    That thing is a monster having three sets of eight driving wheels. Despite not being successful and compared to giants of steam like Challengers, Big Boys and Yellowstones, it is an ultimate locomotive.

    • @PowerTrain611
      @PowerTrain611 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatredfokker I'm a big fan of cab views. They're one thing of many that sets a lot of locomotive classes apart in many cases. For example, a standard USRA mikado for the Central Railroad of New Jersey may be almost exactly the same visually on the outside as one from the Erie, for example, but the cab layouts may be set up totally different.
      Plus it's what you're looking at constantly when you're actually operating the thing!
      Also as far as the sounds, I love 611 and know her well. As I said, I also ported the sound to Gmod for use in an unstreamlined J I built.

    how hard is it to actually do these models? I'm wanting to learn, as I'm beyond tired of waiting for Texas & Pacific content for any sim. Trainz looks to be easiest to make models for.

    • @thatredfokker
      @thatredfokker  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a hell of a learning curve, but there's many paths to make it easier. Trainz is a great option for beginners because assets are relatively easy to import, depending on what it is. I've gotten used to it for a long while, and in the background I've been occasionally looking for a new game to port my models to. So, yes, it's easiest with Trainz, but you gotta know that the second you start making models, people will want them, and if you choose not to release them, you'll be viewed as Hitler, lol
      Best of luck, bro. Community's a minefield so I recommend learning by kitbashing first to get used to Blender's interface.

      @StampedTomcat50 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatredfokker sweet thanks for the heads up! Being a Texas & Pacific guy, I feel Texas largely has been overlooked in the simulation world and desperately want some quality models for at least one of them. Railworks is a downright headache now, I used to be a route builder for that one. Can't get the damn thing to load without a crash now. Kinda left me with Trainz at that point. I don't intend to do any releases, I doubt there's much if any interest in Texas-specific items. We'll see. I figured out repainting and reskinning a little bit, enough to make passable Eagle River content lol. But the actual modeling I've never done, so I take any info I can get to make it decent enough to want to play afterwards!

      The main issue there was boiler drafting.
      Steam Locomotives get a lot of their power output by the exhaust inducing a forced draft through the firebox, feeding oxygen to the fire and causing it to burn hotter.
      The Erie and Virginian triplex's were compound locomotives, with only the two center cylinders being directly fed by the boiler (this is why despite being a compound, all cylinders are the same size). However, they vented the rear set of cylinders out the pipe on the tender, which reduced the drafting capacity of the boiler dramatically.
      It's an issue that likely could have been solved by getting the rear cylinders to vent out the front smokestack, or failing that (probably because of cramped pipework) using a powered drafting fan like condensing locomotives used to generate their drafting force.

      The East Tennessee & Western North Carolina, affectionately known as "The Tweetsie", was a most unusual line having both standard and narrow gauge lines on its system, which ran from Johnson City, Tennessee to Boone, North Carolina, a total of 65.3 miles, not including a 2.6 mile branch from Montezuma to Pineola. Although the standard gauge portion of the line survives to this day, the 3-foot gauge trackage was abandoned in 1950. As the train winds its way along 3-foot gauge line, we are guests in the caboose, and later on, in the cab of the little Baldwin engine. Winding through the Doe River Gorge, we're reminded of other narrow gauge lines much farther West - how lucky we are to have this record of this wonderful line. Although the narrow gauge portion of Tweetsie closed down in 1950, Engine number 12, Combine/Chair 15, and Excursion Car 11 are still in service as tourist hauler at Blowing Rock, North Carolina, also known as "The Tweetsie". As the Crew goes about their daily business, of setting out, picking up freight cars, and caring for the little Baldwin, we are treated to sights long forgotten in modern railroading. It is interesting to note from the company time table, dated October 15th 1883, that, quoting; "Through the gorge, and at all points where the rock or land slides are possible and in descending heavy grades trains must be kept under perfect control, and speeds must not exceed 6 miles per hour" end quote. And also the time table cautioned, "Trains must not under any circumstances run at a higher rate of speed than 15 miles per hour.". Have you ever seen a brakeman working his way over the tops of the cars with a brake club?
