rejected synths
Germany
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ม.ค. 2020
Sometimes it takes some time for Synths to become legends, sometimes they stay ignored, frowned upon or even laughed at for ever.
Sure you can pay silly money for cult gear, but you really don't have to!
Digital marketplaces everywhere are full of unloved synths that can be had for next to no money. This channel is dedicated to all the rejected synths, I've managed to pile up in the last few years. Some of them bombed right after release and soon filled bargain bins, some were popular and widely sold, but went out of fashion quickly, some are so odd, potential buyers never managed to care.
Hunting down rejected gear has become a passion, playing around with it, a source of joy. So why not share my discoveries with everyone?

RS065.2 XG from Hell
Maybe the best part about doing a youtube channel just for fun is that you can do weird videos like this one:
In my last video about the Yamaha CS1x, I had a short segment where I played the doom theme through the CS1x. Later I found that there actually exists a Doom mod that replaces the plain old midi soundtrack with improved Midi XG playback, so what I knew I had to do next was to play these files through the CS1x to hear how they differed from the original. While I was at it, I thought, let’s turn it into a bonus video because, you know, why not ;)
Sharing is caring, you can download animations I create for my channel on my new sub channel Rejected Synths Recycling Center:

Here’s a link to the wonderful fire animation I used for this video:

And finally, this is the doom XG mod:

You did great matching each tone to a playing style...
Been thinking about getting one of these
I had 2 of these back in 93, I went to Music Control in Alsager in th UK to demo one, and noticed that one sounded amazing. fat, chunky and weighty (not like a 303, but great in its own right when you hit the sweet spot. but the other just didn't have the mojo at all. Anyway, I gradually sold one of them and I still can't remember If it was the good sounding one, or not, as it had been a while since I had used them. Anyway, a few years had passed (2003 - approximately) and I sold the last one to one of the guys from music control (Control synthesis) and he told me that he'd found the same thing as me. some sounded great and some....well, no so much. I really hope I sold the Good one to him. Sorry If I didn't. 😬
Still here thank you much. #stillearning 🎉
It's rather funny to see the FZ-1 sounding like the CZ-1. Such an underestimated instrument. Thank you for this.
8:18 Dude, you are very good at producing documentaries and you are also DAMN FUNNY! Great Work!
Please explain to me how the slide function works. I hear no difference on mine. There must be some trick.
I can buy one right now for 45$ should I get it?
I'd say best 45$ you can spent and stay sober at the same time
@ ok I'm gonna get it. Thanks bro
I have the 5 octave KS5 with aftertouch. Paid £200 for it 10 years ago. Great user interface. Terrible synth. Do not buy. Awful purchase. Don’t even think about it. My ones serial number 909. Made in England. ✅🇬🇧
Thanks so much for making this very useful comparison
Beautiful strings
The Aphex Twin has one as do Autechre so there must be something special about them.

How did you do the animation with the unit! looks great, did you render it?
I created a 3D model and some animations in blender
I got the 19 inch rack module version of this, the HS-2/E. The screen backlight should be fixed, I even have a replacement, but the chance to permanently damage the screen is too great for my liking. With its brushed metal front, it looks quite different from any other rack module that I have. The keyboard is gorgeous, though, with the white and metal bits.
I actually prefer this version
I see Behringer as a synth demo company. You buy a synth you want but is too expensive and just see whether it fits your needs or not. Then you can decide whether you want the original for a lot more or are content with using the imitation from time to time. I doubt that Behringer would exist if it weren't for other companies, so they have to be careful putting their competitors out of business.
I just unloaded one of these. It has good aggressive and often fat analog-like sounds, but the filters are limited so you don’t have lots of flexibility. And the user interface is terrible. So for someone who just wants to hook up a keyboard and play it, the Darkstar is not the optimal choice. But if I were into sequencing/recording I would have kept it. 8 voices that you can distribute among five Parts, and it’s particular sound set and filters? I can definitely see the value there. In any event, mine has moved on to someone who can really use it to its best.
Sounds awesome
i have thew cs2x though all this in the video will still apply
Preset and 2-operator FM-waveforms, weak samples and Vectory-synthesis. I never felt use for in my music. Yamaha could have made a better effort to never invented the SY-22 and came up with a better followup than the SY-35
cool
It is pretty amazing that Akai could make and release a product as insanely flawed as this on obviously is. That said with some creativity it can be useful.
🤙
It might be a dumb question but can awave write the disc image onto an actual floppy if I have an external floppy drive?
The Disc format the fz1 uses is a bit special. I guess, it's not impossible but would be very tricky to do.
Thank you for reply, I appreciate it.
No problemo 😁 If you happen to get anything working with your drive, list let us know how you did it - many others might be interested I guess
Tbh i might just spend the money on awave and emulator. Box up the floppy drive, I don't want to!!! But I might. I appreciate the info though!!!
Multimode Demo song is fiiiiiire
are you a tekno dj? your soundworld is really really similar to someone who i listen
Not really, no. Mind to tell me the artist's name? I'm kinda curious
Just got a K Station for 80GBP. Had to repair top C key. Some knobs missing so ordered similar from AliExpress. One broken fader shaft (Env Release) I've asked Novation UK for a schematic but not heard back yet. I'll end up removing it from circuit to properly measure the value. The Bournes range will likely source a replacement. Then I have to learn about the patch system! The Joy!
Novation have been super supportive when I asked them for support on a half dead bass station. Maybe try contacting them again.
PTA3043-2015CPB502 You're welcome.
Findet bei Dir Zuhause statt?
Wenn es so aussehen könnte also ob, hab ich editing mässig einen guten Job gemacht 🤩
@rejectedsynths ...& nächstes Mal Bilder von Deinem Schloss, bitte.
Are these your own demo songs? In any case, far more balanced than the pathologically overbassed ones from the otherwise nice AN1x: Some "songs" were so pseudo overbassed like no.real analogue ever sounds like. Like this: "Hey everyone, hear how incredibly warm I'm able to sound!" Anything else but warm but disgustingly artificial. 🤮 ...what of course was the programner's guilt not the instrument's decent basic sound.
Yes these are my own demo tracks, no external editing at all - just pure cs1x
All sounds from csx1??
Yes, I directly recorded every part individually without any further external editing
WOW the image quality is great for a video from 1995 👍
Bro I just found mine in the loft
Great video,subbed!
Great Video. There is some noise crunch, for example around 8:38. I have one of these little machines, and mine is similarly noisy, I thought it was just my unit, I’m reassured that it seems universal! Still love the little machine though.
Jonas Steur (Estuera) used the CS1X through most of his career, like in his hit Fall to Pieces
I despise this synth. Yamaha did a really poor job with this synth. To think, Roland brought out the JP8000 earlier the SAME year!
This really is comparing apples with pears as we say in Germany. The JP8000 was a 'high end' VA and the CS1x a beginners rompler. That's like complaining a Ford Fiesta can't outrun a Posche 😜
@rejectedsynths I agree. I was trying to make the point that it wasn't the era's underdeveloped technology that was the reason for the CS1X being such a poor synth, but a really badly designed product made by a prestigious company. I felt like they robbed me of my £600.
@EpicWinz yes, as I think I made clear in my video, they clearly tried to cash in into the then current techo craze
god damn fleshy shell.
Good one 😂👍
Nice Video! I love this Synth and it it is inspiring to program and modify patches on it. I even managet to get a Doom 2016 Saw Sound of it... Here i used only the CS1x with a little bit of post Modulaton Effects and a Playstation Reverb + Guitars to get that 90s Industrial thing if you are interested :) th-cam.com/video/kdSlnKVMQTs/w-d-xo.html
That intro is fire
This is a revelation to me. Its a long story but i knew a guy who decided to borrow a shit ton of money to buy a bunch of gear for a dream that didnt work out. I remember he had a blue thing which i couldnt pin down. This is it. He even let me do a sample bank with my eps16+. Crazy. Mind blown. 🤣👍👍
The CS1x was my fitst synth and I found it only usable as a MIDI controller. It didn't sound good and the filters where very steppy. Later on I got an Electribe MX-1, which was the right starter synth for me. It's probably still the best groovebox when it comes to the cobination of being intuitive and having great sounds.
XG sounds very cheap and crumpled on HFs. I used it a lot and that sound character finally pissed me off so much so I even can't watch reviews. Zero nostalgy. Put mine to shelf on early VST era and finally donated it to children in need.
I really enjoyed the story you told in the video, but the extreme use of AI contnt is kinda desturbing to be honest. I really dont like it. Feels so alien
When you couple it with an AN1X it really shines. The perfect combo.
