  • 5MV-43b - Brooks C17 Cambium Carve Review: one year on.
    --------------------------------------
    Just over a year ago I suffered the worst saddle sore that I have had for many many years ( • A pain in the @r$e : s... ). Thius prompted me to look at buying a new saddle, I made a video about the selection process ( • A New Saddle: it shou... ). I ordered the saddle that I chose, a Brooks C17 Cambium Carved, and proceeded to give it an initial assessment ( • Brooks Cambium C17 Ca... ). In this video I take a look back at one-year and 8000km of saddle time with the C17 and give it a thorough review.

    About the 5MV channel
    --------------------------------------
    My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will last no longer than five minutes, many will be much shorter. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.
    I am new to posting videos on TH-cam (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.
    There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

      Thanks for the feedback. I am aware of the audio issue and I have tried several microphones. I think the audio has improved in more recent videos, but I still have a way to go. My 'gravelly' voice does not help. Just about to order a wireless microphone system - maybe that will improve things.

    I have mine for a year as well but much less km. Longest ride was 200km in a day or 260 in 3 days. I'm not using cycling shorts and it's still comfortable but i do feel the tip of the bones after a while. The carve was feeling strange first few rides, now i think it's doing its job. I think this can last a lifetime.

      @Dario Jurišić Great summary, I'm more like 90+kg and I did notice the suspension at first but it was not too excessive. I think if I just picked it up in a shop I wouldn't go "wow that looks like a nice comfortable saddle".

      OK, I did not specifically address this in the review. However if you see my 'unboxing video' (th-cam.com/video/60GtBzojmLs/w-d-xo.html) this is covered to some extent. Also I hint at the suspension qualities of the saddle in this video; however, I acknowledge I could have been clearer and spent a bit more time on this aspect. Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Regards Terry.

    I have a C19carved on my upright Salsa Fargo, C17carved on my aggresive pavement bike and a regular C17 on my neutral gravel bike, none give me any pain but I would assume as with all static body postures you begin to feel some discomfort, stand up and stretch a little while riding or dismount and take a break, I ride in mtb shorts with very minimal padding only because what padding they do have chamois buttr wont soak thru it as with a regular gym short for longer rides. Id say if you dont have a shop who has demo saddles and youve tried a handfull of saddles and still dont feel quite right give the Cambium a try, I went thru about 5-6 diff saddles before I finally got the courage to drop the money on my first Brooks Cambium and havent bought anything else since

    I bought one of these for my Brompton commuter bike 4-5 years ago and thought it was great for the longest time. So much so, that I bought another for my long-distance bike even though I had stopped riding long distance due to injuries. But I was still riding 3-5 mile local rides for shopping, picking up food, short errands, etc. The C17 Cambium carved felt great through all of it.
    But after taking my first longish distance ride in five years, my opinion has totally changed as at about mile 20, I started to feel real discomfort in my sit-bones and by mile 25 and home I could not wait to get off of it. Why?
    I think it is the fact that it does NOT form to my backside like a traditional B17 does. That being said, I do need to experiment a bit more. Part of it could be that I am simply no longer used to long rides. I also didn't wear cycling specific padded shorts/underwear, but I never bothered with those unless I was planning on riding 50-60 miles in any case. I think I will try the B17 next weekend and see how it goes, but my gut feeling is that the C17 Cambium carved is fine for about town type stuff, it is NOT good for any kind of endurance riding.

    • @FiveMinuteVelo
      @FiveMinuteVelo  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My view is it's great for long distance rides. I will concede however, saddles are a very personal thing. What one person thinks is great, another will think is horrible.
      Try this one th-cam.com/video/mJuSxkBfwBw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cfKnewIAUupjFZxd and you'll thinh the Brooks is an armchair 😆.

    • @tubularmonkeymaniac
      @tubularmonkeymaniac 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Had the same experience. Loved it on the MTB, so took it on a 130km ride. By the end my behind ended up bleeding. Combination of the width, firmness and surface texture me thinks.

    Helpful review, very clear - thanks. There seem to be two versions: natural rubber/cotton and nylon. Which was yours?

    • @FiveMinuteVelo
      @FiveMinuteVelo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for the feedback. Mine was the natural rubber version. I believe you can get versions with a denim type surface. I believe the material can start to fray and start to look a bit untidy with heavy use; although I don't think it is anything more than just untidy.

    just got a brooks B17-S Softened off ebay. I received it yesterday and rode it for the first time today, 30 miles, my butt is KILLING me right now but I'm going to stick with it. I was initially worried it was going to be too small for me I'm a guy, 6'2 and 185lbs but honestly it fits perfectly. I don't know how a regular Brooks saddle is supposed to feel but even with this one being the softened version it was still pretty stiff. I don't normally ride 30 miles, usually only about 5 miles a day so it's going to be interesting breaking this saddle in. I am going to try and get out and ride more just so I can get it broke in faster and who knows maybe I'll make it a regular thing riding long distances (for me) on my days off work.

    • @FiveMinuteVelo
      @FiveMinuteVelo  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well done! Hopefully the saddle is just emblematic of your body not being used to riding such distances. Don't worry, you will get used to it. I think the perceived wisdom is it takes 1,000 miles to break in at brooks leather saddle. Hopefully the softened version will be quicker than that. Keep me updated, I'll be interested to know how you get on

    DURABLE?? 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂ I have two of them. WIthin a year, the fabric peeled up from the carve are and both sides next to the carve area. The rubber where the fabric came off is full of cracks. The rubber got hard and crumbly. I have friend who has one and has the exact same problem. We both ride very long distances, so the saddles have a lot of miles on them. Still, they're supposed to be long-lasting.
    We live in Southern Thailand, so it's a tropical environment... meaning, it's always warm. There is no problem with wildly changing temperatures. The saddle is comfortable. I don't care about the price, but the quality is absolutely HORRIBLE!

      Living in the UK, I don't have that trouble with the heat 😁 so I can't test it in hot weather. I have used it in cold weather though.
      I believe you can buy saddled with her denim type surface, mine did not have this additional layer. My saddle still looks like new so I suppose it must be something to do with the environmental conditions - heat?
