When I was a little girl, my Dad worked on a golf course. One day he brings home 4 baby opossums! So my siblings and I had the job of raising them(the mother had been killed). We went in shifts at night to feed the little ones. When they got big enough, we released them. I would occasionally see one of them peeking out of a burrow or hollowed tree stump, just watching us(we had a lot of land at the time). She’s right-they’re smart. They always remembered us

I can't help it, it breaks my heart 💔to think of you releasing him but I understand... I'm like this with every rescue, I *always* want them to be protected and loved by their human ~ forever
Thank you for understanding 🙏 there's a lot of people that just want to keep these wild animals as pets for the rest of their lives not knowing they need to be out there. Of course there are exceptions, but not all of them are, we all have to let them go someday.

I understand things but I want safety, longevity, love & protection of each rescue and I just view it as better with the human unless their habitation is substandard for their proper care & wellbeing.

I rescued a tiny baby Grackle who's nest had fallen out of a tree - I had him for about 5 weeks & finally let him go out the patio door - he stayed for another week with me giving him food and one day he flew up on the roof, looked down at me & that's the last I saw of him. Bittersweet but he was ready & established. I love animals
It amazes me how if you love a wild animal from birth, that wild instinct doesn't kick in ....at least until they go in the wild full time. How does a force like love prevent wild instincts? This kind of stuff is what makes me believe in God. Evolution can't explain love or personality. 😊

And no, they just adjust to humans and depend on us for food + safety, so they never learn to hunt and wouldn’t fear us in the wild. That’s why it’s sometimes cruel to love on them too much as babies, they eventually get too wild to be a pet but too imprinted to be released
I see foxes in my backyard. One has lost almost all its fur. About a month ago, I believe I saw that fox with a littke more fur. Looked so hungry. I bought dog foid ( the good stuff) and placed it in my backyard. I will put dogfoid out, just like I put seeds out for the birds and squirrels and deercorn for the deer and sugarwater for the hummingbirds. My home took part of their space, time to give back. Have been doing this for many, many years now. Even wildlife needs our help.🤗😊🤗

I love possums. Every night we get the visit of Mr. Possum who diligently cleans up the left over food that we feed our community cats. I just love how well he cleans the dishes. The only American marsupial, a biological treasure.
Peppercorn! Precious name, precious baby possum. Possums serve a great service; they eat insects (mosquitoes!), fruit, mice + small mammals (+birds & their eggs 😞). Thankful this lady brought him back to health and will free him in the spring. Best wishes for a happy and healthy life, Peppercorn.
Not just food. He is used to sleeping in a warm, cozy bed, being protected from the weather, and having companionship. Poor baby will be so confused, and won't understand why his family abandoned him 💔

Aww. These are so sweet. I know animals are meant to be wild & free but these stories always make me feel like I would never want the animal to be out of my sight because I would worry about it. I wouldn't want to let it go. Release day would break my heart every time!!💔💔

Great rescue by your brother and you even got your license to keep and take care of Peppercorn but I'm sure you know you are his mom and when you release him he will come back.
Please don't just leave Peppercorn in the wilderness. You're his mom. It would break his heart and destroy his mind for you to just dump him. He needs to know where you are so he can visit & reconnect. He is no longer wild. You have domesticated him & he is a pet who needs your daily support to survive. Thanks❤
@tinaa.3146 --the wild beasts would kill him in a few minutes. Possums are very peaceful creatures --they stay real close to their homes & food source. They really are pretty defenseless against most animals--dogs, coyotes, foxes, bears, wildcats & even big birds. Peppercorn would be completely terrorized by the wildlife there.

Most young folks today laugh about the BIG HAIR most of us had in the 70's and 80's. But aside from just looking awesome, it also helps keep baby possums, like Peppercorn, warm. One more reason to bring back that style!
He's a sweet little baby. It's hard to send them off because we don't know what will happen to them but I think he'll be okay because he had a good mom helping him😊❤❤❤

Frankly if I were her and saw the possum was doing well under my care, I would not have told them either. Or I would have gone online first for info. I too find it ridiculous when an animal is doing well anyway, that the law says take it away to a new situation while someone 'gets a license' within 2 weeks. That woud be great for future rescuse but for one that is thiving already? Sheer legal stupidity....but not her fault.

I read the usual lifespan of an opossum was 1 to 2 years and up to 4 years in captivity. It doesn't seem right to release your little guy into the wild after being a part of your family. Good luck.
Can’t you at least give him to a wildlife refuge/center where he’ll be taken care of? It seems as if he’s too tame now to just release him into a world full of danger with no “mama” to protect him. My daughter & her kids are visiting this creature conservatory today & they were showing this sweet, cuddly adult possum. I just learned that possums never get rabies!! Anyways, thanks for saving his precious life!!
Please, PLEASE dont release him. He has no idea how to protect or care himself and he's too domesticated. If you need someone to take him, I will HAPPILY give him a forever home! I'm 100 % serious...please reach out to me if you need a home for him!😊❤

She did say that when he is outside, he acts like a wild possum...meaning he is digging around looking for food etc and is happy.

Screw that. I'd have kept him while I did the training. Not taking chances they tell me I can't have him back.

Thats an opossom not a possum, possums are marsupials from Australia usually a brownish tan color.
You cannot release a possum after you’ve handled it like that and tamed it. It will never wild up. It would be a death sentence for the little baby.

I read the usual lifespan of an opossum was 1 to 2 years and up to 4 years in captivity. It doesn't seem right to release your little guy into the wild after being a part of your family. Good luck.

Can’t you at least give him to a wildlife refuge/center where he’ll be taken care of? It seems as if he’s too tame now to just release him into a world full of danger with no “mama” to protect him. My daughter & her kids are visiting this creature conservatory today & they were showing this sweet, cuddly adult possum. I just learned that possums never get rabies!! Anyways, thanks for saving his precious life!!

There is no way in the world you can release this possum into the wild! He would be 100% traumatized and probably killed !
Please, PLEASE dont release him. He has no idea how to protect or care himself and he's too domesticated. If you need someone to take him, I will HAPPILY give him a forever home! I'm 100 % serious...please reach out to me if you need a home for him!😊❤
