  • Hey girlfriends (and guy friends too), Ronnetta Griffin of Iron Disorders Institute and founder of Get Your Iron Up invites you to come along for a behind-the-scenes look at IV Iron Infusions! In "The Girlfriends' Guide to Iron Infusions," Ronnetta takes you through her own personal experience over the course of six days for four IV Iron Infusions to treat her Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA). Hopefully, it will help you know what to expect and how to prepare if your doctor orders a series of iron infusions to combat your low hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels. She shares important information to know, questions to ask, tips to remember and even suggests some items to pack in your tote bag for the day. The experience won't be nearly as frightening when you have a girlfriend who will tell it like it is!
    ***
IDA can lead to heart failure, so be sure to learn more and see your physician and ask for a full iron panel! You can order one online at www.ironology.life.
    ***
For more information, go to www.getyourironup.org or visit www.ironology.life for Ferritin Boost, the new iron supplement developed in 2018 by Ronnetta and her team of iron experts!

My iron levels are currently at 3 ng when they should be between 38-100. My last dr told me to take over the counter iron... fired her and new dr has me scheduled for several infusions. Also eat ice like no tomorrow.

I had my first iron infusion yesterday. (Venofer) They did not give me steroids, benedryl or zantac. They just hooked up the Saline first to the IV then they added the Venofer. Afterwards I was nauseated (I did not eat breakfast before I went, lesson learned) and I got a bad headache. The site of my IV hurt and felt very cold. This could be because the vein rolled as the nurse was inserting the needle so she had to dig around for it and the iron and saline are very cold. The nurses were very friendly and helpful. One even baked goodies for all the patients getting transfusions and chemo. I was thankful for that! Today I have felt dizzy and tired with the headache still pounding. I will have my infusions once a week for the next 6 weeks.
I am glad I found your video's and learned about your organization. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much! Yes, the protocols for infusions are changing and I think they are mostly given without steroids or antihistamines now. (I used to take a Claritin before mine.) I'm so glad I found your video. I have battled anemia for more than 12 years and am only now finding a doctor who wants to do something about it other than iron tablets. Those make me so sick on top of barely being able to function. I will have two rounds of iron infusions soon. I just met with the hematologist yesterday for the first time.
All the other videos I found were mostly horror stories about the experience, or they didn't really give any good insight on what to expect.
Thanks for telling it like a girlfriend would.

Great documentation of your experience. My iron levels were 2-4. I cut out all GLUTEN which blocks absorption, and my iron levels went back up to normal! It was a gluten allergy that was causing me to chase the symptoms (iron infusions) and not tackle the cause - Gluten. All is well now...as long as I avoid gluten which can be challenging. Iron infusions were a temporary "fix" for me.

My doctor asked me to try taking an over the counter iron supplement again, although he does know that I have tried it before and they make me feel very ill. So glad to have found this video. I’m getting my first infusion in the upcoming weeks. I love the take of this topic, creating something more personal and comforting. I’ve had to do a good bit of research on low iron and how to treat it in the past several months for a potential job. This has been a draining and often discouraging journey and I have yet to come across something more informative and nerve easing as this video. It was crazy seeing all of the similarities and realizing I’m not alone but that there’s a whole community going through this at the same time I am. In addition, I loved hearing the part about your dad being a diabetic and growing up around needles because my dad is also a diabetic and I grew up always having to be pricked to check my glucose. I definitely believe that it contributed to my fear of needles as I got older. The good news is that I’m gradually facing my fears throughout this process and am slowly overcoming it! Anyways, thanks so much for making this video and good luck with getting your iron where it should be!

I always get cold whenever I have any kind of IV. I kind of figured out that the reason why is probably because the IV solution is at room temperature which is usually much lower than body temperature. So when you're having that cool liquid pumped directly in your veins it tends to make you cold.

Thank you, this is so helpful. I wish I could get an iron iv. I've been a vegetarian for 25 years....and not the healthy kind. I developed a strong taste for cola and coffee and just wanted to share my experience with others. I have a ferritin level of 10 and realized my insomnia, adrenal, and thyroid issues were related to my ferritin. They say that "pica"...the taste for dirt comes from being iron deficient and craving dirt...I realized my diet coke habit stopped when I started taking iron. Colas and coffee kinda taste like dirt to me. I have had bad experiences with iron supplements where my adrenals felt like they were going to bust....but found Pur Absorb Iron good and recently started doing "frozen liver pills" because they say copper/zinc/and iron are needed in order to increase ferritin iron stores. They say 80-100 is the Ferritin level to achieve. What I also understand is your Hemaglobin and Iron level can be good but ferritin low...if ferritin is low you're anemic...this is me. Had to share....and if you're doctor says you're within range...research online.

I'm supposed to go for my 1st infusion and I'm already considering not doing it. I already cancelled all of my November appointments. I feel there is something so unnatural about putting blackish sludge in your body. I decided to try dietary changes first with organic supplements of iron, folic acid and b12. After 4 weeks I'm not as fatigued,my period wasn't as heavy and I feel overall better. I have a little over a month before my first December appointment and I'm determined to change this naturally. I also don't like the idea of steroids in my body at all. I have steroid puffers and rarely use them. When I do I'm wired for hours and hours and I'm often awake like that for well over 30hrs. I truly believe anemia can be changed by altering your diet to include more leafy greens.

I had Benedryl in an IV and it kept me awake ALL night, was hoping it would help me sleep. The worst night ever, this was in the hospital after having "minor" brain surgery. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who was hyped up instead of relaxed. I have low iron and wonder if this infusion would do me any good...?

@@lzjz5679 - Thank you for asking. It was a bit of a mess both times that I want, my body didn't tolerate the infusion initially and I "lost my stomach". However, I was able to get through them, and my blood count levels are back up. I have to go back to my doctor in a few weeks to draw blood again and pray that things are normal still. If now, we have to figure out why my counts continue to be low.

Hello I went this morning and got my infusion done. My appointment was at 8:00am I got there around 7:30. I was called in to see the nurse about 7:45. The nurses were all very nice. She gave me Tylenol in case of any fever which I didn't get. Then she ran saline first than steroids and the test iron. Just that alone took about 2 hours. My iron infusion was supposed to take 5 hours, but when my nurse read my chart she informed me that my hemotologist recommended it only be done for 3 hours. Overall it went well. I got a really bad headache and I've been feeling really tired and weak.

I had my first fusion yesterday, February 13. When you had your fusion did you have a funny taste? I tasted celery, I mentioned it but nothing was said. I’m scheduled to have 5 minute fusion once a week for 6 weeks. Also I had a B12 injection yesterday, today and tomorrow. Thereafter once a month. I’m curious why your is given over hours vs mine (5 min). Although I was there an hour & a half.
    Thank you, Donna

Your ferritin should actually be much higher than 18- it should be at least 70 to prevent fatigue, hair loss, brittle nails, etc. Most doctors don't know this because the lab range is so broad.
