I have been really wanting to make tamales for a long time since I cannot find any place they sell it here in Japan...but I was always scared of the massive works that I might need to do alone. Now today I have the courage to do so, thanks to querida pocha concha Maya!
My family buys pre made maza at our local hispanic marked and we add cottage cheese, a can cream of corn, and some knorr (chicken bullion). It helps with the dryness.
In Sinaloa we also add Chile to the masa. It adds so much flavor and color to it. Congratulations Maya, I’ve never tried to make tamales on my own but I may give them a try
My family being from Mexico old school. I'd always beg my grandma to help make the tamales or even food in general. And she would always say no. Its "womans work" then one year she finally let me learn and after that we would cook everything together. I love that woman. Taught me one of the best things in life. Hace todo con ganas y amor mijo.
Maya I was gonna come for you in the comments bc you made us chicanos/tejanos look so bad (plus use masa) but I also applaud you for doing it by yourself and making your abuelo proud
😍😍 ¡Yo también soy pocho! Lololol A little tip, if you use Masa Harina (like Maseca) instead of corn meal, the Masa should work up easier. Although, I don’t know if i should give out tips cuz my wife says my tamales are still not as good as los de mi tía 😭😭
shortandstuff oh nice that’s really good though! Congratulations, wish me luck cause I think this year I’m going to try to make some tamales this year but my family is Guatemalan so I’ll be trying Guatemalan tamales and they’re super complicated
In my family we use the leftover masa & make sweet tamales. Just add sugar & red good coloring to the masa & in the center you can add dried figs or raisins.
In Bolivia we have a version called huminta. We use fresh white corn (no GMO corn!!!!) , smash it it on the batán, a round flat stone and a half moon shaped stone. We season that dough with anís, sugar and salt, some people put cheese in it, some don't, half are cooked in boiling water, the other half in the oven. Many variations according to the region and every household.....
It all about the Manteca. My aunt in Mexico showed my mom how she makes hers. And its been full proof. It literally All purpose flour, Manteca Inca, and some hot water that was boiled with tomatillo skin and a pinch of salt.... but my mom has yet to show me. 😕 so I can’t share ratios yet.
First, I want to say: YAY!!! you did it!! Congratulations!! :D Now, I have to say: but you used the wrong corn meal! lol. The cornmeal you used is mainly for baked goods like cornbread. There's a different "corn meal" that is used for tamales. That's why it didn't taste quite right and was grainy. Masa seca is ground much finer. But hey, in the end it was edible and everyone loved it and that's all that matters.
I cannot thank you enough for your videos. As a pocha myself, I feel so seen! I have struggled with embracing my mexican heritage especially as someone who is very white passing. I feel like other latinos and even other white people will judge me if I speak my-not-so-perfect spanish and go all out for my dia de los muertos ofrenda. Keep it up!
I’m Pakistani & Australian but I feel your pain & I’m sick of it! I’m sick of having to fit inside of 89 000 people’s highly specific definitions of Australian & Pakistani. I’m both, in my own way, deal with it! Best of luck to you! 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Oh my god those look so good maya you Rock. I do have a little bit of advice when making the masa you need to use hot water and add some of the sauce from the meat into your masa so they won't come out dry and make sure to soak/clean your corn husk other than that great job on those tamales maya your abuelo would be so proud of you
Mexican tamales are made with maseca and Mija, the masa didn't float cause you were supposed to mix all that sh*t up with your hands. I loved how pleased your friends were with your first tamales. Also, god bless your Abuelo and his kick ass recipe! xoxo
Love that your grandpa was there helping out, and f***ing with you in equal measure. Because you had him on your mind. ❤️❤️❤️ Also, thanks for this! I like seeing a recipe from someone who actually has a traditional recipe. I will prolly come back to this to try out tamales next time. But wow, all day task, tho. I do have maseca in my house for all my corn flour needs. And that might have been less corn-y and less gritty. Not sure if your g-pa used corn flour or corn meal? Next time I'm adding chiles! Actually now that I think about it I have dried guajillo peppers in my pantry. Imma see if I can find your recipe. If not, any way you can share some of it? Like obv not for the masa, but maybe the seasoning for the meat? Thanks for this video!! Say hi to your grandpa for a fan of his recipe!!
I am 13 and I made tamales with my Tia and mom and as we were making them I learned a lot about my culture and I also learned a lot of chisme with my Tia.
My family would be disappointed if I use pre made flour for tamales. It's never the same lol. But I get it, when I was in the US (10 years ago) It was the closest you can get to actual masa de maíz.
Girl, I love you, but please tie your (gorgeous) hair back! (Sorry - food handling course coming back to haunt me). The tamales look amazing by the way. Great video!
Being from Guatemala, Corn husk tamales have always been a foreign concept to me. I’m just sitting here like: “where’s the banana leaves? Where’s the maseca? Where’s the milk?” lol
This is literally me when I make tamales. I learned Spanish later in life like Maya, but when I cook, I speak Spanish to myself like I’m channeling my bisabuela or something 😩😅
Not to come for u in the comments (lol) but I think the graininess is cuz u used corn meal instead of corn flour🙃
Bobby Mireles I was about to say lol she needs Maseca!!!
I was going to say that lol
LOL SAME THOUGHT
Bobby Mireles I could not believe no one said anything or noticed lmfao like where is Norberto?? 😫😤

Is it bad that this is my second time thirsting over that guy in the black long-sleeve? 😂

shortandstuff oh nice that’s really good though! Congratulations, wish me luck cause I think this year I’m going to try to make some tamales this year but my family is Guatemalan so I’ll be trying Guatemalan tamales and they’re super complicated

My mom makes diet tamales! Instead of lard, she uses olive oil. Instead of beef, she uses chicken or turkey.
