock and have the best and very comprehensive tech reviews out in a such a timely fashion ahead of the rest. Keep up your amazing work!
absolutely amazing review. You covered all area with in-depth information. Looking forward to this puppy in a smackdown! Keep up the outstanding work!!
That shift key is a deal breaker. I had the same issue with my Lenovo Yoga 910 and even remapping the up arrow isn’t the best workaround. Especially when you go back to a proper keyboard.
Hello. Thanks for a great review. You didnt mention the audio though. Would like to know how it is? Hard to be objective I know. But is it good enough for streaming? Does it sound good or metal-boxy? How is the base? Thanks!
Another great review! Any chance of reviewing the new HP Envy 13 x360 with Ryzen mobile? Looks like one of the few premium ultraportables currently using Ryzen (the 13" x360 uses them exclusively this year apparently!).
how are you always so consistent with your work?! another great review! I'm currently trying to decide between the surface book 2 and this Razer, the thorough review definitely helped. Thanks!
For the best performance and longevity, what graphics setup would be recommended between 1060 (or Max Q) and 1070 (or Max Q)? Also for the display between 60 and 144 Hz?
wonderful and thorough review. anywayi have a RB15 on order as we speak. however, the more i read about the thermal aspect the more i worry. i'm just an average laptop consumer. i do not know much about hardware nor do i normally open up laptops, which means the suggestion for liquid repaste is out of the question. that said, i want to know if it's detrimental to repaste and undervolt? thanks.
Lisa great vid better than alllll the rest but i have given up on razer....meh....can you review the dell precision line especially the 5530 2in 1? And the 7730? Would feel better hearing your take before i hit buy.
Thank Lisa for the review. It's nice and powerful laptop but my 2018 's webcam has stopped working. I have tried to google the solution but can't find any. But i was also told that it's common for this model to have this issue, but I don't know if it's true.
Should I opt for the 4K display over the 1080p 144hz display? I play PC games as much as I edit on Photoshop/Lightroom! I'm a competitive gamer as well as a professional photographer, and I can't choose between the displays haha. Thank you for the video! (:
If you’re job/livelihood is centred around Photography and editing then I would suggest the 4K display however if it’s just a side hobby then the 144hz is the way to go
I have seen some old Razer Blade users have 'bumped' touch pad.. Also some XPS 15 9550 users. That's due to deformed battery caused by high temperature. Hope won't happen to Razer Blade 15.6.
Hi Lisa, many thanks for the review. What laptops from the current range available has the best sound, please? Really interested in a machine with great speakers and a 13 to 15.6 inch screen. Are there any laptops with good sound, please?
nice that you were able to drop the temp of the SSD, my other concern is that the heat is a battery killer. at my times with blade 14, the wrist rest area never got that hot, if this one gets extremely hot i feel like it will decrease the battery longevity, so I wonder if cover it with aluminum tape will isolate it from the heat.
Great review, i already liked previous Blades but this one... Is near perfect! Finally a gaming laptop without those aggressive curves and flashyness and actually a powerful hardware combined.
Thank you very much for the review!! Could You possibly let us know how loud the laptop gets (dB)? I‘m not a gamer and would use it for 3D Rendering (CPU and GPU) and fan noise and thermals are really important for me. I don‘t know how much pressure gaming puts on the performance in comparisson with tasks like 3D rendering, but I assume it is similar.
Do you think, it could be usefull, to connect the cpu/gpu heatpipes to the laptop's bottom cover, so the chips coud use the whole laptop surface as a big heatsink? On something like an asus zephyrus, this could be an interesting option... no?
Good one, comparing with other laptops that have the same price. Plus the screen is way good for those who interested in colours and the design as well. Love it.
Love your reviews!! I am predominately looking at this laptop as a content creator; photography and videos. Would you recommend the 4k screen or staying with the matte screen?
As much as I want it, this company has horrible quality control. I bet every person who bought that 1080 4K laptop has returned them or they are paper weights now. The same goes for their 1060 laptop they released, horrible long term reviews. Look up forums on reddit or reviews on amazon, this information is out there. Again looks nice I’ve never had one but the reviews scare me off.
I'm one of those. I bought this laptop and had it for about 4 days and returned it. The trackpad constantly stopped working for 10-12 seconds, the battery life was horrible until I reduced the screen from 144Hz to 60Hz and disabled turbo boost in the BIOS. Once doing that, I was averaging about 6-7hrs of normal use, which is great. However, the trackpad made it impossible to use unless hooked up to an external keyboard. :/ Such a shame. This was my first PC laptop purchase since 2011 and I wanted to love this so much!
Siege yeah and they cut battery capacity to make body little smaller, has dimmer screen than aero 15 and way dimmer than xps 15 9570, has no card reader, and inferior wifi card, and heating issues, bad support like you said. Dimness huge deal when using outside, in lit area, in car, etc. Overheating is huge degradation of system life issue. Best option is xps 15 9570 in few months cyber Monday deals or through Costco with 3 yr accidental damage and save $700. Xps is super bright and through Costco you're covered. Aero 15x is too novelty, 50% dimmer screen than xps 15 9570 and not good at system building, and price premium. Good attempt razer but you will return 5x before you have stable unit, they're not mature enough like dells xps 15 9570, and plus you can get blazing i9 option as well.
Honest to God, wasn't really even consciously aware of the right shift key for years until I started watching Blade 15 reviews. I'm left handed and only use the left shift key, it was just funny to realize that there is in fact another shift key over there lol
Was looking everywhere for battery life info! Thanks Lisa!! Would u reckon it could get around 9+ hrs with the 1060 60hz monitor doing Netflix and school work?
Yeah my old Deathadder 3.5g from 2010 is still stuck on 2.0 and then theres Razer Surround which is stuck on 2.0 as well. My newer Atheris is on 3.0 so I am sort of forced to keep both 2.0 and 3.0 installed at this point.
I'm looking for a high performance laptop that I can use in my engineering classes when I start school this fall. This seems like a pretty good laptop though do you have any other recommendations?
I have a Dell G7, and other than the option for the 144hz screen and slightly better contrast/color quality, I'm wondering why people would spend $800 more on that? Form Factor?
I suppose the wrist rest gets hot is because Razer use the entire aluminium chassis as a large heatsink. This explains it's outstanding cooling efficiency compare to similar sized laptops (macbook pro 2018 for example).
Your temps really surprised me...negatively. With that beefy cooling system I was really expecting better temps. From what I remember my stock Blade 14’s in the past had very similar, if not identical temperatures under load. Seems like all laptops now have very similar temps and the only true fix is liquid metal, undervolting the CPU and Fuji thermal pads as replacements. For me there are better options out there. I love the GX501 Zephyrus. I don’t use laptops on my lap and more so as portable workstations, so battery life/Optimus are useless to me. I love the keyboard that’s pushed forward; perfect for gaming. I’ve always hated resting my hands on a sweaty palmrest, which also erodes the finish over time. It’s great that we have so many options for lots of different needs and preferences now, but I was definitely expecting more from that cooling system. It’s almost as if they didn’t change anything.
I just got the Xiaomi Gaming laptop for about $1200 and I love it. It looks better than the Blade and it runs a lot cooler as well. Maybe a review of that as well ? :)
Big name reviewers are still ignoring a huge huge factor on reviews of gaming laptops and PCs.... Customer service... You can't ignore this subject when doing a full review of an item.. That also affects user experience.. Razer has the worst customers service in the business... Please mention this for future reviews because that is a huge factor that's overlooked.
So what's the battery life? I noticed you talk a lot about battery, switchable graphics, charger but never actually said how many hours it works with battery.
If I have a 144hz monitor but am moving to college dorms and dont want to bring a full desktop would you recommend buying this in 60hz to use for study in day and to connect with displayport to the 144hz monitor in evenings for gaming.
Nice, so the temperature of the bottom cover is bearable during gaming?
Would you post a picture showing where exactly you placed the pads? Also, would re-pasting with thermal grizzly kryonaut not make a significant difference? Planning on doing this once I receive mine.
Do you recommend buying this or the surface book2?
Battery life is very important to me
i’m stuck
Please answer me
Thank you for all of your videos 🙏🏻
It’s unfortunate they don’t install them when you’re paying this much for a product! Mine arrives Tuesday and I’ve heard it really makes a difference in temps and fan noise
Billy Jick as soon as you get some trouble return it! Don’t resend it back to them or else your return period will shorten!!
I saw this upload and thought, "ugh, another 20 min review on a top-end laptop way outside my price-range with premium but pricey features that won't trickle down to consumer-grade devices."
Well, about 10-min in, this is probably the best laptop review you've made.
The reviews are getting better and better, just when you thought its already perfect 👏🏼
why you watchin this you have the most piwerful computer in your cave
omg that right shift key macro solution is so genius. It was a serious deterrent for me buying the laptop, but now it's fixed. Thanks Lisa!!!
Dont buy the laptop!!! You will regret it. They will surely have at least a couple of serious issues. And Razer has no customer support.
Or atleast, buy it from the shop that have warranty?
Microsoft.com has it now and 10% off with student discount
This model is NOT listed at the microsoft store, where are you seeing it exactly ?
It is. I have just made an order. You search for "razer blade 2018"
its was a normal day... till I see Lisa uploaded a nice laptop review, now everything is just better
Do you recommend this laptop for AutoCAD and Revit?
its a CNC machined base, varying dimensions do not cost more in production, since cutting time is the same and there are no dedicated molds.
I've watched about 20 or more videos about this laptop and none of them were even close to as in-depth and detailed as this one. A big thanks for that!

I found it ironic that a gaming electronics company didnt have a high refresh rate laptop display for so long yet made a phone with one.

Great looking and pricy laptop, but Razer's quality control and customer service is something one should not endure in their lifetime.
Facts
Is it ok if I buy from Microsoft store?
And how bad is quality control?
Thank you Lisa! Been waiting so long for a proper review of the Blade 15. :)
Poor value for the price compared to other options, a lot of compromises, but Razer does know how to make one sexy looking laptop.
Fizizy Well if you want a sexy thin looking laptop that looks like a Macbook, you're gonna have to make sacrifices to the laptop in certain areas.
What is a better option for that price?
just bought my blade with 512gb and 1070Max-q and 144hz screen for 1900 dollars, gotta love corporate discounts
@@Timberjagi how are you finding it? Any problem yet?
i absolutely love it. yes it gets hot during gaming, but the other laptops with this formfactor also gets hot. the only thing i don't like is the keyboard, the keys are not fully RGB lightend. that kinda sucks. but for the rest a great laptop
what laptop an Architect should buy for rendering and other heavy architectural softwares. 4k screen is not necessary. around $2000
Not sure how I didn't find your channel sooner. These are great! Keep up the good work!
Don't think you mentioned it but vapor chambers are very expensive and hard to produce which goes to some way explaining the extra cost. In UK the pricing is very similar to competition.
I just bought this laptop thanks to your reviews and comparisons! I would LOVE to see a video of you installing the thermal pad!
The best reviewer on TH-cam in my opinion, others are just chasing aesthetics and leaving out content, you know your stuff pretty well
Thanks Lisa. I was waiting for your review on this. Your reviews are always the most informative.

ive been waiting on a review from LTT, but after this review ive seen everything i need and more. thank you. SUBSCRIBED

I'm astounded how much smaller the Blade is to the Aeo15 and GS65. Well done Razer
Love your reviews Lisa but I just returned a Blade 15 because of the whiny fans. They did not fix it. The new one has the same whine under load as all my previous Blades did
Mario00064 Thanks for the info! I was wondering if they had fixed that based on the reviews/reddit posts. MSI GS65 is the way to go 👍
Mario00064 that might be a quality control issue. My fans are loud but not whiny at all
I contacted Razer tech support and they told me the whine was normal even on the new Blade. Otherwise I may have just exchanged for another one
Really, mine does not whine- the only way to get it to sorta whine is setting max fans in manual fan control. Perhaps you got a lemon.
I was hoping so but when Razer told me it was normal I just asked for a refund and got a GS65 which doesn’t whine at all. Pros and Cons to both. Hate the right side power plug on the MSI

How does it compare to the XPS 15 in terms of battery life, heat management and performance?
Can the fans be turned off too for a 100% silent mode for browsing and movie watching?
Yes, this vid is here ☺️ thank you so much
Man ... I really enjoyed watching this lady, and comparing with the the MSI and AERO was great
Hi Lisa, many thanks for the review. What laptops from the current range available has the best sound, please? Really interested in a machine with great speakers and a 13 to 15.6 inch screen. Are there any laptops with good sound, please?
This is the first of your reviews I've watched and god damn are you charming haha.
Subscribed for lifetime - this is quality content right here.
nice that you were able to drop the temp of the SSD, my other concern is that the heat is a battery killer. at my times with blade 14, the wrist rest area never got that hot, if this one gets extremely hot i feel like it will decrease the battery longevity, so I wonder if cover it with aluminum tape will isolate it from the heat.
I can`t choose between this laptab and ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE . Which one is better?
On something like an asus zephyrus, this could be an interesting option... no?
*SO BADLY WAITING FOR THE 17TH INCH MODEL & I trust you, you must be Jedi*
I just have a question did you try repasting it ?? Was it hard because it could become the Best laptop with a bit less temps... :/
Btw great review ;)
Love the pro/con section at the end
Thank you for the great video. Do you plan to review the new XPS 15?
Good one, comparing with other laptops that have the same price. Plus the screen is way good for those who interested in colours and the design as well.
Love it.
Thank you, we were waiting for this :) A smack-down between this and XPS 15 and ZenBook Pro will be really nice.
Rojsa.com واردات تخصصی لپ تاپ especially the new Zenbook Pro. That thing is awesome!
How can you compare 1070 to 1050ti idiot.
It would have to be productivity exclusively battle. This was designed for gaming, the other two were not...
Omar Munoz I know many people who have Razer laptops that's have lasted for any years without any problems
Go microsoft store route. Pay for extra warranty. Less headache.
I love razer products, service just sucks hard.
I bought the MSI GS63VR 3 years ago. Was hoping to buy a new laptop with a 1070MQ, but ill wait for 2 more years.
Hope I won’t have to return this like three times like I did with the last iteration
Lisa, thank you! May you somehow calculate how much the battery last with the 630 graphics?
Yeah my old Deathadder 3.5g from 2010 is still stuck on 2.0 and then theres Razer Surround which is stuck on 2.0 as well. My newer Atheris is on 3.0 so I am sort of forced to keep both 2.0 and 3.0 installed at this point.
Lisa! Your reviews are the best! Unfortunately this is too expensive for me, but still I like staying current on laptop news.
Does the RB 15 have a TPM chip? There are conflicting reports out there, some say it does, some that it doesn't?
I suppose the wrist rest gets hot is because Razer use the entire aluminium chassis as a large heatsink. This explains it's outstanding cooling efficiency compare to similar sized laptops (macbook pro 2018 for example).
Great review. Disappointing to hear how warm it gets to the touch.
Brought this today, and as sad as it is this thing thrashes my PC in performance. Fantastic product!
I just got the Xiaomi Gaming laptop for about $1200 and I love it. It looks better than the Blade and it runs a lot cooler as well. Maybe a review of that as well ? :)
Love the review! When are you releasing the review for the Asus Zephyrus GM501? I look forward to it.
Yeah it's trash... specially when ur used to dealing with Dell or other bigger brands.
So what's the battery life? I noticed you talk a lot about battery, switchable graphics, charger but never actually said how many hours it works with battery.
May I know, is it 32 or 64 GB the max capacity for the RAM?
Like your honest videos and video quality has improved
If I have a 144hz monitor but am moving to college dorms and dont want to bring a full desktop would you recommend buying this in 60hz to use for study in day and to connect with displayport to the 144hz monitor in evenings for gaming.
Can you do a smack down between the zephyrus S vs Razer blade 15? I’m torn between the two and can’t decide. Thanks!
