I have the Torin 5's and really like them (even though the tongue issues...). But for me, Altra needs to up their build quality for the price. I've had several pairs of Altras over the years and they almost always come unglued in the midfoot between the upper and sole. Great review.
We appreciate your support! Unfortunately, we haven't had the Torin 7 long enough to do a durability test on them. However, their construction on the new 7 feels superior to the previous couple of versions.
Same happens to my Topo shoes. Maybe because I have narrower feet going into a wider toebox.
I’ve seen this from so many reviews. I own exclusively altras for running. Make sure to always get a size that leaves two fingers in front of your toes. That can help with durability too.
My Torin 5s starting delaminating under 100 miles of *walking*. Also, it fits a size smaller than the Lone Peak.
I am reading this long after you replied. Just like you, I love the Torins. I have had 5 pairs including the gimmicky but fun IQ. I fixed my tongue issue in the 5 and I still use them as my everything shoe, though I don't run in them anymore. I am 230 lbs and the sole is still the perfect balance of soft and firm. I love the width and the feel of all of my Torins. The 5 is better than any other shoe for my money. But I have the exact same issue. Holes started to appear in the material very early in the life of my 5. They look like they were blasted with buckshot. On all of them the soles started becoming unglued. But I am a cheapskate and stuck it out and running in them with the floppy pieces of sole dangling every which way. I want to try the 7 but I feel like I am in an abusive relationship with Altra. I love them for all of the good things they give me, but I hate them for all of the bad too. If my shoes and I were on a soap opera I am certain that I would be mad at the shoe, and the shoe would be mad in return and slap me in the face and then I'd slap the shoe in the face and then I'd turn to leave but I couldn't and then I would turn around and there on her hands and knees would be the shoe begging me not to leave and we would embrace and I would kiss the shoe passionately, like no shoe has ever been kissed before and then cut to the next morning. Me and the shoe would wake up on my bed tied into a deep embrace and then I would make breakfast but the eggs are too hot and the shoe burned her tongue and we would laugh....I guess I am saying I will buy the 7's.

You sold me on the Torin 7s. I tired the Torin 6s and Paradigm 6s on back to back. The Paradigm felt way better in terms of cushion, but I don’t need a support shoe. Glad to see they matched the stack heights this year to make their max cushion neutral shoe actually max cushion.

Think I'm on my 3rd or 4th pair of Torin 5s. I am totally stoked about the way you describe the 7s. I have not been forced to buy the new version for awhile, but think I will do so based on your description. I might have them in time for Grandma's! I don't remember which Torins were my first but the reflected light so much that the almost glowed and they were like clown shoes compared to my brooks because of the nice wide toe box! I've been a convert since then! Thanks!

Sounds like a great upgrade…. Even as a walker I’m looking forward to it. I’m the one that asked you for advice recently on the Olympus Via, and it is my favorite over the wide Torin 6 but this will likely find its way into my closet. Great vid as always. I also have been/had been (maybe) one of Torin Ride or Die Tribe, but I’d also starting trying some of their higher stack height shoes - the Paradigm, even the Olympus. After having toe surgery a couple of years ago and discovering Altra shoes, the brand has been truly my salvation to running. Started with the T5 and then the T6 and others, I started to realize the higher stack heights were actually for how my foot felt mid-run, which was contrary to what I was expecting. So then I started going back in stack, to where I am now w the Rivera 2, and really loving those. Tried an Esca 3 - and it wasn’t great, really. It seemed that what my foot needed was and not really more cushion.
So - all that to say - would the Torin 7 be flexible with its 30mm stack and EgoMax midsole…? This is what I ponder…

I have found the depth of the Torin 7 to feel very similar to the Torin 4. The new Torin 7 will feel a lot more familiar to you. Hopefully, you will like the shoe as much as I did!
I love my 6 but I am with you with the “not enough in the toe” so the T7 sounds a great update!

Great review, thank you! I had the 4 (awful shoe), 5 and am about 1/2 way through my 6s. I don't mind them, but have some minor toe volume issues on occasion. I'm generally not a big stack height runner, alternating with the Escalante, but look forward to picking up a pair of these to try out.
The Torin 4 and 4.5 Plush were the best of the line for me. I loved those shoes, got 600+ miles out of both. I passed on the 5 and 6 due to the negative reviews and increased cost. I am excited about the Torin 7 and will give it a try. I do think it's a little overpriced though. Would have been great at $135-140 imo. I'm hoping the Escalante line will be adjusted back to more like the 2 and 2.5. The E3 was a totally different fit and feel, sent them back.
The Torin 4 was my favorite of all time. This 7 is the best one I have tried since the 4. I hear you on the price, but I will say when they melded the Torin Plush with the Torin, they had no choice but to raise it up some. Now that the Rivera is out at $140, the Torin kind of needs to be priced at $150 to keep the prices consistent with the cushion levels within their models.
I still love and run in Torin 4's. Have tried the Torin 5 (had to cut the tongue down) and the Torin 6 (not much improvement over the 5). How can Torin make the kinds of mistakes the have made? I may try the 7 if the have some better color schemes. Otherwise I will permanently switch to TOPO.
@@reth54 Since I retired my Torin 4 and 4.5 plush, I have been using the TOPO Magnifly 4. Its 0 drop, 25mm stack height, wide toe box, responsive zip foam mid sole and excellent build quality. I really like them. They're going to give me a lot of miles.

Ran through 2 pairs of Torin 5s and 1 pair of Torin 6. Love them all. Good to have a zero drop in the quiver for those easy days. Definitely looking forward to the 7s…

Shoe companies need to figure out a way to produce a higher volume option. I dont mean wide or extra wide but actual depth to the shoe.
Completely agree. I have a slight bunion on top of my big toe knuckle and most shoes rub on it and make it worse.
I'm wearing my 6 wide!! 😊. I use them for daily walking at work and anywhere. Happy to see this in a wide version and can't wait to get them in the mail from RunM.

I have the 5 and had to cut the tongue off. I want this version so bad. I’m so happy they have made a good iterations. I need to get back to running! Thank you for this great review!

Had some foot issues and was pointed to the Torin 6. Really liked it, but not perfect. I don't run in these. In fact I don't run anymore, just walking daily. Had them for about 10 months.
Pro: 1) Doesn't try to force my foot to do anything. 2) Soft enough that the bottom of my foot doesn't get hot spots and the EGO MAX material has lasted really well . 3) Wide toe box helps with my slightly curved foot and keeps my heel off the inner side of the shoe.
Cons: 1) Material is almost worn through where it bends (between arch and toes) 2). A few of the tread bits are coming unglued. 3) After wearing them a few weeks, noticed that the back of my heel hurt when driving. Turns out the curvature along the back of the heel was good on one shoe and straight up and down on the other. QC wasn't watching the moldings that day.
I'm excited to give the Torin 7 a try with hopes that the material and construction hold up more like my previous Brooks Glycerin and less like the Torin 6.
On a related note. No hesitation on recommending the Altra Lone Peak 7. Awesome shoe that scrambled all over Acadia National Park, even over slightly wet rocks. Grippy-soft enough without worrying about stone bruising too much. It's not a Gortex shoe, so I stayed out of the creeks.
I have the 5 and 6 and never had issues. But this is exciting.

Which Altra do you think has the widest mid foot? I know it's a running shoe company and they want to provide a good lockdown, but sometimes i find the mid foot too restrictive/narrow. And the volume of the upper is a bit too low(too close to the top of the foot). Thank you! Awesome channel!
Just got my 7's from your site and am super excited to put some miles on them. I wanted to drop a note on sizing since it wasn't mentioned in the review. The Torin, for some reason, runs smaller than its peers like the Paradigm. I found this to be true with the 5 and the 6 and ordered the 7 in a size 11 in hopes it would be consistent. I was not disappointed. Usually, I'm steady in a 10.5 (both Lone Peak & Paradigm are in this size). At least it is consistent, but buyers may want to bear this in mind, especially if ordering online. The 11s fit fantastic. I really like how the heel sits in even more snugly than the 6.
How are they holding up so far? One of my big issues with the six was it durability the cushions started to feel like it was going flat after like two months…. I know how many brands have been updating their phone technology. I’m not sure if they did that here, but it would be awesome if they did… so I’m just curious have a holding up.

I had to go half size up in the FWD Experience as my big toe was hitting the end. Do you recommend doing the same for Torin 7 or is it more true to size?

The Torin 7 is a substantial update to the Torin 6. The fit feels true to size, the tongue doesn't poke your ankles, and it feels more like a maximum cushion shoe. Let us know what you think of it when you try it out!
Just recently was finally able to get my hands on a pair of Torin 6. My shoe size and Japan don't get along.
Now I see this video and at first I was like, "dang... maybe should have waited, but I do need them for my race in two weeks, so yeah...". And then you say there is more stack height and I'm like "Oh god, glad I got the Torin 6 still!". I don't want too much stack height, unless I'd go for something like the 369 Ippon Blade, but then we get to a whole different ballpark of running shoes.
I feel like my shoe pile would go "one of us" to this one. 😂 I loved the Torin 4s, those and New Balance Rebel v2s are my favourite shoes I've ever ran in. I got the Torin 5s, but they are really collecting dust as I find myself grinding every ounce of life out of my 4s instead.
this is my first Altra shoe. i've been training with this shoe for a half marathon in a few weeks.
It's one of our favorites here in the store! The plush cushioning with the wide, foot-shaped toebox is super comfortable and makes it a great choice for someone new to the brand.
So excited. I hoarded every pair of the 4.5 plush and still sitting on multiple unworn pairs because the 5 and 6 were garbage. Looking forward to trying these out.

What amazing foresight. I went through 3 pairs of 4.5 plush, wish I had bought more. Agree 5 is garbage and 6 is only slightly better.
Update. Absolutely despise this shoe. Heavy as hell. Stiff. Too high stack height with zero ground feel. Ego max is trash compared to Quantic. I am super disappointed and have found 2 more unworn pairs of the 4.5 plush, thankfully! I don't understand what altra is doing anymore

I have the Torin 6 wide, and love it! Will absolutely get the 7. Also have the wide Lone peak 6. A third wide option from Altra is an insanely welcome surprise. Can't wait to find out what it is! Really hoping for a fast and light road shoe...

Which one you use more on daily commuting? Lone peak or torin? Is it true to size?
@@ryan_chaka I actually use the Lone peak for both trail runs and daily commute. The Torin is better for walking for me, but the upper just seems too fragile for daily use. I already sent a pair back because they came apart down by the sole on the inside. Great for running though :) The Torin wide is wider and fits me better than LP wide. I guess the LP fits true to size, while the Torin should be ordered half a size up, in my experience, at least in the wide models. Hope this helps :)
I had 2 pairs of the Torin 6, they started great. They began to lose some of their liveliness quickly tho and had durability issues on the fabric. Both pairs developed splits in the top layer on the inside and outside at the ball of the foot where the shoe flexed. Thankfully, Altra took care of both shoes under warranty and I didn't have to get the exact same sheet to replace it. Ended up with the provision and the paradigm which were a better fit for me in the end.
All their foams die super quick
I picked up a pair in the orange red color. They’re bouncy and fun. I also tried out the Via and immediately returned them after the first run. They were terrible.
Been running with Altra since 2015. Get somebody from Nike to pick their colourways.
I have both the Torin 5 and 6 and, honestly, I like the 5 better. I prefer the tongue on the 5 also. that being said, I’ll inevitably get the 7 just ‘cause. Thinks for the review!

Torin 5's have been my go to for years. Perfect for their versatility for running but also walking and really just everyday activities. I'm going to 7 in hopes it's a lot like 5 but maybe more durable and even more comfortable.
We have found it is definitely more comfortable. It has more cushion underfoot with 2mm of added stack height compared to the 5. For the durability, we haven't had nearly as many quality control complaints about the Torin 7 versus the 5 and the 6.
Great review. Looking forward to the Torin 7 and hoping it can bring me back to Altra. Loved the 4 and 4.5, but they lost me with the 5. Fit was a major issue for me. The tongue was bad, but it wasn’t horrific for me like others. There was a weird plasticy overlay near the toe cap that felt like my toenails were constantly catching on. Does the 7 have a gusseted tongue? Any overlays on or near the toe box?
I should have mentioned in the video - it is not a gusseted tongue. I also feel no plastic overlay piece along the toe box. I know what you're saying but I think you should be good here.
I have every Torin since the first one and I never ran version 5 or 6 because they just didnt feel good on my feet. I love version 4.5 and still run them to this day. The version 7 looks like the Altra Outroad which I have also and I like that shoe so if it's like the road version of that shoe the I know I'll like it
I have Outroads too and these are much closer to the 4.5 Plush than anything else from Altra, at least for me. If you liked the 4.5, this should be a slam dunk for you.

Good stuff! I've had many Torins over the years. The 5 I actually enjoyed. Never had any tongue issues....I usually wear thicker socks, maybe that helped. I wore it for the Marine Corps marathon last year. Felt great. The 6 I have not enjoyed so much. Even just walking around, it feels like too much padding around the heel and overall cushion. Like I have to work harder just to walk because my foot is too stuck in the shoe.
That's interesting about your experience with the 5 vs 6. I would say this new Torin is going to be softer so if you felt like you had to work harder to get moving in the Torin 6 than the 7 may be more of the same. Glad to hear the tongue didn't bug you in version 5. Altra suggested folks wear thicker socks to help so you were all over it.

We're going "chili red" or "bright red" or "orangish red." It's not like a true red as I envision.

I've frankly had too many qc/durability issues with Altra over the years. I've since moved to Topo with great success. I'd love to see you carry the Topo lineup... a possibility?
We've looked at Topo a little but there is only so much room in the shop and we really like our brand lineup. We are always exploring other brands out there but for the moment, we are staying strong with our current brand selection. I will keep an eye on them for sure though.
Great review. I have loved the Torin in the past, however the past couple versions have really been lacking. Sizing has bee an issue and the tongue was not good but I made it work. You said that this is one of three shoes that Altra will be offering in wide. I know that they have offered the Torin, Lone Peak in wide in the past, what will be the other shoe? So does it feel as "flat & unresponsive " as the olympus 5? Which is a great trail shoe but far too stiff in the sole as a road shoe. Great videos as always.
My first Altras were the Torin 4 and I loved them and bought 3 or 4 pairs. Honestly, I'd buy Torin 4's for the rest of my running life, they were perfect for me. I've had 2 pairs of the 5's that I love less (the tongue is terrible), I had to size up from Torin 4s. I didn't think of either as maximalist shoes. I'm concerned that with the additional 2mm of stack height, the 7's are getting kinda fat and slow. If I wanted Hokas I'd buy Hokas. Is there a shoe that is the more minimalist version of the Torins? I see people who liked the 4's seem to like Topos. Or do you think the 7s are more like the 4s despite putting on some heft?

The wide was still too narrow. I ended up with Saucony guide 17 in wide 😊.lots of room
I had a few runs in these--the laces come untied a couple times every mile and they are tight and uncomfortable even though there is space in the time. I run on my forefoot and after a few miles or less, I feel like I am eating the sidewalk. I would return them but got them at the beach. I measure a size 8.5 and got a size 9. I wore 8.5 in Provisions. I changed the laces, tried inserts, etc. New laces helped but the toe push off does not have any cushion. I feel more comfortable in less cushioned shoes. Perhaps the cushion is in the heel. These are some of the most uncomfortable shoes I have ever worn for running recently.

I wear an Outroad as my knock-around shoe all the time. I wore it with a suit around Christmas (one of the best perks about owning a running shoe store is that you are expected to always wear running shoes). We're recording our review on version 2 very soon!
Hi. I bought the Torin 6 on sale to get a feel for the brand. Its a good shoe to allow for a natural stride but my always aching metatarsals don't want to road run in these - dirt trails/running track feels great. I wonder if my next purchase should either be these 7's or Olympus. 7's have a bit more cushion and volume...but much more?And Olympus are reportedly too hard/clunky. Maybe the Olympus trail shoe might be better than Via Olympus for me? I have wide feet and weigh 200. Thanks

Question : what’s the difference between the altra torin 5 luxe vs torin 7? I’m a E width and flat feet. Any insight would be appreciated
Thanks for watching! The Torin 5 Luxe has less cushion and a thicker, more premium upper. The Torin 5 Luxe is designed more for lifestyle/dress wear rather than running because of the upper. It isn't as breathable and gets very hot when running. The Torin 7 has more cushion and is designed as a running shoe. It's more breathable and has a higher stack height. We find the Torin 7 fits wider as well.

Interested in this update, been a fan of the Torin since the 4.5 (tongue didn’t bother me). Any word on the Escalante and if they’re softening/lightening it up any?
The Escalante 3 is here to stay for another year. Sadly, I've seen Altra models through the Spring of 2024, and still no update on the Escalante.
These shoes have gotten so firm over the years. Even with the stack height, it just feels less plush as they used to. How do these feel on the first run, like running on wood blocks or is there a little give this go around?
Much softer. I love running with one of each version on my foot to feel the difference side by side. The 7 is much softer. It's a truly plush ride.
tried these at my local running store today and i was surprised how good they fit in the front(i have very wide feet) but found the heel very tight. Would you know how much wider the heel is in the wide version? My local store did not have the wide version for me to try on.

Need help. Just got Provision 8 sz11. I have a big toe bunion but it’s more on top of the knuckle than off to the side. They are way too tight there for me. You mentioned these have more depth, would you say go 11.5 in the Torin 7 or 11 wide?
Dang it. Lost me at "more plush". The Vanish Tempo was too plush for me. What I want is a road-going Mont Blanc. To me that shoe is faster than the Tempo and doesn't have that mushy feel. Ive had 23 pairs of Altra and love many of the trail models but can't fall in love with a road model yet. Had to switch to Topo Magnafly 4's. Please Altra, give me a road going Mont Blanc.

So I read that the wide version has the same width foot bed just a wide more volume upper. Is that true? Never worn a Altra but debating on this one or the wide
Is the midsole just a compression molded EVA like most Homs shoes? What is the midsole made of?
Can anyone comment generally on a standard wide vs. an original fit? I have so many issues getting things wide enough so that I don't feel like I'm stepping on the outer edge of the mid-foot area even though I don't have a super wide foot overall.

I’m sorry to hear about the wider heal, another compromise so the shoe will accommodate more foot types. This whole Torin thing has been a disappointing downhill slide. The 4 plush was perfect, the 5 and 6 have major issues and I know since I’ve run through 7 pairs. I wouldn’t mind paying $160 for a pair of running shoes if they didn’t fall apart before 150 miles. I tried the Paradigms and hated them I thought the arch was terrible. Timp 4 fell apart the first time I ran in them. Altra was making great shoes then something terrible happened, my guess is corporate culture is the culprit.

Exactly! I've spent way too much on Altra shoes over the years only to be treated as an unpaid beta tester. Just read some of the reviews on sites like REI - multiple photos of rips, tears, delaminations and prematurely worn out-soles. This company seems to no longer have any regard for its customers. They were bought out a few years ago and the quality of their shoes have continued to accelerate to the downside. I simply no longer trust Altra.
I've got the unfortunate situation that I am growing out from Altra's range. Width is not enough. 280mm long feet, but width isn't enough and they start to push on my big and little toe. At the moment I use Escalante 2.5, but I can't have them for long since the edge of the shoe push on my whole outer side. The heel is also too narrow so I get bad pressure which cause blisters on the outside heel where outer sole edge contacts. Wide torin doesn't work and now I am going to go for a long shot on the altra via Olympus. Probably will not work, but it's my last go. The trail version didn't work, already tried.
Do you know any shoe that could work? What's wider and got more toespace than Altra?
The only wider options I know are Ahinsa Chitra xWide, and Softstar Primal Runamoc. Those are barefoot running shoes though, so no support or cushioning. Might take some getting used to, and will require gradually strengthening your feet to handle longer distances.

That's a tough situation. The Via may very well work for you then. I found, at least for me, the wide Torin and LP were not wide where I needed them and it made the heel too loose for me. The Via has a nice padded heel and lots of toe room. I would be optimistic about the Via. The Paradigm 7 is due out in July and that has a wide option. I have not tried the wide version yet, but that may at least be another option to try from Altra.
Altra torin 4 /4.5 my fave since then Altra gone down hill in every aspect that I gave up on them, the sizing lol so random too.
They have certainly made it easy to get frustrated with them over the years.
Man, that tongue on the 5 was terrible. Can’t believe that Altra still released that thing. On the Rivera 2 but think I’ll pick this up soon to use alongside the R2

I've enjoyed my Torin 6's, which I ordered here online when they came out, and am definitely going to get a couple of pairs of new 7's as soon as they come out.

I'm a 340 lbs guide that walks about ,4to,5 a day. Question is altra better equal to the new hoka.
Sorry, but u not covered 2 important topics: a) toe box width...is it more narrow vs torin 6? B) midsole is same firm like in Via Olimpus? Stack height could be high, but the could be bricks if foam is not good...i believe everybodh complain on via olimpus....with torin 7 is same story or not? Thanks
Like version 6, this is also a standard fit, but the 7 fits wider for me. I think this is partly because of the depth. The Torin 7 is also softer and more plush than the Via. The Via 2 has a softer midsole compared to the current Via, but I find that this Torin 7 is softer than both Via versions. Not at all bricks!

Altra offers the Torin 7 in a wide width. If you feel like the standard Torin would be too narrow, we recommend sizing up to the wide. For the rest of Altra shoes, you will be looking for the "Original Fit".
What about the weight? I am asking because the Escalante 3 became heavier than the 2.5
I completely forgot about the weights. They are 8 oz for the women and 9.8 for the men.

Now, I just want to point out that when you said it was hard to compare Paradigm with Torin saying "this is a max cushioned shoe ... " it is not. Paradigm is max, Torin is not so the comparison between them is not like a Brooks Ghost and an Adrenaline.

Aw...and here I was hoping for a Vanish or Rivera, with the width of the Torin Wide. I'm sure the Paradigm is great, but I just don't get why no company wants to be the first to release a light and fast extra wide shoe. All you can get above 2E is heavy and cushy, or you have to go for barefoot shoes, which is a bit extreme for some. It's kind of frustrating.
Is it okay to use this shoe for trail?
While we don't recommend using the Torin for the trail, that doesn't mean you can't use it for trail running. It will wear down faster if you use it on the trail. If you are looking for something for both trail and road running, the Lone Peak and Superior would be our recommendations.

Yes, this shoe would work fine for people in the healthcare field. It is classified as a maximum cushion shoe, so it would help you feel comfortable on your feet all day. If you have any ankle/knee/hip issues, we also recommend checking out the Paradigm 7. It's the same maximum cushion category, just with added support.

The Arahi 6 is here to stay through at least 2023. My guess is they'll update it around February 2024.
