MORA Bushcraft Black: Best Budget Bushcraft Blade!

  • Preparedmind101 takes a look at the Mora Bushcraft Black and performs multiple simple bushcraft tasks to test it out. Admittedly, I am not a big Mora fan. BUT...I AM a fan of THIS Mora. This Mora is excellent, and if you plan on doing extended knife work, you'd be hard pressed to find something more effective and capable for the money.

I got my first Mora (the No.1) in 1962 and used it for almost 10 years before I bought another one. The only reason it was replaced was after ten years of normal sharpening it was getting a bit thin I am now on my 4th Mora and I cant say enough good things about them. I'm not worried about the partial tang....never had a prob with any of them.....and they all have gotten ALOT of heavy use. Best bang for the buck I have ever found.

Love the Mora Bushcraft Black! did some light batoning last year in a canoe trip in Canyonlands Utah (I know its not designed for that but wanted to test it) and it performed exceptionally well, and it was still razor sharp when I got home. Great video, big fan! keep'em coming.

I have the heavy duty, thick bladed with fire stick, survival version. Its the sharpest knife I have ever owned, right out of the box. Its an awesome knife even if it'd not technically a "Full tang" knife as Americans like it. I do have other knives, but this one is a good all around, INEXPENSIVE knife. A great buy for your first purchase of a knife.

Definitely on my amazon wish list. I'm just getting back into more rustic camping skills and putting together some different kits. I've already got a Mora Classic#2 and a light my fire, but I want a bigger high carbon blade too. The pathfinder looks cool on Dave's channel, but will be $100 more...more than I want to spend at this time. I'm about ready to post a video of my setup, and I owe a big part of my new knowledge to your channel! CHEERS!

My pleasure, Sweden make some quality products, especially in the area of Bushcraft.
All of which were exceptional value, I don't think you can't get a better knife than the Mora Clipper for the amount it cost and there is no better Bushcraft Axe than a Gransfors Bruks.
Same applies for the Laplander folding saw, it's the best I have ever used.
I have a few knives from my home country in England, like a Whitby and a Ray Mears bushcraft knife but we are talking double amount for the Whitby (Lesser quality) and about 200 times more the Ray Mears knife (£380, the best knife I have ever used, but the cost is extortionate). The Mora is still the knife I use while out in the field. It's not just a good knife, it's a fantastic knife..

I bought this knife for my 8 year old son to introduce him to bushcraft. I have never seen that knife fail at doing a task. My son has done light baton work with it to make kindling to start the fire, he has sharpened sticks for tent pegs, snare triggers, ect. and other light work around the camp. Best of all, I don't worry much about the knife breaking because it is cheap to replace. For now though, until my son learns how to properly maintain his tools and perform some more complex tasks, the Mora will be a good knife for him to learn with. I recomend the Mora for people who need a decent blade for bushcraft but are on a budget, as the knife only costs $35-$45. If you are looking for a hunting knife, then the Mora is going to be perfect for anything you would need to do. I personally carry an Ontario SK-5 Blackbird. It is also a good knife. It is simple and rugged, has a nice micarta grip, its full tang, its easy to sharpen, it keeps an edge quite well, it will baton through anything within reason, it is small enough to make good feather sticks, and it is priced in the $100-$135 area. I know I can trust the Ontario knife with my life. I recomend the Ontario knife to someone who has enough experience in bushcrafting to know what they are doing and is looking for an upgrade to their cheap knives. If you need something durable and reliable, then the Ontario is the way to go. :)

Knowing how you like you blades looking, I'd recommend you do te following: re grind the scandi, and remove the little micro bevel. This will make it crazy sharp and also bring out the steel through the DLC coating. You end up with a cool two tone effect. I have a long term use video on my channel with my Mora Black in that setup.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe I'll have Bryce do that. He's my blade technician when it comes to precise stuff like that. Right now it does have a secondary bevel because I ended up giving it a couple swipes through the work sharp.

Chris, you owe it to your viewers to compare Mora to Marttiini knives! It has a great feel, sharpest blade ever and made of superior materials than the Mora! Marttiini is made in Finland and the scandi-grind blade actually glistens near the cutting edge! I don't have to sharpen any of my Marttiini blades very often as they really do hold an edge for long periods of time! If you are not familiar with them, then I suggest that you get one! Marttiini knocks Mora right out of the park!

The price difference is caused by thicker blade stock that happens to be fully finished with a 90 degree spine, a MUCH larger tang than standard Moras, a blade that is further embedded in the knife for yet more strength, and the black coating. There are a few other differences that I haven't noticed yet but it won't be much longer before i do.
EDIT: I would love to see this blade in their laminated steel.

You seemed in the oddest mood the day you filmed this vid. By the end I just wanted to give you a big hug. You are definitely my go to guy when it comes to knives.

I noticed that the Heavy Duty Mora Knife is basically the same thing than this one. The only differences between them is the rounded off spine and the handle. This one just doubles the cost.

Chris I saw that they came out with a stainless steel version with a orange handle. I like the orange handle but want to know what you think about the stainless steel blade?

I like the bushcraft black, BUT i would really like to see SOMEBODY like you maybe do a side by side comparison of the black and the robust and justify the pice jump. Maybe you could add that to your to do list. Did like the video thou.
