    So glad you kept the natural tones in the stone and didn't go with a bright white! It looks so beautiful and natural I love it and I am definitely inspired.

    Thanks for sharing. You mentioned that if we have been wanting to change the look for about 3 years, well it's going on 18 years for me. Unfortunately, our wall is 3x's the size of the one you just completed. It feels daunting. After watching your video, I've decided to dive in! That gray grout has got to go! Love the alabaster! You have inspired me.😊

    The entire front of my house is this stone. I grew up in this house and bought it from my mom last year. I don’t want to take down the natural stone but it’s so dated. For the last year I’ve been looking up German smear ideas and also pinned the same inspired idea as you. My stone is much more orange/rust colored and “rockier”. I’ve read that the exterior grout won’t last very long. I’m going to try a patch and see how it goes. Thank you for that extra push. Your fireplace is beautiful, I hope you enjoy it for years to come. ☺️

    • @jenilee.thepioneerhome
      @jenilee.thepioneerhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Karen! I hope it goes amazing for you! Let me know how that goes for you. I'm curious to see how it works outside. The only thing I would think about is how large the area is, the cost of material, and how porous the rock is. Trying it put first is a great idea! Good luck!

    Our stone fireplace (much like yours) has been our quandary for several years. Do we replace it with stone? Do we just add a mantle? It has driven me kinda crazy. And then I watched your video - and my husband and I knew immediately that this was what we should do! We are so excited! It will give our living room such an updated look - especially with the antique beam we will cut to make a mantle for it. Thank you, thank you for this very inspirational and thorough tutorial! BTW, for our sake, I'm glad you started with the wrong color - because I know I would have tried a darker tone like that too. We liked your Alabaster color so much we ordered it from Canada because it is no longer available in the U.S.

    Hi there! Thank you so much for this beautiful tutorial! I have a couple of questions 1. Did you wash/scrub the stones and existing grout with anything before you started and 2. I have seen other videos of whitewashing with paint. If you have seen this idea also can you share what led you to go with this technique over that one? I HAVE wanted to do this for almost exactly 3 years but have been so terrified of making a mistake that I haven't. But I just think it would brighten up our living room SOOOO much!

    • @jenilee.thepioneerhome
      @jenilee.thepioneerhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. I brushed off any dust off the stones. 2. I chose the grout method because i wanted something that would last! not peel off, and would act as a glue. The existing plaster was crumbly in some areas. This project was surprisingly simple and I wished I had done it sooner. It elevated the whole room! You will love it!

    • @jenilee.thepioneerhome
      @jenilee.thepioneerhome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try looking up over grouted rock; it's totally covered. Gives it a plastered look. Or you could completely paint the rock. I was surprised how going over my red rock with grout, changed the tone and color of the rock. As far as the mantle goes, could you cover it with a foe box beam? Just some ideas...

    This color is discontinued and I’m so sad!! I bought what I thought was the replacement (bright white) and it’s too white! Wondering if I can find a similar one from a different brand and redo it!

      Actually now that it’s dry, we love it! It’s not too bright! And looks so beautiful!! Thanks for your tutorial!

    I just bought a house that has entire stone wall that is beyond ugly. This might work for my ugly wall nightmare.

      I'm curious to know how it works on exterior. Definitely research a good product for the outdoors. I think it will be beautiful!

      It’s an interior wall that goes to the ceiling on a 12 foot wall, and then joins a fireplace on the next turn. The went way overboard on rock walls in this room, but I’m determined to make it look great. I’m so glad I found your video.

      I’ve seen videos on TH-cam that show this technique on exteriors. It looks just as nice.

    What did you use to remove the grout in the color you disliked? I accidentally put too much grout on my stone and need to remove some

      At first i tried scrubbing it off, but that really wasn't working well. And it was a pain. I pretty much went over it with the new color. It turned out fine!! Good luckl!

    This th-cam.com/users/postUgkxATHBlMJwipGgVWseuAFKvDQ_5R4_lywo unit was an easy install and turned out amazing. The dimensions were exact! I took a chance and built the wall prior to receiving the unit which arrived sooner than expected and it fit right in the space I constructed. The heat output is perfect for the space we needed and made the room exactly how we envisioned it to turn out. I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Thank you for the awesome product just in time for the holidays.

      @@jenilee.thepioneerhome I am planning to cover a whole stone fireplace wall and am considering buying the un-mixed type of grout. How many of these containers of grout did you use? They look like tiny containers!

    The video is about fireplace….but you zoom in a lottttt on other objects or pictures rather than after finishing showing the whole picture of remodeled fireplace in the room….n shooting is over slow!

    Lol! “Old world technique?!?” The term “German Schmear Technique” did not exist before the year 2000. The term is a 21st century invention of HGTV. If you went to Germany today and asked any mason about the old “German Schmear Technique,” he’d have no choice idea what you were talking about (unless he was a fan of HGTV). In fact, “Schmear” isn’t even a word that from anyone exists in the German language

    Using grout instead of mortar, could you tell me how it has held up? Worried about the heat and if the grout has cracked. Nervous but getting ready to tackle this project.

      That is a valid concern. I don't love that house anymore, so I can't say how it is doing now. I don't think the outside of our fireplace got very hot.
