  • Every now and then, when late night browsing Ebay and classifieds pages, I come across a machine that I’ve never heard of before. So, one day, I found this otherwise unassuming BOSS drum machine. The branding, ‘Dr Groove’ rang a bell because it probably is a reference to BOSS’ classic ‘poor man’s 808’, the BOSS Dr-55 Dr Rhythm and while I later found out that it essentially is a budged take on Roland’s then winning Groovebox formula, I was surprised to see it regularly go for around 200 bucks, actually a bit pricier than what Roland MC303s go for these days. So without wanting to spend this amount of money on a cut down MC303 I kept wondering why anyone would.
    I put it on my bucket list anyway and was happy to find a pretty beat up and broken down machine for just 80€. The jog wheel didn’t work and neither did most of the buttons, but after a few failed attempts and some online research on how rotary switches work, I was able to bring it back to life and was surprised that it had some really decent drum sounds, sound editing features, real-time controls and a pretty funky swing. It’s portable, as it also runs on batteries and is sturdy enough to be carried around, the black and orange color scheme looks pretty dope and so, in the end, I soon found out why people still seem to like it enough to shell out close to 200 bucks.
    But don’t take my word for it, go check out the video because the doctor is in!
    The Drumkit Editor mentioned in the video, can be found here:

    Brilliant drum/bass sounds. You can change the inbuilt sounds individually for snare, kick etc... using the effects/dely, resonance etc... and save them to the custom kits so it keeps your changed sounds. The bass sounds on this are awesome. Also portable battery powered but recomend just using an external rechargable power pack. Pair this with a good sampler and you'll have a ball... it's(looks nice with the Zoom ST224..same colour scheme)

      The dr202 sequencer has three tracks. The third is for sequencing external gear. It was pretty clearly intended for the sp202. Together, you can produce proper tracks!

    Nice video, and good work on the restoration. Now I'm off to be a Planeteer and recycle those synths...

      Using that bit actually ended me up with a Copyright complaint by Nikelodeon 😱

    Nice video. I had a mate in the early 2000s with one of these which I lusted after. Thought the sounds were fantastic at the time and loved the tweakability of them. Nice to see it again.
    Also curios, whats the little white box synth next to it?

    For me, the best solution to recycle the musical intrument are make music with. And anover solution are update it... exemple, change the wavetable on a numerique synthesizer with best samples.

    Cool video, I watched it a few times. I just can't figure out how to save a patch change. I can change the bass sound but every time I return to a pattern it plays with the previous patch. Help!!!

      Hmm, I'm afraid I can't remember this one so I guess it's about time to remind you guys of ...du du duh...the manual. It can be found by googling in a few seconds.

    How do you delete a part of the beat? I can’t figure out how to go back and undo a bass line that’s been recorded? I always just have to start from scratch

    • @rejectedsynths
      @rejectedsynths  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While recording in realtime hold down del and press the pad for the note/drum part you want to delete

    • @fernandorosa7144
      @fernandorosa7144 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish you could just hold down the BASS pad and delete the whole bass part, not doing it note by note.
