They really do enjoy their food too much. 😂 I do "possum patrol" at work where I attempt to prevent vehicular casualties by being the first car in the area to scare them away from roadways. Opossums are wonderful!! A lot of people don't realize how beneficial they are to have around. Ada deserves a Mother of the Year award! She's such a sweetie!
@@michaellee2910 Possums eat grubs, which helps to keep your garden healthy. They get rid of much more harmful pests like cockroaches and mice. They're some of the only animals that prey on shrews and moles. No more holes in your backyard! They keep the tick population in check, with a single opossum eating about 5000 ticks per season! They're resistant to snake venom, and eat several species of poisonous snake. They rarely start fights, but they *are* opportunistic scavengers, and will gladly clean up any dead animals in the area for you. They also eat any leftover fruit that falls from fruit trees. This doesn't sound very important at first, until you realize that rotting fruit can actually be very damaging: it can spread brown rot to nearby trees, and it attracts earwigs, fruit flies, and the like. Additionally, they actually won't eat these fruits while they're still edible by humans--instead, they intentionally wait until they're no longer edible and then eat them just before they start to rot. Possums will also eat loose garbage, but will not usually raid trashcans in the same way that more destructive animals like racoons do. To top it all off, their body temperature is low enough that the rabies virus can't survive inside them, meaning that there's effectively no risk of contracting the disease from them.
@@michaellee2910 They basically catch all the animals that actually are harmful to humans and their surrounding like: - Ticks - Cockroaches - Rats - Snails - Snakes - Spiders - etc.

@@tothelighthouse9843 Of course! In perspective, it makes me feel especially grateful, as a human, to have all the basic resources I need right at my fingertips. Thanks for your kind comment!
Just a head's up: opossums *love* cat food but too much of it is very bad for them. A cat's diet is almost exclusively meat so food made for them is high in protein and only has the nutrients you get from eating meat. Opossums are omnivores who eat all kinds of different things so their bodies require very different amounts of nutrients than cats. An opossum whose diet has too much cat food in it will start to develop metabolic bone disease, a calcium deficiency that leads to all their bones softening. It's crippling and usually leads to death. I myself fed the wild opossums, skunks and raccoons that live in my old barn. I give them a lot of pet food in a mixture of 3 parts dog food for every 1 part cat food. That way they get the cat food they love while mostly getting their nutrients from a food made for an another omnivore. If you want to you the wonderful little opossum friends out with getting their calcium I've found they love cheese and yogurt. I haven't seen any of my opossum regulars develop any health issues and they all die of old age. I even had a little female make it past 3! That's equivalent to a human making it to 100.
@@BiggieTrismegistus Appreciate the tips and thorough explanation! Great advice for anyone with regular opossum visitors. Unfortunately, they don't come by that consistently so I don't think the food aspect will be an issue. They show up sporadically 4-5 nights in a row, then move on. Never to be seen again 🥲 Usually get a visitor every few months. Wish they stuck around

I used to feed them outside on my apartment porch. I loved watching and learning about them. They LOVE water!! And they eat mice, snakes and other rodents. They are a gentle animal and have more upsides than downsides. My 19 year old cat was also very curious about them, sniffing to see where they’d been and wanting to go down the steps to see one up close. Not at all with a raccoon, she hissed, her back went up and her tail fluffed!! So even she knew! Thank you to this lovely woman! ❤️
My cat was never the most friendly when it came to other animals, so I was surprised when he befriended a opossum and even let it eat from his food bowl. They really do enjoy their food too much. 😂 I do "possum patrol" at work where I attempt to prevent vehicular casualties by being the first car in the area to scare them away from roadways. I'll never forget this one opossum who was eating a squished frog in the road as I approached. Of course I stopped, but other drivers won't. Even after yelling at the little turd, it still wouldn't leave before peeling its precious road snack from the asphalt. This love of food isn't their safest quality. 🤦

Opossums are wonderful!! A lot of people don't realize how beneficial they are to have around. Ada deserves a Mother of the Year award! She's such a sweetie!
Name at least 10 benefits of possums.
@@michaellee2910
Possums eat grubs, which helps to keep your garden healthy.
@@michaellee2910 They basically catch all the animals that actually are harmful to humans and their surrounding like:
- Ticks
- Cockroaches
- Rats
- Snails
- Snakes
- Spiders
- etc.
@@magnusr3902 You are gullible if you think possums are fast enough to catch rats and snakes. But I know for sure those basturds got into my chicken and duck coops and killed my birds.
Those basturds kept tearing out my sidings to get inside my walls and make nests. And they bring fleas to my backyard. I cannot trap them fast enough.
This is what I wish to do one day, just being able to sustain myself in a way that allows me to help animals full time. What a great story... Best wishes to mama Ada.

@@marquamfurniture There is another species of opossum in Australia, and because they are cuter they're less treated as pest as in America.

You could make a nice little wooden house with old carpet, papers and material(Old towels sheets ripped) straw if able etc. and would help so much especially for the babies, I wish I still had a yard and lived like I use to.
@@manditoemya8478 in cold climates, please only use straw to line up the house, the rugs collect moisture and will kill the animal during cold temperatures... straw 4 strays... thank you 4 being kind!!!
You are out of your mind
@@Cani-Gulah Yea, feeding animals is crazy.
Yes, feeding potentially rabid wild animals is not a good idea. And you're not doing the animal any favors by having them dependent on you as a food source. Insanity
Beautiful animals and beautiful heart you have for helping them! I have been feeding a male and female that frequent my porch in the city every night. I made them a couple of insulated box nest in my garage that they spend time sleeping in. I love watching them on my video every night and hope to see little Joey's next spring time. I live in Wisconsin so winters can be hard and they need all the help they can get. They eat better every day than i do and it makes me happy they stay around. So sad they don't live long, kind of like my pet rats. 2-3 years isn't enough.😥
What an amazing woman. Thank you . I used to be terrified and now I realize that it is just the tail. They are fiercely protective of their young and great for the environment ❤
This woman owns my heart. Thank you for loving possums. 💖💖💖💖💖
You are a wonderful example of a human being. Keep helping animals! They sure need it!
You and Mama Ada are HEROES!! Standing ovation to your kindness and looking out for these babies. So proud of you. I feed my opossums that come into my backyard. I also feed the feral cats, woodrats, raccoons, squirrels that drop by.
I learned something today about opossums. They really are beautiful. Thanks for your kindness toward these four legged furry friends. My heart grew again today.
