    One of the main things I find to be useful turning " location" on if your unfamiliar with the city your in and even if you aren't sure where you have to walk to catch the transit it will show you where you in real time on the map. It also orientate's your direction so to help you figure out what direction you want to walk down the street.

    Here in Bangladesh, Google maps is a great tool for finding the least traffic-jammed routes. Your videos are educational- thanks !

    Wow! I had been struggling the the public transportation stuff in Google Maps for what seems like forever. Watching your video made it so simple and straightforward. Thank you!

    Good explainer. And by the way, I am so happy for Canadian content. You pronounce route properly (rhyming with root), which is reflective of its French etymology. Well done!

    This is a great video. I learned things I didn't know and I've been using Google Transit for years.

    Saving the trip onto the home screen on your smart phone is also a handy feature.

    I've used Google Maps for Transit hundreds of times. Usually pretty successful, but I have been stranded. It's always an area I'm not familiar with especially the transit system. What can happen is a bus gets delayed and that makes you miss a connection. Then you have to figure out when the next bus arrives or if there is a different bus that will get you "home". If your internet connection is spotty or your battery dies, you probably should have a printed copy of the bus timetables with you. It can get sketchy fast if it's late, cold (or hot) or a bad area. Technology is great, but I get sloppy and don't have backup. I had to rely on borrowing someone else's phone and calling a cab once. Luckily I had cash.

      Google Maps for Transit also shows no of stops. Really handy in a strange city. And also alerts you when its time to transfer. Brilliant!

    I'm wondering, how does Google get information on public transport such as lines, schedule and such?? Do they have their own software for that? If so can that be for example bought/used by other travel companies?

    There is an iPhone app that I use in Tallahassee: Rider. Shows when bus is due at a selected bus stop.

    Great info!! I just bought a new smartphone and with the old phone, I was able to put individual transit info to work, to home, and to my mom's house on my home screen to use at anytime I needed. It was a great time saver. I can't remember how I came about the option to do this. I was hoping you could let me know. Please help!!! It's driving me crazy trying to find how to do it. Just subscribed too. Thanks!!

    Another good one, thanks. Hey, I'd like to see you do a how-to video on Google MY MAPS. (different from google maps) I used to use & love Microsoft Streets & Trips to plan a trip in advance with many stops & sights , campgrounds , museums etc. but it's no longer supported. Streets & Trips was software that you'd buy & it was used offline. I'm watching some how-to videos on MY MAPS now but no one teaches a good as you do so I'll put in my request for this one.

    Hi Steve I was wondering if we could have a video on the Parking element of Google Maps. Because today I noticed a Time Left feature which is handy if you park in a car park or at a parking meter. I've only noticed two or three features so it may not be economical enough to make a video. However have a look, it may tickle your fancy. 😊

    Steve, does the ‘Add to Calendar’ and ‘Add a Google Maps reminder’ function only work for public transport options and not driving? I’m trying to add events into Maps and have them come up in google Calendar as you show in the video but Inhave to enter the event in separately to both apps, which seems a bit pointless. Can you offer any words of wisdom?
    Keep up the good work. Really enjoy and benefit from your videos. Thanks.

      Hey Simon, I am not sure, it seems that the tools work differently in different areas and OS.
      But here is where I would ask

    The start button has disappeared from the Google Maps Public Transit Section. I have installed Google Maps and I have restarted my phone multiple times and the start button still has not come back to the Google Maps Public Transit section. This is first time the start button had dissappeared.

    I have figured out one click picking of my favorite destinations on my smartphone. Works GREAT if you have GPS built in.
    On Android...
    Hit GO. have "YOUR LOCATION" in the "From" box.
    Enter your favorite location in the "Choose Destination" box. DO NOT HIT Start
    Make sure everything is set up right.
    Near the upper right corner is 3 vertical dots. Touch it.
    Click "Add Route To Home Screen"
    On your home screen will be an icon with destination place on it.
    Now every time you want to go to that place click on that Icon....
    Make your home the first one. So wherever you are click that button to find your way home. I have many places set up.

    Does anyone know what it means on Google maps if you see two or more bus are merged together??....does that mean they're going the same route? Or that one bus changes to a different bus number??

    Thank Steve, How does Google get this transit information, how do they find out that a bus is running late?

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They tie into local GIS systems and whatever tracking systems the local transit authorities make available.

    You made it look easy, but it is not so easy for a senior. I was hoping your tutorial would show me how to use the Google transit function on my smart phone. But it didn't quite make it. Your delivery was rapid fire and did not show the buttons to push.

    • @sheppytim
      @sheppytim ปีที่แล้ว

      very true. you have to be quick on your phone if you are trying to make a connection /change buses. Plus if you have a Mobile bus pass, you have to switch between the apps quickly.

    I just found this video, and was hoping it would solve my problem with the Android app: It seems to be stuck in driving mode and doesn't let me select the another mode (transit or walking). If anyone sees this and has any ideas on turning the option on, I'd be pleased to know.

    • @WilliamHamilton29464
      @WilliamHamilton29464 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you have a route selected, use the icons for bus, bike and walking to switch to a different mode.

    Thanks, Steve. BUT does the reminder work on the Android? My android does not show the option to add to calendar.

    • @WoodyCollins
      @WoodyCollins 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      After wasting lots of time, the reminder feature only works on the iPhone/iPad. So I left my disgust with Google again. "I will NOT buy a Google Phone until the Google Developer Team start developing Google Apps for Android in a more timely manner. Here's another example, you can NOT set a reminder to leave for your trip on an Android Device."
