Next time, to take the flan out of the mold; you can cover the top of the mold with a plate and then turn the whole thing upside down. That way you don't risk breaking the flan when flipping it onto the plate ;)

I was hoping to GOD that someone was going to say this. I don't bake a lot of upside-down things, but I do make breakfast stuff with eggs that I have to flip on to a plate and then slide back into the pan.

Tania it taste like a creamy wet custard with coconut, vanilla and caramel. It’s delicious! I recommend it. It’s an Acquired taste, some people don’t like it because of the texture of the dessert. But it’s yummy, especially when made right.
I’m just here because Maya is beautiful. Who cares about the flan. Her Spanish has gotten way better by the way.
The flan needs to cool down to set, it's better after few hours in the fridge 😉 for the rest it was fine I think

hi maya I always enjoy watching your vids but I just wanted to say how much it means to me to see you go through this ~journey and learn Spanish etc. As a Puertorriqueña whose culture was largely taken due to the same old colonial bullshit, it’s very moving to see someone else work to reclaim their heritage in a way that’s authentic and meaningful for them. So thank you for doing this, for trying, and for showing us all that it’s never too late to learn and heal! xx

Girl I UNDERSTAND YOUR STRUGGLE. I'm a halfican who was never taught Spanish and have been teaching myself throughout my life. My Spanish is about exactly as good as yours except I know a lot of medical words because I'm a nurse.

I appreciate you doing some of the video in slow Spanish. I am also learning Spanish so hearing you put together sentences slowly is very helpful for me. I have also mixed up Celsius vs. Fahrenheit while baking before, it all ends up working out ❤️

Flan is probably one of the easiest things to bake. You legit caramelizo the sugar- throw that into the mold. Then vanilla extract, 5 eggs, 1 condensed milk, 1 evaporated milk, cream cheese for a creamy texture if you want and stick that into the oven without the water or with the water or even on the stove with the water and bam after an hour you got yourself some flan!
My abuela made the best flan! It's tough to perfect it so don't worry

You can tell she’s surrounded with dominican/puerto rican people because she changes her r’s for L’s and thats not a mexican thing
Edit: I correct myself, it’s no rolling her r’s, it’s making the L sound instead of the R sound

This is so cool to watch! The Filipino way of making flan (at least the way my family makes it), the egg (yolks only) & milks (evaporated + condensed) mixture is poured in cold. We heat the sugar in the metal flan pan over the stove, let it cool & harden, and then pour the eggs & milks mixture in. Also not a water bath, dad uses a huge stovetop steamer & cooks it that way.

My mom makes delicious flan, a recipe from her mom when they lived in Vietnam. She uses eggs, water, & condensed milk due to French influence & lack of regular milk at the time.

My mom's flan recipe
Ingredients
1 can(12 oz) of evaporated milk
1 can(14 oz) of condensed milk
12 oz normal milk
6 eggs
1 cup of sugar
In a pot heat up sugar until caramelized and then carefully pour into a ramekin
Pour all ingredients into a blender and mix until completely combined
Heat oven to 325 F
Pour mixture into the ramekin
Do the baño maria as shown in the video
Don't know if anyone told you... but with flan and quesillo you have to wait for it to cool completely (better if you put it in the fridge to chill) before you take it out of the pan

I normally put all the ingredients in a bender and bend them until they combine. You test it by poking it with a knife, if it cuts cleanly it’s done

You keep practicing and putting yourself out there Maya. I think you should try to make buñuelos or churros? Café de olla would be good too

I love flan... I make it here and there. The recipe I use is a lot more different. It has more ingredients. Like condensed milk and evaporated milk, no cow's milk.

Tips: refrigerate it before flipping it and use a silicone spatula to remove the sides from the bowl.
Try making Alcapurias or Croquettas or Bacalaitos or Mofongo or Mangu or Majarete or Colombian Beef Empanadas.

WHAAAT FLAN IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE DESSERT
Don't worry if the caramel gets completely solid before you add the custard. When you cook it, it becomes liquid again. Or if you're using an instant mix custard, because you pour it over the caramel boiling hot, it also works and stays liquid when you serve it. Don't worry about your spanish not being perfect when you speak it. It is very difficult to become flluent in a second language. But eventually, speaking in that language will be completely effortless, I promise.

OK. So to make it come out nicer. Flip your plate over and place on top of your ramekin. When you have the seal tight flip the plate under the ramekin and lift off the ramekin. Tonta.

next time if the caramel gets hard, just take a bowl of hot water and put the pot on top pf the bowl and start mixing lol
