      The first character in my entire life that i can relate to. Pure intelligence and loving life as is in all possible points of view. This is the most unique combination. Funny how he is Indian - their religion(s?) truly can be both intelligence centered and fill the natural need for faith. Two thousands years with soul harmony and no depression, with all answers needed for his friends. He is like Nozomi's light for me.

    Yes, but I think sonny boy is also an exploration of our powerlessness to the world and a teenager's journey into the world of adults. How cruel, unknown and frightening the world could be when you don't know the rules anymore. One constantly questions and finds how the world works and who controls them.
    But still, we fall constantly. The decision we make often bad ones we don't know why we made them but we still have to live with them.

      Well I think that it is good and I respect your opinion, but it felt to me like it wanted to tell so many things and perhaps was too much only in 12 episodes. Also the majority of those ideas are from existencialist philosophers like Camus, Sartre and Kierkegaard. If we compare it to Monster, another philosophical anime. You will see that Monster kept one idea the entirety of the series and at the end leaved us with a profound analysis about evil.

    @esraayousef5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I just finished it and I am sure watching it again will allow me to understand it and appreciate it even more. I am not into philosophy or psychology but the show represents people's response to a crisis that lasts too long, how they're focused on surviving then they start adjusting and thinking about other things (love for example). The best parts of it are the stories told by Rajdhani and the dog, so insightful and thought-provoking, Rajdhani is my favourite character by far and I loved how Nozumi is just a straight forward good pure girl.
    Some episodes didn't make sense to me but thanks to your explanation it does now - The monkey baseball league episode-, in addition to the one where they're building a babel tower to reach heaven, I have no clue still as to people's need to believe in something (the story of the falling star) when life is dire and all meaning & hope is lost.
    Thank you for the video.

    I think your interpretation is right on the money for roughly the first half of the anime. However, in the second part, I think things start getting more psychological and existential than ethical and political, and probably the second half delves into the deeper ground of the individual s human condition... all I know for sure is that it is an incredibly sad anime about teenagers coming out of the realm of infinite possibilities childhood gives them, and undergoing those random events called destiny, unconsciously making those choices, along the way, that will trap them into the man/women they will become, till it will be too late to change anything. It s sad but that s life as it is, with a hint of hope, at least for the shit teenage life Nagata got for himself: as he says at the end, ‘it s just the beginning’ of his adulthood, he can still turn some things around, even though the best of all the possibilities did not come to fruition in this worldline ( his girlfriend, for example ). I do believe there is some underlying multiverse interpretation in fact, often accessible through the indian student s investigations.

    • @solitaire836
      @solitaire836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i agree that the second half reads more as an exploration into what the permanence of 'self' means-the process of each group of students growing apart from each other feels like a rejection of the political systems that developed during the show & marks a turning point towards more personal themes

    First time watching the anime, I gave up after episode 2, when I had no idea about what was going on, or what was I even watching. I then pushed myself to another episode, this time trying to understand what was happening, but instead of that, I have discovered a lot of comparisons and different (often satirical) takes on modern society. At that point I understood that this anime isn't primarily about the story, but it wants to tell you something in bigger picture through the character's development. Had to watch the anime twice to get many other references, takes, opinions and metaphores, and I can quite understand that this, alongside with absolutely brilliant art style (that looks like MS paint but I love it) is really something that deserves to be called an art piece, not only visually, but poetically too. Gotta give it another go, since after watching it 2 times myself, reading about other people's opinions and watching videos, I feel like there is still a lot more to understand and "get".
    I especially like how it kind of makes you think about stuff, especially when you are in your early 20s like I am, just "entering the adult world" of finding/having a job, routines, giving up your dreams and turning your life basically 180 to adapt to a predefined society.

    Huh. Your interpretation is completely different from mine. I came to the conclusion that the anime was about growing up. As one grows one faces myriad obstacles and situations that require nuanced problem solving skills. Whether it be how to survive in a world with self imposed rules, whether to help strangers when the cost is unknown, or even whether one should live in reality or not, the teenager goes through so many ideas and challenges that it’s a wonder how any of them turn out sane in the end. To me, sonny boy explores all of that and more. Seeing your political science take on the subject was enlightening and just goes to show that people can really see the same thing, but come away with different ideas.

    Yes! I love it so much. I was grasping this concept early on. What do you think would happen if the rising antagonist would’ve been killed off prior to them entering the peak of their story. Would the story then plateau? Or would another antagonist take shape and rise???

    In a mysterious dimension where you can do pretty much whatever you want, I find it interesting that most of the students decide to make societies that mimic the ones from their original world.
    And if anyone could explain to me the dog episode that would be great 😭

    • @shrek2770
      @shrek2770 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      From the characters standpoint, for all the shit people give our society, it works better than anything we have ever had in our entire history and on a much larger scale than anything else in history.
      From a writing standpoint, its easier to have the characters mimic our current or past societies than it is to have them come up with something new. Lol

      From me it seemed the dog took advantage of the girls kindness. And even rejected it at times. When the town feel under the plague he stuck to his selfish ways but still entertained the girl. He was ashamed tho because he could never look her in the eye again continuing the suffering. I think if he would've used her power and sought direction he might've returned to his world. But he fell into the conventional emotions of the real world staying trapped in the "empty space" at least a that's how I seen it

    • @fatoommirgani1015
      @fatoommirgani1015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The dog episode is talking about someone who is deeply troubled, avoidant, constantly running away from human connection and doesn't understand kindness and empathy. Who encountered a girl
      who is literally a ray of light, people gravitates toward her and seek her help and good opinion. And she brings life to everything she touches.
      But no matter how hard the kind girl tries to bring him out of his shell, he keeps avoiding change. Until he finally starts affecting her and all the people around in a bad way "the disease". It's the world that he created where her powers aren't working. it's him ignoring the fact that his refusal of change is affecting people around him. it's him depending solely on her powers to heal everything without him participating, even though deep down he knows he needs to fight his demons and misery. He meets 'War' who took more than 10000 lives, who tells him "you and I are the same" because what the dog brings on people is like the misery of war that drains you out and consumes you before it kills you.
      Everyone blames the for taking them both in, and while she kicks out War (who is blatantly a murderer), she holds on to the dog (whose damage is more hidden ). Eventually she asks him to promise her he'll "step out" and "leave to a better world", that he'll finally change his ways and find a light within him. She gets so invested that it literally takes her live, and the lives of whomever encountered him. It takes him 5000 years to finally step out and go to our protagonists. Initiating a friendship instead of running away. Our main op tells him he is also struggling to change, and the dog says: I did it after 5000 years, so can you.

    I understood most of the show, but could someone please tell me who Aki-sensei actually was. We know she couldn't be the real Aki-sensei because only the students could go drifting. Did the show ever explain who she actually was or what her true goals were?

    • @silasgystad8748
      @silasgystad8748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I don't think the show actually explained it, but my personal theory on the matter is that she is/was a fellow student, one with the power to change her looks into others. (Based entirely on what the friendly dog said, and the brief shot of Aki where you see beneath the white coat, a black skirt like most of the girls wear for their uniforms)

      Aki was a student who had the ability to look like an adult. In nagamis world adults/teachers are portrayed as Gods so in this instance aki was being what is in the bible as the false Shepard. A person who claims to be a god but is actually a devil or a djinn.

    Great interpretation but I think the last half of sonny boy really expands on what you talked about especailly when the topic of death is brought up, there is also a eery amount of solitude that is a running theme throughout the anime which I geuss is a form of wanting to reject society yet feeling lonely while being seperated from it creating a back and forth of the pain cuased by conflict within social groups and the pain of not being in any social group, I should really go back and rewatch the show to undersatnd it more

    I see it as people dealing with chaos and uncertainty that everyone experiences in life. Learning to accept the hand your dealt and that life is still worth living even if it didn't turn out how you expected. Also making small leaps towards full understanding and acceptance of your fate.

    Just rewatched the first episode (thanks Crunchyroll-Funimation merger!) and I noticed something. Not to spoil everything, but I love there there is quiet for the entire episode, except for the ambient sounds, and then at the climax of the episode, it explodes at the end with that Banger of a song in the trailer. It felt chatarirtic, liberating, refreshing even.
    If you plan to watch the series:
    1) Enjoy the ride, because it is wild.
    2) Watch each episode at least twice before moving to the next one, for the following reason:
    3) Treat Sonny Boy as a gnostic text in form of a seasonal anime, full of mystical and mysterious imagery. Try to decode it not with your mind, but with your soul. Then it will be your soul to understand what it means for your life.
    Sonny Boy is a Zen Koan: it f**ks your mind so hard, but only like this you can be enlightened. And try not to be adrift anymore, to save your life a little. In fact, you can’t change the world…
    …unless you change yourself.
