  • Control the Light with the Amazing "Horizontal Curve" Technique in Photoshop! Discover the most natural way to adjust the brightness of any area without disturbing the colors, using a simple straight Curve.
In this tutorial, we will use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and combine with a Curves adjustment layer to create a "Light Map" that would allow us to control the amount of light all throughout the image. Hope this video helps. Thank you for watching :)

Hey guys! So what's the difference between this method and using a Curves Adjustment Layer with Luminosity Blend Mode?
First of all, thank you so much for your question. It's a great one, and I would have had the same if I were you. To know the difference, the best thing to do is this: Using the Horizontal Curve method shown in the video, move the points on the extreme left and right, up and down (as done in 11:32 on the extreme left). Then, do the same with just a Curves adjustment layer with Luminosity Blend Mode. You'll notice the difference straightaway of how subtle and natural this method is. However, if you are looking for something extreme and a little more manual control, you should go with Curves with Luminosity. There are hundreds of ways of doing the same thing in Photoshop, you need to find out what works for you :)
    Best Wishes! And Keep Creating!
    - Unmesh

Nice dude! I use curves on luminosity blend mode to edit brightness without effecting colours, but after a quick test this method actually preserves much more of the colours - where my original method actually de-saturated them slightly. Also the changes on soft light are more gradual so it feels more controlled.

This is an amazing way of changing the luminosity without affecting the colors. Just a small thought I had while watching this video. Can I use this technique to locally dodge and burn the skin while retouching? This way I might not be affecting the local color hue changes and can only manipulate the skin luminosity. My favorite things about your videos is they explain why things work, how they work, and then at the end you summarize which helps me actually learn it

    Thanks for the video.
You look like a CG character for some reason. Something is very uncanny... Plastic surgery? Weird Framerate? Lighting issues? Filter on the camera? Combination of all of them? Weird...

Thank you Unmesh, for explaining in great detail the concepts behind different layers and how to work with them. It’s the only way to fully understand working with Photoshop (and similar software). And your way of teaching those concepts is absolutely great :) Ditch the books and start watching Unmesh!
