I love Google My Maps for trip planning! As far as I know, though, there is not a separate app available for iphone. I have to access it through Google Maps. I also think it's crazy that there is no navigation feature AND worst of all, it doesn't have full functionality unless you're on wi-fi!! That means it's great for planning, but awkward to actually use when traveling. WHY??
Great suggestions. We used this last week for our DC trip and it really saved time and made the trip more efficient. Couple more tips for "My Maps"... For the custom markers you can add text to the dialogs. I added the hours of when each location was open as well as their entrance fee. With My Maps you can export to a PDF and print that out which for some is more convenient. You can also share a link to your map with your friends by going to "Share", changing the permissions and then copying the specified url. These shared urls can be viewed in any browser...but I'm not sure if there is a way to show the "current location" using this method.
Nice for a vacation in Washington. But I want to plan a cross-country multi-day trip across the USA from Dallas to Redwoods in northern California. I can add places to eat, sleep, and enjoy later, right? So far, all tutorials are not basic trip planners. This one is not basic. He gets into colors, styles, etc. I want a tutorial for base cross country trip planning.
I have an iPhone & couldn't fone GOOGLE MY MAPS _ THEN I found this statement: "You can create and share your own maps online with My Maps. My Maps isn't available for iPhone or iPad, but you can view your My Maps using Google Maps." Wonder why not?

Hey there! I'm trying to plan a family trip to Yellowstone, is there any way to navigate with the preplanned route in My Maps, because the only way I can get the directions to work is by clicking on the landmark and then it just basically places that landmark in the destination field.
@@jonathan.varghese thats it. The best work around I've been able to find is to create a new layer with all of your key desired route stops or if you have a really large trip, do it by the day. From there tap on the destination and it should pull up an options for directions. Another tip is when you need to navigate along your predetermined route, turn off all of the other layers from your map so you only see these key destinations. I've been researching this for hours and I haven't found a better work around. Someone please enlighten me if there is, I would love to be wrong about this. Rant: why can you set it up to provide you with directions but when you load it on your phone there's no way to navigate to a location you have chosen that already needs directions. Honestly the biggest disappointment and just completely don't understand how this isn't implemented.

I cannot thank you enough for this! The only thing that is different now is that on iOS there is not an app called Google My Maps. You actually use Google Maps. By default, Google Maps opens on the Explore page, just click on the Saved button at the bottom of the page. On the Saved page, there is a horizontal row of icons under the word, Labeled - click on the one that reads, Maps. On the Maps screen, you will find all the Maps that have been created per your instructions in this video!
Well, I am watching this video because after spending a day on my maps and mapping the roadway of the old Lincoln Highway through the states of New York and New Jersey, I looks as though My Maps does not provide real time dynamic driving directions only 20 year old printed step 1, step 2, ect. technology. I hope I am wrong. PS, watched the video till the end and I looks like I was correct. Google My maps cannot give you driving directions. Everyone making these My Maps tutorials should explain that up front.

I don't understand why My Maps does not link your saved locations with the google page for that location (reviews, photos, etc.) when viewing in the app. Alternatively, "Lists" does this brilliantly, but you cannot change the icon picture/ color etc... between the two there is a perfect travel planning app
I want to use this for an upcoming trip in Japan but it doesn't allow you to plot a route with public transport? If anyone knows a solution it would be greatly appreciated.
Great work Rob! Google Maps made our trip travel perfect. So easy and clear and we used it everywhere for all modes of travel and it was next to faultless.
if you change each one from the default of individual styles to uniform style, then every time from then on it keeps the same color and design you choose, like restaurants being purple with a fork and knife. this will save you alot of time if you are choosing alot of places to see. wonderful video i learned a lot
Hi, I'm making a coverage area map for radio stations and I have imported several .klm files. I was able to fill the different layers with colors, but just one of my .klm files will not let me fill with color and the color option is grayed out. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Sorry folks but this function does not look ready for prime-time. How can you make changes to the map with your iPhone while traveling. You also can’t use it for navigation.
How to programming destinations on the map in navigation? For example, due to my profession, I will go to about twenty workplaces that day for check-ups. I want an application or program that shows these places on Google Map or another map at the same time and warns me with warning signs and voice commands to those closest to my location.
Does it work offline??? Cause if it doesn't.... it would be a waste of time to make those maps . An alternative that I use is "here we go maps" thanks for the useful information in your videos and keep up the good work

Rob, that is SUPER SLICK!!! Thanks! I'm heading up alone this weekend because my friend who was going had a death in the family, so I'm having to re-plan my itinerary. This is really helpful. We were just up 2 weekends ago and did a lot of walking, but both enjoy it because Richmond is such a car-centric town. We waited for a Circulator bus that never showed up near the Vietnam Memorial, so finally hoofed it from there to 6th & E streets for dinner. Most trips I manage between 7-8 miles on foot, which is fine by me. :)
Can someone please send me step by step directions to change the distance Google notification of an approaching turn. I cant find it guess my T.B.I. AFFECTS my mind more than thought I'm a 100% disabled veteran please help

@@TripHacksDC Also works from the My Maps app. When you click on one of your pins, there is a small icon in the top right that is the "directions" icon. Clicking it opens Google Maps with that address as the destination.

Google and Apple are direct competitors and their apps often do not play nicely on the other's operating system.

It's not very well advertised by Google but very useful!

Here We Go maps is handy
You can always export a "My Map" to a PDF and print that.

That´s all very nice, but how you do it to navigate the maps you do on My maps On Google maps on android smartphone?!?!
