I never knew I was sugar addicted until I tried to quit. yikes!
Ditto, when I started carnivore in February of 2024, I thought I was going to jump out my window. Chew my arms off, and I won't continue with what else.. After a couple of weeks, it had pretty much leveled out and by 3 months, and I'm pretty much no longer dreaming of show sugar and treats.
I used yo judge my brother because of his problem with alcohol.
Then I tried to go Carnivore...
Sugar addiction is real.
Most people dont know
Yeah it's rough, isn't it? If you wear a cgm, you'll see the spike and watch it NOT resolve quickly. That more motivation keeping me away from sugar
I can remember back in the early 1980s that I went on the Pritikin Diet which was sugar free. After 3 days I felt the same type of withdrawal as when I had tried to quit smoking.
When I went to lose weight the first time at 16, i was in a residential treatment center as a CPS kid so had little say in my food options or excersise routine. That said the place I was at wanted to do their own diet program but when I piped up about wanting to figure it on my own and only needing their support they agreed under the condition if I didn't work I did things their way. I looked at my eating patterns and realized I always got second or third helpings of carbs like rice, pasta, potato's, rolls or sliced bread. So I decided one serving per meal of those, seconds and so on were to be veggies and meat only. I went from 163 pounds to 111 in six months with that and hour long laps walking chaperoned daily, weather permitting. When I left there for a lockdown placement I lost the freedom in my diet and ability to excersise and shot up in weight. I've had issues since. Went on the OTC version of keto over 2 years ago along with intermittent fasting after a year cleaning up my diet and managing portion sizes. I'm currently not doing keto after hitting complications at maintenance but am still very low carb. During my 3 year health journey as a adult I went from just under if not over 300 pounds to 115. I'm currently around 150 and I'm only 5'2, and will be 38 end of this month. I'm a mom which also plays a role in my body composition needs. I have hashimotos and ibsd so I not only have to navigate low carb but low fodmap too. Still, after 6 months off keto I've gained very little back and definitely confirmed my carb addiction habits. I definitely not only have carb addiction but also have hormonal dysfunction and gut damage and absorbtion issues a contributing to my overwating disorder I think i may have and binge eating habits coupled with mental illness and a history of addictive tendencies. It's the ultimate cluster fuck ripe for any addiction, junk food and carbs just happen to be my drug of choice.
Good luck to you. You're facing challenges, but you are worth the effort to be healthy and happy. ❤
Attended at a management conference ~~ 1983.
Before getting into the main topic the speaker ( a 2nd for Lloyd Bridges in TV shows ) explained how he broke the smoking habit. This is an example that illustrates perfectly "replacement" concept.
In short he knew that smoking was bad for him so he determined to stop - but not "cold turkey, he was smoking 3 packs of cigarettes/per day
He determined
1) For 3 months he replaced smoking 1-pack and ran - he couldn't make a mile, but would walk-run a mile, then
2) For the next 3-months, he gave up the second pack and increased his running to 2 miles.
3) He said, "The easiest thing I ever did was to give up the 3rd-pack and run 3+ miles".
It works!
I'm seventy-five now and use the replacement technique - all the time.
Go and try ran when you are at work.
@@zperdek Sorry brother, I don't understand your reply.
One reason I very much respect Dr Rob Cywes is his believe in individual care vs. ‘standard of care’ or one-size-fits-all. He’s the type of physician I seek out and respect.
2 of my favorites
When I was overweight, I was on a *very* low fat but high carb diet. Went higher fat and low carb. Lost 17kgs extremely easily.
Sure. That can happen. Long term... You'll get fat again.
@@wallhagens2001 How many years is long long term? By the way, I was overweight quite a long time ago and I'm still not getting fat again. Actually the easiest period of my life to keep to a good weight.
I lost 50 lbs (using Wegovy). I went off it a year ago and switched to a low carb diet. Have not gained it back, very little exercise.
I was not addicted to sugar. I didn't realize that carbs were harming me until I quit my daily gym routine because I sold my truck and stopped going to the gym. I quit exercising. Three months into a sedentary lifestyle, I came down with a staphylococcus infection on the back of my scalp. My blood glucose was in the four hundreds. My blood pressure was 180/114 in the ER. The doctor prescribed surgery, antibiotics, Nifedipine 30 mgs and insulin as well as a 1800 calorie diet. The meds made me sicker. My blood pressure didn't go down despite the drug. 11 days I stayed in the hospital. They would have kept me longer if I didnt insist on getting out. When I got home I started determing which foods gave me the highest spikes. The foods were patatoes and rice. I cut them out no bread, no patatoes. I immediately noticed that eggs and bacon caused no spikes. Green vegetables caused no spikes. Blue berries caused no spikes. In fact, meats caused a decrease in blood glucose without insulin. I quit taking insulin and bp meds and a day later. I felt better. No ED, no vertigo and no constipation. I remembered that at my highest fitness I ate once daily and I ate meat and or broccoli. I currently eat once a day, meat and cruciferous vegetables. This nutrient dense diet satisfies me. Almost three months ago I started this regiment. My bp this morning 110/ 77. My blood glucose was 90. My goal eventually is to keep my blood sugar under 100 even after eating. My weight is down from 354 to 320. This is in less than 3 months. I am 58 and my youngest son is one year old. I intend to drop to at least 250. This is a true story. I dare not go to a doctor. The prescribed medicines have rendered me unable to purchase more life insurance to protect my son. I monitor my own vitals and I will never consider sugars and starches as anything other than poison again. I honestly believe the carb culture and the food pyramid is the most deleterious thing to human health in existence. The physician said to me " Consumption has nothing to do with diabetes" . The nutritionist said " A low carb diet is unsustainable". If years of training has taught them this I cannnot trust them.
I ended a 4 day water fast yesterday. I was trying for 7 but I started feeling nauseous and weak with a little headache. I broke it with a can of red sockeye salmon sauteed in butter and aftee 20 minutes into eating I could feel the energy charge.
Good job on completing a 4 day fast!
TH-cam channel DoctorsToTrust: I learned that we need 5 grams of sodium to maximize longevity. I didn’t take enough electrolytes during my fast and became very weak and the calf cramps were spectacular!
I finished a 21 day fast in April. Today I’m working on how to improve my next 21 day fasting experience. I want this to be a fun experience.
Some ideas that I’m thinking about:
I write like this is my plan but they’re only ideas for now.
I lost a lot of muscle mass. I’m going to use a glucose meter, distilled white vinegar and MCT oil to see if I can lower the glucose when it increases. I think this may reduce muscle loss.
I’m going to try to keep my gut active with a very tiny amount of food. Restarting the gut was a serious issue for me. To support the gut microbiome: Apple skin, blue berries and Greek yogurt.
I’m going to exercise by walking slowly to help maintain my metabolic rate. ‘Refeeding’ ie my first meal will be 75% of my low end caloric requirement.
Take care.
Were you replacing electrolytes during the water fast?
@@andredaedone5 I fasted for 21 days. Afterwards I realized that I wasn’t consuming enough sodium.
Today I aim for 6000 mg of sodium a day.
The world average is 4000 mg of sodium a day and ranges between 3000 mg to 5000 mg.
It’s been suggested that a strict carnivore diet requires more sodium.
15.55 g of Himalayan pink salt contains 6000 mg of sodium.
Consider a 3 day sardine fast before attempting a water fast to kickstart your body’s ketone production. This is supposed to make it easier on your body to transition to using your own body fat for energy during the water fast and hopefully lessen the chance of feeling fatigued.
I make a fish soup with sardines in water.
2 tins of sardines in water. I use the water from the tin for flavoring.
4 tablespoons of unsalted butter.
Salt to taste.
Take care.

I'm not overweight, I don't have any chronic issues. I tried keto out of curiosity. After I cut carbs my headaches and menstrual cramps went away 🥹 I will never exchange painless period for any sweets, bread or pasta! ... Now I'm trying carnivore. Since usually I experience bloating and gases after eating non-starchy veggies, I'm not afraid to die due to fiber deficiency 😂
Thanks to both Dr's for a really excellent talk :)
excellent show - both of you are fantastic!
I truly enjoyed the video, although I had trouble with the audio. At the top of my volume setting, I still struggled to follow the conversation.
Great cross over episode
Love that he expressed the reward of the sweets. We all have been in that circle. I can remember rewards of just one. Thank you for another video.
My autistic daughter is a fussy eater. She would eat sweets all day if I let her. I was guilty of introducing her to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on "healthy" bread 14 years ago. And that's what she eats when she gets hungry. I have also gotten her hooked on stevia chocolate r@w mi1k. That said, she also likes t bone steak, salmon, and scrambled eggs. I just need to make sure one of those are ready for her before she gets hungry. 52:10
Earlier this week I got a clip from Shawn Baker MD making a "carnivore pudding". It was based on boiled eggs that was blended with a couple of few other ingredients, and put vanilla to flavour but I suppose you could make it with berries or fruits. I boiled eggs this evening to make it tomorrow.
Just wanted to suggest it could be something a picky kid could like (I was very picky as a kid and liked food that many would think is bland).

Well done Doctors... Great insights!

Excellent discussion!
Good interview. It reinforces that I am on the right path. I am a stress eater as well but maybe not now. I had a hard drive failure and I left after I put the old drive back in to get something to eat. I ended up at the grocery store and left with a piece of salmon and the lowest carb chicken salad they had and most importantly no candy. I saved the salmon for the next day. I been working on cutting carbs since January 2024 after a hospital stay at Thanksgiving. My cravings seem to be gone. Some foods I have memory of but also they aren't as good as I though. How I plan on explaining my diet is with a book, "Keto friendly South Beach Diet" . It is pretty much what I was trying to do but explains the Science. If I mention the internet there seems to be a knee jerk reaction. We will see how a book by a cardiologist fairs. I try to keep my total carbs 50grams or under, that's the easiest for me and seems to work for me. After hearing this interview I wonder if I need to restrict further. (If the thumbnail pic looks fat that's me 80lbs ago. I'll update it one day)
You did well. Not long after starting low carb I learned that when we are stressed our body produces cortisol/adrenaline for fight/flight to keep us safe. This uses up the glucose in the blood. The body aims to keep only 1 teaspoon of glucose in the blood stream which is why after eating the pancreas secretes insulin to move the sugar out of the blood and store it for later use. This is why, when we are stressed, we can crave sugar and carbs, because the body has used up the ready access glucose and wants more; the body can produce this when we are fat adapted, but it can take a bit of time which might be why it was easier for you because you had to go to the grocery store, not to a nearby vending machine or cafe; you had time for your body to get some glucose. Once I learned this I found it easier to cope with stress and the desire to eat. I try to eat more acceptable foods, ie lower in carbs. Last year I had a car accident (everyone was okay) but there was a stressful period afterwards trying to get another car. One day it was really bad and I decided that I was going to treat myself: strawberries and kiwi fruit! It was a lot better than what I would have eaten in the past.
I magine living in a society where a solid majority is addicted to one thing or another. yikes!

Time spent with patients (and the worldwide race to obstruct access to time) is foundational to good medical practice
when to check fasting glucose if working graveyard shift?
Twelve hours after your last meal.
Twelve hours after your last meal.
Good question. I worked graveyards most of my career. My circadian rhythm was alwasys whacko.
I'm with Dr. Westman. Cold turkey is the way to beat addiction. I get it that sugar is addictive but the "withdrawals" only last 24-48 hours so a long drawn out incremental program is more likely to fail in my opinion. Sometimes I wonder if we shouldn't invest the medical resources on the people that are ready and willing to do the work and let the rest fall to the side or take meds if that's their choice.
In short, humans are obligate carnivores. We must have meat, fish, eggs, or dairy. We don't need to eat plants and are much happier and healthier when we don't.
I understand that in Rob's practice, weight loss is a major concern. But for any individual, extremely overweight person weight loss should not be their goal. Like the saying goes, "Without your health, you have nothing." Your health should always come first.
Counting calories will only cause weight gain. Many overweight people would have never become overweight if they weren't told they were fat in the first place. Today, most women want to lose ten to fifteen pounds no matter how thin they are.
There are vast numbers of healthy overweight people who would have been doing just fine if they had never gotten this ridiculous low-fat, plant-based, eat-less, move-more disinformation from their doctors.
I would be shocked if an extremely overweight person didn't at least lose some weight on a ketovore diet. But they should not have any goal weight. There should be no talk of a plateau. They'd be better off getting their own blood pressure cuff and going to "own your own labs" online.
Some may need addiction management, but most simply need to know that "humans are obligate carnivores. We must have meat, fish, eggs, or dairy. We don't need to eat plants and are much happier and healthier when we don't." 22:15
Sorry, doc carnivore does not have macro nutrient excess. The majority of diseases are caused by vegetable oil consumption. The problem with carbohydrates is that they can prevent you from losing weight. No matter how much health food you consume. Yes, we know carbs are not good for you, but it's the vegetable oil, that causes the real damage. The hateful eight. 31:46
Okay westman, Most junk food is vegan. I understand many try to give it up but that's not a prerequisite. 32:07
Okay rob. It has not been debunked. I'm pretty sure it would not exist without the schedule. But it has been found that roundup herbicide may be a contributing factor. Both in the diet the environment and the medication itself. 48:26
@@cag19549 Seldom true. And never true unless you know that humans are carnivores. Counting calories never ever works. Most fat people don't need to lose weight. Yes I know some emotion al eaters. But their biggest problem is believing they need to eat fruits and variables to be healthy. You can't force AA on anyone. You can only lead by example.
No, we are facultative carnivores, since we can digest plant material.
You don't even know the definition of the word you're using. The definition says nothing about being able to digest plant material. Only that the animal occasionally consumes both. Lions and tigers occasional eat berries, fruits, and vegetables. Animal protein (animal byproduct meals) sources have been used in dairy cattle feeding programs for years.
Humans can't digest plant material. Plant fiber goes straight through us. When we consume carbohydrates, we must turn most of it into fat. Otherwise, our blood sugar becomes toxic. We can only utilize that fat when we fast.
In the field of diet, there are countless made-up words with conflicting definitions. There is no animal better suited to digesting meat than a human. A human will die if it does not consume some form of meat or fish or egg or dairy.
We are healthiest when we consume no plant material whatsoever. We have a single chamber stomach and a very small colon. Even a cow couldn't survive on the cr@p we eat.
@@gribbler1695 Correct.
@@rawmilkmike A cat is an obligate carnivore. If there's no meat to eat, it will die. If a dog has no meat, it has a survival back-up where it can eat some plant food. It can survive on that until meat is available again. Therefore a dog is not an obligate carnivore. Humans are like dogs in that way.
Nice talk again, carefully disentangle possibilities..
People laugh at me when I tell them sugar and starch is addictive.
how can I be a patient of Dr Cywes? I live in Canada. Blessings
50:19 Have you seen the food for babies/todlers (for the age when we introduce food)? It's all hight carb mashed vegy junk 😭 I guess I will do like our ancestors did -- chew meat and give it to my baby from my mouth 😂
Okay, I read on another website, Zoe Harcombe PhD (she's an obesity researcher) this exact quote re: South African toddler dietary guidelines,
"This also amused me as it is very similar to the south African toddler guidelines that turned out to be so favourable to Professor Noakes at the tweet trial. The south African guidelines were “From 6 months of age give your baby meat, chicken, fish, or egg every day as often as possible. Give your baby dark green leafy vegetables and orange coloured vegetables and fruit every day.” Notice the emphasis on nutrient-rich animal-source foods for toddlers, with grains listed last if at all, and then wonder why this changes once the age of two is reached."
So I guess babies age 6 months to 2-years-old are given the most sound diet advice 😂😂
I used to have those fruit purees when I used to do long-distance runs. But if you look at it they are almost like those old people candy that was like slightly dried marmelade! If one would heat them to evaporate some more fluid they would be just like those candy. And some give their toddlers several of those packs per day. It must be like a fructose spike straight to the dome piece (as The Cynical Dude would say).
But you should not chew food or such for the baby. The bentist (there's a channel called that, it's not misspelled) say that babies does not have the oral bacteria that can cause cavities, but they get them when mum test the grade of the food or fluid, or clean a pacifier by putting it in her mouth first.
Too difficult to comprehend.
I just looked up Society of Metabolic Health Providers and can't find one in California. How about Los Angeles? Can I find a doctor here to go and talk with about these issues? Carnivore/Keto Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, Metabolic Health?

Ask these doctors where to get clean meat - poultry - eggs - pork to eat. On Netflix there is a study where they used 4 sets of twins one omnivore one vegan. They also showed the industrial farms where much of our meat - poultry etc is raised and it's disgusting. It really confused me. I was ver thin. Walked and did yoga every day then I took an awful drug for pneumonia. I suffered torn meniscus in both knees. Two surgeries. Because I couldn't keep up the exercise as normal I started to gain weight. Then I fell broke my patella tibia. Gained more weight. I can't get it off. I eat once a day. I don't drink pop. I feel lost and don't know what to eat. God Bless
Keto unfortunately makes the number of my PVCs very much worse. Like 4 to 5 normal beats and 1 PVC, going on for hours. The way to stop that have a little sugary snack.
And yes they are a miracle. And no they are not you know what. But even if they were, "you know what", you know what is also safe for water purification at the same dosage. 52:11
No question about addiction being real. As Cywes maintains, sugar is a drug in the addiction sense. Is why I went to see him because I knew sugar was my emotional crutch, not to mention he knew about being obesogenic
Great content, but would love you to use a proper microphone. gracias senore

This guy does not represent what weight loss needs to look like? And saying ozempic works only as long as your doctor manages it. And these docs will prescribe it and just leave you to your ability to use it correctly! And that will work great with people who are overweight and who could not manage what they were eating to get overweight in the first place?! So using something like ozempic where you will lose weight right off and suddenly something is working and trust me those like that will not want to stop something that seems to be working! That is where the problem starts.
