When my children were young ( I fear I’m much older than you) we didn’t have much money. I took this as an opportunity rather than a limit. Picnics in the back yard under a large shade tree, finding unusual rocks at the river, camping and fishing and just enjoying the outdoors. People forget, you don’t need money to have fun. Pop some popcorn and layout a large blanket. Then kick back and watch the stars. My guys have never forgotten our experiences together. So go on, learn to catch a frog or grow a plant….you’ll be building something more special than you could ever imagine. Be well❤
@@Karen-lo5oiSame here as I had 5 brothers and No Sista’s we made our own Fun 🤩 playing baseball ⚾️ walking to the Beach 🏖 swimming and soft shelling and Clams we never were bored 😐 we had each other and neighbor friends life was so Beautiful 😍
My mum raised 7 kids alone. Supper picnics on the beach on hot nights, a lot of porch time together reading ,card playing, and music! We had to start work early in life to help keep the family together. Those memories are still cherished❤. Chores build a smart child👍. You and Stu have a beautiful, smart, happy bunch😊. JO JO IN VT 💞
I love that you have summer brain work for your children. Trust me, after being in education for over 25 years, it makes a difference. They will be more confident, independent, and diligent.
Our children need to learn not only the reading, writing and arithmetic, we need to give them life skills. They are proud of achievements in the kitchen etc. Our boys also did their own laundry. When our youngest married, we were invited to their home one evening and my daughter in law was excited to show me what her husband, our son gave her. What was it? A complete listing of how to do laundry. Water temp, amount of soap etc. Her mother never taught her. A great moment for me as the teacher to my son.
We do unschooling so nothing is scheduled, nothing feels stressed and everyone is relaxed. Screw schedules :) We have a small farm, large garden and kids, it all just works out because we all naturally know what is needed! To each their own!
Being a part of a homeschool community and co-op makes it a little challenging for us not to have some form of a schedule. I wouldn’t say it is so strict that it isn’t flexible when needed, for example around harvest time or spring planting. But we have benefitted from trying to build in some healthy routines.
@@theelliotthomesteadA good thing about when we're kids is that we have bags of energy that needs to be directed at something. I was making miniature gardens at about 10 years+ and helping mum in the garden. I was always an outdoor kid playing in the garden with my weebles making little homes in the moss and stones. We never lived on a homestead or farm but my parents did teach us kids the value of hard work, washing and drying up, vacuuming, cleaning the cars etc. It is a much undervalued thing in this day and age.
We worked hard on the farm growing up but also had lots of time to play and read and my parents would plan fun free events so we did the same with our children. Everyone helps we had a saying “ he who doesn’t work doesn’t eat.” We didn’t home school so just being home was great. My girls cooked and baked and the boys helped with the dishes unless they were working hard with their dad.
Thank you for the summer house comment!!!! Story of my life! Told the inlaws yesterday not to expect a clean house till october or november! hahha! Your schedualing and organizing sound amazing... we are little more half-arsed but out in the garden and having fun/learning with the kiddo makes the dirty house tolerable and acceptable in my mind!
You are such a blessing! Sharing the wisdom you have gained over the seasons, so many good thoughts and strategies ❤ Just wonderful to hear. Thank you Shaye
I love the notion of savoring the season as well as the food produced during that time of the year. There is something so wonderful in looking at my meal plate and being able to tell what time of the year is by the food on it.
Great video. My teacher husband used to get our children to work on a skill or 2 over the summer holidays. I remember my son picking juggling one year, practicing his afl kicking (aussie football) another year. My daughter picked crochet and walking handstands. What they picked was always interesting and by the end of summer their skills were noticably improved.
So happy that you're teaching cursive writing to your children! My grandchildren are learning it in their Catholic school, but many public schools no longer teach cursive.
Yes and it is horrible they are not being taught anymore. It takes away our individuality. computerized everything is going to ruin us. It already has.
While your children enjoy Summer reading, don’t forget that we should be doing it ourselves!!! Whether it is a cookbook, a fun novel, or a book of poetry, I try and find a little time every day to enrich my mind as well. (It does help that my kids are older). Lovely thoughts, Shea!
Thank you Shayne for such a needed and lovely reminder and advice. I think we get stuck in routine and hustle, a that we forget to take in the passing moments that make such a fruitful and memorable season.
You are doing a great job Shaye. I'm impressed with the way you have scheduled all these things including the fun activities for you family and teaching the kids to cook which is so important. Both of my sons are excellent cooks. Discovering a childs gifts and abilities and promoting and encouraging those things is important. Thier interests can be so different from their parents too. My husband and I didn't grow up with computers and both son's excelled with this. It's a good thing because I needed a lot of help along the way.
This was a wonderful video and really helpful. I would love to hear more about how you structure your days and time for work/life balance as someone raising children at home and building your business and property. We have a two year old, a one year old and one on the way- building business and trying to renovate a home and I'm finding we really don't understand well how to have balance in this and not just feel constantly burnt out. Thanks always!
We do something we call our "Phineas and Ferb Summer Adventure Challenge". Basically, we try to have one adventure a day, whether that's having a mini-bake off in the kitchen or taking a hike; or a bigger adventure like a trip to the river or a theme park.
Your right 😊I have to schedule time for fun /garden /canning/freezing/drying/ chickens /meat and egg layers takes up most of my time 😊 FUN HERE WE COME THIS SUMMER 😊😊 thank you
I always felt that my job as a parent was to raise responsible adults. Teach them the skills but also include down time to read, explore and to let the imagination run a mck
I love this, I in many ways do the same with my boys in the summer months, they have the same chores as during school days, they have a bedtime not as early as going to school, we also have plenty of fun. I make have a weekly meal schedule, Friday nights is always pizza.
I remember as a young teen helping my mom can pickles, peaches and jams etc. in the summer. Your children will look back on summertime. Good memories!!!
I LOVED this video. Very helpful, especially the kids advice and remembering to savor the season. You were well spoken and enjoyable to listen to. Thanks 😊
Love this. Sorry I'm late viewing this video and a few others but I need it right now and gradually trying to catch up. I wish the organisation came more naturally for me. There are times when everything must be super organised but I simply can't sustain it. Finding out I'm neurodivergent has helped me to make some sense of this but I still find your videos really help motivate me to get back on track. ❤ Happy mid-summer to the Elliot family.
We definitely go through seasons of more organized and less organized. We have to get ourselves back on track often. It is helpful to have encouraging sources of inspiration to motive us to get back to it. Hopefully that's what our content can help with. Thanks for watching!
Love this video...but hard time concentrating because I'm distracted by the fireplace. It's not the rustic stone one seen earlier. Love some info! Ty. Love your home!
Does it really matter if the earth is flat or round? I personally think it's round but at the end of the day, we are here and we are alive! I don't care how it all works but we have WAY BIGGER ISSUES TO DEAL WITH!!!
Do you let your kids make decisions about what is going to be served during their kitchen day? Or do they just help and learn? I would love to do something like this with my 9-year-old son but unless he is head cook and experimenting with ingredients and making his own recipes he doesn’t want to have anything to do with it! 🤷♀️

I grew up being 'shooed' out of the kitchen, and not allowed to help in the gardens... so this is probably why - as an adult - I dislike both.

Thank you for reminding me that there are always chores
