    Fact: Did you know some people consider the triplex to be the world's largest tank engine. I mean on a tank engine, the engine and tender(or bunker) are one in the same.

      They are technically permanently joined by an articulated frame and steam pipes, so its an articulated tank engine

      @Black 5 Club normal tender engines don't have drive wheels under the tender, tenders are normally a separate car that contains the fuel (wood/coal/oil and water) to the engine, therefore if the tender is part of the drive wheels, it makes it a part of the locomotive itself, so it is a tank engine

    Gotta love how this thing was LITERALLY SO POWERFUL THAT IT SNAPPED COUPLINGS on heavier trains. Never heard of a locomotive getting put out of service because it was too powerful before.

    The VGN Triplex needed the four-wheel trailing truck because it was used in pusher service on Clark's Hill and had to be able to operate in reverse to return to the helper station. The four-wheel truck made it better at handling curves in reverse.

    The stack on the tender is for exhaust steam from the rear set of drivers. Actual smoke does not come out of that stack. FYI, the Erie Triplex used compound drive. High pressure steam from the boiler went to the middle set of drivers. Exhaust steam from the middle drivers then went to the front and rear cylinders.

    Apparently Baldwin planned to make even bigger steam engines if the triplexes proved successful. There are some early blueprints for a 4-8-8-8-8-4 quadruplex and a 4-8-8-8-8-8-4 quintuplex locomotive. Yes, the engineers at Baldwin must have been on some serious drugs.

    Thank you for your well done videos. I would like to mention another problem with the 1 to 1 scale triplex. The 3rd engine primarily under the tender did not exhaust through the smokebox and did not help to force a draft through the firebox and we know that the fire needed all the help it could get to make steam. Thanks again for your videos. Keep them coming !

    Great Engine, one of the great things I like that I don't see alot in engines is the star up, it has a smooth transition for a stand still to movement that I don't see in most engines. Nice review

    The "here" equipment are the *air pumps* (as they _were_ called; nowadays they'd be called compressors.) These provided the motive agent for the brakes.
    The "there" equipment: hard to tell with the quick view, but likely include the main reservoirs (for the air) and perhaps an air cooler further aft.
    I suspect that pipe on the tender rear was rather called a *_steam vent_* than a smoke stack, given that no smoke passed anywhere near this thing.
    Amazing piece of work. No surprise at the 6' radius requirement!

    The only 2-8-8-8-4 ever built was a Mallet-type for the Virginian Railway in 1916, it was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. The 2-8-8-8-4 became the only example of their class XA, named for its experimental nature. The XA consumed more steam than the boiler could produce and was unable to achieve speeds greater than five miles per hour. The XA was sent back to Baldwin in 1920 and rebuilt as two locomotives, a 2-8-8-0 and a 2-8-2, these two engines were in service until 1953.

    My rail road vocation starts in 1973 when i grow up with MÄRKLIN and when i got my first model train. But since a few years i buy more and more models from M.T.H., Bachmann SPECTRUM and others because their models are excessively detailed with a lot of functions. I am deeply impressed from 2-8-8-8-2.......

    Great review, love the Russia iron boiler. I'm thinking if you have to take the loco and tender apart it might help to mark the drive rod/receiver assembly with a line of nail polish (your choice of color, clear not the best) to help align them for putting them back together.

      In real life, for each engine , when the right side driving rods are bottom dead center, the left side driving rods are back dead center. Articulated engines have two separate driving assemblies including cylinders, using a common boiler.

    I was at a train show recently and saw a solid brass model from Key imports for $1800, and later looking in my old model railroader magazines from 1961 saw the original price of the model was $200 and used and inflation calculator and saw they were roughly the same price

    Fun fact: there was also plans to make a Quadruplex and Quintuplex but there were never built, a Quadruplex was built in Belgium, however, it was built in a different design.

      I, too, live in NC. And, yes, the Erie ran through New Castle. Along the right bank of the Shenango River north to Erie. It interchanged with the P&LE/NYC, which had trackage rights on this to Westinghouse in Sharon, PA.

    Eric, this is another fine video on a very interesting locomotive. One thing I wish you had covered was how to access the battery. I bought my Triplex from an online table show sponsored by a reputable nonprofit train foundation. The engine's lights illuminate when power is applied, but the locomotive won't run electronically (sounds or smoke) or mechanically whether attempted conventionally or via DCS. A knowledgeable train pal suspects the problem is the battery. I of course tried to charge the battery with 18 volts on the track for about twelve hours, but that didn't work. The engine didnt come to me with it's factory paperwork unfortunately. So I need to access the battery compartment and either replace the battery with a new one, or preferably with a BCR. The train foundation has offered to refund the purchase price, but I love the engine and just want to get it running and not have it as a shelf queen! Thanks in advance

    Eric, I like the video. Just one correction, the stack on the tender is not realy a smoke stack, it is the exhaust fron the rear set of drivers. It was apparently two costly to send the exhaust to the smoke stack for added draft on the firebox.

    Hi Eric: A fantastic review of a very unique locomotive. When you showed us the cab interior I believe those two pipes on the backhead terminating above each firebox door were part of an early mechanical stoker. MTH seems to have improved on the tender exhaust from previous issues and the whistle sounds great. In my opinion, MTH releasing that engine as a Virginian even though it is not prototypically correct, is their way of getting more use out of their tooling and maximizing profits. I also like how MTH has blackened the wheels on a lot of their Premier steam engines. Much more realistic.

    The triplexes almost made it. Just Like PRR T1s if there flaws were ironed out like the triplexes could use large wheels and bigger boiler like big boy size then it could be a commercially viable loco taking some torc out plus with a auxiliary then no need to worry much on weight.

      Here's another idea. Why not put all three sets of drivers under a longer boiler. The front & back drivers would have to be articulated in order for the locomotive to get through curves & corners but the middle drivers would be solid with the boiler frame. All three pairs of cylinders would exhaust through the smoke box as well instead of having the back set exhaust through the tender.

      Well like the Wise tyro said if they ironed out the flaws then they could have been more usable I would take away the rear stack and fed the exhaust back through the front as for the rear loosing traction just add weights to it and not rely on the coal and water as much

    I think that technically the rear smokestack is only a steam-stack as the smoke from the fire goes out of the from end. I think the biggest advantage of this design is that it did not require large low pressure cylinders since there were 4 of them. This might have worked better as an engine meant to run fast but it really failed in pusher service as they usually ran it in 'simple' mode and fed high pressure steam to all six cylinders. Even a later super power boiler would not make enough steam to keep this up for long. The Nineteen Teens boiler was completely unable to evaporate the required water. I expect Baldwin new this but they would build something as long as you were paying.

    Makes me wonder what it would have sounded like. A typical Mallet of compound expansion steam had a single chuff sound. But since the Triplex had 4 low-pressure cylinders and 2 high-pressure, I wonder if it would be the double-chuff sound or single? Unfortunately, I don't think there are any records of people mentioning this in books.

    I knew the long long short long crossing whistle but the backwards and forwards whistles are new to me

    I have a premier Triplex in O Scale and I've had so many problems with that thing they are very fragile locomotives I've at lest had it to the shops twice. I hardly run it anymore. Its had electrical problems, the cord from the tender to the locomotive that plugs in I've had issues with, and I'm now having smoke issues with it. It is a old PS2.0 one tho so I am not sure how well the 3.0 one is or if they ever fixed a lot of the issues with it.

    14:43 I once thought of a device that lets you drive the engine on to a piece of track into a box with handles, so you can lift the engine without touching the engine itself.
    18:53 it's pretty unusual to have two firebox doors!
    21:47 is that a dog or a locomotive sound?
    I like this model! good job presenting this!

      oh ok thanks for adding that extra bit of info. Also yea the N&W Y3's also ended up as hump engines until they were scrapped as well but did move cars around the yards.

    Beautiful engine. I'm curious to know, when you take this model out of the box, will the Engine and Tender already be connected to one another, or do you have to put them together yourself? Can you put the model back in the box with everything still connected? Judging by what you were saying in the video, it seems like putting them together is a massive pain in the rear. Thank you.

    The Virginian 700 was split into two locos, one being the Virginian No. 614, a 2-8-0 from the front section, TALK ABOUT A BOILER! And you could probably take that engine to trainmaster and get two more motors put in so you could pull a train soo long you could couple it up to the front!

    I take it that these were NOT compound engines (i.e. Mallets) but just straight locos that exhausted their steam after one go around that would explain their problem. It would seem that they could be rebuilt as a 2-8-8-0 perhaps with a booster under the reconfigured tender.

    One feature i did notice. They could have used a warm white LED as the headlight rather than a stark white. Or is this just the camera prospective?

    I've had S American Flyers since 1952 and in the 60's became a HO fan. I have over 340 HO Locomotives, several DCC/Sound and even in HO steam I have placed a speaker in the locomotive where the sound belongs. So why especially with an O gage and the motor in the extreme rear would anyone not take advantage of the room in the boiler for the sound?

      That's where the motor and what not are, there simply isn't enough room to put a FatBoy speaker or two and a motherboard in.

    I have the proto 3 and the tender doesnt smoke what version is this it doesnt have metal lanyards or the drawbar to unscrew it has no switch for dcs or dcc..? im unfamiiar with the model you are showing or the model I just bought..thanks
