A question about how to tell different sources apart.
Starting with Warhammer Fantasy Role-playing Game I found detailed content seemingly describing a later era in Bretonnia.
It had a weak king (Charles de la tête d'Or) and a powerhungry cardinal of Shallya similar to one in the three musketeers. A lot of intrigue and it seemed the old ways were dwindling. The lady replaced by new gods, nobles prizing their bloodlines but not their old traditions, hints of vampires taking over and even the whole Lady cult being a scheme of elves guiding but also controlling the humans.
I now realise most of this is from an older retconned edition or fanmade material.
How much of the above is true, is there still some secret lore for GM's to know and players to find out? I did watch a guide on Total War for Wood Elves and sad but true, having the Bretonnians as ally or rather shield was the key to victory.
Related to this question, is there a dark vibe (like 40k)? In that setting there are no real (100%) good guys, only war? Are gods of Shallya (healing), Myrmidia (War), Taal and Rhya (Hunting and Nature) holy and thus good? Or more neutral, allowing greedy, selfish or even evil priests in their ranks as long as they are not corrupted by chaos?
On the other side, can Necromancers and Vampires be good and help the living against Chaos or other threats?
PLEASE dont include all the Endtimes and AoS nonsense until the last video. Honestly the whole "The Lady is actually an even goddess who is making an army to defend elves" really ruins bretonnia.

Yeah, I think I'll keep both Wood Elves and Bretonnians to be good guys.
In my campaign there will be some factions (greedy bourgeoisie, foreign spies) that will try to corrupt nobles, gain power and discredit the old traditions. The story of the Lady being fake might be just the type of lies they spread!
It could be the elves set up the grail cult unintendedly. I assume one in 10o humans has minor magical talent and one in thousand can actually become a serious magic user. It was a safe plan to recruit these humans and teach them to use magic safely as they lack the colleges the empire has. But I'll treat the lady and grail maidens as a separate faction, allied to but independent from the elves.
I may include various clans of independent elves (wild eoves, sea elves, ice elves and elves refugees kicked out of Reikland). One of these groups will be Dark Elves, to be rolled for later. (Keeping it a random surprise, so I can't give spoilers. 😄) There may be good and bad vampires too, who will want to recruit from Grail Maidens either because they are worthy enough or to corrupt them.

It's strange how the armies of Chaos and Greenskins helped unite both Brettonia and The Empire in times of crisis.
yeah united against common enemy , its probably working in our world too if only there are some alien attacks or something

Not strange at all, pretty much what happened every time a common enemy appeared historically. That's why wars a popular recourse for failing governments (*cough* Argentina and the Falklands *cough*)
They also united Vampire Counts and Bretonnia.

The founding of Bretonnia maybe one of my favorite of Warhammer origin stories: the idea of crusading knights plunging into the heart of darkness to create a new kingdom is so thematic that it gives Bretonnia a lot of weight in its history.

Neither is a long dead barbarian chieftain (Sigmar), who might have accomplished great things, of course, but even worshipped another god for himself (Ulric). This fact carries the seed of religious civl-war, as it already happened in the Empire. The Lady is relatable, she appears to some chosen Questing Knights, Sigmar on the other hand only appeares as Valten (?) during the final weeks of the End Times.

Bretonnia is by far my favourite faction in the Warhammer universe. Love the culture and lore!
It's a shame they made them a weaker faction in the Total war series. Though I still play them!
I'd say they are a mid tier army. They are also my favorite faction and the one I have the most victories on.
I tend to just build all cav army's with Bretonnia on Total war (occasionally I might add a infantry with a grail relicary when the enemy has a lot of anti large) tends to work for me.... Very micro intensive though

They are far from being weak, hold the line with some peasants and outflank everything with ground and flying cavalry :)

Bretonnia is just amazing. Thinking the bretonnians can stand enemies as beastmen, greenskins, wood elves, norsmens and even the empire itself only with pride, honor, war horses, lance and swords, arrows and farmer items, whitout gunpowder or professional infantry, it is absolutely remarkable and admirable. Does Bretonnia employ hedge Wizards or is there such a thing “Mage Knights”?
Generally there're the damsels who supply the magical support to the armies of Bretonnia. Though in older editions you had regular male wizards, either educated in private or in one of the Imperial Colleges of Magic. Though in later editions, 6th onwards, that changed a bit to mostly just the women being the magical focus of Bretonnia.
All those who are touched by magic disappear, apparently kidnapped by the Forest Elves. Sometimes, a few girls will reappear to serve the sorceresses of Bretonnia and, in time, become sorceresses themselves, all serving the Fey Enchantress.
@Katamari Roller The relationship between them and the Wood Elves concerns me.... what do they do with the men with magical affinity?
@@fumarc4501 I believe the men with magical affinity actually do become "Mage Knights", but they mostly stay hidden as an emergency option when things get truly dire, and this may have changed through editions.
@Nico Godinez also that Green Knight! Has to have some magic behind him... like what the Wood Elves do to embody their Hunt God, I theorize.
never really liked the accent in the total war game, but recently decided to start playing. In terms of lore it's really fun to play and unite bretonnia (especially with the legendary lord workshop mod added)

Awesome story telling and epic music towards the end! Gave me the chills portraying the sheer epicness of the Grail knights and their devotion to the Lady. A shame this dream team fell apart cos the Bretonnians couldn't stomach the revelation that the Lady was really Lileath in disguise and abandoned her.
Always happy to hear from our allies in the south, tough it of course has to be made clear that they are in no way equal to the brave sons of Sigmar, some of whome I hope have already fortified this comment section in the name of their God.

I like how Bretonnia is a compilation of all sorts of Feudal Age European civilizations such as the French, Britons, and German Teutons. They reference a lot of others too The Empire which is based off the Holy Roman Empire. The Orcs and Beastmen remind me of the Mongols and The Huns because the way they are known enemies by The Empire and Bretonnia. Norsca is pretty much Vikings on steroids.

@@BaronVonMott Sigmar's story ends with him wandering off to a bunch of mountains and leaving the Empire behind. Gilles le Breton became the first grail companion which basically made him a demigod who died fighting to unite his people. He also comes back in his people's darkest hour and even fully returned to lead the brave knights of Bretonnia during the Endtimes, to come face down the forces of Chaos that threatened all of humanity. Sigmar didn't even make an appearance in the Endtimes.

Oh, so that's what happened to Bretonnia... They became the blighted duchies and the lady of Kankerwahl is the lady of the lake, corrupted by Nurgle.
I mean, they drink from the fly-blown chalice, a grail of Sargasso studded with wriggling maggots, a 1 for 1 representation of the grail knight banner.
If you mean in AoS, it's pretty strongly put that the Bretonians turned into the Flesh-Eater Courts. No sightings of Tomb Kings even if Ossiarchs are meant to be the skeleton warrior race niche.

Take me for a fool guys, but I try to get as close to a Grail Knight irl as possible. That means:
-nearly daily physical training
- an open heart and mind (to absorb positive aspects from others)
- the will to always become a better self
- stick to the people who help you on your journey through life and stay loyal towards them
- be sincere, do not be fake
- stay away from negativity, which could be so-called "friends" e.g. (could be translated as influence from Chaos lol)
And yes the music used in the video might have had an impact on me and why I have written all that

Do you also beat up peasants and maim them for being poor?. I mean you can't be a grail knight if you don't do that. It's kind of part of the job description.
@@kuropotato8097 I think you take Grail Knights for Realm Knights. They are not the same however, except they both hold the title "Knight. Grail Knights have ascended to literaly living saints. They do not interfere with mundane, worldly struggles, which can be both good and bad. On the one hand they do not bully peasants, but on the other hand they do nothing to help them. Grail Knights only answer the call of either the King, the Fay or the Lady herself.
Realm Knights are far from being a Grail Knight. Even though they have literally earned their spurs when they were still a Knight Errant, this quest pales in comparison to the quest for the grail. Many knights do not even try becoming a Questing Knight, instead they are satisfied with their current social position. And since there are always bad examples in no matter what regard (religion, sport, humans in general), there are some Realm Knights who abuse their position to oppress peasants. Those Knights who actually care for their people may also aspire to go questing for the grail, because their intention, sense of duty and their heart are purer than the hearts of the ordinary knights.
We still have to take into consideration that peasants tend to be treacherous though. I read a theory once that when the Bretonni came into modern Bretonia, they submissed the local human population and made them their servants / peasants. This might also be the reason why the lower social classes (every class under knighthood actually) do not worship the lady, it is more common for them to worship Shallya or Manaan. Grail Pilgrims or Battle Pilgrims do not believe in the lady either, they rather hope to get a glimpse of glory of a living Grail Knight. (I mention that in case you bring them up to disprove me)

They Don't beat peasants not because its dishonorable, but because they see them selves above interacting with such "creaturs". I get what you are saying but I think you need to find a different role model. You know, one that doesnt exist in a warhammer world since most characters are either evil, or gray leaning toward evil.

I like how the various cultures of men and elves have to unite under a cultural banner of sorts (the honour of the Lady for the Bretonnians and the laws of Sigmar for the Empire) to find the strenght to oppose the dark forces of brutality and barbarism. It's a good metaphor for the costant strife between humans and the destructive parts of nature and themselves, as they would prevail if not for the incredible courage and nobility of our species.
