    I have shown many many ways to use Blend If. So many that I made a whole Playlist for it on my TH-cam channel. Here is another one for you to add to your notes if you are keeping score, Blend If and Dodging and Burning.
    I have been on a huge Dodging and Burning kick since I released my latest installment of the Dodging and Burning series on f.64 Elite. Dodging and Burning is one of the best ways to really get into your image and sculpt the light to your liking. In my opinion, there is no other editing method that makes me feel more like an artist when I am pushing pixels in Photoshop.
    However, Dodging and Burning can be quite harsh. Sometimes the brushwork that we apply can hit the highlights too hard when we burn or the shadows can become almost ghostly looking when we dodge. So how do we overcome that?
    With Blend If. Blend If will allow you to taper the burn effect on highlights and the dodge effect on shadows. The result is a much more natural final product free of tonal streaks.
    In today’s tutorial, I will show you how to accomplish this. Also, be sure to check out the latest Dodging and Burning Course on f.64 Elite. It comes equipped with a killer Photoshop extension to make dodging and burning even more fun than it already is!

    Your tutorials are in a superlative class of their own!!!
    Many thanks from a near octogenarian who only discovered the full joy of photography after his recent retirement and has had the pleasure of applying your shared knowledge, creativity and love for this very special art.
    Kind regards,

    Blake, Great video on Dodging and Burning. I had an issue with one of my images last night and this video solved my problem. I just found your tutorial below and plan to purchase it. Your techniques are very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time to teach.

    Thanks Blake for that "color overlay" tip. 💯

    Hi Blake, I use this exact method to Dodge and Burn, but I then group the layers and add a luminosity mask (mostly when doing portraits) to control it a bit more. However, I never thought to use the overlay to see clearly what is getting affected. That was brilliant! Thanks for the tip!

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! Luminosity masks and Blend if are almost the exact same thing really. However, with Blend If you are not creating a stagnant pixel-based mask. Blend If is always fluid so if any tones change under it, it also changes based on the values underneath. I had to train myself to think differently with Blend If, but it is far less destructive than LMs, even though LM's are masks they are pixel based masked and more often than not a "one off" kind of thing.
      Just a different perspective for essentially the same thing. Glad you liked it!

    Blake, we have a spare room at our house, and my wife and I want you to live with us. I have a home office/photo studio, so I think you'll find lots to do around here. I just think this will help my workflow. Breakfast and laundry services provided at no cost... (BTW, we live in Maine, and the phrase "wicked good" is already part of the vernacular, so you'll fit right in.)

    Hi Blake. I’m late to the party with watching this video, but thanks still. Wicked good technique and awesomely explained 👍🏻
    To prevent potential color shifts by the curves layers wouldn’t it be best to switch them to Luminosity blend mode?

    Please do another video on Dodge and burn with curves and the Blend modes to choose and when. I Always use luminosity Blend mode but i see some teachers preaching Normal Blend mode but My Sony and lens choice makes pics too saturated if i use normal. Please help as you are One of the more transparent teachers acc to me

    Coming back again with more questions. For some reason i always come back to your videos. I use blend if for micro (small patches) dodging too. Not just macro as used here. What is your opinion on that? Many thanks!!

    Hi Blake great tutorial on blend if and Dodge & Burn . Can I use this method on videos ?

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, no. A video is a series of still images that are everchanging. Dodge and Burn only work on a single pixel-based image. As things move the dodge and burn effect would not look right.

    Don't use opacity and flow by 100% for brush. Try may be 20/40. And also use pen with pressure sensitive.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep those are all thing discussed in the course. I didn't realize it wasn't pressure sensitive here until after I recorded it... gotta love those wonky Wacom drivers!
      In the new course i cover a lot of stuff on brushes too. Opacity, flow, and even building custom brushes for finding and burning.
      Thanks for your input here!

    Ehhhhhhhhh....I give this a thumbs sideways........it seems to be more of one of those perfectionists kind of things. Like, you shot it fine originally. Maybe show something with a more extreme change so that we can see what you really changed.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disagree 😁 I love the internet! Haha
      Seriously though, there is always a need for dodging and burning. I think it is the most critical step in your workflow as it admits you to sculpt the light in the image. I can see your point too, though, but DB is always important!
