    As a banshee owner myself, and owning many banshees in the past as well, I can say that most people don’t have any doubt about the banshee’s motor, it’s a great motor. It might be a little more complicated to work on than a normal 2-stroke, but when done right it is awesome. Most of the trails you were on are well traveled and groomed trails which works well for a banshee as well, but in tight and very technical trails the handling isn’t as good as many other sport quads. Yes, it will put handle ANY utility machine, but in comparison to a 250R, Tecate 250, LT250R, or any of the 400cc or 450cc pure sport machines the banshee doesn’t handle as good out of the box. That’s not yo say you can’t spend some money and make the suspension much better, but it seems to take a lot more money to build a banshee to compete in the handling department. That doesn’t mean it’s a terrible machine because it’s not at all, it’s just a machine for the “financially stable” if you are going to really build it to be a top competitor.

      Hi Chris and thank you for the comment. First I'd like to respond to the comparison portion of your comment. When was the last time any of us have even seen a 250R, Tecate 250, or LT250R in the woods? I myself can only recall seeing a single 250R and a single LT250R (that was falling apart) in the past 20 years. This only reinforces the fact that the Banshee has stood the test of time in build quality and smiles per mile. As for the 400cc machines notably Honda's there are still a ton of them out there and will continue to be because there Honda's. I can't remember seeing any Suzuki LTZ400's either in many years.I guess the 400's are fair handling machines but really lack any exciting power.
      At this point it would be extremely rare to even own an "out of the box" Banshee. Now I do have one friend that still has stock shocks, stock A-Arms and a stock axle and the ride quality is not terrible but it beats the living death out of you. I'm not sure I agree with the statement that the Banshee will cost more to improve the handling characteristics than any other machine. I say that because your technically still buying 3 shocks, a set of A-Arms and an axle like everyone else (450's the possible exception). Last but not least is the 450 class and I happen to own one and love it. The frame geometry on this generation I will admit is far superior. They are better balanced with a better steering radius not to mention the exceptional all day long fuel mileage on the EFI models. My 2020 YFZ450R is also a great woods quad but man does it run hot and angry. Notably I had to sink thousands of dollars into it "out of the box" just to unlock its potential. Vortex computer, Fuel Customs intake, exhaust system, steering stabilizer all really added up quick.
      As for the trails I recorded this video on I can honestly say its the nicest its ever been. In past years its always been a rutted out mess with fallen trees and swap pits everywhere. The Nation Forest got some big grant money from the Trump administration and I must say they put it to good use. I'm 50 years old now and can appreciate some smoother trails for a change LOL! Again thank you for the comment I really appreciate it. I wish we could chat more but around a campfire next time!

      @@350iroc9 I actually have a Honda ATC and a TRX 250R, an LT250R, a banshee, 3 blasters, and a Tri-Z250. I restore quads and trikes as a hobby. I’m part of a couple communities that ride these machines as well so I see them quite often. Hopefully soon my TH-cam channel will be up and you can check that out. I’m going to build a banshee for XC style racing, which is the style racing I do and I got my 2 daughters into it as well which is why I have 3 blasters. I do have a few 4-stroke machines as well, and you are right, they lack the excitement of a got old 2-stroke. My ‘99 400EX is much slower than my ‘97 Banshee, but it handles MUCH MUCH better. In the tight technical stuff the banshee can’t keep up, but as soon as the trail opens up into a straight away it’s game over. This is what prompted me to do an XC build on the banshee. Where I ride we spend majority of the time squeezing between trees, dropping into creek beds, crossing rivers, and climbing hills. I know the Banshee motor has the power, but the chassis is most definitely lacking. It will take more than a good set of shocks to make the difference, especially with the 400EX being far from stock with the motor and suspension. It is my old race quad from when I was a teen, and it has probably $15,000 worth of parts on it to make it as good as it is now, and still no match for the banshee power, or 250R power for that matter. I’m going to do the whole suspension on the Banshee to see if it can compare. Long travel arms, stage 5 shocks, -1 swing arm, lighter and stronger axle, and change the gearing. Right now the power is fine with just the Toomey pipes with the air box lid off and the carb jetted. The stock shocks are like pogo sticks though and they just don’t do what they need to do, plus the banshee is a little too long for super tight trails.
      Look, I’m not talking down on Banshees, they are just a machine for people with extra money to blow if you want it to handle on par with some of the more modern machines. With the proper suspension I feel like it could be formidable in the woods, but as they sit stock they are more of a desert/dune machine.

      @@christopheravery5808 Wow that's is a impressive collection you have then! I really respect people that keep legacy machines on the trails. Unfortunately here in Ohio I just don't see any of those models anymore including any Blasters and really its a shame. That's also great that you have the little ones enjoying the sport and must make you a very proud Dad!
      I'm actually packing up now to head back down to the trails but its the 450's turn this time. If you do get your channel up and running please stop back with a link as I would definitely like to check it out. Thank you again and can't wait to see your XC Build!!!

      @@350iroc9 that’s 20 years of buying basket cases and being a hoarder. I also had this bright idea to do a “vintage shootout” for a magazine back in the day which obviously never happened, so now I just collect. I wouldn’t have as many machines as I have but not a single machine cost more than $500 with the exception of the Tri-z and the Polaris Magnum I bought for an ex girlfriend to ride. I buy basket cases because they are fun to me. Between my mom and I we have 21 machines parked in 3 barn style sheds and my garage.

    I'm 54 years old. Only atv I've ever owned sense the mid 80's has been and still is to the day a Yamaha banshee. I'm widened and lowered and more geared for flat track racing. But on off days when my wife wants to ride we do a 30 mile loop of seasonal and back roads. My body just isn't trail worthy as my bike is.

    I've riden here several times. I have a 4mil banshee myself. Banshees (imo) love this shit. If you have it setup properly it's a blast in the woods. A lot of folks build engines, but never do the suspension. I've ran Elka Legacy on all my banshees. Personally! The fit me, and my riding style. You can make anything do anything. Just how far you want to take the build is the question.

    Nice Banshee! My banshee is setup for trail riding and I love it ( extended A arms and rear axle, elka long travel shocks, full skid plate, Dg bumper, grab bar, and nerf bars, and its geared down) The only thing I don't like is that its lower then stock so it doesn't take much to get stuck on a stump or in mud.

    • @350iroc9
      @350iroc9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First thank you for the comment! So your setup is exactly what I think makes the Banshee an excellent woods machine. If you widen it up and bolt on a good set of shocks your golden minus the all essential carburetor tuning! I definitely agree with the one limitation being the low ground clearance issue. I've rolled over some sections of trails that I was almost positive I was going to get stuck on with my YFZ450r but made it. As I looked back I said to myself the Banshee would of definitely of gotten hung up. Thanks again and thanks for watching!

I myself never managed to enter anything of the sort and suppose I would of been right there with you somewhere in the middle but certainly not in the back LOL! I'm just not aggressive enough and really try to ride my machines semi-conservatively to preserve them for the long haul. I guess my quad lasting 26 years puts the truth in that statement. I guess being fat and 50 will also help to propel its lifespan a few more miles down the old dusty trail. Thanks partner for watching. I hope it restored some of those 87 250R memories. Well thank you for the comment! That's great news your building a Banshee for trail use. Many people think they are just for the desert or wide open area riding. If you take the time to tune your machine it will run amazing with plenty of low and mid range power not to mention a ridiculous top end! I see you also posted a second question about the type of pipes I'm running and those would be the FMF Gold Series Fatty series. They are now 25 years old and have held up well.
      On a side note I'll record a video of what my quad is built with since the interest is there. Either check back or subscribe so you can get the finer details of my build. I really do think its become a great combination and a labor of love over the past 26 years. I have a pretty good grasp of what works and certainly what doesn't so don't hesitate to ask. Bought a new banshee in 01, rode the trails here in WV for 7+ years. Stock other than gncc holeshots on the rear with the rims flipped to make the rear a bit wider. You gotta keep air circulating thru the radiator and don't let the radiator get clogged with mud.

    • @350iroc9
      @350iroc9  ปีที่แล้ว

      So one issue with a stock banshee is the stock water pump impeller. Its made from some kind of plastic that eventually disintegrates in time. Your basically just left with a spinning shaft and no fins to push the coolant through. Once you replace the plastic impeller and gear with high flow billet ones your safe. As for the radiator "yes" it must be kept clean. I myself am quite OCD on that topic so I appreciate you mentioning it. Thanks for watching T and thank you for the comment!

      @@yakstreamtv495 Dirt bikes are definitely a handful because crashing just seams to be expected. Cracked levers, bent bars, bent forks, dented radiators, dinged up pipe and a front fender pointing North East! That is an accurate description from my dirt bike years but do miss it just a little. You have so many more options when picking lines and can certainly go where no ATV has ever been before. Dirt Bikes are a fraction the amount of money to maintain, super easy to work on and take up less space.
      To own a Banshee you have to enjoy working on it. You also need to enjoy adding two of everything to your shopping cart. When they run right they are an absolute joy and are like nothing else.
      On the flip side if your not interested in taking your carburetors apart 10 million times only to find out you have an air leak or a out of spec stator, coil or CDI box then a new 450 class machine would be a better option. I have to admit that rolling up to a gas station pump without mixing oil is kind off nice. These EFI motors go twice the distance now on a tank of gas. The down side to either of them is the cost right now. A new 450 is 10K and then you have to find one. Before the 450 even touched the dirt I had to add a $700 vortex ECU, $250 intake and a $600 exhaust system so it didn't sound like a sowing machine. From what I see Banshee's cost more today then when they were new! I lost count years ago in money invested but honestly I don't care because I love it!

      @350iroc9  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delayed response as I just got back from Glamis CA on a 10 day dune bender with the 450 this trip. The most important thing a Banshee needs is to insure there are no air leaks, good compression, good electrical and that it is jetted and synced correctly. First invest in a leak down tester from South Texas Banshee. You can find him on youtube easily and recommend watching all his videos. Test your stator and ensure its in specification. You will need a compression tester and a good multi-meter. From there you can start tuning your Banshee. Its imperative to check for air leaks and a good electrical system first before anything else or you will chase your tail in an endless circle of money and frustration. Only consider a clean machine from an owner who actually cared and with as many good aftermarket parts or close to bone stock. My quad has lasted this long because I take it completely apart every winter and clean every nut and bolt to perfection. If something is suspect, loose or worn out I replace it immediately. My quad has taken care of me so I in return take care of it. I'm here if you need me and welcome and questions. Best wishes....

Secondly I will take a manual clutch over a CVT belt system any day. I for sure about this as I have both types. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

      @@Bee-fr7zk Bee I currently don't know of any that are for sale. My group has about 10 of them but even if one did go up for sale someone from the group would swoop it up. The prices on them seam to of really gone up these past few years. They are definitely a good investment at around $4G's well equipt seeing that a YFZ450R is 10G's and then you have to put 2+ more into it right off the showroom floor.

    Just killed my suzook LT230s, lost my oil fill cap, there was a mistvon my goggles, then I see my leg covered in oil! Arrggh . I thought, oh well, cooked a top end. But I'm sure the crank & rod took a lot of heat, so doing a piston & rebore would be wasted money on top of a bad lower end.safety wire those caps people !
    Dont do the Iggy like I did. 16km walk back to truck. In MX boots. 5 hrs. Ugh. Starting at 7:30 pm . A can of pineapple juice & a pepperoni stick waiting in the truck gave me the will to live. I was armed with a stick & 2 flashlights . Good times , eh!

      Hi Richard and I'm sorry to hear your nightmare story! Really if the crank didn't seize and still spins freely and doesn't sound like a diesel after putting oil back in it then it should be okay right? Hopefully you spent the couple extra bucks for the full synthetic as that stuff is so slick it probably will of survived (I hope!) One of the benefits of a 2-stoke motor is the transmission is completely isolated from the crank. My oil fill cap literally requires a set of pliers to get it to loosen but after hearing your story I guess that's a good thing!
      I have a similar story from way back a yester-year when I lost my Hi-output stator about 10 miles in and in total darkness alone and not so much as a tick-tac to live on. My minds eye conjured up the thought of a roaming gang of Black Mamba snakes that were sizing me up for the take down. I found a nearby river and literally stood on an exposed rock for 7 hours until sunrise and walked myself back to my truck. I drove 2 hours to a buddies house and convinced him to lend me his full electrical system off his quad and made the trek back. I camouflaged my quad so well I had a hard time finding it again!
      Thanks for the comment - Best of luck getting your machine back on the trails - lesson learned and just keep telling yourself it could always be worse!

      @@350iroc9 it was a used quad when I got it, I put in a new piston, 25 good rides, I got that thing hot, I'm hesitant to put new parts on that high hrs crank. The chassis is al fresh though, so maybe if I find an o.k. running unit or lower end. I'll ressurect it. I was lucky, it was a cloudy drizzle day, nobody up there, on nice days there's OHV riders & 4x4 s around. Could have turned out way worse. If I was injured I would have just made a fire, stayed put . I wear full MX gear every ride , I expect to spill , & intend to get up after ! Ha ha . Still got my suzook DR to finish the riding season so all's not lost, eh
      I was staggering back to truck, tired, dehydrated, hungry, shouting " bears, cougars, yeti , I'm ready , turn ya into alphaghetti!" - I figured that I was better off to be a noisy thing than a silent thing travelling in the dark, & I'll get what i get , I was in MX boots, I considered taking them off, they hurt after a while,that would have been a bad move . Left quad 7:30 pm, got to truck 12:30. Went to get quad & helmet the next day . A valuable lesson about riding alone & not near others, I got complacent & almost got bit by it ...

      Trails that suck are definitely off the menu. The parts on these things are expensive and to just tear everything up would be a sin. Sounds like you need a Bobcat and an Argo 6x6 to start the project. LOL..Thanks for watching!

    I have rode 2 stroke bikes and quads for over half of my life and I suggest that this dude needs to drop a gear and Rev that motor a shit ton more than what he's doing in this video. I would be slipping and sliding all over these trails with those 2 stroke power reeds begging for a break. If you are operating a 2 stroke motorbike and you are cruising, you need to shift down 1 or 2 gears and get in that powerband and let the suspension do its best to accommodate your wild ride. I hate seeing a 2 stroke rider that isn't always in the powerband. I would get in that 1st gear powerband around corners and shift to 2nd without a doubt in my mind and wheelie drift the next corner because that is what these 2 strokes was made for and not pussy footing around on trails.

      Mr. abc123, can I ask your current age? The reason I ask is because you sound like you're possibly still in the 30-40 timeframe? Am I accurate on this assumption?
      One of the points of this video is to show that a well tuned 2-stroke can be driven in a mild manner. I do understand that many of the rigs of the past were only rideable when on the pipe and anything else was unusable.
      I guess the only thing I can leave you with is that my quad or any other for that matter would have never lasted 28 years and counting riding the way you're recommending. This machine can be extremely violent and if not respected could change the course of life. At this point of being over 50 I'm just thankful to still be riding a sport quad and not a couch on wheels 4x4 or UTV.
      Additionally you may of heard me say that these are two way trails inside this park. Over the years I've come across fellas riding the way your recommending and in a handful of those times witnessed some people that never went home. Sadly the people who lost their lives were not always the guy riding irresponsibly and one of them was a little kid of only 10. I've been doing this long enough and know better than to be "slipping and sliding" into blind corners or short sighted sections of path. Again I can only assume your still in your younger years or your riding environment was not comparable to this ones.
      I don't want to come across as a Dad and can understand where you're coming from in your comment but those days are over for me. The good news is that we would all love to see your video riding like you stole it! I like you am very entertained with top end 2 stroke action!
      Thanks for watching Mr. abc123 and thank you for the comment.
